Underground Houses of COOBER PEDY… AUSTRALIA !!!!

 

 

Coober Pedy is a town located in northern South Australia and is known as the opal capital of the world, as nearly 95 percent of the world’s opal supply comes from the local mines. This small town with a population of around 3000 has a unique way of life – nearly half of them live underground.

Back in 1916 when people moved into Coober Pedy to mine opal, the harsh summer temperature drove them into caves dug into the hillsides. When temperatures outside raged over 40 degree centigrade, underground temperatures remained comfortable and nearly constant year-round. Even today, the town folk prefer to build their homes in underground caves. In fact, many of these homes are abandoned mine shafts dug to search opal.

Coober Pedy has around 250,000 mine shafts and signs like this are common.

Building a new home in Coober Pedy is much cheaper and quicker compared to conventional building methods. The modern homes aren’t the deep caves that people imagine but are dug into the hill sides. The entrance is usually at street level, and the rooms extend towards the back into the hill.

There is a local golf course – mostly played at night with glowing balls, to avoid daytime temperatures. It’s completely free of grass and golfers take a small piece of “turf” around to use for teeing off. The lack of grass hasn’t discouraged them to put up this sign in the golf course though.

International Space Station sends a laser message from space

On June 5, astronauts aboard ISS used a beam of laser light to send an HD video to researchers waiting below.

 

Anyone who remembers dialup internet can sympathize with the plight of NASA mission controllers. Waiting for images to arrive from deep space, slowly downloading line by line, can be a little like the World Wide Web of the 1990s. Patience is required.

A laser on the International Space Station (ISS) could change all that. On June 5, 2014, the ISS passed over the Table Mountain Observatory in Wrightwood, California, and beamed an HD video to researchers waiting below. Unlike normal data transmissions, which are encoded in radio waves, this one came to Earth on a beam of light. Matt Abrahamson, who manages the Optical Payload for Lasercomm Science at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said:

It was incredible to see this magnificent beam of light arriving from our tiny payload on the space station.

Better known as OPALS, the experimental laser device was launched to the space station onboard a Space-X Dragon spacecraft in the spring of 2014. Its goal is to explore the possibility of high-bandwidth space communications using light instead of radio waves. If successful, researchers say OPALS would be like an upgrade from dial-up to DSL, achieving data rates 10 to 1,000 times higher than current space communications.

So far so good.

The entire transmission on June 5 lasted 148 seconds and achieved a maximum data rate of 50 megabits per second. It took OPALS 3.5 seconds to transmit a single copy of the video message, which would have taken more than 10 minutes using traditional downlink methods. The message was sent multiple times during the transmission. Abrahamson said:

The video is an homage to the first output of any standard computer program: ‘Hello, World.’

Because the space station whips around Earth at 17,500 mph, laser-tagging a telescope on the fast-moving ground below can be tricky. To accomplish the precision tag-up, a laser at the ground station illuminated the station. OPALS responded by sending its own 2.5 watt encoded laser signal right back in the same direction, carrying the HD video. During the 148-second transmission, OPALS maintained pointing to the ground station within 0.01 degrees while tracking at speeds up to 1 degree per second. Abrahamson commented:

NASA missions collect an enormous amount of data out in space. Laser communications is a faster alternative for getting those data to the ground.

With this demonstration, we’re paving the way for the future of communications to and from space.

Mind is present inside the body amidst the five sheaths (Pancha Koshas). The five sheaths are gross body sheath (Annamaya Kosha), Pranamaya Kosha (pertaining to the life force), Manomaya Kosha (mind sheath), Vijnanamaya Kosha (intellect sheath), and Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss sheath). Above the mind sheath is Prana (life force) and below it is discrimination power. Both of these are related to Fire. Mind is related to Water. The Moon is the presiding deity for the Mind. Hence coolness is its nature. Because of the presence of life force above and discrimination power below, the Mind melts and gets transformed into water. Water’s nature is to flow towards a lower level. It does not have the nature of flowing upwards. Hence the mind always wanders around the sensory and worldly pleasures. It cannot voyage towards the pure and higher stages. To divert the mind towards higher realms, spirituality is of utmost necessity.

நண்பர் ஒருவர் சொன்னார்: ‘‘இப்போ இருக்கிற குழந்தைகள்லாம் அதிசயமா எதையுமே பார்க்க மாட்டேங்குறாங்க, கேட்க மாட்டேங்குறாங்க” என்று. அவர் சொன்னதில் உண்மை இல்லாமல் இல்லை. எல்லாமே கணினியில், தொலைக்காட்சியில் இன்றைய குழந்தைகளின் விழிகளின் முன் விரிந்துவிடுகின்றன. ஆனால், இன்று 40 வயதுக்கு மேற்பட்டவர்கள் முன்பு அண்ணாந்து பார்த்து ரசித்த பொருட்களில் பலவற்றைக் காலம் தன் சுருக்குப் பையில் போட்டு எங்கோ தூர வீசியெறிந்துவிட்டது.

தஞ்சாவூர் ஜில்லாவில் முடிகொண்டான் என்கிற சிற்றூர் அது. ஒரு காலைவேளை. நாங்கள் பள்ளியில் இருந்தோம். நாங்கள் என்பது – அப்பாகுண்டு, மணிவண்ணன், நட்டு, என்னையும் சேர்த்த நால்வர் அணி. ஒருவர் சட்டையை ஒருவர் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு ரயில் வண்டியாய் காலம் எங்களை நகர்த்திய நாட்கள் அவை.

உடைந்த பாதி பிளேடை வாயில் வைத்து மோர்சிங் வாசித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த நட்டுவின் காதில் அப்பாகுண்டு ஏதோ கிசுகிசுக்க, அது மெல்ல நகர்ந்து எங்கள் காதுக்கு வந்தபோது எங்களால் வகுப்பில் உட்காரவே முடியவில்லை.

‘‘டேய்! நம்ம ரோட்டுக்கு கப்பி கார் வந்திருக் காம்…” என்பதுதான் அந்த ரகசிய சேதி.

சரியாக ஒரு மணிக்கு பள்ளியில் ஒரு மூலையில் தொங்கும் தண்டவாளத் துண்டில் மணியடிக்கப்பட, நாங்கள் மு.ரா.சன்ஸ் மஞ்சப் பையை (அதுதான் அப்போது எங்களின் ‘ஸ்கூல் பேக்’) தோளில் சாய்த்துக்கொண்டு சாலையை நோக்கி ஓடினோம். அய்யனார் சிலை உயரத்துக்குச் சாலையை அடைத்துக்கொண்டு கப்பி கார் நின்றது.

முன்னும் பின்னும் ராட்சஸ இரும்பு ரோலர்களைக் கால்களாகக் கொண்டு பிரம் மாண்டமாக அது நின்றது. அதன் மேலே ஓர் ஆள் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார். அவர்தான் கப்பி காரின் பாகன். ஊரே அதை அதிசயமாகப் பார்த்தது. நாங்கள் அதைத் தொட்டுத் தொட்டுப் பார்த்தோம். யானையைத் தொட்ட சந்தோஷம்.

ரோடு ரோலரை எங்கள் ஊர்க்காரர்கள் கப்பி கார் என்றார்கள். ரோடு முழுக்க நிரவப்படும் கருங்கல் ஜல்லிகளுக்குக் கப்பிக் கல் என்று பெயர். கப்பிக் கல்லைத் தன் இரும்புப் பாதங்களால் நசுக்கி நகரும் ரோடு ரோலருக்கு கப்பி கார் என்கிற பெயர் எவ்வளவு பொருத்தம்!

கப்பி கார் வந்த நாளில் ஊருக்கே ஒரு திருவிழா முகம் வந்துவிட்டது. ஊரே சாலையில் திரண்டது. நாங்கள் பள்ளிக்கூடத்தை மறந்தோம்.

‘‘டேய்! இது பத்து நாளைக்கு முன்னால திருவாரூர்ல கிளம்புச்சாம். இன்னிக்குத்தான் நம்மூருக்கு வந்திருக்கு” என்று கப்பி காரின் இயந்திரவியலைப் புட்டுப்புட்டு வைத்தான் மணிவண்ணன்.

“அப்படின்னா, இது டெல்லிக்குப் போக எத்தனை மாசம் ஆகும்” என்று நான் விரல் விடாமல் எண்ணிப் பார்த்தேன்.

‘‘எனக்கு கப்பி கார் ஓட்டுற வேலை கெடச்சா போக மாட்டேம்பா. எல்லா காரும் இத முந்திக்கிட்டுப் போயிடும். இது டொடக்கு டொடக்குனு நவுரும்” என்றான் அப்பாகுண்டு.

எங்கள் ரோட்டில் கப்பிக் கல்லை நிரப்பி தார் போட்டு முடிக்கப் பத்து நாட்கள் ஆயின. அங்குலம்அங்குலமாக நகர்ந்து சாலையைச் சமன்படுத்திக் கம்பீரமாக நின்றது கப்பி கார். ஊர்க்காரர்களின் பொழுதுபோக்கே அதை வேடிக்கை பார்ப்பதுதான். அது நின்ற இடத்தில் தற்காலிகமாகப் பட்சணக் கடையும், கடலைக் கடையும் முளைத்திருந்தன. யானையின் முதுகில் சுண்டெலிகள் துள்ளிக் குதிப்பதைப் போல மாலைவேளைகளில் அமைதியாக நிற்கும் கப்பி காரின் மேலே ஏறி நாங்கள் விளையாடுவோம்.

‘‘கப்பி காருக்கு நான்தான் டைவர்” என்றான் நட்டு.

‘‘நான்தான் கண்டக்டரு” என்றேன் நான்.

நாங்கள் கப்பி காருக்கு பக்கத்தில் நிற் பதையே பெருமையாக நினைத்து நின்று கொண்டிருந்தபோது எங்கள் பள்ளிக்கூடத்தில் மூணு வருஷமா எட்டாங்கிளாஸிலேயே இருக்கும் சுப்பிரமணி அங்கு வந்தான். மேலும் கீழும் அதைப் பார்த்தவன், அதன் பின்னால் சென்று தம்கட்டித் தள்ளினான். அதுவா நகரும்? என்ன நினைத்தானோ, கப்பி காரின் ரோதையை ஓங்கி உதைத்துவிட்டு, ‘‘இதுக்குத் திருட்டுப் பயலே வர மாட்டான்டா…” என்று சொல்லிவிட்டுப் போனான்.

தூரத்தில் கப்பி காரின் ஓட்டுநர் வருவதைப் பார்த்து நாங்கள் மிரண்டுபோனோம். அருகில் வந்த அவர், ‘‘பயல்களா… வர்றீங்களாடா… ஒரு ட்ரிப் அடிக்கலாம்” என்று அழைத்தார். அவருடன் தொற்றிக்கொண்டோம். எங்களைச் சுமந்தபடி மெல்ல நகர்ந்தது அந்தப் பேரதிசயம். சில நூறு சென்டிமீட்டர் தூரம் போன பிறகு எங்களைக் கப்பி காரிலிருந்து இறக்கிவிட்டார் பாகன்.

அதன் பிறகான காலங்களில் நான் பல நூறு மைல் தூரங்களைக் கடந்துவிட்டேன். என் நினைவின் சாலையில் அந்தக் கப்பி கார் இப்போதும் எங்கள் ஊரைவிட்டுத் தாண்டவே இல்லை!

Retirement can be a wonderful thing. It sure is a huge change in one’s life, moving from office to home, from keeping hours to keeping yourself busy and having fun. Indeed, retirement has many secrets, which is why it was important for me to ask some ‘hard’ questions about this phase of life.

Question: How many days in a week?
Answer: 6 Saturdays, 1 Sunday

Question: When is a retiree’s bedtime?
Answer: Two hours after he falls asleep on the couch.

Question: How many retirees to change a light bulb?
Answer: Only one, but it might take all day.

” Can You Please Make Sure, My Daddy Gets one More Day Off…” ? A Little Girl”s Request to Google !!!

It isn’t even close to Christmas but Google just pulled a Santa. This interaction between a little girl requesting time off for daddy and Google will restore your faith in internet.

Little Katie wrote a letter to Google to get her father, who works as a designer at Google, an extra day off. Stating in her letter that he only gets a Saturday off every week Katie went on to  explain how it was her father’s birthday and also summer time.

Dear Google Workers,
Can you please make sure when daddy gets to work, he gets one day off. Like he can get a day off on Wednesday. Because daddy ONLY gets a day off on Saturday.
