94-year-old Joe Gonsalves has been appointed Chief Traffic Warden for Mangaluru

October 1 is observed as World Elders Day – but for some, age is clearly just a number – and no reason to take the foot off the accelerator and apply the brakes. Meet Joe Gonsalves, a spry 94-year-old – and he plans to get the traffic of Mangaluru into some kind of order. He has volunteered to work with the traffic police in his home town to set up a Traffic Warden Squad.

“I have been driving for the last 75 years in Mangalore city. It was a pleasure to drive. I realised there is a radical difference in traffic from what I knew then and what it is today. Very often people tend to criticize what the traffic department is doing. But have we asked a question to ourselves, what are we doing about it? Pointing a finger at anyone is very easy but we should not be on fault-finding missions but on fact-finding missions. Then we will find an answer,” Mr Gonsalves told NDTV.

Mr Gonsalves has been appointed Chief Traffic Warden for the city after choosing to be the change he wanted to see.

AC Vinay, a corporator, is impressed. “This is an indication to youth and other citizens of Mangalore city to join with Gonsalves,” he said

“I am not working alone. I am working with the department coordinating their efforts at the same time providing them with manpower to the best of my ability. We directed our attention to colleges… We told students their role was not just to study and get degrees but to reach out to people. We told them the best way is to try and avoid road accidents and deaths. It is my turn to return something to Mangalore and the people of Mangalore,” Mr Gonzalves said.

The members of the new Traffic Warden Squad will have a marvelous example to follow. As will all of us.

” சுவாமிக்கு பயன்படாவிட்டால் என்ன… எனக்கு பயன்படுமே ….!!!”

தன்னை உள்ளார்ந்த பக்தியோடு தரிசிக்க வரும் பக்தர்கள் மீது, காஞ்சி பெரியவர் மிகுந்த கருணை கொள்வார். உதாரணத்துக்கு இரண்டு சம்பவங்கள்…!

ஒருநாள் பிரதோஷம்… சென்னையில் இருந்து ஒரு பக்தர் கூடைகள் நிறைய விதவிதமான பூக்களுடன் காஞ்சிபுரம் வந்து சேர்ந்தார். அங்குள்ள சந்திர மவுலீஸ்வரருக்கு பெரியவர் பிரதோஷ வேளையில் பூஜை செய்வார். அந்த பூஜைக்கு இந்தப் பூக்கள் பயன்படும் என்பது பக்தரின் ஆசை. ஆனால், மடத்திற்கு வந்ததும் அந்தப் பூக்களை பூஜைக்கு பயன்படுத்த முடியாது என சொல்லி விட்டார்கள். காரணம், பூக்களை நூல் கொண்டு கட்டியிருந்தது தான். நார் கொண்டு கட்டிய பூக்களை மட்டுமே சுவாமி பூஜைக்கு பயன்படுத்துவார்கள்.

அந்த பக்தர் மிகுந்த வருத்தமடைந்தார். இவ்வளவு சிரமப்பட்டு கொண்டு வந்தும், பூக்கள் பூஜைக்கு பயன்படாமல் போயிற்றே என்று…!

பூஜை முடிந்து பெரியவர் வெளியே வந்தார். பூக்கூடைகளைப் பார்த்தார். விஷயத்தை தெரிந்து கொண்டார்.

“எவ்வளவோ ஆசையாய் இந்த பூக்களை கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறார். சுவாமிக்கு பயன்படாவிட்டால் என்ன! எனக்கு பயன்படுமே!” என்றவர் அமர்ந்தார்.

பெரியவருக்கு மாலைகள் அணிவிக்கப்பட்டன. பக்தருக்கு சந்தோஷம் தாங்கவில்லை. கிட்டத்தட்ட புஷ்பாங்கி சாத்தியது போல பெரியவர் ஜொலித்தார். கூடியிருந்த எல்லா பக்தர்கள் முகத்திலும் ஆனந்த வெள்ளம்..

இப்படி ஒரு காட்சியைப் பார்க்க கொடுத்து வைக்க வேண்டுமே!

ஒருவர் மகாபெரியவரை “இவர் திருப்பதி வெங்கடாஜலபதி’ என்றார். இன்னொருவர் “திருச்செந்தூர் முருகன்’ போல் காட்சி தருகிறார் என்றார். மற்றொருவர் இல்லை.இல்லை… இவர் தான் “காஞ்சி காமாட்சி’ என்றார். இன்னொருவர் “தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி’ என்றார். ஒவ்வொருவர் பார்வையிலும், அவரவர் இஷ்ட தெய்வமாய் தெரிந்தார் பெரியவர்.

இன்னொரு இனிய சம்பவம்.

மீரட்டில் இருந்து ஒரு ராணுவ அதிகாரி பெரியவரை தரிசிக்க வந்தார். சென்னையில் இருந்து காஞ்சிபுரம் வந்து சேர்வதற்குள், பெரியவர் பக்தர்களுக்கு காட்சியளித்து விட்டு ஓய்வெடுக்க சென்று விட்ட தகவல் கிடைத்தது. அன்றே மீரட் திரும்ப அவர் டிக்கெட் புக் செய்திருந்ததால், ரயிலின் நேரம் கருதி பெரியவரை தரிசிக்காமலேயே சென்னை வந்து ரயில் ஏறி விட்டார். ரயில் போபாலை அடைந்து விட்டது.

ஒரு இடத்தில் கலவரம் என்பதால் அதற்கு மேல் ரயில் போகாது எனவும், சென்னை திரும்பப் போவதாகவும் அறிவித்து விட்டனர்.

அதிகாரி அந்த ரயிலிலேயே சென்னை வந்து விட்டார். காஞ்சிபுரம் சென்றார். பெரியவரின் தரிசனம் கிடைத்தது. மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் மீரட் திரும்பினார்.

எந்தச் சூழலிலும் பெரியவர் தன் பக்தர்களை கைவிட்டதே இல்லை. இன்றும் வாழும் தெய்வமாய் அனைவருக்கும் ஆசியளித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

இருக்கும் வரை இருமிவிட்டு, இறந்தபின்னே இடுகாட்டுக் கரையான்களுக்கு இரையாகி மறையும் மனிதர்களுக்கு மத்தியில், வரலாறாகவே வாழ்ந்து விட்டுப் போகிற மனிதர்கள்
உன்னதமானவர்களாய் உலகத்தாரால் மதிக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். அவர்களின் விழிகள் வழிகாட்டும் மொழிகளாய் மற்றவர்களுக்கு அனுதினமும் அறிவுரைகளைத் தந்துகொண்டே இருக்கின்றன. சங்கடங்கள் சாமரம் வீசினாலும் அவர்கள் எதற்கும் அஞ்சுவதில்லை.
காந்தியும், காமராஜரும் சிரமத்தின் மீதேறி சிகரத்தை அடைந்த மகத்தான வாழ்ந்துகாட்டிகள். எளிமையான, பயன்மிகுந்த வாழ்க்கையால் மற்றவர்களுக்கு முன்மாதிரியாகத் திகழ்ந்தவர்கள்.உலகப் போர்களால் உருக்குலைந்துபோன உலகிற்கு அகிம்சை என்கிற அமுதத்தை அள்ளித்தந்த வள்ளல் மோகன்தாஸ் கரம்சந்த் காந்திஜியும், காந்திய நெறியில் வாழ்ந்து, காந்தியாகவே வாழ்ந்து காந்தி ஜெயந்தி அன்றே கண்ணயர்ந்த கர்மவீரர் காமராஜரும் இன்றைய இளையோரின் இணையற்ற வழிகாட்டிகள்.

மனித ஆத்மாக்களுக்கு மத்தியிலே மகாத்மாவாக மாற அவர் என்ன செய்தார்? கர்மமே கண் என்று லட்சக்கணக்கான குழந்தைகளின் கல்விக்கண் திறந்த கர்மவீரர் காமராஜர் இன்றும் துாயஆட்சியாளராய் நினைத்துப் பார்க்கப்படுகிறாரென்றால் காரணம் என்ன?

கைதவறி கீழே விழுந்த பாதரசம் எப்படி எந்த அழுக்கோடும் ஒட்டாமல் உருண்டோடுமோ, அதுபோல் இந்த இரு தலைவர்களும் உலகியல் வாழ்க்கையோடு ஒட்டிஒட்டாமல் வாழ்ந்தவர்கள். மனத்துக்கண் மாசுஇல்லாமல் வாழ்தலையே அனைத்து அறமாகக் கொண்டு வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்ந்தவர்கள். இருவரும் அனுபவங்களால், வாழ்வை ஆராதனை செய்தவர்கள். இந்திய நாட்டின் விடுத்தலைக்காகப் பல நாட்கள் சிறையிலேயே கழித்தவர்கள் இருவரும்.
எளிமையான தலைவர்கள் விளம்பரத்திற்கு ஆசைப்படாத எளிமையான தலைவர்களாக இருவரும் திகழ்ந்தார்கள். 1901ல் ஒரு மாநாட்டிற்காக காந்தி, கல்கத்தா வந்திருந்தார். மாலையில் மாநாடு தொடங்க இருந்த இடத்தைக் காலையில் பார்வையிடச் சென்றார்.
அந்த மைதானம் குப்பையும் கூளமுமாயிருந்தது. ஒன்றும் பேசாமல் காந்திஜி துடைப்பத்தைக் கையில் ஏந்தி மைதானத்தைத் துாய்மைசெய்யத்தொடங்கினார்.
தஞ்சை மாவட்டச் சுற்றுப்
பயணம் மேற்கொண்ட காமராஜர் ஒரு பழைய கோவிலுக்குள் சென்றார், உடன் இருந்தவர்களிடம் “ இதை யார் கட்டுனான்னு கேட்டேன்” என்றார். யாருக்கும் தெரியவில்லை, சட்டென்று மேலே எரிந்துகொண்டிருந்த குழல்விளக்கைக் காட்டி, ஆயிரம் வருஷத்துக்கு முன்னாடி இந்தக்கோயிலே கட்டுன மவராசன் யாருன்னு தெரியல… அதுல டியூப் லைட் போட்ட மவராசன் பேரு பெயிண்டுல எழுதியிருக்குன்னேன்” என்று சிரித்தபடிச் சொல்லியவாறே காமராஜர் வெளியே வந்துவிட்டார்.
பதவியை விரும்பா பண்பாளர்கள் இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் அடைந்தபோது, எந்த ஆட்சிப் பொறுப்பையும் ஏற்க மறுத்தார் காந்தி. இரண்டு முறை பிரதமர் ஆகும் வாய்ப்பு வந்தபோதும் ஏற்காமல் சாஸ்திரியையும், இந்திராகாந்தியையும் பிரதமராக்கி அழகுபார்த்த தலைவர் காமராஜர். “பதவியைத் தேடி நாம் போனால் பதவிக்குப் பெருமை, பதவி நம்மைத் தேடிவந்தால் நமக்குப்பெருமை” என்று அடிக்கடிக் கூறியவர் கர்மவீரர் காமராஜர்.
பாரிஸ்டர் பட்டம் பெற்ற காந்தி கறுப்பர் என்ற காரணத்தால் டர்பன் நீதிமன்றத்தில் தலைப்பாகையோடு வாதாட அனுமதி மறுக்கப்பட்டது. அதைக் கடுமையாக எதிர்த்து, அந்த நீதிமன்றத்தை விட்டுவெளியேறினார். முதல் வகுப்புப் பயணச் சீட்டோடு பிரிட்டோரியாவுக்குப் பயணித்தவரை நிறவெறியோடு வெள்ளையர்கள் துாக்கி எறிந்தபோது பட்ட ரணத்தை இந்தியநாட்டின் சுதந்திரத்திற்காகப் பயன்படுத்தினார். ராட்டையையே சாட்டையாக்கி அந்நியரை நாட்டைவிட்டு ஓடச்செய்த மகாத்மா, மதுரையில் தன் ஆடைகளை மாற்றித் தமிழ்நாட்டு விவசாயிகள் உடுத்தும் மிக எளிய உடைக்கு மாறினார். மகாத்மாவின் கொள்கைகளில் கவரப்பட்டு காமராஜர் வாழ்நாள் முழுக்க கதராடையையே உடுத்தினார்.
மனிதநேயச் செல்வர்கள் “வாடிய பயிரைக் கண்டபோதெல்லாம் வாடினேன்” என்ற வள்ளலாரின் மனிதநேயநெறியை இருவரும் தம் வாழ்வின் அறமாகக் கொண்டவர்கள். பள்ளிக்குச் செல்லும் வயதில் ஆடுமாடுகளை மேய்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்த சிறுவன், காமராஜரைப் பெரிதும் பாதித்ததன் விளைவாக, உலகம் போற்றும் மதியஉணவுத் திட்டத்தைத் தொடங்கிவைத்தார்.
சம்பரானில் கஸ்துாரிபாவோடு பயணித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது அழுக்கு உடையோடு குழந்தைகள் பிச்சை எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருப்பதை காந்திஜி பார்க்கிறார். “கஸ்துாரிபா… இவர்கள் அழுக்கோடு மாற்று உடை இல்லாமல் இருப்பது உனக்கு உறுத்தவில்லையா?
நீ ஏன் இவர்களை நீராடவைத்து துாய்மையான உடையணிவித்து பாடம் சொல்லிக் கொடுக்கக் கூடாது?” என்று கேட்டார். காந்திஜி சொன்னபடி வாழ்க்கை முழுக்க கஸ்துாரிபா செய்தார்.
சத்தியசோதனை மேற்கொண்டவர்கள் மகாத்மாவுக்கு முகஸ்துதி பிடிக்காது. “நாம் சேவை செய்யத்தானே பிறந்திருக்கிறோம் இதில் பெருமைப்பட என்ன இருக்கிறது?” என்று அடிக்கடி சபர்மதி ஆஸ்ரமத்திற்கு வருவோரிடம் கூறுவார்.
காமராஜரும் அப்படியே வாழ்ந்தார். யாரேனும் தன்னைப் பாராட்டிப் பேசினால், “நிறுத்துனேன்… என்னைப் புகழ்ந்து பேசும் நேரத்திலே நல்ல காரியம் எதையாவது செய்யலாமேனேன்” என்பார். முதலமைச்சரானதும் பாதுகாப்புக்கு தன் காருக்கு முன் சைரன் வைத்த கார் சென்றதை விரும்பாதவர்.
இருவரும் சிறுவயதில் தந்தையை இழந்து தாயாரின் அன்பில் வளர்ந்தவர்கள். இருவரும் சுதந்திரப் போரில் ஈடுபட்டு சிறை சென்றவர்கள். அந்நிய ஆடைகளை மறுத்து காலம் முழுக்க கதராடை அணிந்தவர்கள். எளிமையானவர்கள், பழகுவதற்கு இனிமையானவர்கள், நேர்மையானவர்கள். தாழ்வுற்று, வறுமை மிஞ்சி, விடுதலை தவறிக்கெட்டு, தன் அன்னை தேசம் பாழ்பட்டுவிடக் கூடாது என்பதற்காகத் தங்களையே சுதந்திர வேள்வியில் உருக்கி ஊற்றியவர்கள். அவர்கள் வழியை நம் விழிகள் நோக்கட்டும். இந்த தேசத்தை நேசித்த அவர்கள் வழியில் நம் இளையோர் பயணம் நடக்கட்டும்.

This is dharma built on the bedrock of understanding, this is life built on the bedrock of dharma.

How 2 Sikh Men Used Their Turbans to Save a Group of Ganesha Devotees from Drowning ….

A group of young men lost balance in a canal while immersing Ganesha idols. Two Sikh men instantly opened their turbans and threw them towards the drowning people to save their lives. This is how they did it.

Inderpal Singh and Kamalpreet Singh, two Sikh men from Sangrur in Punjab, set aside their religious code, and saved the life of a group of drowning people with the help of their turbans.

On Friday, a group of young men, aged between 18-25 years, had gone for the immersion of Ganesha idols in a canal in Sular Gharat village, located in Sunam Tehsil of Sangrur District. They were at the ghaat when a sudden gush of water made them lose their balance and they slipped into the canal.

34-year-old Inderpal Singh was there along with 25-year-old Kamalpreet Singh, amidst the crowd that had gathered at the bank to take part in the immersion ceremony. When Inderpal noticed that some devotees were drowning, he took a life-saving decision in a matter for few second. Taking off his nine meter long turban, he hurled it towards them so they could take support and come back to the bank.

“First, five youths slipped into the canal while immersing the idols. They had fallen very near to the canal bridge and shouted for help. I immediately spotted a wire lying near the bridge and rescued two of them with the help of the wire. However, three others were still caught in a current,” said Inderpal, according to a PTI report.

After this, three other people jumped in to rescue those who were still struggling in the water. But all of them got stuck in the intense whirlpool. It was then that Inderpal threw in his turban, and pulled the three men out. Kamalpreet also followed him, and directed his turban towards remaining three people, pulling them out.

9 ways to embarrass yourself in Singapore…….

Singapore is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and is an island nation packed with expats. It’s a country that seems to have perfectly blended cosmopolitan living with rich cultural heritage.

But, as with anywhere in the world, there are local customs people must be aware of and rookie mistakes visitors can make. These mistakes can not only be highly embarrassing but also costly.

Singapore has strict fines that ensure society functions the way authorities want it to. For example, if you “illegally” cross the road — within 50 metres of a crossing zone — you will be fined up to S$1,000 (£472, $US744) or get 3 months in jail.

Here are some official and unofficial faux pas you don’t want to make when you go to Singapore.

9. Taking a picture on the Metro

Singapore’s Metro, which is the equivalent of Britain’s DLR service and an overground version of New York’s subway, bans pretty much everything other than entering and travelling.

Taking pictures and eating or drinking is banned and carries a S$500 (£267, $US372) fine.

8. Breaking the hawker stall seating code

If you get to a food court that has lots of hawker stalls, beware of breaking the unofficial seating rule of “vacant” seats.

If you see an empty seat with a pack of tissues next to it, do not pick it up and sit down — this is how people save their seats while they go and get food.

Think of it as the equivalent of putting your towel on a sun lounger.

7. Wearing very little

Singapore is very near the equator and temperatures can rise to as high as 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 Fahrenheit) but you’ll look utterly ridiculous walking around like you’re going to the beach.

Singapore is a cosmopolitan city/country and 90% of region is heavy on the air conditioning — so you’ll also be freezing if you’re not actually covered up.

6. Not flushing the toilet

Well, it goes without saying that you should flush the toilet after you use it.

But if you forget or can’t, for whatever reason, you could be seriously embarrassed when an official calls you out. And they will do that — not flushing the toilet in Singapore in a public place carries a S$150 (£71, $US112) fine.

5. Not carrying tissues and hand wipes

A lot of Asia now has western toilets but in some of the more “local” areas the “drop and squat” is still prevalent.

These toilets are effectively holes in the ground that you have to squat over and many have hoses instead of toilet paper. While Singapore has mostly moved to using Western toilets, there will be some times when you’re stuck using these “alternative” ones.

It’s always good to be prepared with tissues and anti-bacterial gel for these occasions.

4. Chewing gum

Singapore is incredibly sleek, clean, and cosmopolitan but this is mainly down to the strict rules it has governing its environment.

The sale and importation of chewing gum is banned in Singapore — it carries a huge S$100,000 (£49,000, $US74,517) fine.

3. Playing with chopsticks

Ask any local what really irks them when it comes to dining etiquette and playing with chopsticks will come near the top.

It’s seen as disrespectful and embarrassing to fellow diners.

2. Spitting

Spitting on the street may happen a lot in mainland China but don’t think you can do the same in Singapore.

Not only will you be openly berated by locals but you’ll be fined S$500 (£267, $US372).

1. Insulting or making fun of the food

One of the great things about travelling is tasting and experiencing new cuisines. But whether it’s trying chicken feet for the first time or the infamously pungent durian fruit, don’t outwardly complain if you encounter food in Singapore that you think is odd.

Insulting the food and making fun of local delicacies will just show you up as an embarrassing, disrespectful tourist.

Only the Atma (Self) is eternal and immortal. ‘I’, ‘Self’, ‘God’ are all different names by which the Atmaswarupa is called. God incarnated as Rama, Krishna, and the like, and underwent several difficulties to demonstrate great ideals. Finally, they too left the mortal coil. The physical bodies of the Avatars undergo changes, but the Divine Atma in their bodies remains the same. It is omnipresent, eternal and changeless. Divinity in all the human beings is one and the same.

Three young boys from Coimbatore have just won an international grant for their project, No Food Waste, which focuses on collecting excess food from events and parties and then distributing among the needy. Here’s more.

In India, over 214 million citizens struggle with hunger, in spite of huge quantities of food being thrown away at various events like weddings and parties.

While many of us still wonder about what can be the solution for this problem, three young boys in Coimbatore have come up with an interesting idea to address the issue.

Meet Padmanaban Gopalan and his two friends, Sudhakar and Dinesh, who started an initiative called No Food Waste. They collect excess food from events like weddings and parties and then distribute it among the hungry in Coimbatore.

“One day a gaunt elderly lady, emaciated to the bones in a torn saree, approached me for alms, just as I left a wedding reception hall where food was carelessly discarded on used plates simply because the guests could not finish. I couldn’t stand by and watch anymore. I had to do something about it,” says Padmanabhan.

Padmanabhan and his friends runs a volunteer-staffed hotline for wedding, banquet, and school organizers, who wish to donate their excess food to the needy.

This effort by the trio has now also received support from a US Based NGO, Pollination Project, who have selected No Food Waste as the best initiative among many others nominated from across the world. The team got a $1000 grant from the NGO to work further on the project. Check out their Facebook page for more details.

The winning organization was finalised based on public voting, out of the 150 applicants that the NGO received.

The voting closed on July 17 and No Food Waste won by a margin of 4,000 votes. Generally, winners are chosen after scrutinising the project, but because it was the 1,000th grant, the NGO authorities planned to launch a public voting system.

Prior to this, the team used to spend money out of their own pockets to package the food and deliver it. They tried to contact many sponsors, but no one took them seriously.

To date, the team has donated about 5,100 excess meals to families and individuals. Padmanabhan now wants to expand this initiative to five nearby cities, with an aim of feeding over 5,000 people every month.

Padmanabhan is also planning to launch a mobile application that will enable people to locate areas where extra food can be donated. To spread the word about the initiative, he also visits schools to conduct No Food Waste audits and spread awareness about the cause. He has already helped over 60 local schools in reducing their food waste.

Kudos to the trio for addressing a big issue in such an amazing way, and congratulations for a much deserved victory.
