Chennai-born Raja Rajeswari has been sworn-in as a criminal court judge in New York by Mayor Bill de Blasio, becoming the first India-born woman to be appointed a judge in New York City.
Newly appointed city judge, Chennai-born Raja Rajeswari, rises to take her place for a Judicial Swearing-In Ceremony at New York City Hall in New York on Monday.
Ms. Rajeswari, 43, who had migrated to the U.S. from Chennai as a teenager, previously worked with the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office for her entire career in several bureaus including Criminal Court, Narcotics, Supreme Court, and the Sex Crimes Special Victims Bureau, where she last served as Deputy Chief.
Ms. Rajeswari took the oath of office at a ceremony in New York City on Monday along with 27 other judges appointed earlier this month to the Family Court, Criminal Court, and Civil Court, which are part of the New York State Unified Court System.
The mayor appoints judges to 10-year terms in the New York City Criminal Court and the Family Court within the city.
“To ensure New Yorkers have access to a fair, equitable justice system, we need judges who are qualified, honest and reflective of the people of this city,” Mr. de Blasio said.
“With their wealth of legal experience, these appointees represent all five boroughs and all walks of life. From the first female South Asian-American judge in New York City to a former NYPD First Deputy Commissioner, these talented leaders truly reflect the diverse range of communities that make up our great city,” he said.
The mayor said Ms. Rajeswari has an “extraordinary, extraordinary empathy for others”.
He lauded her ability to speak in Indian, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian languages, saying she put her history as an immigrant and ability to speak all these languages to work, “helping to reach immigrants” in the Staten Island communities where she served as an Assistant District Attorney.
“And she saw as her mission to give them confidence in the justice process,” Mr. de Blasio said.
Ms. Rajeswari came to the U.S. when she was 16.
“It’s like a dream. It’s way beyond what I imagined,” she had told silive.com, a Staten Island news website.
“For someone like me, an immigrant who comes from India, I’m beyond grateful,” she had said. “I told the mayor this is not only my American Dream, but it shows another girl from a far away country that this is possible.”
Ms. Rajeswari hoped to use her new position to improve the judicial system by encouraging interpreters to have more access to aid immigrants, the news site had said.
Ms. Rajeswari had told Desi Talk newspaper that she had observed gender inequality even before coming to the US when some of her “brilliant” girlfriends in India were married off at the age of 14 and 15. “That has always stayed with me.”
As a prosecuting attorney in New York, she has come across numerous cases of spousal and child abuse with in the South Asian community in New York, Ms Rajeswari had said. “Many of the domestic violence victims have been South Asians, Sri Lankans.”
Ms. Rajeswari has served in the district attorney’s office for the past 16 years and has been the deputy chief of the Special Victims Unit for more than four years.
She has worked on cases involving women and children and said they are the ones that touched her the most.
Ms. Rajeswari said that she hopes to use her new position to improve the judicial system by encouraging interpreters to have more access to aid immigrants.
“I’m honoured to sit on a city bench and make Staten Island proud,” she said.
Currently, there are two male judges of Indian descent in civil court settings — Jaya Madhavan on the New York City Housing Court in Bronx County, and Anil C. Singh of New York County Supreme Court, 1st District, according to ethnic New India Times.
Besides her legal acumen Ms Rajeswari is an accomplished Bharat Natyam and Kucchipudi dancer who continues to perform at Indian events and temples with her troupe from the Padmalaya Dance Academy, named after her mother, Padma Ramanathan.

If the world is real, it must be cognized even during the stage of dreamless deep sleep, but we are not conscious of the world during sleep. Hence, the visible world is as unreal as the dream world. The Universe is a reflection of the Divine (Brahman). The sky might be reflected in a pot of toddy but that does not defile it. Similarly, in this vehicle called body, the Atma dwells pure and undefiled. The fruits of action, good or bad, adhere to the vehicle and not to the indweller. When such wisdom dawns, the dark shadows of the three types of Karma flee before it (The three being Sanchita – the entire accumulated Karma; Prarabdha – the Karma whose effects we undergo in the present andAagami – the Karma we perform now whose results will be felt in the future). The suffering and travails of this world are illusory and transitory. Fix your mind firmly on this great fact and set out bravely on the path of spiritual practice, the practice of devotion.
Scholars say, it is impossible to escape karma. What they say is true to a certain extent. Now, you may wonder if there is a way to escape from the consequences of karma. Yes, it is possible for everyone, if they ‘earn’ the grace of God. Once you deserve and receive God’s grace, you will not be affected by karmaphala (consequences ofKarma). Hence, strive to earn divine grace. When you earn Divine grace, even if you have to experience the consequences of karma,you will not feel the pain. Consider the example of a bottle with medicine. The medicine will have an expiry date. After the expiry date, the medicine will lose its potency. Likewise, God’s grace will make the karmaphala ‘expire’, and nullify the effects of karma. The most important aspect here is to ‘deserve’ His Grace. You must cultivate necessary strength and willpower to deserve divine grace, and be free from the shackles of karma.

At 16, Hamsa Padmanabhan had a minor planet 21575 named ‘Hamsa’, after her. She was then a second-year B.Sc student of Fergusson College, when she made a presentation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Lincoln lab for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fir (ISEF) in 2006. When Anish Mukherjee and Debarghya Sarkar were only 16 years old, they noticed the large scale bottle tampering rampant in India. They took the idea of autodisposable syringes—which, once used, cannot be used again—and implemented that for one-time use bottle cap. Their design enabled customers to know if the the bottle had been tampered with. For this, planet 2000 AH52 he was renamed 25629 Mukherjee.
In 2010, Sarkar and his school classmate Anish Mukherjee worked on an innovative design that would make bottle-caps completely tamper proof. For his contribution to electrical and mechanical engineering, 25630 Sarkar (previously 2000 AT53) is named after him. Debarghya Sarkar is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Southern California. He plans to take his interest in bottle cap design towards a larger goal – design, fabrication and integration of devices that modulate photons and electrons.
When class X student Hetal Vaishnav saw that ragpickers were not picking up waste packets made up of multilayer plastic, she found that recycling companies avoided buying multilayer film plastic waste from them as it cannot be reused or recycled. Hetal then spent months to innovate upon a process to deliver an innovative material that is “sustainable to water, has good nail- and screw-holding capacity, and has features that are better than MDF (Medium-density fibreboard) and plywood.”. This let her use multilayered and metallised plastic used for packaging wafers and chewing tobacco. “I got a certificate from Lincoln Lab a few days ago,” Hetal said on telephone from Rajkot. Planet 25636 Vaishnav was named for her contribution to the environment.
After Akshat found how annoying it was to index documents in a computer, he developed a system to automatically categorise documents, and also find relations between them, using artificial intelligence. The planet named after him, 12599 Singhal, is in the same region of planets that has 8749 Beatles, 2001 Einstein and 7000 Curie.
Madhav Pathak has changed the conventional Braille slate, making writing easier for the visually impaired. After Madhav Pathak found that his uncle could not easily write in Braille, the system of six raised dots, he decided to change it. Braille has a steep learning curve: Blind children have to memorise more than 300 combinations of dots, since they need one set of combinations for reading, and another set for writing! Madhav has modified the Braille slate (used for writing the language), which lets students easily read and write the language. For this, he has 12509 Pathak named after him.
Named Vishyanand, the main belt minor planet is between the orbits of planets Mars and Jupiter. The planet was discovered in 1988 by Kenzo Suzuki in Toyota, Japan and was nameless until now. A minor planet is usually named after the person who discovered it but if it remains nameless, then it’s in the hands of the committee members to name it. Hence Micahel Rudenko, a minor planet committee member and an ardent fan of Viswanathan Anand’s knack for chess decided to name the planet ‘Vishyanand’. He is only the third chess player in the world after Alexander Alekhine and Anatoly Karpov to be honored in this fashion.

எழுதியவர் போல் தெரியாது. எலும்பும் தோலுமாய் இருப்பார். சிறு வயதில் பிடித்த காச நோயின் வடு இறுதிவரை இருந்தது. பேசிக்கொண்டே இருப்பார். திடீரென்று மெளனத்திற்குப் போய் விடுவார். அப்படி இருந்ததால் தான் அவர் எழுத்தும் உணர்ச்சிப்பூர்வமாக இருக்கும். ஆரியாம்பாள் இறப்பின் போது சங்கரர் பட்ட துயரத்தை இவர் வர்ணித்ததை அறிஞர் அண்ணா ரொம்பப் பாராட்டினாராம். அவர் தாயாரும் அந்தச் சமயத்தில் மறைந்ததால் அவர் மன நிலையும் அப்படி இருந்ததாகச் சொன்னாராம்.

பெரியவர் கட்டளைப் படிதான் ஆதி சங்கரர் வரலாற்றையும் கணபதி எழுதினார். இவருடைய “ஜய ஜய சங்கர’ தொடர் கல்கியில் 1962ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்தது. 10 ஆண்டுகள் கல்கியில் பணிபுரிந்தார். mail நாளேட்டில் கொஞ்சம் காலம். 25 ஆண்டுகள் எந்தப் பத்திரிகையையும் சாராமல் எழுதினார். புட்டபர்த்தியில் தங்கலாம் என்று சென்ற போது ஸ்ரீ சாய் பாபா “”உன் வேலை இங்கே இல்லை. தெய்வத்தின் குரல் எழுது. அதுவே உன் பிறவிப் பணி” என்றாராம்.
பல புத்தகங்கள் எழுதியிருந்தாலும், சத்ய சாய்பாபா பற்றி, ஸ்ரீ ராம கிருஷ்ணர் – ஸ்வாமி விவேகானந்தர், ஸ்ரீ சாரதா தேவி பற்றி, மீரா பாய், பகவான் ரமணர் பற்றி என்று பல மஹான்களைப் பற்றி அவர் எழுதியிருந்தாலும் காஞ்சி ஸ்ரீ மஹா பெரியவர் உபன்யாசங்களையும், சம்பாஷணைகளையும் தொகுத்து அவர் ஏழு புத்தகங்களாக வானதி பதிப்பகம் மூலம் கொண்டு வந்த “தெய்வத்தின் குரல்’ தான் அவர் எழுத்துக்களுக்கு மகுடம் போல் திகழ்கிறது. “தெய்வத்தின் குரல்’தொகுப்பிற்காக ரா.க. ரொம்பவே சிரமப்பட வேண்டியிருந்தது. காரணம் பெரியவர் ஒரு விஷயத்தை ஓர் இடத்தில் ஆரம்பிப்பார். வேறு இடத்தில் முடிப்பார். ஒவ்வொரு விஷயத்தையும் அலசும்போது முன்னர் விட்டுப் போன விளக்கங்களை வேறு இடத்தில் சொல்வார். கணபதி அனைத்தையும் செவிமடுத்துக் கேட்டு சந்தேகம் இருந்தால் வேறு புத்தகங்களையோ நபர்களையோ பார்த்துத் தெரிந்து கொண்டு அப்படியும் குழப்பம் இருந்தால் பெரியவரிடமே கேட்டு குறிப்பு எடுத்துக் கொள்வார். அதுவும் பெரியவரின் சம்பாஷணைப் பாணியிலேயே இவரும் குறிப்பு எடுத்து எழுதினார். அந்த நூல் “ஸ்ர்ண்ஸ்ரீங் ர்ச் ஞ்ர்க்’ என்று ஆங்கிலத்திலும் மற்ற மொழிகளிலும் (ஹிந்தியில் மூன்று தொகுப்புகள் வந்துள்ளன) மொழி பெயர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. முன்னாள் குடியரசுத் தலைவர் ஆர்.வெங்கடராமன் போன்றவர்கள் அந்த நூலை “ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி உபநிடதம்’ என்று புகழ்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள்.
மஹா பெரியவர் மிகச் சில சமயங்களில் ஆன்மீகம் தவிர இதர விஷயங்களைப் பேசியதும் உண்டு. அந்த நேரங்களில் ஹாஸ்ய நொடிகளும் உண்டு. அதிலும் பலப் பல விஷயங்கள் வெளி வரும் என்பார் கணபதி. அவரே பெரியவரை சமயம் வாய்த்தபோது ஒருமுறை “”ஏன் உங்களை பெரியவான்னு கூப்பிடறா” என்று கேட்டாராம். அவர் நமுட்டுச் சிரிப்புடன் “”பெரிய வாய். ஓயாம பேசறேன் இல்லயா, அதனாலோ என்னவோ” என்றாராம். “”இல்லை. மஹா வாக்கியங்களை உபதேசம் பண்ற வாய்”என்றார் இவர்.
“”சரி அப்ப ஏன் பெரியவாள்னு சொல்றா” என்று பீடாதிபதி கேட்டதற்கு “”எங்க காம க்ரோதத்தை நீங்க வாளால் அறுத்து எரியறதாலே” என்று சட்டென்று கணபதி சொன்னாராம். தான் சார்ந்துள்ள “காமகோடி’ என்கிற பீடத்திற்கான பெயர்ப் பொருத்தத்தைப் பெரியவர் ஒருமுறை சொன்னாராம். “”காமகோடின்னா தர்மார்த்த காமகோடின்னுஅர்த்தம். காமத்தின் கோடியிலே என்ன இருக்கும்? மோஷம்”என்றாராம்.
ரா.கணபதியின் “மைத்ரீம் பஜத’ புத்தகத்திலிருந்து மஹா பெரியவர் சம்பந்தமான ஒரு சம்பவம்: சென்னை சம்ஸ்கிருதக் கல்லூரியில் ஸ்ரீ மஹா பெரியவர் முகாமிட்டிருந்த சமயம். ஒரு சின்ன பெண் ஸ்ரீ ராம ஜயம் எழுதிய நோட்டு கொடுத்து வெள்ளிக் காசு பெரியவரிடம் கேட்டது. அப்போது ஒரு லட்சம் நாமம் எழுதினால் தங்கக் காசும் 12,500 எழுதினால் வெள்ளிக் காசும் பெரியவர் தந்த சமயம். வெள்ளிக் காசு கேட்டவுடன் மலர்ந்த முகத்துடன் நோட்டை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு காசு கொடுத்து அனுப்பினார். சற்று நேரத்திலேயே கண்ணைக் கசக்கிக் கொண்டு அவள் திரும்ப இவரிடம் வந்து நின்றாள். “”காசு எங்கேயோ தொலைந்து போய்விட்டது” என்று அழுதாள்.
“”நீ எவ்வளவு எழுதினாய்” என்று பெரியவர் கேட்டார்.
“”8,500 நாமம் எழுதினேன்”.
“”பின்னே ஏன் 12,500 எழுதினது போல் வெள்ளிக் காசு கேட்டாய்?”
“”பொய் சொன்னேன்”.
“”அது தப்பு இல்லயா, அப்படிச் செய்யலாமா?”
என்று அவளைக் கேட்டவர் அங்கிருந்த பக்தர்களைக் கேட்டார்.
“”இந்தச் சிறுமி பாவம் அறியாமல் 12,500 ராம நாமாக்களுக்குப் பதில் 8,500 நாமா எழுதியுள்ளது. இன்னொரு 4,000 நாமா குறைகிறது. நீங்க எழுதி சரி செய்ய முடியுமா”?
அங்கேயே கூட்டத்தில் இருந்த அனைவருக்கும் தாளும் எழுது கோலும் வழங்கப்பட்டன. 4000 பூர்த்தியானதும் அந்தச் சிறுமியிடம் அவர் சொன்னார்:
“”நீ 8500 தான் எழுதினதா நிஜத்தைச் சொன்னதால இவங்களை வெச்சு மீதியை எழுதிட்டேன். கணக்கு சரியாப் போயிடுத்து. வெள்ளிக் காசு தரலாம்னாலும் நீ உண்மையைச் சொன்னதுக்கு உனக்கு தங்கக் காசே தரேன்” என்று தங்கம் எடுத்துக் கொடுத்தார்.
என்ன அற்புதமான பேரம் பாருங்கள். சிறுமி செய்த தவறுக்குப் பரிகாரமாக 4000 நாமம் எழுதும் புண்ணியம் பக்தர்களுக்கு. தவறை ஒப்புக் கொண்டதால் சிறுமிக்கு வெள்ளிக்குப் பதில் தங்கக் காசு கருணா சாகரம் என்று இதனால் தான் அவருக்குப் பெயரோ?
“கருணைக் கடலில் சில அலைகள்’ என்ற அவர் புத்தகத்திலிருந்து இன்னொரு சம்பவம்: ஓர் இளைஞன் “”தான் படித்து இரண்டரை வருஷம் ஆகியும் வேலை கிடைக்கலை,
ஏழ்மையான குடும்பம், சகோதரி வேறு கல்யாணத்திற்கு நிற்கிறாள், எல்லோரும் அவனை “தண்டச் சோறு’ என்று திட்டுகிறார்கள்” என்று சொல்லி அவரிடம் அழுதான்.
அவனைக் காத்திருக்கச் சொல்லிவிட்டு தன் முக்கிய பணிகளை அவர் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்த வேளையில் ஒரு வாரியத்தின் மேற்பார்வைப் பொறியாளராக இருந்த ஓர் அதிகாரி தரிசனத்திற்கு வந்தார். அவரிடம்
மஹா பெரியவர் தன் துறவுக் கோலைச்சுட்டிக் காட்டி “”இந்த தண்டத்துக்கு ஒரு வேலை போட்டுத் தருவீங்களா” என்று கேட்க அவர் அதிர்கிறார். “”ரெண்டரை வருஷம் ஆச்சாம். வேலை கிடைக்கலையாம். படிச்ச பையன். ஏழ்மையான குடும்பம். ஒரு வேலை கிடைக்குமா? எல்லாரும் அவனை தண்டம்னு திட்டறாங்களாம்”.
“”உத்தரவு பெரியவா”.
அந்த இளைஞனைக் கூப்பிட்டு அந்த சந்தோஷ செய்தியைச் சொல்லியபடி தன் துறவுக் கோலை சுவரில் சார்த்துகிறார். “”உம். ஒரு தண்டத்துக்கு வேலை கிடைச்சாச்சு.
இன்னொரு தண்டம் பார்த்துக் கொடுத்திருக்கு. தண்டம் தான் எங்களுக்கு ரக்ûக்ஷ. ப்ரஹ்மசாரிகளுக்கும் தண்டம் ரக்ûக்ஷ. ராஜ தண்டத்துக்கு அடங்கித் தான் நீதி, நியாயம்.
இந்த லோகத்திலே எதுவும் தண்டமில்லை” என்று திருவாய் மலர்ந்தருளினார் பெரியவர்.
ரா.கணபதியின் ஏழாவது “தெய்வத்தின் குரல்’ தொகுப்பை மஹா பெரியவர் பார்க்கவில்லை. அது வெளி வந்த ஆண்டு 2000. அதற்குப் பிறகு இரண்டு தொகுப்புகளுக்கு கணபதியிடம் விஷயம் இருந்ததாம். “ஆனால் என் புத்தியில் இருந்து எழுத வெச்ச பேய் மலை ஏறிடுத்து. என்னாலே இனி எழுத முடியாது” என்று நிறுத்திக் கொண்டுவிட்டார். “”அது என்னவோ வந்து ஆட்டம் காட்டிட்டுப் போயிட்டா பெரியவா” என்று மஹாசுவாமிகளின் வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றி முத்தாய்ப்பாய் சொல்கிறார் ரா.க.
ஆட்டம் போட்டது பெரியவர் மட்டுமா? ரா.கணபதியும் தான்.

People yield to delusion and become one with the darkness caused by false values and attachment to the unreal, the ‘me’ and ‘mine’. But the scripture (Shastra) is like a mother; she does not give up. She persists and pursues; she reminds you of your goal so that you will be saved. The scriptures are to be considered as the cause of the awareness of the incomprehensible, immeasurable and inexpressible Brahman. The scriptures are numberless, and a lifetime is too short. Aspirants are plenty; doubts and hesitations are numerous; steadfastness is meager. As a result, no one can claim full mastery. But you need not drink the entire ocean to know its taste; one drop is enough. Similarly, it is impossible to understand all the contents of the scriptures. But it is enough to grasp the important lesson that it teaches and put it into practice. The lesson is: constant remembrance of the Divine.

தினமும் மூன்று வேளை குளத்தில் குளிப்பதும், குருவாயூரப்பனைத் தரிசனம் செய்வதுமாக இருந்தார். அவ்வாறு அவர் குளத்தில் குளிக்கும்போது, தன் சேமிப்பு பணமான, 2,000 ரூபாயை ஒரு துணியில் மூட்டையாக கட்டி, கரையில் வைத்து விட்டுக் குளிப்பார்.
அவர், எட்டு வயது சிறுவனை தன் உதவிக்காக வைத்திருந்தார். அவன், இப்பெரியவரை அழைத்துச் சென்று குளிக்க வைத்து, சாமி தரிசனமும் செய்ய வைப்பான். அதற்காக, அவனுக்குச் சம்பளமும் உண்டு. அப்பையனும், தன் கடமைகளை ஒழுங்காக செய்து வந்தான்.
கடைசி நாளான, 48வது நாள், தன் பண மூட்டையைக் கரையில் வைத்து, சிறுவனைக் காவலுக்கு இருக்கச் செய்து, குளத்தில் மூழ்கினார் பெரியவர். அவர் மனதில் ஏமாற்ற உணர்ச்சி ஏற்பட்டு, ‘என்ன குருவாயூர் இது… ஒரு மண்டலமாக விரதம் இருந்து வழிபாடு செய்றேன்; துளிக்கூட முன்னேற்றம் இல்ல. சரியாக நடக்க கூட முடியலயே…’ என்று வெறுப்போடு மூழ்கி எழுந்தார்.
அதே நேரம், கரையில் பண மூட்டைக்குக் காவலாக இருந்த பையன், பண மூட்டையை தூக்கியபடி ஓடத் துவங்கினான்.
டேய்… திருடன் திருடன்…’ என்று கத்தியவாறு, அவனைத் துரத்தினார் முதியவர்.
பையன் ஓட, பின்னாலேயே முதியவர் ஓட, இருவருமாக மூன்று முறை கோவிலை வலம் வந்தனர். அதன்பின், கோவிலுக்குள் நுழைந்து, கொடிமரத்தைக் கடந்து, கருவறைக்குள் மறைந்த சிறுவன், குருவாயூரப்பனாக தரிசனம் தந்தார்.
திகைத்துப் போன முதியவர், ‘குருவாயூரப்பா… என்ன நியாயம் இது… என் வாத நோயையும் குணமாக்கல; பணத்தையும் கொள்ளையடிச் சுட்டீங்களே..’ என்று கண்ணீர் விட்டார்.
உடனே, குருவாயூரப்பன், ‘பக்தா… உன் நோயை தீர்க்கவில்லை என்றால், நீ, எப்படி இவ்வளவு தூரம் என்னைத் துரத்தி ஓடி வந்திருக்க முடியும்…’ என்றார்.
முதியவருக்கு அப்போது தான் உண்மை புரிந்தது. தன் வாதநோய் குணமாகி, கால்கள் நன்றாக இருப்பதை உணர்ந்தார். ஆனாலும், தன் பண மூட்டை போனது வருத்தத்தை கொடுத்ததால், ‘பகவானே… என் கால்கள் குணமாகி விட்டது; ஆனால், என் பணம் போய் விட்டதே…’ என்றார்.
‘நீ ரோகம் போய், ஆரோக்கியம் வேண்டுமென்று கேட்டாய்; ஆரோக்கியம் கொடுத்தேன். உன்னைப் போலவே, ஓர் ஏழை, தன் மகள் திருமணத்திற்குப் பணம் வேண்டுமென்று, என்னை வேண்டிக் காத்திருந்தான். உன் பணத்தை, அவனிடம் கொடுத்தேன்…’ என்றார் பகவான். உண்மையை உணர்ந்தார் முதியவர்.
இறைவனுக்குத் தெரியும். யாருக்கு, எப்போது, எதைக் கொடுக்க வேண்டுமோ, அப்போது அதைக் கொடுப்பார். அதனால், இறைவனை நினைப்போம்; இன்னல்கள் விலகி, சுகமாக இருப்போம்!

The quake’s epicenter less than 50 miles from capital city of Kathmandu. Hundreds dead and many historic buildings collapsed.
The death toll is still rising from the powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake – an extremely strong earthquake – in Nepal today (April 25, 2015). Hundreds are reported to have died from the quake so far, which wrecked many historic buildings. USGS originally reported the quake at a 7.5-magnitude and later upgraded this estimate. The quake took place at 6:11 UTC (1:11 a.m. CDT). This powerful quake’s tremors were felt across the region, and into neighboring India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The quake struck between the capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara about 120 miles (200 km) away. At least one strong aftershock (6.6 magnitude) has already occurred, with many smaller aftershocks, and more are expected.
Nepali minister reports “massive damage” at the epicenter.
– Preliminary death toll at 686 at 7:30 a.m. CDT (1230 UTC), according to the New York Times.
– Eight bodies recovered from Mount Everest after an avalanche triggered by the quake in Nepal.
– The landmark Dharahara tower is among buildings reduced to rubble in Kathmandu.
