“அய்யர் பொட்டலக் கடை…”

உத்திரமேரூரில் அய்யர் பொட்டலக் கடை என்ற பெயரில் இனிப்பு, கார பட்சணங்கள் விற்பனை செய்யும் சின்னஞ்சிறு கடைக்கு, கடல் கடந்தும் ரசிகர்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்றால் நம்ப முடிகிறதா?

காலத்தின் புழுதி படிந்து காட்சியளிக்கிறது கடை.

கடையில் காலையிலேயே கூட்டம் களைகட்டி விடுகிறது. காலை 11 மணிக்குள் மிக்சர், பூண்டு சேவு முதலிய அயிட்டங்கள் விற்றுத் தீர்ந்துவிடுகின்றன. மாலை 4.30 மணிக்குள் மொத்த சரக்கும் காலியாகி கடை பூட்டப்பட்டுவிடுகிறது.

“இன்னிக்கு இவ்வளவுதான்னு பகவான் படியளந்திருக்கான். இது போதும் எனக்கு” என்று கூறும் கடை உரிமையாளர் தன் பெயரைச் சொல்ல மறுக்கிறார்.

“என் பேரு எதுக்கு? பெயரில்லை ஸ்வாமி எனக்கு. பொட்டலக் கடை அய்யர்தான் என் பேரு, இந்த வட்டாரத்துல யாரக் கேட்டாலும் சொல்லுவாங்களே. என் அப்பா பேரும் இதுதான், தாத்தா பேரும் இதுதான். 60 வருஷமா அய்யர் பொட்டலக் கடை என்கிற பேர்ல கடை நடத்திக்கிட்டுவர்றோம்.”

சுவையும் தரமும் தனித்தன்மையும் மிகுந்த இவர் கடையின் இனிப்பு, கார வகைகளுக்கு கலெக்டர், நீதிபதிகள், டாக்டர்கள், தொழிலதிபர்கள், பெரிய பெரிய சங்கீத வித்வான்கள், கலைஞர்கள் எல்லாம் வாடிக்கையாளராக இருப்பது இது வெறும் கடை மட்டுமல்ல, கிராமியக் கலாச்சாரத்தின் ஓர் அங்கம் என்பதையே உணர்த்துகிறது.

“எங்க கடையில பட்சணம் வாங்கிச் சாப்பிடுற குழந்தைக்கு எந்த விதமான வயிற்றுக் கோளாறும் வரக் கூடாது. கலப்படம் கிடையாது, தரம்தான் எங்க கடையின் ‘தாரக மந்திரம்’. ஆனாலும், அந்தக் காலத்து பட்சணத்தின் தினுசே வேற சார். இப்போ இருக்க விலைவாசியில தரத்தைக் காப்பாத்த படாதபாடு படவேண்டியிருக்கு” எனும் பொட்டலக் கடை அய்யருக்கு தற்போது 80 வயதாகிறது. தாடியும் மீசையுமாக ஒரு யோகிபோலக் காட்சிதருகிறார்.

“அந்தக் காலத்தில் பட்சணம் செஞ்சபோது ஒரு மூட்டை கடலைப் பருப்பு (அதாவது 64 படி) விலை ரூபாய் 56, ஒரு டின் கடலை எண்ணெய் (16 கிலோ) ரூபாய் 18, ஒரு வீசை பட்டாணி 13 அணா, ஒரு வீசை மந்தாரை இலை பத்தணா, ஒரு வீசை சக்கரை (1,400 கிராம்) 13 அணா” பழைய விலைவாசியை நினைவிலிருந்து சொல்லிக்கொண்டே போகிறார்.

பட்சணக் கடையின் உட்புறமுள்ள வீட்டுக்குள் அழைத்துக் காண்பித்தார். நீண்ட முற்றத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியைத் தடுத்து, அதிலே நட்டுவைத்திருக்கும் ருத்திராட்ச மரங்களைக் காண்பித்தார். 150 அடி வரை வளரக்கூடிய இம்மரங்களைத் தரிசிப்பது 100 கோயில்களை தரிசிப்பதற்கு இணையாகும் என்று சொல்லிப் பெருமைப்படுகிறார்.

வீடெங்கும் பட்சணத் தயாரிப்பின் நறுமணத்தோடு பக்தி மணமும் கமழ்கிறது. கூடம் ஏறக்குறைய ஒரு தியான மண்டபம்போல் இருக்கிறது. நூற்றுக் கணக்கான சாமி படங்கள், சிலைகள். எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் மாலைகள்.

பேச்சின் நடுவே டபரா டம்ளர்களில் காப்பி வந்தது. பிரமாதமான காப்பி. “எங்களுக்குப் பேராசை கிடையாது, ஸ்வாமி இவ்வளவு குடுத்திருக்கார் பேரப்பிள்ளைகளோடு சந்தோஷமாக, திருப்தியாக இருக்கோம், இது போதும்”

-தூணில் சாய்ந்துகொண்டு மூக்குத்தி மினுங்க மாமி சொன்னார்.

அந்தத் திருப்தியையும் சந்தோஷத்தையும்தான் அந்தத் தம்பதியர் தங்கள் வாடிக்கையாளர்களுக்குப் பொட்டலமாகக் கட்டிக் கொடுக்கிறார்கள் என்பதில் சந்தேகமேயில்லை.

Today’s infographic shares 41 success icons who achieved success in varying ages ” from as young as five years old (Mozart, when he became competent in keyboard and violin) to as old as 76 years old (Nelson Mandela, when he became president). Some notable examples include:
  • Anne Frank, who was 12 when she started writing her diary during the Nazi occupation. It would later be published as The Diary of a Young Girl and be published in more than 60 languages. Anne Frank died when she was 15, of typhus.
  • Pele, who was 17 when he won the world cup in 1958 with Brazil; he also became the youngest ever to play in World Cup). In total Pel scored 1281 goals in 1363 games, for which he was listed in the Guinness World Records for most career goals scored in football.
  • Roger Bannister, who is famous in the self-help world for being the athlete who broke the four-minute limit for running a mile in 1954. He was 25 then. Up until that time, running a mile in under four minutes was perceived by doctors and scientists as a biological impossibility and would cause serious physical damage to the body if attempted. After his feat, this four-minute barrier has since been broken by many athletes, including high school students.

Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) can see as many as 16 sunrises and sunsets in a 24-hour period.

But on some occasions, the location of the station means the sun never sets at all, providing stunning views for the crew on board.

Now, Nasa astronaut Reid Wiseman has revealed this incredible sight from orbit, in the first ever Vine video to be sent from space.

The timelapse condenses a 92-minute orbit into the span of around six seconds showing the space station hurtling around the planet at  17,500 mph (27,600 km/h).

WHAT CAUSES A NEVER-SETTING SUN?

In certain orbits of the Earth, the sun never sets on the ISS because the space station is in alignment with the day/night terminator line.

This line marks the barrier between light and dark on the surface of the Earth.

In this scenario, something known as the ‘beta angle’ increases. This is the imaginary line between the sun and the path of the ISS around Earth.

When beta angle exceeds 69º, it is in constant sunlight. This happens two to four times a year and is most extreme near the summer solstice on June 21.

The timelapse condenses a 92-minute orbit into the span of around six seconds showing the space station hurtling around the planet at  17,500 mph (27,600 km/h).

Previous space shuttles would enter something known as a ‘barbeque mode’ which would cause them to do slow barrel rolls to avoid overheating.

On the ISS, an Active Thermal Control System transfers heat through to large radiators extending under the station that can then be released into space.

‘1st Vine from space! Single Earth orbit. Sun never sets flying parallel w/terminator line,’ Wiseman explained in the clip, which he shared over the weekend.

Vine is a mobile service that creates short looping videos which are six seconds or less. So far, Wiseman’s Vine has gained over 4,000 likes and nearly 2,000 retweets.

The 38-year-old from Baltimore is currently serving as flight engineer aboard the International Space Station for Expedition 41.

The last time Twitter saw a space ‘first’ was when astronaut Mike Massimino sent the first tweet from orbit in 2009.

Message For The Day…” Pursue Spirituality with no Expectations in Mind… “

You should not pursue spirituality with any end result in mind. One who works for wages is a worker and not an owner. The daily wage earner will not have any ownership or interest towards completing the tasks. He or she will worry about being present till the schedule, collect their wages and leave. Thus, he or she thinks that they are separate from the organisation. In your home, the wife or the children do their respective duties, but do not demand any wages. The wife does not ask any sort of income for the activities she does. She discharges her responsibility with purity and perfection, and takes care of everything at home. One who prays, just for a result is like that daily wage earner. One who enjoys the feeling that God is his own, and that God is within them, is like the owner. Aspire to become owners and not servants.

To help celebrate World Oceans Day, Ryong Lee of Canada posted this beautiful photo onEarthSky’s Facebook page. When we started talking about World Oceans Day on our social media pages last week, several people said they had never heard of it. In fact, Canada made the original proposal for World Oceans Day in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The day has been unofficially celebrated every June 8 since then, and, in 2008, the United Nations did officially recognize it. Since then, World Oceans Day has been coordinated internationally by The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network. These organizations say it has greater success and global participation each year.

Sylvia Earle, perhaps the world’s most recognized and respected oceanographer, made a video plea to protect the oceans, which was released today. Among other things, Earle said:

‘உங்களை இங்கு ஒருவருக்கும் தெரியாது. நீங்கள் பேசும்போது, யாரோ என்று வங்காளிகள் அசிரத்தையாக, இருந்துவிட்டால், உங்கள் தமிழை கவனித்துக் கேட்க முடியாது. நான் மதித்து மாலை போடக்கூடிய ஆள் என்று தெரிந்துவிட்டால், எல்லாரும் கவனமாகத் கேட்பர். அதற்காகத்தான்…’ என்று கூறினார். ராஜாஜியின் பெருந்தன்மையை நினைத்து உருகிப் போனேன்.

The Central Intelligence Agency is announcing today that it’s getting into the social media biz. “@CIA” will be its handle on Twitter, the short-attention-span platform with255 million monthly active users, and it’ll also launch on Facebook.

The presence on these premier social media sites will supplement the CIA’s existing digital presence, which includes a Web site and Flickr and YouTube accounts. CIA Director John Brennan explained the move in a press release: “By expanding to these platforms, CIA will be able to more directly engage with the public and provide information on CIA’s mission, history, and other developments. We have important insights to share, and we want to make sure that unclassified information about the Agency is more accessible to the American public that we serve, consistent with our national security mission.”

Don’t get too excited, however, about the level of detail in the tweets and Facebook posts. Though a press release on the new accounts says that the agency will post the “latest news, statements, and career information,” consider the order that came down from the director of national intelligence earlier this year. It stipulated a requirement that intelligence employees seek authorization before talking to the media about a broad basket of “intelligence-related information.”

Given such constraints, it’s a safe bet that the published information will go heavy on promotional fare. The press release notes that tweets will showcase “artifacts and other information from the CIA’s Museum — the best museum most people never get to see. CIA will also post updates and information from the Agency’s ‘World Factbook,’ a unique public resource and educational tool, as well as unclassified intelligence histories and other information.”

Hold on a second, though: How did the CIA get control of the @CIA handle? A department spokesperson responds, “CIA filed an impersonation complaint with Twitter and they secured the @CIA account for us, which is routine for government agencies.”

Unless you live by an airport and try all day/night it’s a really tough shot to get! Story behind it was that I was just taking my ‘daily moon’ shot and my shutter froze. I took the lens off cleaned the sensors and snapped it back on. Aimed at the moon and started to focus when I saw the jet enter the frame and then, I mean, I needed split-second reaction to focus and get about 5 shots as it flew through in about 2 seconds start to finish. Got lucky with the timing.

LYING in international waters off the coast of England sits a tiny fort that claims to be the world’s smallest country.

Located 10 kilometres from the Suffolk Coast in southeast England, the Principality of Sealand declared its independence from Britain in 1967. Home to just 22 residents, it has its own royal family, currency, stamps and even a football team — the Sealand All Stars.

More like an oil rig to look at, Sealand occupies a fort left over from World War II, and is basically two concrete towers connected by an iron platform.

The story goes that British Major Paddy Roy Bates took over the site from pirate broadcasters with the intent to start his own radio station called Radio Essex.

Following his occupation, he attempted to establish Sealand as a nation-state in 1975 writing a national constitution and establishing other national symbols.

Despite it not being recognised as a state, the Bates family manage it as though it is a recognised sovereign entity and have given themselves royal titles. Prince Roy and his wife Princess Joan (now deceased) named their son His Royal Highness Prince Michael who serves as Sealand’s acting Head of State.

Tourists can help bolster the local economy by purchasing souvenirs from the online shop as well as royal titles. For $360 you can buy the title of Count or Countess of Sealand or become a lord or lady for $52. You can even buy one square foot of the fort for just $32.

In October 2012, Roy Bates died at the age of 91, and the Sealand crown passed to his son, Michael, 63, who is still said to live on Sealand with his family and friends.
