The Incredible Story of Neerja Bhanot – Indian Flight Attendant Who Saved 360 Lives…
On the morning of September 5, 1986, Pan Am Flight 73 landed in Karachi. It had arrived from Mumbai and, had nothing gone wrong, would have departed for Frankfurt and onward to New York City. The flight was carrying, among members of other nationalities, Indians, Germans, Americans, and Pakistanis.
Unfortunately, the flight was hijacked while it was parked on the tarmac at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi.

Four heavily-armed terrorists, dressed as airport security guards, entered the aircraft while firing shots from an automatic weapon and seized control of the plane.
This is the story of Neerja Bhanot, the senior flight attendant on board, who helped a number of passengers escape. She was murdered while shielding three children from terrorist fire, less than 25 hours before her 23rdbirthday.
After the terrorists boarded the plane, Neerja alerted the cockpit crew, who escaped through an overhead hatch in the cockpit. As the senior-most remaining crew member on board, this left Neerja in charge. One of the terrorists asked the flight crew to collect and hand over the passports of all passengers on board. When Neerja realised that the primary targets of the terrorists were American passengers, she hid their passports – even discarding some of them down the rubbish chute. From a total of 41 American passengers, only 2 were killed.
After holding the passengers and crew members hostage for 17 hours on the runway, the terrorists opened fire. Neerja stayed on the plane to help passengers escape, even though she could have been the first to leave. She was shot while shielding three children from the bullets that were being fired by the terrorists.
Most of us will never find ourselves in a high-pressure situation, facing life or death the way Neerja did. True bravery emerges in the face of fear. We might never know what Neerja was thinking or feeling during those terrible hours of the hijacking, but we do know that she chose to respond to the actions of the terrorists with exceptional grace, courage, and grit. Of the 380 passengers and crew members on Flight 73, 20 were killed.
While many others were injured, they did survive – in no small part due to the actions of a 22-year-old flight attendant who chose compassion over cowardice and performed her duty till the very end.

Neerja Bhanot’s family suffered an unbearable loss when they lost their only daughter.
“Neerja was the ‘laado’ of the family, the youngest and most pampered. My parents had wished for her, and in a news article after her death, my father had mentioned how, when she was born on September 7, 1962, the maternity ward matron here at Chandigarh hospital rang up to inform, it’s a girl. To her surprise, he gave her double thanks, for Neerja was a prayer answered after two sons,”recalls Aneesh, her brother.
As her father remembers her,
“Neerja was a very sensitive, deeply affectionate and an extremely decent person who believed in sharing with her people all her joys but not the jolts. She had well defined principles and there was little room for compromise in that area.”
Despite their irreplaceable loss, her parents, Rama and Harish Bhanot, soldiered on, and even found a fitting way to honour Neerja’s memory. With the insurance money that they received after her death and an equal contribution from Pan Am, they set up the Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust. Through the Trust, they present two awards of Rs. 1,50,000 every year – one to an Indian woman who faces social injustice but overcomes it and helps other women in similar situations, and one to honour an airline crew member who acts beyond the call of duty. There could hardly have been a better way to keep Neerja’s memory alive.
For her actions on the day of the hijacking, Neerja Bhanot was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration for the “most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice”, and the Tamgha-e-Insaniyat, awarded by the Pakistan government for showing incredible kindness. She also posthumously received multiple awards for her courage from the United States government.

{ஒவ்வொரு பாசுரமாகப் பாடி, திருமாலை திருப்பாவையால் திருவடித் தொழுது, திருமணம் புரிந்ததும் மார்கழி மாதம்}
{ அதில் ஒன்று தான் கோலம் இடுவதும். }

Message For the Day… ” Good and Noble action is Authentic Worship{Pooja} …”
The inborn desires and mental impressions (samskaras) make or mar the individual (jivi); they are the steps that take all individual souls to the goal. Samskaras make the individual wade through loss and grief. Only through good mental tendencies you can attain the Lord. So every individual has to be wholly engaged in good actions (sath-karmas).Good and noble action is authentic worship (puja). It is the best form of remembering the Lord. It is the highest devotional song. It spreads love, without distinction and difference. It is service done as the duty of the individual. Be engaged in such noble actions (karmas). Revel uninterruptedly in the thought of the Lord. This is the royal road to the goal you have to reach.

Message for the Day….” God is your Protector…”
While struggling in the spiritual field, take on the Lord Himself as your protector. To instill courage in the child, the mother persuades it to walk a few steps and turns about, but she will never allow it to fall. If the child falters and is about to lose balance, she hurries from behind and catches it before it falls. The Lord too has His eyes fixed on the individual (jivi). He has in His hand the string of the kite, which is humanity. Sometimes He may give it a pull or push to loosen the hold; but whatever He does, be confident and carefree, for He is holding that string. This faith will harden into an innate desire (samskara) and will fill you with the essence of love (prema-rasa). The string is the bond of love and grace. You are the kite, bound to the Lord. Earn auspicious merit so the bond of love and grace is firm and grows.

Message for the Day…..” To eat and sleep is the fate of idlers and drones. “
As your day progresses, as one enters the field of daily work and toil, you are infused with the passionate quality (rajoguna). Before you take your lunch, meditate on the Lord again and dedicate the work, and the fruit derived from it to the Lord Himself. Start eating only after this act of devotion and grateful remembrance. This is the meaning of the noon (maadhyannika) worship. By observing this ritual, passion is kept in check and is overpowered by the satwic nature. During the day, people are possessed by a third nature, tamas or dullness. When evening descends, one hurries home, eats one’s fill, and is overpowered by sleep. But a duty still remains. To eat and sleep is the fate of idlers and drones. When the worst of the qualities, tamas threatens to rule, one must make a special effort to escape its coils by resorting to prayer in the company of those who extol the Lord, reading about the glory of God, the cultivation of good virtues, and the purposeful nursing of good rules of conduct. This is the prescribed evening worship (sandhyavandana).

Message for the Day….” When your mind dwells with the Lord always, you will be drawn automatically only toward good deeds”
Twenty hammer strokes might not succeed in breaking a stone, but the twenty first might. Does this mean the first 20 blows were of no avail? No! Each stroke contributed its share to the final success which was the cumulative effect of all 21 strokes. So too, your mind is engaged in a struggle with the internal and external world. Needless to say, you may not always succeed. You can attain everlasting bliss by immersing yourself in good works and saturating your mind with the love of God. Infuse every moment of life with that love. Then evil tendencies will not obstruct you. When your mind dwells with the Lord always, you will be drawn automatically only toward good deeds. The objective of all spiritual practices is to destroy the mind, and some day, one good deed will succeed in destroying it, just like the 21st stroke. Hence no good deed is a waste – every little act counts!

Message for the Day….” What is the First Duty of a Devotee…” ?
To fix your mind on God, activities must be controlled. To successfully control them, you should overcome the handicaps of the gunas – satwa, rajas, and tamas. When these forces of natural impulse predominate and try to direct along their channels, you must pray to God to negate their pull. That is the first duty of a good devotee. The rule of nature is that the morning is the period of pure (satwic) quality, the noon of passionate (rajasic) quality, and the evening hour of dusk of dull (tamasic) quality. At dawn, the mind is calm and clear when awakened from the comfort of sleep liberated from agitations and depressions. In that mental condition, meditation on the Lord is very fruitful. This is the purpose of morning prayers (pratah-sandhya). But, ignoring the significance, people do rituals in a blind mechanical way. From now on perform the dawn worship after realising its inner and deeper meaning.

” Maha Periva Establishes Supremacy of Gayathri …. Gayathri establishes Supremacy of Maha Periva! What a complimentary Divine gesture!! “
I have narrated many of my miracles of Maha Periva through my weekly post through Periva Forum. Some of them are breath taking and many of them are beyond science and perception. I narrate below one such miracle of Maha Periva, which will definitely make you feel, out of the world. The miracle happened on 23 November 2015.
Periva instructed me, to start chanting Gayathri Mantram of 108 per day. Subsequently, Periva instructed me to increase 300 per day. Again, after few days, Periva ordered me to chant 500 per day. Though, I found it difficult to comply the instructions of Maha Periva, I was sure that Periva’s instructions will have some pregnant meaning and definite purpose and hence, I used to follow the instructions, without any second thought. I started chanting 500 Gayathri Mantram per day.
I could understand that Periva was definitely having a specific purpose for his instructions to me, which I realized at the end of this post. Again, Maha Periva instructed me, to chant Gayathri Mantram 1000 per day. I was not worried about this impossible task of chanting 1000 per day. This, I am mentioning because I have to manage the entire house in spite of my ailment of paralytic stoke. Even, recovery from stoke is because of Maha Periva only. The regular readers of my articles know the entire divine clinical process of Maha Periva and how Periva executed his divine treatment in my recovery.
A week gone and Maha Periva very gently and softly gave me the assignment to chant 2000 Gayathri Mantram per day. You all know how I pleaded Periva by expressing my difficulties and how my plea was handled by Periva and made me to chant successfully 2000 Gayathri Mantram per day. My blind perception of chanting so much per day was disproved by Maha Periva by making me to focus my thoughts, concentration, and conviction only on Gayathri chanting.
Yes! I was successful in chanting 2000 per day within my manageable time schedule. I was comfortable, till Maha Periva gave me further instruction to chant 3500/-Gayathri Mantram per day. I never allowed a stone unturned and was towards this Himalayan task of Chanting Gayathri Mantram 3500/- per day starting from 4.30 in the morning. It continues even today.
O.K. but what is the connection between Gayathri Mantram and cancer?
As I was chanting 3500 Gayathri Mantram every day, one day I, could not chant comfortably because on my left cheek there was a boil inside the wall of the cheek which gave me trouble in chanting Gayathri. Immediately, my wife took me to a dentist for treatment. Doctor was of the opinion that sample of the boil should be sent for biopsy test for suspected cancer detection. However doctor with the help of another dental surgeon removed the boil and put multiple stitches to close the wound.
Myself and my wife were shocked and unmoved for some time. We have returned home and maintained absolute silence for some time. With eyes full of tears, I started chanting Gayathri Mantram without interruption, with pain. Night, before retiring for bed, I went to Maha Periva and cried by asking him why these things are happening only to me? I asked further that if you know that I am going to get cancer then
Why did you call me and bless me with an apple and kumkum, when there was such a huge crowd in 1993?
Why did you recover me from my paralytic stoke?
Why did you make me a busy man from the status of “vegetable on the cot?
Why did you bring back and restore all my lost respect and reputation?
Why you should save me from severe paralytic stroke by giving treatment at Uttarakhand by make me paying just a paltry money of Rs.5/- against the assumed bill of Rs.5, 00,000/-.
Why you should make me to feel that I am travelling safely in your laps though I was travelling in an ambulance during midnight at an altitude of 10000 feet plus at Himalayas?
Why did you make me to chant 3500 Gayathri per day in spite of my stoke, which is an impossible task even for a healthy person.
I asked “Maha Periva”, what is the answer for all my above questions? Even if I have to be affected by cancer because of my karma, please give me peaceful soul departure because I am prepared for any eventuality. As long as you are with me, I am not worried even for my death.”
As I was very tired because of extreme shock of cancer clubbed with continuous crying with pond of tears, I slept at the feet of Maha Periva without my conscious.
At about 4 ‘o clock in the morning, I could realize that Maha Periva was communicating with me as usual which I give below in his own words.”
Periva “You asked me so much of questions. Understand one thing that every person is facing some problem in the world. You are not the only person who is suffering. However I did so much for you as you listed, but at same time are you not confident that you will be saved by me from this cancer threat also. You go to doctor and you will know, why I was constantly insisting for Gayathri chanting. Even if the report confirms your cancer, I will take care of you in such a way that the cancer does not grow further”
The communication stopped.
On 23rd November 2015, I went to Doctor to receive the report and doctor’s opinion on the report .I was waiting in the waiting hall for my turn to come.
Finally, at about 7.00 P.M. we were called and doctor said that the report confirms cancer. I had my shock of my life and my blood was running cold.
But doctor continued further that the cancer was detected at very early stage and I give below the doctor’s points one by one for your kind reference:
Cancer was detected very early.
The boils with inner tissues were removed without any traces.
Type of cancer is “Verrucous Carcinoma”
I am really lucky enough because this type of cancer does not grow further hence no need for any radio therapy or chemo therapy is required.
This type of cancer is called “lucky cancer” which affects one in few lakhs.
Finally doctor confirmed that this is a benign type of cancer and it will not grow further.
“Confirmation,
I can lead my life. “
How, Maha Periva is Right?
1. Maha Periva insisted me to chant Gayathri Mantram which enabled me to detect pain while chanting and led to cancer detection at an early stage.
2. Periva said even it is cancer it will not grow further and you can be as usual. Doctor’s report and opinion proved that Periva translated his own statement as reality.
3. Periva’s answers to all my questions were proved right.
It is once again confirmed that ,
I have translated Periva’s communication in my own words, within my limited knowledge and capacity. Every letter and words are a well woven fabric of my feelings. I am sure the fabric of Rajagopal and the fragrance of Maha Periva will give you enormous confidence in leading your life and facing the problem.

Message for the Day…” Our Mental tendencies [samskaras] are like Flowing Water …”
Have the Lord’s name within and the practice of your duty(swadharma) without. Even while engaging in selfless service, let your mind repeat the Lord’s Name. When rains pour on the mountain peaks and the water hurries down on all sides, no river emerges therefrom. However when the waters flow in a single direction, first a brook, then a stream, then a torrent, and finally a river is formed, and the rains reach the sea. Water that runs in one direction reaches the sea; water that flows in four directions soaks in and is lost. Mental tendencies (samskaras) are like this. Of what use are they if they merely come and go, this way today and that way tomorrow? The holy stream of good inborn desires must flow full and steady along the fields of holy thoughts and finally abide in the great ocean of bliss at the moment of death.
