பொங்கியெழும் ஜனத்திரள் சமுத்திரத்தின் நடுவே, மனிதத் தலைகளைத் தாண்டி பிரம்மாண்டமான கலைப்பொருளாக அசைந்தாடி வரும் தேரைக் கண்டு ரசிக்கும் கண்கள் பாக்கியம் செய்தவை. கலாச்சாரம், பக்தி ஆகியவற்றுடன் பிரமிப்பூட்டும் கலைநுட்பங்களைக் கொண்டவை கோயில் தேர்கள்.

நண்பர் ஒருவர் சொன்னார்: ‘‘இப்போ இருக்கிற குழந்தைகள்லாம் அதிசயமா எதையுமே பார்க்க மாட்டேங்குறாங்க, கேட்க மாட்டேங்குறாங்க” என்று. அவர் சொன்னதில் உண்மை இல்லாமல் இல்லை. எல்லாமே கணினியில், தொலைக்காட்சியில் இன்றைய குழந்தைகளின் விழிகளின் முன் விரிந்துவிடுகின்றன. ஆனால், இன்று 40 வயதுக்கு மேற்பட்டவர்கள் முன்பு அண்ணாந்து பார்த்து ரசித்த பொருட்களில் பலவற்றைக் காலம் தன் சுருக்குப் பையில் போட்டு எங்கோ தூர வீசியெறிந்துவிட்டது.

தஞ்சாவூர் ஜில்லாவில் முடிகொண்டான் என்கிற சிற்றூர் அது. ஒரு காலைவேளை. நாங்கள் பள்ளியில் இருந்தோம். நாங்கள் என்பது – அப்பாகுண்டு, மணிவண்ணன், நட்டு, என்னையும் சேர்த்த நால்வர் அணி. ஒருவர் சட்டையை ஒருவர் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு ரயில் வண்டியாய் காலம் எங்களை நகர்த்திய நாட்கள் அவை.

உடைந்த பாதி பிளேடை வாயில் வைத்து மோர்சிங் வாசித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த நட்டுவின் காதில் அப்பாகுண்டு ஏதோ கிசுகிசுக்க, அது மெல்ல நகர்ந்து எங்கள் காதுக்கு வந்தபோது எங்களால் வகுப்பில் உட்காரவே முடியவில்லை.

‘‘டேய்! நம்ம ரோட்டுக்கு கப்பி கார் வந்திருக் காம்…” என்பதுதான் அந்த ரகசிய சேதி.

சரியாக ஒரு மணிக்கு பள்ளியில் ஒரு மூலையில் தொங்கும் தண்டவாளத் துண்டில் மணியடிக்கப்பட, நாங்கள் மு.ரா.சன்ஸ் மஞ்சப் பையை (அதுதான் அப்போது எங்களின் ‘ஸ்கூல் பேக்’) தோளில் சாய்த்துக்கொண்டு சாலையை நோக்கி ஓடினோம். அய்யனார் சிலை உயரத்துக்குச் சாலையை அடைத்துக்கொண்டு கப்பி கார் நின்றது.

முன்னும் பின்னும் ராட்சஸ இரும்பு ரோலர்களைக் கால்களாகக் கொண்டு பிரம் மாண்டமாக அது நின்றது. அதன் மேலே ஓர் ஆள் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார். அவர்தான் கப்பி காரின் பாகன். ஊரே அதை அதிசயமாகப் பார்த்தது. நாங்கள் அதைத் தொட்டுத் தொட்டுப் பார்த்தோம். யானையைத் தொட்ட சந்தோஷம்.

ரோடு ரோலரை எங்கள் ஊர்க்காரர்கள் கப்பி கார் என்றார்கள். ரோடு முழுக்க நிரவப்படும் கருங்கல் ஜல்லிகளுக்குக் கப்பிக் கல் என்று பெயர். கப்பிக் கல்லைத் தன் இரும்புப் பாதங்களால் நசுக்கி நகரும் ரோடு ரோலருக்கு கப்பி கார் என்கிற பெயர் எவ்வளவு பொருத்தம்!

கப்பி கார் வந்த நாளில் ஊருக்கே ஒரு திருவிழா முகம் வந்துவிட்டது. ஊரே சாலையில் திரண்டது. நாங்கள் பள்ளிக்கூடத்தை மறந்தோம்.

‘‘டேய்! இது பத்து நாளைக்கு முன்னால திருவாரூர்ல கிளம்புச்சாம். இன்னிக்குத்தான் நம்மூருக்கு வந்திருக்கு” என்று கப்பி காரின் இயந்திரவியலைப் புட்டுப்புட்டு வைத்தான் மணிவண்ணன்.

“அப்படின்னா, இது டெல்லிக்குப் போக எத்தனை மாசம் ஆகும்” என்று நான் விரல் விடாமல் எண்ணிப் பார்த்தேன்.

‘‘எனக்கு கப்பி கார் ஓட்டுற வேலை கெடச்சா போக மாட்டேம்பா. எல்லா காரும் இத முந்திக்கிட்டுப் போயிடும். இது டொடக்கு டொடக்குனு நவுரும்” என்றான் அப்பாகுண்டு.

எங்கள் ரோட்டில் கப்பிக் கல்லை நிரப்பி தார் போட்டு முடிக்கப் பத்து நாட்கள் ஆயின. அங்குலம்அங்குலமாக நகர்ந்து சாலையைச் சமன்படுத்திக் கம்பீரமாக நின்றது கப்பி கார். ஊர்க்காரர்களின் பொழுதுபோக்கே அதை வேடிக்கை பார்ப்பதுதான். அது நின்ற இடத்தில் தற்காலிகமாகப் பட்சணக் கடையும், கடலைக் கடையும் முளைத்திருந்தன. யானையின் முதுகில் சுண்டெலிகள் துள்ளிக் குதிப்பதைப் போல மாலைவேளைகளில் அமைதியாக நிற்கும் கப்பி காரின் மேலே ஏறி நாங்கள் விளையாடுவோம்.

‘‘கப்பி காருக்கு நான்தான் டைவர்” என்றான் நட்டு.

‘‘நான்தான் கண்டக்டரு” என்றேன் நான்.

நாங்கள் கப்பி காருக்கு பக்கத்தில் நிற் பதையே பெருமையாக நினைத்து நின்று கொண்டிருந்தபோது எங்கள் பள்ளிக்கூடத்தில் மூணு வருஷமா எட்டாங்கிளாஸிலேயே இருக்கும் சுப்பிரமணி அங்கு வந்தான். மேலும் கீழும் அதைப் பார்த்தவன், அதன் பின்னால் சென்று தம்கட்டித் தள்ளினான். அதுவா நகரும்? என்ன நினைத்தானோ, கப்பி காரின் ரோதையை ஓங்கி உதைத்துவிட்டு, ‘‘இதுக்குத் திருட்டுப் பயலே வர மாட்டான்டா…” என்று சொல்லிவிட்டுப் போனான்.

தூரத்தில் கப்பி காரின் ஓட்டுநர் வருவதைப் பார்த்து நாங்கள் மிரண்டுபோனோம். அருகில் வந்த அவர், ‘‘பயல்களா… வர்றீங்களாடா… ஒரு ட்ரிப் அடிக்கலாம்” என்று அழைத்தார். அவருடன் தொற்றிக்கொண்டோம். எங்களைச் சுமந்தபடி மெல்ல நகர்ந்தது அந்தப் பேரதிசயம். சில நூறு சென்டிமீட்டர் தூரம் போன பிறகு எங்களைக் கப்பி காரிலிருந்து இறக்கிவிட்டார் பாகன்.

அதன் பிறகான காலங்களில் நான் பல நூறு மைல் தூரங்களைக் கடந்துவிட்டேன். என் நினைவின் சாலையில் அந்தக் கப்பி கார் இப்போதும் எங்கள் ஊரைவிட்டுத் தாண்டவே இல்லை!

” Can You Please Make Sure, My Daddy Gets one More Day Off…” ? A Little Girl”s Request to Google !!!

It isn’t even close to Christmas but Google just pulled a Santa. This interaction between a little girl requesting time off for daddy and Google will restore your faith in internet.

Little Katie wrote a letter to Google to get her father, who works as a designer at Google, an extra day off. Stating in her letter that he only gets a Saturday off every week Katie went on to explain how it was her father’s birthday and also summer time.

Here’s what the letter says:

Dear Google Workers,
Can you please make sure when daddy gets to work, he gets one day off. Like he can get a day off on Wednesday. Because daddy ONLY gets a day off on Saturday.
From Katie.
PS. It is daddy’s BIRTHDAY!
PPS. It is summer, you know

Isn’t this enough to just melt anyone’s heart? This is what happened next.

Amazing Things You Never Knew about Ice Cream.

When I think about summer, one of the first things that come to my mind is the way our family used to eat ice cream on the weekends. Something about this delicious dessert always makes us feel better, and it’s a well known “cure” for a hard day. It was really surprising for me to find out just how many things about this simple delight are attributed to luck and chance. I’m sure you too will be amazed to find out all of these incredible facts about ice cream:
The idea for chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream came from an anonymous suggestion on a board in a Burlington shop of Ben & Jerry’s. The flavor went into production in 1991 and became a huge success.

The sundae was invented by soda shops in the late 1890s and there is much debate about the true origin and meaning of the name. It might come from a belief that a special treat such as sundae is usually eaten on special day, such as Sunday. Another possible origin is the German word Sünde, meaning sin, alluding to the calorie rich nature of a sundae.

When you see pictures of ice cream on advertisements or on display cabinets it’s most likely mashed potatoes. Food photographers often use this as a stand-in for actual ice cream since it looks the same, but is much easier to shape.

The first known ice cream recipe was found in the recipe book of Lady Anne Fanshawe. It is dated at 1665 and shows it was flavored with orange flower water, mace and other bizarre additions.

The first versions of Neapolitan ice cream were made of green pistachio, white vanilla, and red cherry ice cream, the same colors as the Italian flag. Today the flavors have changed to vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, because those are the three most popular flavors in the market.

A “brain freeze”, or a “ice cream headache” happens when the nerve endings on the roof of your mouth touch anything too cold. When that happens they send a message to your brain signaling a loss of body heat. The blood vessels in your brain contract in response to that and when they return to their normal size, the blood rushes back to your head. Knowing this won’t make your head hurt any less, but at least now you know why it hurts…

Some the most popular ice cream flavors of the colonial era in the United States were oyster, parmesan, and asparagus. Luckily they have been replaced by vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.

Chocolate ice cream is much older than vanilla, the first documented recipe for it appeared in the book The Modern Steward, published in Italy during 1692. Not only was vanilla much later invented, but it was also much less popular since vanilla was very expansive.

Professional ice cream taste-testers (yes It’s a real job) use special gold spoons to test each new dish. Gold dishes leave virtually no trace of flavor which allow the tester to taste the product with no trace from what was last on the spoon.

Ever wondered why Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavors are so full of chunky mix-ins and extra everything? Well it turns out that co-founder Ben Cohen has no sense of scent. He therefore gets a lot of his pleasure in ice cream from its texture. After some early tasting sessions Ben & Jerry’s decided this wasn’t a bad idea at all, and we should all be thankful about that!

This is the biggest ice cream dish in the UK, it takes two hours to make and it includes 99 scoops of ice cream. This sugar monster weighs around 9lb (4kg) and contains more than 21,000 calories.

The waffle cone was created by simple chance when Abe Doumar, a traveling salesman, was working at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. He saw that an ice cream vendor ran out of paper dishes and encouraged him to start serving on rolled waffles made by another nearby vendor.

The most important ingredients in ice cream are milk, sugar and… Air. Without air mixed in, ice cream would be as hard as a rock and not much different then flavored ice.

The Frrrozen Haute Chocolate ice cream sundae is the most expansive dessert in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. It’s made using a blend of 28 cocoas, including 14 of the world’s most expensive, 5g (0.17 oz) of edible 23-karat gold, and a gold spoon decorated with white and chocolate-colored diamonds, which you can take home with you. The price for all of this goodness? 25,000$ US.

The Army of Terracotta Cave!

Most people would be shocked and disgusted to see a head suddenly poppin out of the earth of their private garden and giving them a stare, but in the case of one Chinese farmer, this was the beginning of a huge discovery for all of humanity.

The cave of the terracotta soldiers – which was designated a UNESCO world heritage site – is a subterranean cave containing no less than 7,000 clay , life-sized statues of soldiers, meant to serve the first emperor of China in the afterlife.

The cave of the terracotta soldiers, located about half an hour’s drive from the city of Xi’an, was discovered completely by accident as a local famer was digging into his land with the goal of building a well, found, to his amazement, a life-sized head made of terracotta (a type of clay) buried in it. It took him 10 years to report his finding, which began a frenzy of digging in the area that took 70,000 workers 36 years to complete. During that time, thousands of clay soldiers were discovered, completing a complete, hand-made army.

After studying the cave and clay soldiers for many years, researchers found that the cave was created by Ching shaw huang di, the first emperor of Xi’an, as a bid for immortality.

The emperor, who started his reign in 246 BC when he was but 13 years old, developed the kingdom and set a unified language and writing style. Some, however, maintain that he was a hated tyrant.

After many assasination attempts, the emperor developed a fear of death and wanted to ensure that even after his death, he’d have enough soldiers to protect him from his enemies. This will led the emperor to spend 11 years building an entire underground city, within stand thousands of clay statues of soldiers and servants who await his command.

The cave is spread over an area of 16,300 square meters and split into three main areas. It contains over 7000 statues of warriors, with each of the statues having a defined role.

You’ll find bowmen, commanders, cavalrymen and your average foot soldiers, with each the appropriate garments and weapons. In addition to the soldiers, the emperor enriched his post-death world with dancers, singers, acrobats and many others that will amuse and serve him after death.

If that’s not enough to impress you, how about the fact that each and every one of the statues has a unique face, with no 2 alike in the whole army. Each has a different face, expression, hair style and other items that separate them from the others.

Mamaivamsho Jeeva Loke Jeeva Bhoota Sanatanaha.” Being the sparks of Divine, you must have the sacred qualities of Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Love and Nonviolence. Instead of behaving in accordance with these noble virtues, people submit themselves to evil qualities like lust, greed, anger, jealousy, hatred and avarice which does not befit a human being. These changes are due to one’s food habits and behavior. The food you take and the water you drink must be pure, and timely. Lead a well regulated human life and realise the Divine within you.

The Dead Sea, also known as the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordering Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. It’s a hypersaline lake that is truly one of Earth’s unique places. Not only is it the saltiest body of water in the world, but it is also the lowest place on the entire globe, and one of the only bodies of water you can freely float in!

Here are 10 amazing facts about this unique place, ……

1. The surface and shores of the Dead Sea are 423 metres (1,388 ft) below sea level, making it Earth’s lowest elevation on land.

2. The Dead Sea is 377 m (1,237 ft) deep, making it the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. A hypersaline lake is a landlocked body of water that contains significant concentrations of sodium chloride or other mineral salts, with saline levels surpassing that of ocean water.

3. With 33.7% salinity, the Dead Sea is one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water. Although Lake Assal (Djibouti), Garabogazköl and some hypersaline lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (such as Don Juan Pond) have reported higher salinities.

4. The Dead Sea’s unusually high salt concentration means that people can easily float in the Dead Sea due to natural buoyancy. In this respect the Dead Sea is similar to the Great Salt Lake in Utah in the United States.

5. The Dead Sea is roughly 8.6 times saltier than the ocean. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals cannot flourish (hence its name). The high salinity prevents macroscopic aquatic organisms such as fish and aquatic plants from living in it, though minuscule quantities of bacteria and microbial fungi are present.

6. The Dead Sea is 67 kilometres (42 mi) long and 18 kilometres (11 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley and its main tributary is the Jordan River.

7. The Dead Sea area has become a major center for health research and treatment for several reasons. The mineral content of the water, the very low content of pollens and other allergens in the atmosphere, the reduced ultraviolet component of solar radiation, and the higher atmospheric pressure at this great depth each have specific health effects.

8. Biblically, the Dead Sea was a place of refuge for King David. It was one of the world’s first health resorts (for Herod the Great), and it has been the supplier of a wide variety of products, from balms for Egyptian mummification to potash for fertilizers.

9. An unusual feature of the Dead Sea is its discharge of asphalt. From deep seeps, the Dead Sea constantly spits up small pebbles and blocks of the black substance. Asphalt coated figurines and bitumen coated Neolithic skulls from archaeological sites have been found. Egyptian mummification processes used asphalt imported from the Dead Sea region.

10. The world’s lowest road, Highway 90, runs along the Israeli and West Bank shores of the Dead Sea at 393 m (1,289 ft) below sea level.
