Teachings of Guru Nanak that Make Sense Even Today….

Five centuries after the passing of Guru Nanak, his words still resonate with his followers.  Let’s take a look at 10 of his teachings that make sense to this day.

1. Never forget the poor.

This mantra was relevant in 1500 when there was no concept of poverty alleviation, and is just as relevant now, when poverty hasn’t left the world.  When Nanak was 12, his father gave him Rs. 20 to set up a business. Nanak bought food worth Rs. 20 and gave it away. When his father asked him about this investment, Nanak told him it was a “true business”.

Today, a Gurudwara named Sacha Sauda (true business) exists, where Guru Nanak fed the poor.

2. There is one God

Using religion to segregate people into categories is awful. In the Guru’s own words, “There is neither Hindu nor Muslim.”

On his visit to Hardiwar, he saw people offering the water of the Ganges towards the sun in the east, as an offering to their ancestors in heaven. He began to throw water towards the West. When others ridiculed him, he said: “If Ganges water will reach your ancestors in heaven, why should the water I throw not reach my fields in the Punjab, which are far less distant?

3. Women are equal to men.

At a time when other Indian religions wanted quiet, demure women in the temple and no women in the mosque, he permitted women to join religious gatherings and openly sing their praises of God.

4. Running away to a forest won’t give you enlightenment.

“…Remember the essence of religion/ Is meekness and sympathy/ But a life of goodness and purity/ Amid the world’s temptations…” (Guru Nanak)

Maybe one could achieve enlightenment in forests centuries ago, but we’re not capable of that today. And Guru Nanak doesn’t even require you to do that. He believed that living as a householder was better than going away for a divine truth. Nanak himself was a farmer even after achieving enlightenment.

5. These five evils are probably ruining your life.

Most, if not all, suffering of big city life comes from these five evils.

6. Find your own guru

You need a mentor to guide you on how to live right. In Guru Nanak’s words, living right is much superior to visiting pilgrimage destinations.

7.  Be selfless.

The Punjab Golden Temple feeds over a 100,000 people of all religions every single day. Not because there is some divine gain, but because it is a sacred duty. For Nanak, the concept of selfless service was a way of life.

8.  Fight superstition of any kind.

Nanak devoted his life to attacking formal rituals, caste, and practices that didn’t make any sense. This is the simplest way you can find meaning and purpose in your own life – cutting out the clutter of what society dictates you should do.

9. Simplicity is beautiful.

The world is a scriptural text. Time is a great preacher. There is no greater teacher than your heart. God is the greatest friend. With full faith in these four entities, lead your life on this earth. Prema (love) is the natural possession of every human being. It is the fruit of the tree of life. There are certain impediments to taste a fruit. You first have to remove the skin and the rind covering the pulp inside and also cast off the seed. The fruit of love is covered by the thick skin of ego. You have to peel off this skin of ‘mine’ and ‘thine’. Then only you can taste the sweet juice. That is why the Vedas describe God as Raso Vai Saḥ (Supreme Sweet Essence). So develop pure love, and through it establish unity with the Divine. The path of love is the shortest and the fastest road to realise the Divine.

The photo – of epic proportions, may we say – was taken at the annual White House Passover Seder held last month.

In the picture, little Claudia Moser lies face-down on the carpet in what parents will recognize as classic tantrum pose. What makes the picture even more adorable is the expression on Obama’s face, as if he were saying “you see what I have to deal with?”

The tantrum however has made Claudia a hit on the internet.

பௌர்ணமியில திருவண்ணாமலையில கிரிவலம் போறமாதிரி பர்வத மலையை மார்கழி மாசம் ஒண்ணம்தேதி பிரதட்சணம் பண்றது சுத்துவட்டாரத்துல உள்ள கிராமத்து மக்களோட வழக்கம். பரமாசார்யா எப்போல்லாம் அந்தப் பக்கமா போறாரோ அப்போல்லாம் அந்த மலையை பிரதட்சணம் பண்ணிடுவார். தோராயமா முப்பத்தஞ்சு, முப்பத்தாறு கிலோமீட்டர் தூரம் சுத்திவர வேண்டியது இருக்கும். ஆசார்யா கூட போறவாள்லாம், மேல்மூச்சு கீழ்மூச்சு வாங்க நடப்பா. ஆனா, பெரியவா வழக்கமா சாதாரணப் பாதையில நடக்கறதைவிட ரொம்ப வேகமா, அதேசமயம் கொஞ்சமும் தடுமாறாம அந்த மலைப்பாதையில நடப்பார்.

ஒருதரம் மார்கழி மாசம் ஒண்ணாந்தேதி அன்னிக்கு பர்வத மலையை வலம் வரணும்னுட்டு முதல்நாளே போய்பக்கத்துல முகாம் போட்டுட்டா பெரியவா. சரியான பாதை இல்லாத அந்தக் காலத்துலயே கிட்டத்தட்ட ரெண்டு லட்சம்பேர் கிரிவலம் பண்ணுவா. அதனால விடியற்காலம்பற மூணு மணிக்கே பிரதட்சணம் பண்ண ஆரம்பிச்சுடணும்னு தீர்மானிச்சார், ஆசார்யா.

அதுக்கப்புறம் பெரியவா கூட வந்த சிப்பந்திகள் எல்லாரும் போஜனம் பண்ணிட்டு தூங்கப் போயிட்டா. பாதிராத்திரி இருக்கும். சிப்பந்தியில ஒருத்தர் திடீர்னு எழுந்து உட்கார்ந்தார். தான் எழுந்துண்டதோட இல்லாம மத்தவாளையும் எழுப்பினார்.

பெரியவா என் சொப்பனத்துல வந்து, “நீங்கள்லாம் சின்ன வயசுக்காரா. பசியைத் தாங்கிண்டு பிரதட்சணம் பண்ணுவேள். சுத்துப்பட்டு கிராமத்துல இருந்தெல்லாம் பலரும் வராளே… அவாள்லாம் சாப்பாட்டுக்கு என்ன பண்ணுவா? கைக்குழந்தை இருந்தாலும், அடுத்தவேளை சாப்பாட்டுக்கே கஷ்டப்பட்டாலும் எல்லாத்தையும் சகிச்சுண்டு. குழந்தைகளையும் தூக்கிண்டு பிரதட்சணம் பண்றாளே அவாளுக்கு சாப்பிட ஏதாவது பண்ணக்கூடாதா?’ன்னு கேட்டார்னு சொன்னார்.

உடனே இன்னொருத்தர், “எனக்கும் அதேமாதிரி கனவு வந்துது. பண்டிகை, நாள் நட்சத்திரம்னாதான் இனிப்புப் பண்டமெல்லாம் பண்ணணுமா? அன்னதானத்துலயும் இனிப்புப் பலகாரத்தை சேர்த்துக் குடுத்தா, பாவம் ஏழைகள் சந்தோஷப்படுவா இல்லையா?’ எப்படின்னு பெரியவா சொல்றமாதிரி இருந்துது.

அவ்வளவுதான் எல்லாரும் எழுந்துண்டுட்டா. கிரிவலம் வர்றவாளுக்கு அன்னதானம் பண்ணறது. அதுவும் இனிப்போட தர்றதுன்னு தீர்மானிச்சா. ஆனா, பரிசாரகர் சொன்ன ஒரு விஷயம் அவாளை யோசிக்க வைச்சுது. முகாம்ல கொஞ்சமே கொஞ்சம்தான் அரிசி இருக்கு. அதைவைச்சுண்டு, எப்படி லட்சக்கணக்கானவாளுக்கு அன்னதானம் பண்ண சமைக்கறதுன்னுதான் கேள்வி எழுப்பினார் அவர்.

அந்த அர்த்தராத்திரியில எங்கேயும் போய் அரிசி கேட்கவோ, வாங்கிண்டு வரவோ வசதி கிடையாது. அன்னதானம் பண்ணணும்னா, விடியற்காலம்பறவே சமையல் பண்ணிடணும் அதனால என்ன செய்யறதுன்னு அவா யோசிச்சுண்டு இருந்தப்போ, முகாமோட வாசல்ல மாட்டுவண்டி ஒண்ணு வந்து நின்றது.

அதுல இருந்து இறங்கிவந்த ஒருத்தர், “என்ன ஆச்சர்யம்! எல்லாரும் தூங்கிண்டு இருப்பேள்னு நினைச்சேன். முழிச்சுண்டு இருக்கேளே… நான் பக்கத்து ஊர்க்காரன். பரமாசார்யா பிடி அரிசித் திட்டத்தை அறிவிச்சதுல இருந்து எங்க ஊர்க்காரா எல்லாரும் அதைத் தட்டாம செஞ்சுண்டு இருக்கோம். மூணுமாசமா சேர்த்த அரிசியை காஞ்சிபுரத்துல கொண்டு வந்து தரலாம்னு நினைச்சுண்டு இருந்தப்போ, ஆசார்யா இங்கேயே முகாம் போட்டிருக்கான்னு தெரிஞ்சுது. அதான் இங்கேயே கொடுத்துடலாம்னு கொண்டு வந்தேன்’ சொல்லிவிட்டு அரிசி மூட்டைகளை இறக்கிவைக்க ஆரம்பிச்சார்.

கிட்டத்தட்ட முப்பது மூட்டை அரிசியோட சர்க்கரை, உளுந்தும் இறக்கிவைச்சார். அதெல்லாமும் சிலர் குடுத்ததா சொன்னார். “விடியற்காலம்பறவே எனக்கு முக்கியமான வேலை இருக்கு. அதனால ஆசார்யாகிட்டே என்னோட வந்தனத்தை சொல்லிடுங்கோ, நான் புறப்படறேன்’னு சொன்னவர் பதிலுக்குக்கூட காத்துண்டு இருக்காம புறப்பட்டுப் போயிட்டார்.

அன்னதானத்துக்கு ஆசார்யாளோட அனுகிரகம் கிடைச்சுடுத்துங்கறதைப் புரிஞ்சுண்டு மளமளன்னு அடுப்பைப் பத்தவைச்சு சமையலைத் தொடங்கினா எல்லாரும் உளுந்தும் சர்க்கரையும் கிடைச்சுட்டதால ஜாங்கிரியும் சேர்த்துத் தரலாம்னு தீர்மானிச்சு பண்ண ஆரம்பிச்சுட்டா.

எல்லாரும் சமைக்கறதுல தீவிரமா இருந்ததுல மணியைக்கூட பார்க்கலை. தீர்மானிச்சபடி மூணுமணிக்கு டாண்ணு பிரதட்சணத்தை ஆரம்பிச்சட்ட ஆசார்யா, சமைச்சுண்டு இருந்தவா பக்கம் மெதுவா திரும்பினார். “முப்பது மூட்டை அரிசி… அன்னதானம் பண்ண போதுமோன்னோ! பக்குவமா பண்ணி ஒருத்தர் விடாம எல்லாருக்கும் குடுத்துடுங்கோ!’ சொன்னவர், மௌனமா புன்னகைச்சட்ட நடக்க ஆரம்பிச்சுட்டார்.

வந்தது முப்பது மூட்டை அரிசிங்கறதை யாருமே மகா பெரிவா கிட்டே சொல்லலை. அது மட்டுமல்லாம, அன்னதானம் பண்ணணும்னு ஆசார்யா நேரடியா யார்கிட்டேயும் சொல்லலை. சொப்பனத்துல வந்த காட்சியை வைச்சுதான் பாதிராத்திரியில தீர்மானமே பண்ணினாங்க. இதெல்லாம் எப்படி அவருக்கு தெரிஞ்சுது? இதையெல்லாம்விட புரிஞ்சுக்கவே முடியாத புதிர் என்ன தெரியுமா? சமைச்ச முப்பது மூட்டை அரிசி ரொம்ப சரியா கிரிவலம் வந்த கடைசி நபருக்குக் குடுத்ததோட தீர்ந்துடுத்து. அதுக்கப்புறம் யாரும் வலமும் வரலை. அன்னமும் மீறலை.

The Right Way to Escape a Bear Attack …!!!

This is how you escape from a bear attack.

Ralph Perrson was walking with his wife and dog in the woods when he noticed his dog was barking differently, the Swedish outlet The Local reported. Suddenly a large Eurasian brown bear ran out of the woods and charged at him.

Fortunately for Perrson, he knew bears are much more scared of us than we are of them. Standing his ground, he raised his arms and let out a primal yell. The very startled bear spun right around and ran back into the woods.

Like black bears in the US, Eurasian brown bears avoid humans and rarely attack unless provoked or startled, which this one probably was. There have only been two fatal attacks in Sweden in the past century.

Experts recommend using the same tactics to avoid encounters with both species: Make yourself big, speak loudly, and never run away. (Be warned though: If you run into a grizzly bear in the US, this approach might not work.)

Perrson kept his head on straight, and both bear and human got away safely.

Everything is suffused with love (Prema). So we can unhesitatingly declare that the Supreme Lord is the form of love (prema-swarupa). In all living things, love manifests itself in various forms and is known through many names such as love for offspring, affection, devotion to God, desire (vaatsalya, anuraaga, bhakthi, ishtam) etc., based on the direction in which it is channelised. But whatever the form, the essence is the same. On the basis of this knowledge and experience, it is clear that the supreme Lord is the inner Atma of all created things(Sarva-butha-antar-atma). That which teaches the highest knowledge of this unity is known as nondualism (a-dvaitha); that which teaches the principle of the lover and the Loved is known as dualism (dvaita);that which teaches about all three, love, lover, and loved — or nature(prakriti), individual (jiva), and Brahman— is known as qualified nondualism (visishta-advaita). But these three are one.

An important research published in 2008 by the German cancer research center, showed that apples offer a significant health advantage. When comparing between a group that had less than one apple per day and a group that had one or more apples a day, the latter was found to have less risk of mouth cancer, larynx cancer, breast cancer, intestinal cancer, kidney cancer and ovarian cancer.
These findings support a new research performed at Cornell university, showing that the peel of the apple has strong anti-oxidant properties, a powerful block against the influences of breast cancer cells. Researchers found that the higher the concentraion of apples, the lower the concentration of cancerous cells.
Cancerous growths are uncontrollable growths of cells independently spreading through the body. The growths are based on three principal levels: The first stage causes mutations in cell DNA. The second, when the growth becomes malignant and grows faster, and finally when it metastases and spreads throughout the body.
In the case of a cancerous growth, apples aren’t only used as anti-oxidants, but also improve the function of the immune system, which helps clean out the growths at the early stages.
In addition to boosting the immune system and fighting cancerous growths, apples also help control the levels of cholesterol and sugars in the blood, prevent heart disease and improve mouth hygiene. The fact that they contain more than 80% water and a long line of essential vitamins, makes them one of the healthiest foods available.
The secret? The nutritional fibers 
 
Apples are considered a vital source of nutritional fibers. Eating one apple a day (with peel) can award us about 4.4 grams of nutritional fibers, which is 1/5 of our entire day’s recommended amount.

Everything. Apples are a terrific source of nutritional fibers, especially a group of fibers called Pectin. This is a group of complex carbohydrates that regulate our bowels, improve good cholesterol rates and is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial.
Researchers from UCLA have shown that consuming pectin instead of regular fibers, doubles the time it takes the stomach to empty from one hour to two. Meaning that we don’t feel hungry for a longer time. In fact, a recent research paper entitled: “Weight Loss Associated with a Daily Intake of Three Apples or Three Pears among Overweight Women”, shows that women who were overweight and were instructed to eat an apple or pear before each meal, lost significant weight, just for doing so. The women in the experiment were asked to eat regularly and just add the apple before the meal. What happened was that the apples and fibers crowded the stomach, increased the feeling of being full, and made the body absorb less calories.
Other sources of nutritional fibers are: Pears, Peaches, peas, carrots, seeds, nuts, peel of fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, oats and whole wheat. But apples offer many more advantages.
So if you want to:
Lose weight, eat one apple a day.

SOME Twitter users have been up in arms over this normal looking photo, but what is it that’s got them worked up? Can you spot the problem?

The Mirror reports that the photo isn’t some kind of optical illusion. But as some users noted, the man is allowing the woman to walk on the wrong side of the sidewalk — the side closest to the road.

“I’m sure half of you guys don’t even know what’s wrong with this picture. Smh (shake my head),” Twitter user ibi said on the original post.

Many were utterly clueless as to what the issue was, but many, such as Denzell Lowery saw it straight away.

“He should switch sides with her and hold her hand,” he commented.

“I think it’s just the ‘gentleman thing’ to do. just like opening doors. some women may not like that, but it doesn’t change,” another said.

According to Modern Gentleman Magazine, for men: “While walking down the street you should walk on the right side.

“No need to mention but if you have an umbrella with you, you should not swing with it. You never know who you might hit and hurt.”

“If you are walking down a street in the company of a woman or a man know that the right side is honorary side. You will let a woman walk on the right side of you or a man if he is a senior person. In this way we honour them,” the magazine state.

“This custom dates from the middle ages when knights wore the sword on the left side keeping the right side free, since the right arm was ‘fighting arm.’”

COMMENT: Is this a thing of the past? Or is it a rule that men should still follow?

Message For the Day…”All Forms of Ideal are Equally Valid and true …No Need for senseless hatred…”

People worship the Supreme Lord (Paramatma) as existing in some faraway place – say Ayodhya or Dwaraka and nowhere else, or as found in places where some image or picture exists and nowhere else. They worship that form itself as complete (Purna). Of course, it is not wrong to do so. What is wrong is to proclaim that only their belief is the truth, that the names and forms that they have ascribed are the only names and forms of the Divine, and that all other forms and names are worthless and inferior. It should be realized that the names and forms that are the ideals of others are as dear and sacred to those others as such names and forms are to oneself. Everyone should acquire the vision that all forms of the ideal are equally valid and true, without giving room to senseless hatred. Without internalizing this wisdom, it is impossible to realize the Divine.
