காமராஜர் ஆட்சியில் பொதுப்பணி அமைச்சராகவும், ஆதிதிராவிடர் நலத்துறை அமைச்சராகவும், உள்துறை அமைச்சராகவும், பணியாற்றியவர் கக்கன். அவரது எளிமைப் பண்புகளையும் நிகழ்வுகளையும் தியாகசீலர் கக்கன் எனும் நூல் மூலம் நூறு அத்தியாயங்களில் எழுதி தொகுத்திருக்கிறார் முனைவர் இளசை சுந்தரம்.

கக்கன் அவர்களோடு தங்களது அனுபவங்களை அரசுச் செயலாளராக பணியாற்றிய அ.பத்மநாபன் ஐ.ஏ.எஸ் உள்ளிட்ட பலரும் சுவைபட கூறியுள்ளனர். பத்திரிகைச் செய்திகளும் இணைத்து ஓரளவுக்கு முழுமையான வரலாறாக தொகுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஆனால் நம் நாட்டில் நல்ல பல தலைவர்களும் வாழ்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை இளைய தலைமுறையினருக்கு எடுத்துச் சொல்லவேண்டியுள்ளது. காலத்தின் தேவை கருதி நூலை கொண்டுவருவதோடு அதை சிறப்பாக வெளியிட்டுள்ள மதுரா டிராவல்ஸ் வி.கே.டி.பாலனை மனமாரப் பாராட்டலாம்.

ஒருமுறை புதுக்கோட்டை மாவட்டத்தில் கக்கன் சுற்றுப்பயணம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்தார். சுற்றுப்பயண நாள்களைக் கணக்கிட்டு உடைகளை எடுத்துச் செல்வது வழக்கம்.

குளியலறைக்குள் சென்ற அமைச்சர் என்ன ஆனார்?

ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட நாளில் சுற்றுப்பயணம் முடிந்து வீட்டிற்குத் திரும்ப வேண்டும். அன்று உடுத்த வேண்டிய வேட்டியை எடுதது உடுத்திக்கொள்ள முற்பட்டார். கட்டிக் கொள்ள முடியாத அளவுக்குக் கிழிந்திருந்ததைக் கண்டு மனம் சலனம் அடையவில்லை. உடனே அழுக்காயிருந்த ஒரு வேட்டியை எடுத்துச் சோப்புப் போட்டுத் துவைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

குளியலறைக்குள் சென்ற அமைச்சரை வெளியில் நீண்ட நேரமாகக் காணோமே என்று காவலர்கள் கதவைத் தட்டினர். அமைச்சர் துணி துவைப்பதைக் கண்டு அதிர்ந்து போயினர். அமைச்சரின் இந்த நிலை தெரிந்திருந்தால் பணியாளரே துவைத்துக் கொடுத்திருப்பார்.

அல்லது அதிகாரிகளே ஒரு புதுவேட்டியை வாங்கிக் கொடுத்திருப்பார்கள். ஆனால் தாமே துவைத்து வெயிலில் உலர்த்திக் கொண்டு நின்ற அமைச்சரைப்பார்த்த அதிகாரிகள் உட்பட அனைவரும் அதிர்ச்சியுடன் புன்னகைத்தனர். கக்கனோ அமைச்சராக இல்லாமல் கக்கன்

என்ற தனிமனிதனாக நின்று புன்னகைத்தார். அந்த வேட்டி உலர்ந்த பின் உடுத்திக்கொண்டு சுற்றுப்பயணத்தைத் தொடர்ந்தார். அந்நாளைய செய்தித்தாள்கள் இச்செய்தியை வெளியிட்டன.

ஆலயப் பிரவேசத்தில் கக்கன்

1920ஆம் ஆண்டு வாக்கில் வைத்தியநாதய்யர் அவர்களுக்குக் கக்கன் அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்கப்பட்டார். கக்கன் கல்வியில் கொண்டிருந்த ஆர்வமும், அவர் பொதுத்தொண்டில் காட்டும் நேர்மையும் ஐயரை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது. அதனால், தமது வீட்டிலேயே தங்க இடம் கொடுத்தார். கக்கனின் பழக்க வழக்கங்களைக் கண்டு வியந்து போன ஐயர் தமது வீட்டிலேயே உணவு கொடுத்தார்.

தொடர்ந்து தம் மக்களோடும் தம் மனைவியோடும் கக்கன் காட்டும் பாச உணர்வு ஐயரைப் பெரிதும் கவர்ந்தது. கக்கனைத் தம் மக்களில் ஒருவனாகவே கருதினார். தாழ்த்தப்பட்ட மக்களின் நலனுக்காகத் தம்மை அர்ப்பணம் செய்துகொண்ட ஐயர் கக்கனுடன் நெருங்கிப் பழகும்போதுதான் பல உள்ளுணர்வுகளைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடிந்ததாம். 1939ஆம் ஆண்டு திருக்கோவில் நுழைவு (ஆலயப் பிரவேசம்) செய்தபோது அவ்வுணர்வுகளை மனதில் தாங்கியே ஆலயப் பிரவேசக் குழுவில் கக்கனையும் இணைத்துக்கொண்டார்.

நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினராக

அதற்குப் பின்னால் கக்கன் மாவட்டக் காங்கிரஸ் கமிட்டி உறுப்பினர் தேர்தலில் நின்றபோது தாமே தேர்தலில் போட்டியிட்டது போல் செயல்பட்டதை அவர் பலமுறை சொல்லி மகிழ்ந்திருக்கிறார். அவ்வாறு படிப்படியாக உயர்த்தி இந்த நாட்டின் சட்டசபை உறுப்பினராகவும் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினராகவும் உயர்த்தி அழகு பார்த்தவர் ஐயர்.

1955ஆம் ஆண்டு நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினராகவும் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியின் தமிழ்நாட்டுத் தலைவராகவும் இருந்தார் கக்கன். உடல்நலக் குறைவாக இருந்த ஐயர் 1955ஆம் ஆண்டு பிப்ரவரி 23ஆம் நாள் காலமானார். இச்செய்தி கேட்டு மதுரைக்கு விரைந்தார் கக்கன். அவரது இறுதிச் சடங்கில் கக்கனும் மொட்டையடித்துக்கொண்டார். ஐயரின் பிள்ளைகளுடன் பிள்ளையாக நின்றார். இதைப் பலரும் எதிர்த்தனர்.

வளர்ப்பால் மகனானவர்

அதற்கு அவது பிள்ளைகள் நாங்கள் பிறப்பால் மகன்களானோம். ஆனால், கக்கன் வளர்ப்பால் மகனானவர். ஆகவே எங்களுக்கு என்ன உரிமை இருக்கிறதோ அதே உரிமை கக்கனுக்கும் இருக்கிறது என்று வைத்தியநாதய்யரின் மனைவியும் அவரது மக்களும் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டு ஐயர் இன சமுதாயத் தலைவர்கள் வாயடைத்துப் போயினர்.

அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதி

1979ஆம் ஆண்டு தொடக்கத்தில் கக்கன் மதுரைக்குச் சென்றிருந்தார். அப்போது உடல் நலக்குறைவு ஏற்பட்டது. மதுரை அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டார். அன்றைய முதலமைச்சரான எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அப்போது மதுரை மாவட்டத்தில் சுற்றுப்பயணம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்தார். கக்கன் மருத்துவமனயில் இருக்கும் செய்தியைக் கேள்வியுற்று அவரைச் சந்திக்க விரம்பினார். முன்னறிவிப்பின்றிக் கக்கனை பார்த்து நலன் விசாரிக்க மதுரை அரசு மருத்துவமனைக்குச் சென்றார்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர் நலம் விசாரிப்பு

ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் சாதாரண வார்டில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த கக்கனின் அறையில் அவசரமாக எங்கிருந்தோ சேர்கள் கொண்டு வந்து போடப்பட்டன. உடம்பில் ஒரு துண்டு மட்டும் போர்த்திக்கொண்டு இருந்தவரைப் பார்த்து எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.கண்கலங்கிவிட்டார். காமராஜர் ஆட்சியில் போலீஸ் மந்திரியாக பணியாற்றியவர்.

உடனே எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ‘உங்களுக்கு நான் என்ன உதவி செய்யவேண்டும்?’ எனக் கேட்க, ‘உங்கள் அன்பு இருந்தால் போதும் நீங்கள் வந்ததே சந்தோஷம்’ என்று கூறினார் கக்கன்.

எப்படி மனம் வந்தது?

‘விசேஷ வார்டுக்கு மாற்றச் சொல்லவா?’ எனக் கேட்டார் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ‘வேண்டாம்’ என மறுத்துவிட்டார் கக்கன்.

ஆனாலும் எம்ஜிஆர் மனம் பொறுக்காமல், மருத்துவமனையின் பொறுப்பாளரை அழைத்தார், ‘,இவர் யார் என்று தெரியுமா? இவரது உழைப்பால் பெற்ற சுதந்திரத்தால் தான் நாம் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறோம். இவரை இதுமாதிரி பொதுமக்களோடு மக்களாக நடத்த உங்களுக்கு எப்படி மனம் வந்தது?’ என்று கேட்டதோடு நில்லாமல் தனியறை வசதியும் உயர்தர மருத்துவமும் கிடைக்க அப்போதே அதிகாரிகளுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டார்.

Few Misconceptions and Myths Busted….!!!

YOU may need to sit down before you continue reading. It appears much of what you thought you knew about the world is simply not true.

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not in London has released the top 50 misconceptions we have about planet Earth and you could be in for a shock.

Modern day facts — termed “faux facts” by Ripley’s — have been put under the microscope and proven by experts to be factually incorrect. Think Everest is the highest mountain and that coffee is made from beans? Think again.

Instead our beliefs are thought to be a mash up of old wives tales, rumours and a case of good old Chinese whispers.

A spokesperson for Ripley’s Believe It Or Not said it was understandable most of us have fallen for these myths.

“If you’re told something enough times, you’re sure to start believing it.

“The misconceptions in this list are all pretty plausible, so it’s understandable that many … will have read it and been certain it’s true, with many of us being told these from an early age.

“Unbelievably, all of these commonly believed facts are in fact common misconceptions that we have myths and misconceptions.

“As our founder Robert Ripley used to say, it is often the strangest things that are true.”

Here are some of the more common myths busted::

1. Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world

Not true. While Mount Everest is officially known as the tallest mountain in the world, experts claim that in technical terms this is not true.

The summit of Mount Everest is higher above sea level than the summit of any other mountain however Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the tallest when measured from base to summit.

2. The Great Wall of China can be seen from space

It is commonly believed that one of the greatest feats of mankind is so huge it can be seen from the moon. However Apollo astronauts have confirmed that you can’t see the Great Wall of China from above and that all you can see from the moon is the white and blue marble of Earth.

3. Coffee is made from beans

Coffee fanatics obsess over their coffee beans. But while many assume that coffee comes from coffee beans, experts say they are actually made from seeds called a bean.

4. Sushi means “raw fish”

Although one of the common ingredients may be raw fish, sushi actually means “sour tasting”.

5. Toilets flush in different directions because of different hemispheres

Remember when you first went overseas and were told to expect toilet water to spin in a different direction because you were in a different hemisphere?

Well it’s not actually due to the hemisphere: the real reason is just that the water jets point in the opposite direction.

6. Dropping a penny from the Empire State Building will kill someone

Yes, it towers 381 metres high but a penny only weighs a gram and it tumbles as it falls. Its light weight combined with the tumbling effect produces so much air resistance that the penny never really gathers speed before it hits its terminal velocity and therefore definitely not enough to kill you.

7. Peanuts are a type of nut

Yes they have the word nut in their name, but peanuts, along with beans and peas, actually belong to the single plant family — Leguminosae.

8. Fortune cookies are a Chinese tradition

Love going to your local Chinese restaurant for the fortune cookie that comes with the bill at the end? This tradition was actually invented by the Americans.

9. Vikings wore horned helmets

They might be depicted in movies and books this way but experts say there is no actual evidence to suggest that Vikings ever wore horned helmets.

10. Chameleons change colour to match their surroundings

A chameleon is thought to change colour to fit in with its surroundings and people are often accused of being like a chameleon when they change their beliefs or behaviour to please others. But the real reason chameleons actually change colour as a response to mood, temperature and exposure to light. Not because of their surrounding objects.

11. One human year is equivalent to seven dog years

While it may be true for some dogs, it’s not a blanket rule. It all depends on the size and breed of the dog.

12. You lose body heat fastest through your head

You know when your mum tells you to put something on your head if you want to keep warm? Well apparently that’s just an old wives tale. Experts say you sould be just as cold if you went without a hat as if you went without trousers.

13. The forbidden fruit mentioned in the Book of Genesis is an apple

Absolutely not true. The bible never mentioned the forbidden fruit was an apple.

14. Vitamin C is an effective treatment for colds

You start to get sick and people tell you to eat an orange or buy some vitamin C tablets but apparently there is little or no evidence that vitamin C helps a cold. It is thought instead to help build up the immune system to ward off potential flu viruses.

15. Penguins mate for life

We all refer to penguins as upholders of the moral order as they remain entirely monogamous. But some species, such as the Emperor Penguin, are serial monogamists. They will mate with one penguins for a season then move onto another penguin the following year.

16. Caffeine dehydrates you

If you have a cup of coffee, make sure you follow it up with a large glass of water we’re told. However, while caffeinated drinks do have a mild diuretic effect — experts say they don’t appear to increase the risk of dehydration.

17. We use just 10 per cent of our brain

Neurologists say this is entirely untrue. Humans use nearly every part of their brain and most of the brain is active all the time.

18. Bulls charge at the colour red

It is a proven fact that bulls only see blues and yellow. The only reason they seem to be angered at red capes in bullfighting is because of its movement.

19. The capital of Australia is Sydney

We’re hoping every Australian already knows this but apparently this is one of the top misconceptions in the world. The capital, as we know, is Canberra.

ஒவ்வொரு ப்ரதோஷத்துக்கும் எங்கிருந்தாலும் பெரியவாளை தர்சனம் பண்ணி விடுவார் ப்ரதோஷம் மாமா. என்றைக்காவது அவர் வர சற்று தாமதமானாலோ, அல்லது
வரமுடியாமல் நிர்பந்தம் ஏற்பட்டாலோ, “ஏண்டா…ப்ரதோஷம் வந்துட்டானா?” என்று பெரியவாளே அன்போடு விஜாரிக்கும் அளவு பெரியவாளிடம் அவருக்கு அன்பு.

கடம் வித்வான் சுபாஷ் சந்தரன் மாமாவின் அத்யந்த பக்தர். ஒருநாள் வயலின் ரெட்டையர்கள் கணேஷ்,குமரேஷை மாமாவின் க்ருஹத்துக்கு அழைத்துக் கொண்டு வந்து கச்சேரி செய்ய வைத்தார் சுபாஷ் சந்தரன். மாமாவின் வீட்டில் எங்கு திரும்பினாலும் பெரியவா, பெரியவா, பெரியவாதான்!

கச்சேரி பண்ணிவிட்டு கிளம்பும்போது கணேஷ்,குமரேஷ் மாமாவிடம், “பெரியவா உருவம் பொறிச்ச காசு கெடைக்குமா மாமா?” என்று கேட்டனர். அப்போது அவரிடம்
கைவசம் காசு எதுவும் இல்லை. மாமாவுக்கு “இல்லை” என்று சொல்லிப் பழக்கமேயில்லை. எனவே “அடுத்த தடவை நீங்க ரெண்டு பேரும் வரச்சே கெடைக்கும்” என்று சொல்லிவிட்டார்.

இருந்தாலும் அவர்கள் கேட்டதை குடுக்க முடியவில்லையே என்ற உள்ளூர ரொம்ப வருந்தினார். கொஞ்சநாளில் அதை மறந்தே போய்விட்டார்.

ஒரு மாசம் கழித்து கணேஷ், குமரேஷ் இருவரும் பெரியவா முன் கச்சேரி செய்யும் பாக்யம் பெற்றார்கள். சுபாஷ் சந்திரன்தான் இதையும் ஏற்பாடு பண்ணியிருந்தார். கச்சேரி செய்தவர்களுக்கு சால்வை போர்த்தி கௌரவிப்பது மடத்தின் வழக்கம். எனவே அவர்களுக்கும் அழகான சால்வை மடத்து அதிகாரியால் போர்த்தப் பட்டது.

கூடவே இருவருக்கும் ஒரு சின்ன டப்பாவும் வழங்கப்பட்டது. திறந்து பார்த்தால்…….

பெரியவா திருவுருவம் பதித்த அழகான வெள்ளிக் காசுகள்!

“அடுத்த தடவை கெடைக்கும்” என்ற பக்தனின் வாக்கை பகவான் சத்யமாக்கினான்!

பக்தன் மேல் பகவானுக்கு எத்தனை ப்ரேமை! மாமாவிடம் இதை சொன்னபோது அவரால் பெரியவாளின் அன்பை எண்ணி எண்ணி நெகிழத்தான் முடிந்தது.

God loves the human form. Hence Avatars come in human form. You can experience His vision by following your duties (Karma marga), as declared in Bhagavad Gita. The Divine is being worshipped as a decorated idol or image, with an artificial form. You should experience the Lord in His natural form, in a natural manner. All the ornamentation a devotee resorts to does not please God. It may please the heart of other devotees, but God’s heart is not moved thereby. Only through love can God’s heart be moved and softened. Every devotee has that power. Instead of resorting to extravagant adulation of God or seeking petty favors from God, yearn for God alone and you will get everything. Endeavour to make God your intimate friend.

The Blind Street Vendor Who Founded a Million Dollar Company…An Inspiring story …

“I used to be badly bullied in school.”

“Whenever I used to go around asking for help, I was told, ‘You are blind. What good can you do?’

“The only way to run a successful business is to think with your heart in the equation.

“It will take time. A lot of time. Untold sacrifice and hard work.

“But if you are doing what your heart tells you to do, you will achieve what you set out to achieve.”

Visually impaired entrepreneur Bhavesh Bhatia tells us how he overcame criticism and rejection to set up Sunrise Candles, a start-up that provides employment to other visually impaired citizens like him.

Bhavesh Bhatia was not born blind, but had little vision while growing up.

Born with retina muscular deterioration, he always knew that his sight would only get worse with time.

At 23, his eyes finally decided to give up on him and no amount of preparation could have predicted the gloom that was to come.

He was working as a hotel manager and scrambling to save money for his mother’s treatment, who was suffering from cancer.

His desperation to save his mother stemmed from more than filial love.

She was the backbone of his existence, providing the support he so badly needed to navigate life with his disability.

Bhatia, now 45, recalls, “I used to be badly bullied in school. One day I came home and told her that I wouldn’t go back from the next day. Everyone ganged up to taunt me with chants of ‘Blind boy, blind boy.’

“Instead of forcing me, or worse giving in to my demands, she gently stroked my hair and told me that the boys were not cruel.

“They want to be my friend, but are thrown off by how different I am. She told me that bullying was their way of getting my attention.

“I had a hard time believing her but did as she told me to. The following day, instead of treating them with the hostility they deserved, I approached my bullies with an offer of friendship. We became friends for life.”

He continues, “It is this early life lesson that has been my guiding principle in business as well. My poverty and disability have created insurmountable challenges for me. But her wisdom has lead me to make the right decisions.”

So, when faced with losing his mother, losing his eyesight too was a devastating blow. He was fired from his job.

His father had already extinguished all their savings on his mother’s treatment.

Without a job, and no employment prospects to boot, they couldn’t afford to give her the care she needed. She passed away soon after.

“I was bereft without her,” says Bhatia.

“She was not very educated herself, but worked tirelessly to make sure that I was. I could not read the blackboard. She would pore over my lessons with me for hours — a practice she continued till my post-graduation.”

Bhavesh wanted to make something worthwhile of himself for her. That she would pass away when he was just getting started felt like the world’s greatest injustice.

Loss

Though the loss of his mother, his eyesight and his job wracked him with grief, he found solace in what Bhatia says is, ‘The best advice I’ve ever received,’ given, unsurprisingly, by his mother.

She told me ‘So what if you cannot see the world? Do something so that the world will see you.’

” Instead of wallowing in self-pity, Bhavesh set off in search of that elusive ‘something’ which would make the world see him.

That thing was not hard to find.

“Since childhood I was interested in creating things with my hands. I used to make kites, experiment with clay, shape toys and figurines, etc. I decided to dabble with candle making because it allowed me to harness my sense of shape and smell. But mostly because I am, and always have been, attracted towards light,” he says.

With no resources, except for a burning passion, he had little idea on how to get started.

“I took training from National Association for the Blind (Mumbai) in 1999. They taught me how to make plain candles,” he recounts.

“I wanted to play around with colours, scents and shapes, but dyes and scents were beyond my budget.”

So he would make candles all night long and sell them from a cart, standing at a corner of a local market in Mahabaleshwar (a popular hill station in Maharashtra).

“The cart belonged to a friend and he let me use it for Rs 50 a day. Every day I would set aside Rs 25 to buy my supplies for the next haul.”

It was a lonely and backbreaking mode of survival.

“But at least I was doing what I loved,” says Bhavesh, firmly repudiating any expressions of sympathy.

One day, out of the blue, things started looking up.

It began when a lady came by his cart to purchase candles.

He was struck by her gentle manner and lively laughter.

They struck up a friendship on the spot, conversing for hours.

“I would say it was love at first sight. But, sans the sight, the description doesn’t hold water. It was a more a connection between kindred souls.”

Her name was Neeta and Bhavesh became determined to marry her.

She felt the same way, returning to his cart every day to talk and reminisce about their life together.

Neeta faced backlash from her home for her decision to marry a penniless, blind candle-maker. But she was firm and the two soon embarked on a shared life, living in his small home in the beautiful hill station town.

Neeta was a relentless optimist. Since he could not afford to buy new containers, Bhavesh used to melt the wax in the same utensils that he cooked food in.

He worried that this would offend his wife. But she laughed his concerns off, procured a two wheeler so she could ferry her husband around town selling his candles and later, as their circumstances improved, even learnt how to drive a van so she could accommodate the larger quantities of candles that they were now dealing with.

“She is the light of my life,” smiles Bhavesh.

Struggles

That is not to say that his struggles became any easier once Neeta came into his life. But now that he had a comrade to share the burden with, the load did not seem quite as heavy.

“Sighted people were not ready to accept that a blind person could stand on his own feet. One time some miscreants pulled all my candles from the cart and threw it in the gutter.

“Whenever I used to go around asking for help, I was told to my face, ‘You are blind. What good can you do?’

“I tried to get guidance from professional candle manufacturers and other institutes. But no one helped me.”

While loan requests earned him outright rejections, even simple non-monetary requests were met with hostile reactions.

He wanted advice from experts on candle manufacturing, but received derision and scorn.

“So I would go with my wife to malls and tried to touch and feel the different varieties of the overpriced candles displayed there,” recalls Bhavesh.

Based on what his senses could accrue, and basing the rest on his talents of hustling and creativity, he tried for a greater variety in his creations.

The turning point came when he was granted a loan of Rs 15,000 from Satara Bank, where NAB had a special scheme for blind people.

“With this, we purchased 15 kilos of wax, two dyes and a hand cart for Rs 50,” says Bhavesh on what would go on to become a multi-crore business, with prestigious corporate clients from all over the country and the world and a dedicated team of 200 employees — all of whom are visually impaired.

Bhavesh says, “When I look back, I realise the reason so many people turned me away when I asked for a loan was because the way the world does business is ruthless. Everyone thinks with their mind and not their heart.

“I have come to realise that the only way to run a successful business is to think with your heart in the equation. It will take time. A lot of time. Untold sacrifice and hard work. But if you are doing what your heart tells you to do, you will achieve what you set out to achieve.”

Once upon a time Bhavesh, used to painstakingly set aside Rs 25 a day to purchase wax for the following day’s candle stock.

Today Sunrise Candles uses 25 tonnes of wax a day to manufacture their 9,000 designs of plain, scented and aromatherapy candles.

They purchase their wax from the UK. Their client list includes Reliance Industries, Ranbaxy, Big Bazaar, Naroda Industries and the Rotary Club.

On his decision to employ the visually challenged to run Sunrise Candles, Bhavesh says, “We train blind people so that they can understand the work and not just help us at our unit, but some day go back home to set up their own business.”

While he likes to concentrate on the creative aspects of the firm, Neeta takes care of the administrative duties of the enterprise.

She also imparts vocational training to blind girls, aiding them to become self-sufficient.

The sportsman

One would think that building a multi-crore business from scratch, especially given the challenges Bhavesh has had to overcome, would consume all of his time. But he is a gifted sportsman and manages to devote enough time to hone his abilities professionally.

Bhavesh says, “I was active in sports from my childhood. Contrary to stereotypical cliches, blindness does not mean inherent physical weakness. I take pride in my athleticism.”

He had to become disconnected from sports for a long time while building Sunrise Candles, but now that his business is in full bloom, he is rigorous about his daily training.

“After getting settled in the candle business, I once again started my sports practice (he specialises in the short put, discus and javelin throw).

“I have 109 medals (in paralympic sports events). I do 500 push ups, run eight kilometres every day and use the gym that I have installed at our factory.

“To practise running, my wife takes a 15 feet nylon rope and ties one end to our van. She gives me the other end and drives the van at my speed while I run alongside it.”

“But,” he smiles, “I have to be scared of her. If I talk in a loud voice with her, the speed of the van increases the next day.”

Dreams, goals and the future

Currently, Bhavesh is training to participate in the 2016 Paralympics, to be held at Brazil.

He is also set on conquering another world record.

“Germany holds the record for the tallest candle in the world, standing at 21 meters. My plan is make a taller one. Last April we started on a new skill — that of creating life style wax statues of Shri Narendra Modiji, Shri Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar and 25 other well-known eminent personalities.”

Having achieved all that he set out to, Bhavesh says he is far from satisfied.

“I have so many dreams, so many more goals. I want to become the first blind person in the world to climb Mount Everest.

“I want to win a gold medal for my country in the 2016 Paralympics in Brazil. But, above all, I want to ensure that each and every blind Indian is standing on their own feet.”
