Airports With Catchy Interiors !!!

MASSIVE, beautiful, weird, wonderful, futuristic and fun.

Here are some of the world’s best – and the downright craziest – airport interiors, according to travel website Skyscanner.com.au .

1. Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok, Thailand

Ancient meets modern minimalism in the main concourse of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, designed by Helmut Jahn. Suvarnabhumi – “the airport of smiles” – has the proud claim to fame of the world’s tallest freestanding control tower (123 metres if you were wondering).

2. Beijing Capital International, China

Beijing’s Terminal 3, built in time to cope with the extra millions of passengers coming for the 2008 Olympic Games, is the second largest airport terminal in the world after Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3 (more of that later).

3. Chicago O’Hare, US

Moving walkways are cool, but colourful moving walkways, like this one in Chicago, are cooler. Along with going on the monorail back and forth between terminals, jumping off the end of “travelators”, as they’re sometimes called, is one of the most fun ways to spend your time at an airport.

4. Singapore Changi

The departure lounge at Singapore’s Changi airport looks like it was modelled on an imaginary retro-futuristic fast food outlet. Or Universal Studios. Or maybe a flying saucer landed on the first floor food court? Check out the matching floor and ceiling too.

5. Dubai International, UAE

Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport is, you guessed it, the single largest building in the world by floor space. It’s Dubai, what do you expect, small and subtle?

6. Lyon St. Exupery, France

If you arrive at Lyon’s St. Exupéry Airport by TGV or the Rhône Express from the city centre, it’s a long walk to check-in, especially if you’re laden down with bags and you’re leaving from Terminal 3. But do look up to appreciate the architecture

7. Madrid – Barajas, Spain

If you can get over the sensation that you are under attack from a swarm of alien jellyfish, and that you have landed in Madrid in 1968, appreciate the wonder of the arrival hall at Barajas, which looks like an unused set from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

8. Munich, Germany

Horizontalators don’t come much more D.I.S.C.O. than this example at Munich Airport. They really should pump out Stayin’ Alive. You’ll catch Saturday night fever even if it’s Monday morning.

9. Charles de Gaulle, Paris

If, like the author, you missed your flight home from Paris because you were toasting your engagement with a bottle of champers on a bench outside Charles de Gaulle, then spent five hours drinking gin, slumped staring at the ceiling, this view will be familiar.

10. Shanghai Pudong, China

Asia boasts some of the world’s most architecturally-exciting airports, and Shanghai Pudong International is no exception. The exterior of Terminal 1 is shaped like waves, while arrival by escalator feels like an ascent into a sci-fi flick version of heaven

11. Ronald Reagan Washington National, US

There’s no mistaking which country you’re in, however jet-lagged you’re feeling. The Reagan’s classical style, redolent of tearful goodbyes in a 1920s railway station, eschewts the futurism of most major international airports.

Message For the Day…” Realise Brotherhood Of Man & Fatherhood of God ” …

What is true humanness? You should treat your fellowmen as your own brothers and sisters. You deserve to be called a human being only when you cultivate the spirit of unity. Where there is no unity, there you find enmity and hatred. Consequently, the principle of love is lost altogether. Your foremost duty is to share your love with others. Only then can you realise the dictum: ‘Brotherhood of man and fatherhood of God’. You may or may not believe in the fatherhood of God, but you must have faith in the brotherhood of man; practise it and experience bliss therefrom. It is only when we share our love with our fellowmen, can we experience Divinity.

Meet Sengai Podhuvan…”78 year old Poster Boy of Tamil Wikipedia ” !!!

As he lifts his left hand to type in front of his home PC, his fingers don’t keep pace with his mind.

Sengai Podhuvan, one of the oldest contributors of Tamil Wikipedia, has authored over 2,600 articles. His wife Sengai Selvi helps him with his work. Photo: Karthik Subramanian

“Look at that. The finger is trembling and refusing to listen to me,” Sengai Podhuvan, dressed in a blue T-shirt that sports logos of Tamil Wikipedia and a saffron dhoti, says. “Now I just have to wait for my hand to stabilise and type one letter at a time. It takes a while but I am used to it.”

The 78-year-old is an unlikely poster boy of the Tamil computing fraternity. Having authored over 2,600 articles in Tamil Wikipedia, Mr. Podhuvan is well known within the closed group of Tamil Wikipedia editors as the man who translated ‘Tolkappiyam,’ one of the oldest surviving Tamil works, into English for WikiSource.

He has also developed a new standard for transliteration of Tamil to English, using just the Roman alphabets available on regular keyboards. “I have avoided the use of diacritical marks and capitalisation. Instead, I have constructed the sounds of Tamil on a new standard that will allow any user to grasp the nuances of Tamil pronunciation,” he says.

Mr. Podhuvan, who types for five hours every day, has achieved all of these things despite having a degenerative neurological disorder. “It is most probably Parkinson’s and it is genetic. My mother had it and her mother before her,” he says.

He has refused medication because he feels that ultimately, it won’t matter, much to the chagrin of his wife, 71-year-old Sengai Selvi, his five children and his family doctor. Selvi supports Mr. Podhuvan through all of his chores at their home in Nanganallur, where the elderly couple live by themselves. Their four daughters are all married and live in different parts, while their son is in Canada.

Early affinity

Sengai Podhuvan’s love for Tamil started early. “I had studied only up to class VIII, but became a teacher when I learnt the government allowed those with at least three years of teaching experience to appear for SSLC exams,” he says, recalling the events of the early 1960s when he was in his 20s.

He continued in the teaching profession, earning subsequent degrees leading up to a PhD from Tiruchi Bharathidasan University, which he received just after retiring in 1994. His big break into the world of Tamil literature, however, started in 1971, when veteran Tamil scholar Dr. Mu. Va (Mu. Varadarajan) offered him a job as the editor of scholarly works for a project to record the ‘Authentic History of Tamilnadu’.

Mr. Podhuvan has also been the editor of sports journal ‘Tamizhar Vilayatu Madal’ brought out by the directorate of sports development during the Chief Ministership of M.G. Ramachandran.

His tryst with computers began in 2005, when he acquired his first PC and trained himself to be able to publish his own books. He has already published six books. “My ambition is to translate Sangam literature works — ‘Pathu Paatu’ and ‘Ettu Thogai’ — for Tamil Wikipedia,” he says.

Message For The Day…Love is God and God is Love …

Consider love as your life and truth as your breath. There is an intimate and inseparable relationship between love and truth. Today people use the word love without actually knowing its meaning. As they do not know the value and meaning of love, it is trivialized. People are under the mistaken notion that worldly and physical attachment is love and consider such love as large as life. True love will reign supreme only when you get rid of selfishness and develop the spirit of sacrifice. Love is God, God is love. But you are craving for worldly love which is bereft of life. You should aspire for Divine Love which is truly your very life. True spiritual discipline lies in connecting your love with Divine Love. Your life will be sanctified when you have such steady and selfless Divine Love.

What is Happening to My Newspapers !!!

The morning paper with coffee is a perfect start of the day for many of us and over a century (nearly getting to two centuries), our favourite papers have been evolving all through, trying to please us readers. I’m proud I’m reading the same paper, The Hindu, my grandfather and my father read. I have never swerved in my loyalty when we moved for a few years to Mumbai, my husband and I felt so forlorn that he would go to a special paper dealer and get the previous day’s issue of The Hindu. Perhaps, our paper had not spread its wings as much as it has done today.

When people tell me to read news online, I’m still resisting. Can anything replace the comfort of holding the paper and even smelling the fresh scent of the ink and reaching out for it the whole day whenever I’m free to play Sudoku and Crossword? Though we can play these on the Net too, it is never a match for the pleasure of pencil marks I make on the side of the puzzle to guess a correct number or an anagram or two.

In Mumbai, The Times of India also grew familiar to our family as it was important for local events as well. We would stand on the pavement near the paper’s printing press near the Victoria station, now Chhatrapati Shivaji, to get the heady scent that emanates in the surroundings. Have you experienced it? Where is this scent when reading news from the computer?

With the coffee cup in hand, we were able to read the headlines even on a folded paper. Now, this pleasure is denied as the top sheet has a huge advertisement which may not mean anything to us and to turn the paper without spilling coffee, we have to learn juggling!

Really sad to say that the comfort of reading while holding the paper spread out in two hands, especially when you want to shut out your surroundings (I’m sure many men will agree with me!) is slowly being denied to us. Why? The top sheet is cut in half, lengthwise, and it flaps and slips when you try to turn the sheets or fold them, to get the item closer for the ease of reading. It makes us feel clumsy. The latest discomfort is caused by an extra two-inch length of paper jutting out at the edge, making it more difficult to turn the page. By the way, am I the only one complaining?

Another feature, of sticking some free gift on the paper — like a shampoo or a real estate booklet or any other goodies — makes the paper lose balance and get sticky when this ‘gift’ is removed. Of course, I can’t even mention the ad pamphlets which slip out irritatingly. My brother found a use for them as rough paper for market lists and phone messages when one side is blank.

However, all is not negative and all is not lost. Let me not keep whining.

The features suitable children and teens are commendable. As seniors we can learn a lot and also brush up some of our forgotten knowledge. But I am yet to see a feature just for seniors, but what exactly can go into it? We already have health, fitness, politics, history and what-not, covered in detail.

Newspapers are doing a great service to the country by promoting education to the downtrodden, to the unlettered of all age groups and to special needs groups. They are waking us up from stupor and complacency and making us aware of our responsibilities in personal and social lives. Newspapers are the first stop for information and for general knowledge of current affairs. They are not dramatic and distracting like TV news channels.

I am praying for a long life to our newspapers so that my grandchildren can read them too.

Just one request. Do make my paper comfortable to hold while reading. Please!
