உலகத் தண்ணீர் நாள்: மார்ச் 22

வெயில் காலம் வருகிறது. உடல் வெப்பத்தையும் தண்ணீர் தாகத்தையும் தணித்துக்கொள்ளத் தண்ணீர் தேவைப்படும். அந்தக் காலத்தில் வீட்டுக்கொரு பானைத் தண்ணீர் தாகம் தணித்தது. பொது இடங்களில் தண்ணீர் பந்தல்கள் முளைத்தன. தண்ணீரைப் போய் யாராவது விற்பார்களா என்று கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்த காலம் போய், தண்ணீர் வர்த்தகம் மிகப் பெரிய அளவில் கோலோச்சிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் காலம் இது.

தண்ணீர் இன்றைக்கு இலவசமில்லை. எவ்வளவு அவசரமென்றாலும், ஒரு லிட்டர் பாட்டில் குடிநீரை 15-20 ரூபாய் கொடுத்து வாங்க வேண்டிய நிலையில் இருக்கிறோம். பாட்டில் குடிநீர் நம் பாக்கெட்டைப் பதம் பார்ப்பது மட்டுமில்லாமல், வேறு பல சூழலியல் கேடுகளையும் சேர்த்தே செய்கிறது. அவை என்ன?:

>> சாப்பிடாமல் ஒருவர் சராசரியாக 10 நாட்களுக்கு மேல் உயிர் வாழ முடியும். ஆனால், தண்ணீர் குடிக்காமல் மூன்று முதல் 5 நாட்கள்தான் இருக்க முடியும். எனவே, சுத்தமான, குறைந்த விலையில் கிடைக்கக்கூடிய தண்ணீர் என்பது ஒவ்வொருவருடைய அடிப்படை உரிமை.

>> உலகில் தூய்மையின் அடையாளமாகக் கருதப்படும் தண்ணீர் மாசுபாட்டதற்கு அடிப்படைக் காரணம் நகர்மயமாதலும், தொழிற்சாலைகளும்தான். ஆனால், இன்றைக்குத் தொழிற்சாலைகள் சுத்தமான தண்ணீர் என்பதையே ஒரு விற்பனைப் பண்டமாக்கிவிட்டன.

>> 19-ம் நூற்றாண்டில் தங்கம் மதிப்புமிக்கதாக இருந்ததால், பணக்காரர்கள், முதலாளிகள் அதைத் தேடி ஓடினர். கடந்த நூற்றாண்டில் ‘கறுப்புத் தங்கம்’ என்று பெட்ரோல் அழைக்கப்பட்டது போல், இந்த நூற்றாண்டில் ‘நீலத் தங்கம்’ என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டுத் தண்ணீர் வர்த்தகத்தில் முதலீடுகள் குவிந்துள்ளன. பாட்டில் குடிநீர் விற்பனை மட்டுமல்லாமல், நகராட்சி தண்ணீர் விநியோகத்திலும் பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனங்கள் கால்பதிப்பதைக் கவனிக்க வேண்டும்.

> சுற்றுப்புறச் சுகாதாரம், உடல்நல அக்கறை அதிகமுள்ள இந்தக் காலத்தில் பாட்டில் குடிநீர்தான் சுத்தமானது என்று மூடநம்பிக்கை பரவலாக உள்ளது. அது மாநகராட்சி, நகராட்சி தண்ணீரோ, ஆழ்துளைக் கிணற்றுத் தண்ணீரோ – குடிக்கக்கூடிய தண்ணீர் இன்னமும் குறைந்த செலவில் கிடைத்துக்கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறது. அதைக் காய்ச்சிப் பயன்படுத்தாமல் பாட்டில் குடிநீரைக் குடிப்பதால், பிளாஸ்டிக் குப்பை கோடிக்கணக்கில் சேர்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

>> பாட்டில் குடிநீர் பயன்பாட்டால், ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் 15 கோடி கிலோ பிளாஸ்டிக் குப்பை சேர்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது. இது 7,500 திமிங்கிலங்களின் எடைக்குச் சமம். அமெரிக்காவில் ஒரு நாளில் தூக்கியெறியப்படும் குடிநீர் பாட்டில்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 6 கோடி.

>> வடக்கு பசிஃபிக் குப்பை சுழற்சி (Gyre) என்ற பெரும் குப்பை மலை பசிஃபிக் கடலில் சுழன்று கொண்டிருக்கிறது. இதன் குறைந்தபட்சப் பரப்பு ஏழு லட்சம் சதுரக் கிலோமீட்டர்.

>> அமெரிக்காவிலேயே வாங்கப்படும் ஐந்து பிளாஸ்டிக் குடிநீர் பாட்டில்களில் ஒன்று மட்டுமே மறுசுழற்சிக்குச் செல்கிறது. இந்திய நிலைமையைப் பற்றி சொல்லவே வேண்டாம். இந்தியாவில் 100-ல் 5 பிளாஸ்டிக் பாட்டில்கள் மறுசுழற்சிக்குச் செல்வதே ஆச்சரியம்தான்.

>> பிளாஸ்டிக் (PET) பாட்டில்கள், பிளாஸ்டிக் கலன்கள் உற்பத்தியில் பாதிக்கு மேல் குடிநீர் பாட்டில்கள் பயன்பாட்டுக்காகவே உற்பத்தி செய்யப்படுகின்றன.

>> ஒரு லிட்டர் பாட்டில் குடிநீரின் உற்பத்தி நடைமுறை, போக்குவரத்து போன்றவற்றுக்காகக் குறைந்தபட்சம் 100 மி.லி. பெட்ரோல் செலவாகிறது. அது மட்டுமல்லாமல் பெட் பாட்டில்களின் அடிப்படை மூலப்பொருள் கச்சா எண்ணெய்தான். பெட் பிளாஸ்டிக் பாட்டில்கள் தயாரிப்பு, பயன்பாடு, குப்பையாகப் போடப்படுவது என பல்வேறு வகைகளில் சுற்றுச்சூழல் மாசுபடுகிறது, சந்தேகமில்லாமல் புவி வெப்பமடைகிறது.

>> இன்றைக்குச் சந்தையில் ஒரு லிட்டர் பெட்ரோல் – டீசலின் சராசரி விலை ரூ. 50 – 60. ஒரு லிட்டர் பாட்டில் குடிநீரின் விலை சராசரியாக ரூ. 15-20. அதாவது நான்கில் அல்லது மூன்றில் ஒரு பாகம். எதிர்காலத்தில் பாட்டில் குடிநீரின் விலை இன்னும் அதிகரிக்கலாம். இதிலிருந்து நாம் எவ்வளவு வீணாகச் செலவு செய்கிறோம் என்பதை உணர்ந்துகொள்ளலாம். அது மட்டுமல்ல, கச்சா எண்ணெயின் கடினமான சுத்திகரிப்பு நடைமுறையில் முதலீடு செய்து பெட்ரோல், டீசலாகப் பிரித்து விற்பதை விடவும், எளிதாகக் கிடைக்கும் தண்ணீரைச் சுத்திகரித்து ஒரு நிறுவனம் எவ்வளவு சம்பாதிக்கிறது என்பதையும் தெரிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.

> ஒரு பாட்டில் குடிநீரை உற்பத்தி செய்வதில் தண்ணீரைவிட, பிளாஸ்டிக் பாட்டில், மூடி, லேபிள் போன்ற மற்ற அம்சங்களுக்கே அதிக அளவு செலவிடப்படுகிறது. பிறகு பாட்டிலைப் பேக் செய்ய, போக்குவரத்துக்கு, கடைசியாக மயக்கும் விளம்பரத்துக்குச் செலவு செய்யப்படுகிறது.

>> பாட்டில் குடிநீர் நிறுவனங்கள் ஆறுகள், நீர்நிலைகளில் இருந்து ஒரு லிட்டருக்கு 1.50 பைசா முதல் 3.75 பைசா என்ற விலையில் தண்ணீரை மிகக் குறைந்த விலைக்கு வாங்குகின்றன. அதைச் சுத்திகரிக்க 0.25 பைசா, பிளாஸ்டிக் பாட்டிலுக்கு 3-4 ரூபாய் என வைத்துக்கொண்டாலும், மொத்தச் செலவு 5 ரூபாயைத் தாண்டாது. பிறகு இதையே 4 – 5 மடங்கு லாபத்தில் விற்கின்றன.

>> குளிர்பான நிறுவனங்கள் தங்களுடைய விற்பனை சந்தையின் முக்கிய அம்சமாகப் பாட்டில் குடிநீரை வைத்திருக்கின்றன. இரண்டுக்குமான விலை வித்தியாசம் அதிகமில்லை. பாட்டில் குடிநீருக்கான உற்பத்திச் செலவும் குறைவு. அதேநேரம் குளிர்பானம் அருந்தாதவர்கள்கூட, பாட்டில் குடிநீரைக் குடிக்கிறார்கள். சாதாரணக் குடிநீர் சீர்கெட்டுவிட்டது என்ற பிரசாரத்துக்கும், பாட்டில் குடிநீர் மிகப் பெரிய அளவில் விளம்பரப்படுத்தப்படுவதற்கும் இதுவே அடிப்படைக் காரணம்.

>> அதேநேரம் ஆற்றுநீரோ, ஆழ்துளைக் கிணற்று நீரோ பெரிதாக எந்தச் சுத்திகரிப்பு நடைமுறைகளுக்கும் உட்படுத்தப்படாமல் பாட்டில்களில் அடைத்து விற்கப்படுவதாக குற்றஞ்சாட்டப்படுகிறது. பாட்டில் குடிநீரில் பூச்சிக்கொல்லிகள் கண்டறியப்பட்டது இதற்கு மிகச் சிறந்த உதாரணம்.

>> புது டெல்லி ‘அறிவியல், சுற்றுச்சூழல் மையம்’ (சி.எஸ்.இ.) 2003-ல் நடத்திய பரிசோதனை முடிவின்படி அதிகம் விற்பனையாகும் பிரபல நிறுவனங்களின் பாட்டில் குடிநீர் மாதிரிகளில் விவசாயத்தில் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் லிண்டேன், மாலத்தியான், குளோர்பைரிஃபாஸ், டி.டி.டி. ஆகிய பூச்சிக்கொல்லி எச்சங்கள் அதிக அளவில் இருந்தது கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டது.

>> பாட்டில் குடிநீரில் இருக்கும் நஞ்சு நீண்ட காலமாக உடலில் சேர்வது புற்றுநோய், கல்லீரல், சிறுநீரகங்களைச் சிதைக்கக்கூடியதாகவும், நரம்புமண்டலக் கோளாறுகளை உருவாக்கக்கூடியதாகவும், நோயெதிர்ப்புசக்தி குறைபாடு போன்றவற்றை ஏற்படுத்தவும் வாய்ப்புள்ளது.

>> 2007-2012-ம் ஆண்டுவரையிலான காலத்தில் சென்னையில் விற்பனை செய்யப்படும் 70 நிறுவனங்களின் சுத்திகரிக்கப்பட்ட பாட்டில் குடிநீரில் தீமை பயக்கும் பாக்டீரியா இருப்பது சென்னை மாநகராட்சி மேற்கொண்ட பரிசோதனைகளில் தெரியவந்தது.

> பாட்டில் குடிநீர், நீண்ட நேரம் வெயிலில் இருக்கும்போது பிளாஸ்டிக்கில் இருக்கும் தாலேட் போன்ற வேதிப்பொருட்கள் தண்ணீருடன் கலந்துவிட வாய்ப்பு அதிகம். அது ஒரு முறை மட்டுமே பயன்படுத்தக்கூடிய பிளாஸ்டிக் என்பதை மறந்துவிட வேண்டாம்.

இப்படியாக நாம் வாங்கும் ஒவ்வொரு குடிநீர் பாட்டிலும் உலகின் வளத்தைச் சுரண்டி, சுற்றுச்சூழல் மாசுபாட்டை பெருமளவு உருவாக்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. அடுத்து என்ன செய்வது என்று சிந்திப்போம்.

பாட்டில் குடிநீர்: மாற்று என்ன?

>> நகராட்சிக் குழாயில் கிடைக்கும் தண்ணீரை நன்றாகக் காய்ச்சி, வடிகட்டி, ஆற வைத்துத் தாராளமாகக் குடிக்கலாம். அதனால் உடலுக்கு எந்தக் கெடுதலும் இல்லை. அது விலை குறைந்தது, பாதுகாப்பானது, எப்போதும் கிடைப்பது.

>> ஒரு எவர்சில்வர் தண்ணீர் பாட்டில் அல்லது நல்ல தரமான பிளாஸ்டிக்கில் விற்கப்படும் பாட்டிலில் வீட்டிலிருந்தே எப்போதும் தண்ணீரை நிரப்பி செல்லலாம். இதனால் தேவையற்ற செலவு குறையும், பாட்டில் தண்ணீரில் இருக்கும் பூச்சிக்கொல்லி உள்ளிட்ட நச்சுகள் நம் உடலில் சேராமலும் இருக்கும்.

>> நிறுவனங்கள், அமைப்புகள் தங்களுடைய வளாகங்களில் பாட்டில் குடிநீரைத் தடை செய்து, சுத்தமான தண்ணீரை விநியோகிக்க ஏற்பாடு செய்யலாம்.

குடிநீரும் இந்தியாவும்

>> 2013-ல் இந்திய பாட்டில் குடிநீர் சந்தையின் மதிப்பு ரூ. 6,000 கோடி.

>> பாட்டில் குடிநீர் விற்பனையில் உலக அளவில் இந்தியா 10-வது இடத்தில் உள்ளது.

> சராசரியாக நகராட்சி குழாய் குடிநீரைப் போலப் பத்து மடங்கு விலையில் பாட்டில் குடிநீர் விற்கப்படுகிறது.

Butcher’s Broom: Can Fruits Grow on Leaves…….?

Butcher’s Broom, or Ruscus aculeatus, is a low-growing perennial shrub with tough, erect, stems and very rigid leaves that terminate in a sharp spine. From the center of the leaves grow small greenish-white flowers that blossom in early spring and develop into red berries in autumn. The tiny red berries are attached directly to the leaves by a short stem, making it a very strange looking plant.

The Butcher’s broom, however, is not breaking any rules of the plant kingdom, because what appears to be leaves are actually modified stems called cladodes, that have been flattened to not only look like leaves but serve their function as well.

Butcher’s broom is widely distributed, from Iran to the Mediterranean and the southern United States. They have been used for more than 2,000 years as laxative and diuretic and to treat various ailments such as hemorrhoids, varicose veins, itching, and swelling. The young shoots of the plant are also eaten like those of asparagus. The stiff twigs were once bundled together and used by butchers to keep their cutting boards clean, from which came its common English name: butcher’s broom. It is also known by others names such as “Knee Holly”, because of its knee height, “Jew’s Myrtle”, for its use during the Feast of Tabernacles, “Sweet Broom” and “Pettigree”, although its meaning is not clear.

Extracts of butcher’s broom have been used throughout the ages, but the medicinal use of this plant did not become common until the last century. Investigation in the 1950s indicated that butcher’s broom could induce constriction of veins, because of which it is still widely used for treating certain circulatory diseases. It also contains an alkaloid which inhibits the passing of sodium ions across the cell membrane and thus is an effective anti-arrhythmic substance.

Butcher’s broom is also widely planted in gardens and its berries used as decorations.

Soon, Eat Meat Without Killing Animals for It, Thanks to This Indian-American Scientist & His Team !!!

Memphis Meats Inc., a San Francisco-based company founded by three scientists, has developed a new technique to produce meat from stem cells of animals. Uma S Valeti, an Indian-American cardiologist, is the CEO and one of the co-founders of Memphis Meats.

By bringing meat production into the lab, this team can soon make it possible for people to eat meat without actually killing animals.

According Uma Valeti, the meat is sustainable, healthier, safer, and cruelty free. It does not lead to any side effects like bacterial contamination or high saturated fat. Additionally, the technique produces 90 percent less greenhouse emissions and does not require antibiotics as used in traditional meat production.

For the production, the team identifies cells that are capable of renewing themselves, from a targeted animal. These cells are then provided with oxygen and nutrients like sugar, minerals, etc. while they develop inside bio-reactor tanks into skeletal muscle and can be harvested in nine to 21 days. The team is currently working on beef, chicken and pork cells, and have already conducted test runs on beef meat.

“Our goal is to be in restaurants in three years and retail in five years. In 2021, we want to be in retail or even earlier,” Uma Valeti told PTI.

The first manufacturing base will be set up in the US and he added that they are also exploring ideas about setting centres in India and China very soon.

Cardiologist Uma Valeti is an associate professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota and president of the Twin Cities American Heart Association. Other members of the team include Nicholas Genovese, a stem cell biologist, and Will Clem, a biomedical engineer who owns a chain of barbeque restaurants in Memphis, Tennessee.

Currently, even though the source cells can be collected without killing the animals, the process starts with the help of fetal bovine serum that is drawn from the blood of unborn calves. Memphis Meats is working on replacing the serum with a plant-based alternative very soon, to completely end the practice of extracting it from animals.

“Our concept is simple. Instead of farming animals to obtain their meat, why not farm the meat directly? To that end, we’re combining decades of experience in both the culinary and scientific fields to farm real meat cells—without the animals—in a process that is healthier, safer, and more sustainable than conventional animal agriculture,” says their website.

How to see a solar eclipse at 35,000 ft in the air?…. Here’s the answer!

It’s very rare that a company fulfill its customer’s wish. And that too at about 35,000 feet in the air.

But Alaska Airlines has done that by changing its flight path on Tuesday, so that passengers could enjoy the view of solar eclipse.

The airliner made this plan a year ago when one of the passengers, Joseph Rao, who is the associate astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium, informed it that Alaska Airlines flight 870 from Anchorage to Honolulu would intersect the eclipse’s path.

But there was a catch. The flight’s scheduled departure time was 25 minutes too early to see the eclipse.

After several deliberations the airline decided to adjust the timing to give passengers a chance to witness the grand spectacle.

This 12-Year-Old Singing Prodigy Was Born with 40 Fractures. But That Did Not Break His Spirit….

Sparsh Shah, a 12-year-old singing prodigy who lives in the US, was born with almost 40 fractures. He has given more than 45 performances in just the last year-and-a-half. Read his inspirational story here.

Sparsh (aka Purhythm) has written 10 songs – “This Love Will Never Fade,” “There’s Always Tomorrow,” “Why’d You Have To Leave Me?”, “You Are My Heroes,” “Count on Me,” “A Little Bit of Respect,” “Turn Around,” “Birthday Wishes,” “You’re The One,” and “No One Knows.” He has composed the music for most of them too.

Aren’t you still feeling that beat? Sparsh has been learning Hindustani classical music for the last seven-and-a-half years and American vocal music for the last three years.

Sparsh is multi-talented. He performs at community events and has appeared on local radio stations and television shows, besides hosting shows as an MC.

He has memorized 250 digits of Pi, can say the 12 longest words in the English dictionary in less than 18 seconds, and can speak in four different accents in English. He has written several poems, short stories, motivational/funny speeches (“I am Disabled”), etc., and acted in the developmental reading of a play called The Greatest Choice at the Crossroads theatre in New Jersey. He was able to spell a 45 letter word, “Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis,” at the age of 6.

Hiren and Jigisha Shah migrated to the US some 14 years ago. In 2003, when Sparsh was born, they could never have imagined their little boy would touch millions of hearts soon.

His parents, however, could experience the joy of holding their baby only after six months of his birth – Sparsh had broken 35-40 bones while emerging from his mother’s womb.

Sparsh was born with an incurable disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

This condition makes his bones extremely fragile and brittle – even a hard handshake can break his bones. He cannot bear weight on his hands and legs, so he cannot walk or run like other normal kids. He has had more than 125 fractures in the first 12 years of his life already and the doctors cannot predict how many more are to come.

In April 2015, Sparsh participated in and won the prestigious talent competition Young Voice of NYC, and was honoured to be made the ‘Youth Ambassador’ for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He now supports the hospital in spreading awareness about the fight against pediatric cancer.

Sparsh has been a catalyst in helping raise over half a million dollars for various philanthropic organisations.

Sparsh was also a member of the Watt NXT Robotics team that won at the state and regional levels in the US. He participated in the first World Robotics Championship in St. Louis, MO in 2015. Sparsh won the first prize in the speech competition about Dr.Ambedkar at the Indian Consulate in New York City in November 2015. Sparsh also participated won the Swardhara Singing Competition organized by Marathi Vishwa, New Jersey, in February 2016.

He always thanks his parents and grandparents for his success:

“I don’t see myself as disabled. I just dis the ‘dis’ from disabled. Most people with disability always keep thinking about their disability and that makes others think about it too. I want to be the courage of such people,” says Sparsh with a smile.

When Sparsh was just three years old, he started learning the keyboard and reading books. However, as his bones kept breaking, it was difficult for him to continue to learn the keyboard and he had to stop playing.

Once, when he was three-and-a-half, his family was travelling in the car and his father switched on the radio. To his parents’ surprise, Sparsh remembered the song that was playing on the radio and started singing along. They thought that he perhaps knew the song because it was a well known one. But then, he sang the second, the third and even the fourth song that was played on the radio. When they asked Sparsh about this, he said his preschool bus driver played the same channel  and that is how he had memorized all the songs. This was the beginning of the making of this gifted singer and musician.

“Dreams are not enough, Hard work is what turns them into reality! And so, he makes sure that he works hard enough to make his dreams come true,” says Jigisha Shah, Sparsh’s mother.

Sparsh started learning Indian classical music at the age of 6 and is a student of Pandit Jasraj Institute of Music (PJIM) since 2009. He also learns American vocal music.

“All we tell him is that no matter what situation you have in life, never limit yourself!. We believe that Sparsh is a miracle who has come to this world to do something extra special,” says Hiren Shah (Sparsh’s father)

A 7th grader, Sparsh is also excellent in his studies. He has a 5-year-old brother named Anuj who plays video games with him.

Sparsh has gone through multiple surgeries for his brittle bones. His parents help him write when he has fractures, or he uses voice to text technology to do his homework.

When asked how he deals with the pain, he says: “There is not much you can do about pain…isn’t it? Crying is just a natural response to pain but you need to smile. This is what my Papa taught me since I was small. He said that I should tell my bones to smile whenever there is a fracture. If I don’t smile at them, they won’t respond to me with a smile. And so, whenever there is an x-ray after a fracture, I look at my bones and say – Smile please bones.”

Sparsh loves rapping as he believes that rap makes even sad songs come alive; rapping keeps the spark going. This huge fan of Eminem also loves Bollywood songs. “Abhi mujh me kahi” by Sonu Nigam is his favourite Hindi song.

He met musician Neel a year-and-a-half ago, at a Karaoke competition. They sang together. Since then, Neel and Sparsh have been inseparable musical buddies and they have written a wonderful motivational duet: “Count On Me.”

Sparsh recently auditioned for America’s Got Talent and is waiting for the results, which will be out by March 2016.

He won the first prize in Gaan Nipun Spardha, a prestigious singing competition organized by PJIM and was awarded a certificate of recognition by none other than the stalwart of Hindustani classical music, Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj, on February 27, 2016.

Despite all the challenges he has faced, Sparsh’s spirit is unbreakable. He aspires to sing in front of a billion people one day.

These 11 Rare Paintings of India Were Recently Released by the New York Public Library…

The New York Public Library has digitized and released a collection of about 1,80,000 items, including pictures, manuscripts, posters, paintings, etc., and all of them are free for download and use by everyone.

From maps of Asia to amazing photographs of New York City, the collection has them all. Amongst these is a vast collection of 178 original coloured paintings of India, illustrating the trade, costumes, and culture of the country. The paintings were made between 1780 and 1858, and their digital versions look excellent. With camels and elephants, salt trade and temples – the amazing collection will take you way back in time.

We’ve been seeing it for years. The iMac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iPad — the omnipresent “i” prefix has marked most Apple products since the release of the iMac in 1998. But why? What does it mean?

The Internet has been abuzz recently with remembering exactly what Apple’s “i” stands for. At an Apple event in 1998, Steve Jobs introduced the iMac, explaining the link between “i” and “Mac.”

“iMac comes from the marriage of the excitement of the Internet with the simplicity of Macintosh,” he said. “We are targeting this for the no. 1 use that consumers tell us they want a computer for, which is to get on the Internet simply and fast.”

In 1998, the “i” in iMac stood for Internet. Jobs followed these statements with a slide that expanded upon what else the “i” means to Apple:

Besides Internet, Apple’s prefix also stood for individual, instruct, inform and inspire.

Since then, the “i” has moved beyond its Internet-centric meaning; Apple probably didn’t have the Internet in mind when naming the original iPod.

When the iPhone was announced in 2007, one of its three key ingredients was Internet communication, bringing the “i” back to its original intended meaning of Internet. (The other two fundamentals were music and phone calls.)

Since then, nearly every device has had some form of Internet connectivity built in, and the “i” has lost its association with that specific meaning and has come to represent the Apple brand.

But as Apple continues to grow into other markets, including smartwatches and TV boxes, its famous prefix seems to be falling to the wayside. Instead of iWatch and iTV, we have Apple Watch and Apple TV. Perhaps this is because we no longer need to know our devices connect to the Internet — it’s something we’ve come to expect.

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. He made three turns around the planet before returning safely.

February 20, 1962. John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth on this date. He made three turns around the planet before returning safely in his space capsule, which was called Friendship 7. He followed two Russian cosmonauts in making this early orbit of our planet: Yuri Gagarin ( April 1961) and Gherman Titov (August 1961).

While Glenn was in orbit, NASA controllers received an indication that the heat shield on his craft had come loose. They instructed Glenn not to jettison the rockets underneath the heat shield during re-entry, because the rockets might be able to hold the shield in place. Fortunately, the indication turned out to be a false alarm.

Glenn returned to space at age 77 aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1995, making him the oldest person to fly in space. His mission’s primary scientific aim at that time was to study the effects of spaceflight on seniors.
