Google‘s Internet balloons, part of an ambitious experiment called Project Loon to bring web connectivity to remote areas, have cumulatively traveled 3 million kilometers since 2013, the company said Thursday.

Since announcing the project last July, the search giant‘s experimental wing, Google X, has refined the manufacturing process so balloons last 10 times longer—so far, a record of 130 days—in the stratosphere compared with balloons from last year. Furthermore, with automated processes, Google can now launch up to 20 balloons a day. The company is also using computer trajectory simulations to maneuver balloons accurately to their targets.

Google’s made big progress on Project Loon, but it’s not the only company aiming to blanket the world with Internet access. Facebook is also building an army of drones, airplanes, and satellites to bring the web to remote areas lacking Internet infrastructure.

For now, though, take a moment and think about what it means to travel 3 million kilometers:

“That distance would take you around the earth 75 times, or get you to the moon and back nearly 4 times over,” according to Google.

It’s about to get a lot more enjoyable to wait for a flight at Newark Liberty International Airport’sUnited Terminal.An ambitious new $120 million makeover plan of Terminal C by airport amenity manager OTG includes 55 new restaurants headed by celebrated chefs (see the list here), new retail spaces, and visual upgrades galore.

As part of the plan, OTG will be installing 6,000 new iPads so passengers can order from the fancy new menus.When passengers sit down at one the iPads, they scan their boarding pass or enter their United MileagePlus account number. The screen then shows updated flight information, which is always visible, even when the screen shifts to the food menus of the new restaurants.

Shopping is also possible from the iPads, and passengers can order travel amenities like ear buds or a neck pillow. Orders are expected to arrive at your seat in 15 minutes, and passengers can pay for both food and other items with either credit card or their MileagePlus award points.

For the tech obsessed, there will also be power outlets at every seat and over 10,000 in total.

Master architect David Rockwell’s Rockwell Group, which has designed everything from the Academy Awards to restaurants, was behind over half of the spaces in the new terminal. According to Fast Company, this includes the “beer garden” with an intricate metal roof and an Italian-style cafe area with huge columns.

The first new restaurants will be open for business in summer of 2015, with the whole project completed in 2016.

“We didn’t really believe them when they said they wanted this,” Rockwell told Fast Company. “We did something that was kind of out there and they said ‘Well, we’d really like it to be incredible.’ That’s when I realized this is really about pushing the boundary of these airport spaces and making them [about] communalfood and art.”Renovations for the new restaurants have already started and existing restaurants will continue to close gradually so the spaces can be updated. The first new restaurants will be open for business in summer of 2015, with the whole project completed in 2016.

San Alfonso del Mar Pool with its length of 1 km and a coverage of almost 20 acres is registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest swimming pool. This amazing swimming pool seems to cover the same amount of water as 6000 regular swimming pools and visitors can enjoy in many different activities besides swimming, such as sailing, kayaking, scuba diving and paragliding.

This great man-made lagoon is part of the San Alfonso del Mar resort, located in the city Algarrobo, Chile. It was opened in 2006 and since then attracts an increasing number of tourists. This pool was made by collecting and filtering water from the ocean, while the sun warms it up to 9 degrees higher than the the ocean water. This technology was founded by Fernando Fischmann and the aim is to allow for ‘lagoons of unlimited size’ with crystal clear water and reduced costs to typical pools.

சூழலுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு மாற்றி யோசித்து அதற்கு செயல் வடிவம் கொடுத்ததுடன் ஆஸ்திரேலியாவுக்கு நம் ஊர் இளநீரை ஏற்றுமதி செய்யும் காஜாமுகமதுவுக்கு எழுதப் படிக்கத் தெரியாது என்பது ஆச்சரியமாக இருக்கிறது. இவ்வளவு மெனக்கெட்டு உருவாக்கப்படும் இந்த இளநீரை மொத்தவிலைக்கு ரூ.20-க்கு விற்கிறார். சில்லறைக் கடைகளில் இதை ரூ.25-க்கு விற்கிறார்கள்.

Detroit Gets Court”s Nod to exit Bankruptcy !!!

Detroit won U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval on Friday for a road map to end its fiscal free fall and revitalise a city sinking under a huge debt load and dysfunctional government.

Judge Steven Rhodes confirmed the city’s plan to shed about $7 billion of its $18 billion of debt and obligations and plough $1.7 billion into improvements, finding it both fair to creditors and feasible to implement.

“The city has worked honestly, diligently, and tirelessly to accomplish precisely the remedy that the bankruptcy code establishes for municipalities,” Mr. Rhodes said.

He acknowledged the anger the bankruptcy fuelled among many Detroit residents and urged them to look forward.

If Shubham Banerjee cannot lay claim to being the world’s youngest venture capital-backed entrepreneur, he comes very close.

Banerjee was 12 years old when he closed an early-stage funding round with Intel Capital, the company’s venture capital arm, last month for his prototype for a low-cost Braille printer. Since then, the San Jose, California middle-schooler has turned 13.

That’s young, even by the standards of Silicon Valley, where many venture capitalists unapologetically prefer to fund youth over experience.

Young entrepreneurs usually have reached at least their mid-teens when they hit it big. Nick D’Aloisio, founder of online news aggregator Summly, was 17 when Yahoo bought his company last year for $30 million.

Brothers John and Patrick Collison, behind payments service Stripe, were 16 and 19 when they sold an earlier business to a Canadian company for $5 million.

After reading a fundraising flyer about the blind, Banerjee felt inspired to turn a high-tech version of Legos, the toy building blocks, into a device that could print in Braille. One day, he wants to mass-produce the printers and sell them for about $350, far less than Braille printers cost now.

This past summer, he worked on incorporating an Intel Edison chip, a processor aimed at hobbyists, into the printer. In September, Intel invited him to a conference in India to highlight uses for Edison. There, he got a big surprise.

Intel executive Mike Bell announced from the conference stage that the giant chipmaker would invest in his company, Braigo Labs. Until then, his funding consisted of the $35,000 his parents gave him.

“I turned back to my dad, and said, ‘What did he just say?'” Banerjee recalled. “I was all over the place.”

Banerjee and a spokesman for Intel Capital declined to disclose the size of the investment. A person familiar with the matter said it was a few hundred thousand dollars. He plans to use it to build a better prototype of the printer and test it with more groups for the blind.

After the announcement, Banerjee had to bone up on unfamiliar terms such as “venture capital.”

He also needed to convince adults to co-sign his funding and patent documents. Among the company officials he turned to: Braigo’s president, his mom, Malini.

Banerjee says he gets mostly As and Bs as a student at the ChampionSchool in San Jose, California. Teachers have given him time off to attend events like the conference in India and the Intel Global Capital summit this week in Huntington Beach, California. He catches up on school work on weekends, he says.

This is the second Intel investment connected to the Banerjee family. His dad, Neil, works for Kno, an education start-up that Intel bought last year.

While many young entrepreneurs who win venture-capital cash end up ditching their education to focus on their businesses full time, Banerjee says he won’t take that path.

“It’s an after-school thing,” he says….

(CNN) — Dubai, long champion of all things biggest, longest andmost expensive, will soon have some competition from neighboring Saudi Arabia.

Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, could be stripped of its Guinness title if Saudi Arabia succeeds in its plans to construct the even larger Kingdom Tower in Jeddah — a prospect looking more likely as work begins next week, according toConstruction Weekly.

Consultants Advanced Construction Technology Services have recently announced testing materials to build the 3,280-feet (1 kilometer) skyscraper (the Burj Khalifa, by comparison, stands at a meeker 2,716 feet, or 827 meters).

The Kingdom Tower, estimated to cost $1.23 billion, would have 200 floors and overlook the Red Sea. Building it will require about 5.7 million square feet of concrete and 80,000 tons of steel,according to the Saudi Gazette.

Building a structure that tall, particularly on the coast, where saltwater could potentially damage it, is no easy feat. The foundations, which will be 200 feet (60 meters) deep, need to be able to withstand the saltwater of the nearby ocean. As a result, Advanced Construction Technology Services will test the strength of different concretes.

Wind load is another issue for buildings of this magnitude. To counter this challenge, the tower will change shape regularly.

“Because it changes shape every few floors, the wind loads go round the building and won’t be as extreme as on a really solid block,” Gordon Gill explained toConstruction Weekly. Gill is a partner at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the design architects for the project.

Delivering the concrete to higher floors will also be a challenge. Possibly, engineers could use similar methods to those employed when building the Burj Khalifa; 6 million cubic feet of concrete was pushed through a single pump, usually at night when temperatures were low enough to ensure that it would set.

Though ambitious, building the Kingdom Tower should be feasible, according to Sang Dae Kim, the director of theCouncil on Tall Buildings.

“At this point in time we can build a tower that is one kilometer, maybe two kilometers. Any higher than that and we will have to do a lot of homework,” he told Construction Weekly.
