Message for the Day…”The distance from Him to you is as much as the distance from you to Him. He is everywhere. He always is in your heart. Recognise Him there; realise Him as the closest and nearest to you. He is your own Self, neither terrible nor tender, but, simply is.”

God is described in the scriptural texts as, Raso vai sah – “He is the sweet essence.” How can sweetness ever become bitter? Godhead is a spotlessly clean mirror; you see in it your own reflection. When you have terror-striking propensities, the reflection you see will strike terror in you. When you have soft and harmless propensities, the reflection will be tender and soft. Do not lay the blame on God, as you are often prone to doing! When everything goes right, you say that God has come close to you; when something goes wrong, you say that God has deserted you and gone afar! He does not move far or near. The distance from Him to you is as much as the distance from you to Him. He is everywhere. He always is in your heart. Recognise Him there; realise Him as the closest and nearest to you. He is your own Self, neither terrible nor tender, but, simply is.

Message for Day…Teachers Day …”There is a perennial bond of pure love between teachers and students. Students can win over any teacher’s heart, and a teacher can win over students’ hearts as well.”

Source: http://media.radiosai.org

There is a perennial bond of pure love between teachers and students. Students can win over any teacher’s heart, and a teacher can win over students’ hearts as well. To be loved, you must love others first. The basis of Indian culture is, “Speak truth, practice right conduct.” Be humble. You may not always oblige, but you can always speak obligingly! At times, teachers may need to be strict. Be so. Remember, God can be harder than a diamond when the situation demands. Otherwise, He is softer than butter. Teachers very well understand this Divine nature and must exemplify it in their behaviour too. To take students into their confidence, teachers must approach them with love and fearlessly point out their mistakes and lead them on the right path. Only then students will follow the righteous path and correct their mistakes. For the progress and prosperity of the nation, every teacher must love their students and mould their character.

Message for the Day..Onam ..”It is not enough to celebrate the Onam festival with religious fervour and devotion. You have to live up to these expectations of the noble emperor Bali.”

Source: http://media.radiosai.org

The people of Kerala follow the commands of the noble Emperor Bali even today. That is why the state has developed in several ways. There is no dearth of food and amenities for a happy living in Kerala. Of course, changes in people’s aspirations and lifestyle are taking place in recent times due to the impact of the Kali Yuga (the present era). But the core of their hearts and feelings remains the same. They still follow the vedic injunctions “Speak truth and follow righteousness (Sathyam vada, dharmam chara).” They respect elders and serve them with love and affection. What could be the reason for this? Love for God! It is a land where love for God exists even today. Those who have love for God naturally develop fear of sin. Consequently, such people will have a high degree of morality in society, which is very important for its orderly functioning. It is not enough to celebrate the Onam festival with religious fervour and devotion. You have to live up to these expectations of the noble emperor Bali.

…Message for the Day…”God will tolerate anything but never tolerate anger and ego.Ego also breeds several other evil qualities!….”

Source:http://media.radiosai.org

Emperor Bali was no doubt a great devotee with humility. However, there was an element of ego in him. God will tolerate anything but never tolerate anger and ego. God does not appreciate these qualities. What is this ego? What for is this ego? Is it for physical beauty or strength of the senses or intellectual acumen or wealth? None of these is permanent. Ego also breeds several other evil qualities! God has gifted every human being with sacred and noble qualities such as Truth (Satya), Righteousness (Dharma), Peace (Shanti), Love (Prema) and Non-violence (Ahimsa). Develop these qualities. These are the five vital airs (pancha-pranas) for a human being. Anger, jealousy, hatred, etc., are evil qualities befitting an animal. How can a person with such animal qualities be called a human being? A human being is one who has good qualities. Follow truth. Truth is God. Cultivate love. Love is God. Live in love.

Joke of the day…” I Can remember….” !!!

After checking an elderly couple out, the doctor tells them that they were physically okay but might want to start writing things down and make notes to help them remember things, as their memory is getting worse. The couple thanked the doctor and left.

A few days later,  while watching TV, the old man got up from his chair and his wife asks, “Where are you going?”
He replies, “To the kitchen.”
She asks, “Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?”
He replies, “Sure.”
She then asks him, “Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember it?”
He says, “No, I can remember that.”
She then says, “Well, I also would like some strawberries on top. You had better write that down cause I know you’ll forget that.”
He says, “I can remember that, you want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.”
She replies, “Well, I also would like whip cream on top. I know you will forget that so you better write it down.”
With irritation in his voice, he says, “I don’t need to write that down, I can remember that.” He then fumes into the kitchen.
After about 20 minutes he returns from the kitchen and hands her a plate of bacon and eggs.
“You see?!?” his wife yells at him in rage, “You forgot the onions!“

Legends of Onam: Let us all welcome Maveli, the righteous king!…

Onam is one the most anticipated festivals celebrated with much fanfare and merriment by the people in Kerala, irrespective of one’s caste or creed.

Usually coinciding with crop harvests in the region, the story behind how the festival came into being goes all the way back to Vedic and Puranic ages.

The mythical King Mahabali, considered to be one of the greatest kings to have ever ruled Kerala, is believed to ascend to Earth from the netherworld to meet his subjects once every year.

It is his homecoming that is celebrated as the festival of Onam, as we know it today.

The king remains quite popular in Kerala even to this day, as testified by the folk song, Maaveli Naadu Vannidum Kaalam (When Maveli, our King, ruled the land), that speaks of his reign being one where all were equal.

According to the traditional legend, the king’s growing popularity amidst the common people became a rising concern for the jealous gods, Indra in particular.

According to Hindu beliefs, when a king or an emperor has a considerable number of fair and just deeds to his credit, he has the power to dethrone even Indra, who is the god of the gods.

Threatened by Mahabali’s rising greatness, they decided to hatch a scheme against the king and rope in the supreme god Vishnu.

Taking the form of a poor Brahmin monk named Vamana, Vishnu approached the king and asked to be granted a boon. Mahabali, who was known for his altruistic qualities, readily agreed to the monk’s request.

Vamana wished for a parcel of land that he could cover in three paces or steps. Amused by such a trivial request, the king granted his wish. However, the ‘simple’ monk soon transformed into a giant – and covered all of the king’s lands in just two steps.

Where to put the third step? The king could not go back on his word. Having nothing left that he could pledge, Mahabali offered his head to the monk as the third step. Vamana’s final step pushed the king to the netherworld, thus robbing him of his earthly commitments and his throne to heaven.

Vishnu offered the king a chance to visit his kingdom once every year, for his attachment to his subjects was well known even amidst the gods.

And thus, the festival of Onam came into being, marking the homecoming of the noble king, who is lovingly called Maaveli by his people.

Different rituals are practised even today that celebrate the reign of the king, which is considered to be a golden era in the history of Kerala.

Interestingly, despite the role that Vamana had in the banishment of Mahabali, he is not written off as a villainous character in the state.

In fact, one of the major instalments of the festivities includes statues of both figures. These are circulated in homes of people as a representation of the king’s visit as well as the god’s.

While the statue of Mahabali is known as Onathappan, Vamana’s form goes by the name of Thrikkarayappan, the lord of the land covered in three paces. And both make way into the floral arrangement of Pookalam on Pooradam, the eighth day of Onam.

And as the month of Chingam falls by year after year, the people of Kerala continue to await the visit of their beloved king and seek his blessings.

Message for the Day…”Wherever you see in this world today, there are only ‘pieces’, not ‘peace’. Peace is very much in your inner self. Hence search for it by means of an inward journey. That is your duty.”

Source: http://media.radiosai.org/

People repose their faith in such a frail and impermanent physical body. This body is like a puppet with nine holes in it, and it may collapse at any time with a mere sneeze. Reposing their faith in such a perishable body, people forget the invaluable ornaments stored in it. That is the reason why you suffer mental agitation. You go to a millionaire and enquire, “Sir! You have everything in this world; but do you have peace?” He will immediately reply, “I have everything but not peace.” Wherever you see in this world today, there are only ‘pieces’, not ‘peace’. Peace is very much in your inner self. Hence search for it by means of an inward journey. That is your duty. Unfortunately you forget this sacred duty and desire for paltry and mean things. When you are able to manifest your own innate noble qualities, you can experience true and eternal peace.
