This photo does not show an eclipsed moon, but it does show a simultaneous sunset and (nearly) full moonrise as captured byEarthSky Facebook friend Andy Somers in Noumea, New Caledonia in September 2013. On Saturday, April 4, 2015 – from just the right spot on Earth – you might see something like this … but the moon will be in eclipse!

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a total lunar eclipse coming up this Saturday, April 4, 2015. North Americans will see the eclipse Saturday morning. Australians and Asians will see it Saturday evening.Read more about the April 4 eclipse here.

If you’re in just the right spot on Earth, you might observe the eclipsed moon setting while the sun rises – or the eclipsed moon rising while the sun sets. This is called a selenelion. Celestial geometry says this should not happen. After all, in order for an eclipse to take place, the sun and moon must be exactly 180 degrees apart in the sky, in a perfect alignment known as a syzygy. Such perfection – needed for an eclipse to take place – would seem to make it impossible to view the sun and eclipsed moon above your horizon simultaneously.

But – thanks to atmospheric refraction, the same effect that causes a spoon in a glass of water to appear broken in two – you might actually see images of the sun and totally eclipsed moon, both above your horizon at once, lifted up by the effect of refraction.

You need to be positioned in just the right spot on Earth’s surface to see a selenelion.

ஏப்ரல் 1ம் தேதியை முட்டாள்களின் தினமாக ஏன் அழைக்கிறோம்? கூகுளில் மேய்ந்தபோது, முட்டாள்களின் தினம் ஏன், எப்படி வந்தது? என்று தெரிய வந்தது.

அக்காலத்தில் ஒருவரின் தொப்பி அல்லது உடையில், ஏதாவது ஒரு கோணங்கித்தனம் செய்து விட்டு, அவர்களின் முதுகுக்குப்பின் அவர்களைப் பரிகசிக்கும் பழக்கம் இருந்தது. மனிதனுக்கு எப்போதுமே பிறரை ஏமாற்றப் பிடிக்கும், நையாண்டி செய்யப் பிடிக்கும், சின்ன சேட்டைகள் செய்யும் பழக்கம் பள்ளிப் பிள்ளைகளிடம் இருந்தது. சட்டையில், ‘இங்க்’ தெளிப்பர்; உருளைக்கிழங்கில், ‘ஏப்ரல் பூல்’ என்று செதுக்கி அதன் மீது, ‘இங்க’கை நிரப்பி நண்பனின் சட்டையில் அடிப்பர். பெரியவர்கள் நம்மிடம் கவலைப்படும்படியான ஏதாவது செய்தியைக் கூறி நம்மை நம்ப வைத்து பின், ‘ஏப்ரல் பூல்’ என்பர்.நாம் கண நிமிடம் ஏமாந்து போவதில் அவர்களுக்கு அத்தனை சந்தோஷம். நாம் ஏமாறாவிட்டால் அவர்கள் ஏமாந்து போவர். இவ்வாறு ஒருவரை மற்றவர் சீண்டவும், கிண்டலடிக்கவும் அப்போது நேரம் இருந்தது. ஆனால், இன்றோ அதற்கெல்லாம் நமக்கு ஏது நேரம்? அவரவர் ஓட்டம் அவரவர்க்கு. அவரவர் கவலையும், தேடலும் முட்டாள்கள் தினம் தான்.பலரும் நம்மை பல விஷயங்களில் தினம் தினம் முட்டாள்களாக்கிக் கொண்டு தானே இருக்கின்றனர்? நம் படிப்பறிவும், பட்டறிவும் நமக்கு உதவுவது இல்லை .காரணம், நம் பேராசை.

முட்டாள்தனமாக எல்லாரையும் நம்பி ஏமாந்து போய் விட்டு, பின், ‘விதி’ மீது பழி போடுகிறோம்; ‘கடவுள் கைவிட்டு விட்டார்’ என்று புலம்புகிறோம். தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்ளும் முடிவையும் எடுக்கிறோம்.இன்றைய உலகில், யாரிடமும் உண்மை இல்லை. பொருள் சார்ந்த வாழ்க்கையில் ஒருவரிடமும் நம்பகத்தன்மை இல்லை. தான் வாழ, தன் சந்ததி மட்டுமே வாழ மனசாட்சியை அடகு வைத்து விட்டனர். பணத்திற்கு முன் சுற்றமும், நட்பும் முக்கியமா என்ன? சுயநலத்திற்கு உள்ளார்ந்த உறவும் கிடையாது, ஆத்மார்த்த நட்பும் கிடையாது. விவரம் தெரியாமல் ஏமாறுவோரை மன்னிக்கலாம்; அவர்களுக்காக பரிதாபப்படலாம். ஆனால், கண்ணைத் திறந்து கொண்டே போய் பாழுங்கிணற்றில் விழுவோருக்காக
அனுதாபப்படத் தேவையில்லை.

சீட்டுப் பிடிப்பவர்களும், நிதி நிறுவனம் நடத்துவோரும் மக்களின் பணத்தை சுருட்டிக் கொண்டு ஓடும் கதை அனைவருக்கும் தெரிந்தது தான். இத்தொழிலில் இருக்கும் நேர்மையானோர் வெகு சிலரே. ஆனாலும், மக்கள் ஏமாறுகின்றனரே? கோழியில் முதலீடு செய்தால் கோடிகளை அள்ளலாம் என்று பேராசைப்பட்டு பணத்தை கோட்டை விட்டனரே. அவர்களிடம் பணத்தை முதலீடு செய்து விட்டு, அவர்கள் பட்டை நாமம் சார்த்த, தன் பரந்த நெற்றியையும் காட்டுவோர் முட்டாள்கள் அல்லாமல் வேறு யார்? எத்தனை பட்டாலும் நம் மக்கள் திருந்துவது இல்லை.ஏமாற வேண்டும் என்று கங்கணம் கட்டிக் கொண்டு களத்தில் இறங்குவோரை கண்டால் நமக்கு கோபமும், எரிச்சலும் தான் வருகிறது. மக்களை எத்திப் பிழைப்போருக்கு மூளையும் அதிகம். முதியோர் உதவித்தொகை கொடுக்கின்றனர் என்று கூறி மூதாட்டிகளை அழைத்துச் செல்கின்றனர். ‘வசதியாக இருப்பதாகத் தெரிந்தால் பணம் கிடைக்காது; எனவே, நகையை கழற்றி பையில் வைத்துக் கொள்’ என்று அறிவுரை கூறுவது போல பேசி அவர்களின் நகையைக் களவாடுகின்றனர்.

அதேபோல, ‘சட்டையில் காக்கை எச்சம்’ என்றும், ‘கீழே பணம் கிடக்கிறது’ என்றும் கூறி, நம் கவனத்தை திசை திருப்பி பணப்பையை கவர்ந்து கொண்டு ஓடி விடுகின்றனர். தினம் தினம் இதுபோன்ற செய்திகளைப் படிக்கிறோம். இப்படி ஏமாறுவோர் எப்போதும் முட்டாள்களே!தங்கள் தலைவனுக்காகத் தீக்
குளிக்கும் அடிமட்டத் தொண்டன், அரசியல்வாதிகளின் மறுபக்கத்தை அறியாத அப்பாவித் தொண்டன். கட்சிக்காக தன் உறவையும் நட்பையும் பகைத்துக் கொள்ளும் தொண்டன், தேர்தல் நாளன்று வெட்டு, குத்து என்று களம் இறங்கும் தொண்டன்… இவர்களையெல்லாம் எந்தக் கணக்கில் எடுத்துக் கொள்ள?பெற்றோரின் பிள்ளைப்பாசம் அவர்களை எளிதில் முட்டாளாக்கி விடுகிறது. பையன் வலைதளத்தில் மேய்ந்து கொண்டிருப்பான். ஆனால், அவன் பெற்றோரோ தன் மகன் பெரிய கம்ப்யூட்டர் இன்ஜினியர் ஆவான்; சதா சர்வ நேரமும் கணினியே கதி என்று இருக்கிறான் என்று நினைத்துப் பூரித்துப் போகின்றனர். வாழ்க்கையைத் தொலைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் இந்த இளம் குருத்துகள் முட்டாள்கள். இவர்கள் தங்களைத் தாங்களே ஏமாற்றிக் கொள்கின்றனர்.

பெண் பிள்ளைகளும் தங்கள் பங்குக்கு பெற்றோரை ஏமாற்றுகின்றனர். ‘அலைபேசி’ என்னும் அணு ஆயுதம், பலரின் நிம்மதியைக் குலைக்கும் எமனாகி விட்டது. அருமையான ஓர் அறிவியல் கண்டுபிடிப்பு, ‘குரங்கின் கையில் பூமாலை’ கணக்காக ஆகிவிட்டது. ஓர் பெண்ணின் கையில் எந்நேரமும் அலைபேசி இருந்தால் பெற்றவளுக்கு எச்சரிக்கை மணி அடிக்க வேண்டாமா? என்றைக்கும் இல்லாத திருநாளாய் மகள் தலை முதல் கால் வரை இழுத்துப் போர்த்திக் கொண்டு படுத்திருக்கிறாள் என்றால், அவள் தன் ஆண் நண்பனுக்கு குறுந்தகவல் அனுப்பிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாள் என்று ஊகிக்க வேண்டாமா?தன் காதலை வீட்டில் சொல்லாமல் மறைத்து நல்ல பெண் போல நடிப்பது, வரன் பார்க்கும்போதும் வாயைத் திறக்காமல் இருப்பது, பெற்றோர் சம்பந்தம் பேசி முடித்து, சத்திரத்திற்கு முன்பணம் கொடுத்து, புடவை வாங்கி, அழைப்பிதழ் அடித்து, ஊரை, உறவை அழைக்கும் வரை சமத்தாக நடித்து விட்டு, இறுதியில் திருமணத்திற்கு முதல் நாள் ஓடிப் போகின்றனர்.

இந்த சம்பவத்தை செய்தித்தாளில் யார் வீட்டு நிகழ்வாகவோ படித்து விட்டு அடுத்த செய்திக்குத் தாவுகிறோம். ஆனால், பெற்றவர்களின் வலியும், வேதனையும், அவமானமும் எத்தனை பெரியது. இப்படி முட்டாளாக்கப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் பெற்றோரின் எண்ணிக்கை கூடிக் கொண்டே போகிறது. தான் காதலிக்கும் ஆண் தன்னை திருமணம் செய்து கொள்வான் என்று நம்பி திருமணத்திற்கு முன்பே தன்னை அவனிடம் இழந்து விட்டு, பின்னர் அவன் தன்னைக் கைவிட்டு விட்டான் என்று புலம்பும் முட்டாள் பெண்கள் அதிகம். சினிமாவில் மிக மிக நல்லவராக நடிக்கும் கதாநாயகன் தன் நிஜ வாழ்க்கையிலும் அப்படியே என்று நம்பும் ரசிகன், கோடிகளை அவர் அள்ள அவருடைய கட்-அவுட்டிற்கு பாலாபிஷேகம் செய்யும் ரசிகன், தேர்தல் முடிந்தவுடன் தன் தொகுதி மேம்பாடு அடையும் என்று நம்பும் வாக்காளன், பெற்றுக் கொண்ட பணத்திற்குப் பால் மாறாமல் தனக்கே மக்கள் ஓட்டு போடுவர் என்று நம்பும் வேட்பாளர்.வெளிநாட்டில் வேலை கிடைத்து விட்டால் பணத்தில் புரளலாம் என்று கனவுடன் கடன் வாங்கி ஏஜன்டிடம் பணம் கொடுத்து, அங்கே கொத்தடிமைகளாகிப் போன ஏழைகள்.சில ஆயிரங்களுக்கு ஆசைப்பட்டு குழந்தைகளை வேறு மாநிலத்துக்கு வேலைக்கு அனுப்பும் ஏழை பெற்றோர், கவர்ச்சிகரமான விளம்பரங்களை நம்பி பொருளை வாங்கும் நுகர்வோர், ‘தர்மம் மறுபடியும் வெல்லும்’ என்று இலவு காத்த கிளி போல காத்திருக்கும் நேர்மையாளர் கள் – இவர்களும் முட்டாள்களே.

தானாக நமக்கு ஒரு பிரச்னை வந்தால் அனுபவித்துத் தான் ஆக வேண்டும். வேறு வழியே இல்லை. ஆனால், வலிந்து போய் பிரச்னை யில் மாட்டிக் கொள்ள வேண்டுமா. பேராசை தான் கண்ணையும், அறிவையும் மறைக்கிறது. பிறர் சொத்துக்கு ஆசைப்பட வேண்டாம், குறுக்கு வழியில் தனம் தேட வேண்டாம். ஒருவரையும் சட்டென நம்பி விட வேண்டாம் என்ற பால பாடத்தைக் கற்க வேண்டும். நகையை பீரோவில் வைத்து விட்டுப் போவது, பின் திருடு போய் விட்டது என்று புலம்புவது. நம் தலையை நாமே வெட்டுக் கத்திக்கு அடியில் கொண்டு போய் வைக்கிறோம், அவ்வளவே. விழிப்புடன் இருந்தால் மட்டுமே இந்த உலகில் வாழ முடியும். நல்லவராக இருப்பதுடன் வல்லவராகவும் இருக்க வேண்டியது அவசியம். எனவே, ஏப்ரல் 1ம் தேதி மட்டுமே முட்டாள்களின் தினமாக இருந்து விட்டுப் போகட்டும். ஏனைய நாட்கள் அனைத்தும் அறிவாளிகளின் தினங்களாக விடியட்டும்.

” Dear Pilots of the Plane …Who are Taking Me Home…”

WE’RE in the midst of one of aviation’s darkest times.

We have been left shocked and heartbroken time after time again over the past year with a series of unimaginable flight tragedies, the latest seeing 150 people killed on board Germanwings Flight 9525.

So it’s to be expected that we’re all looking for answers, hoping to prevent another tragedy from happening in our skies. And as more and more harrowing information comes to light of the terrifying final moments on board the doomed Germanwings jet, many flyers are on edge at the thought of taking to the skies.

So imagine this pilot’s surprise when a passenger decided to share some kindness in a rather unexpected way.

The pilot, who is unnamed for security reasons, was handed a note from the passenger during a flight from Spain to the south of England on Monday.

Instead of being a complaint or criticism, the glowing note voiced appreciation for the incredible job pilots do, ultimately seeking to inject kindness into a shocked world.

The thrilled pilot shared the note with a colleague, Jai Dillon, who then posted it onto Twitter where it has already been shared thousands of times.

Dillon, a pilot based in the UK who has been flying commercially for the past three years, told news.com.au his co-worker wanted to share the letter that had touched his heart.

“They were incredible happy,” Dillon, 23, said. “I feel that the positive message is worth spreading.”

It’s a good reminder that thousands of pilots and crew get millions of people safely from point A to B every year. To you all, we say thank you.

Every aspirant who seeks the Divine through the path of devotion should strive to keep away from the turmoil, cruelties, and falsehoods of this world and practice truth, righteousness, love, and peace. Those who seek union with God and the welfare of the world should discard as worthless both praise and blame, appreciation and derision, prosperity and adversity. They should courageously keep steady faith in their own innate reality and dedicate themselves to spiritual uplift. No one, including a Maha-purusha (Avatar), can ever escape criticism and blame. But such people do not bend, but hold on to truth. Those who indulge in criticism or blame later wade through unbearable trouble and then realise the real nature of great ones and start to praise them. Their weakness and ignorance is the root-cause for such criticism. So, keep away from doubters and ignorant people and desist from discussing your beliefs with them.

” Go Back to the Year 90s…” !!!

Everyone talks about how technology has taken over our lives and about how it has its downsides, despite having made our lives easy. And I’d have to say, it holds quite a bit of truth.

So, if you’re feeling tired of all the advanced, digital life you’re leading, you could always try going old school for a bit, and take yourself back to simpler times. Here are a few things you could do that might seem simple, but are guaranteed to have a big impact in transporting you back in time.

Send a letter to a loved one and start a long conversation

Tell them about your day, week, and subsequently about your life in general, without the help of any other mode of communication.

Make use of your old landline, and call someone on theirs

Make someone a mixed tape or a CD with all their favourite songs…

To make it better, put old songs in them, exclusively.

Listen to music with your old walkman/CD man

Carry all your favourite cassettes and CDs, and change them when necessary.

Spot an ice-cream cart, and relish on some yummy ice-cream

They’re surely going to be around children’s parks. Enjoy an ice-cream cone in a children’s park!

Go to a cyber cafe close by, and spend an hour surfing the net on a PC

Some of the computers might even still have Windows XP.

Pay a visit to your old school, and reminisce

Who knows, you might end up meeting some old teachers there.

Fix an old radio at home….

And listen to a few cassettes after you do.

Check the time- not on your phone, but on your wrist watch, for a week

There still are a lot of us who wear watches, but not all of us really use it to tell the time. Take an entire week and just go by the time of your watch, and soak in the feeling of not constantly checking your phone for every little thing.

Even if time flies by, there are these little things we’ll have that we can go back to whenever we feel like everything is changing. Change is good, but going back to what it was before once in a while is great.

Striped sunrises and the shadows they cast

Peter Lowenstein of Mutare, Zimbabwe – who recently contributed an interesting photo of straight lightning to these pages – has submitted another set of unusual photos for us. One is above, and the other is at the bottom of this post. The photos were taken a year apart, but might have been taken on the same day if two photographers had been standing back to back, one shooting a cloud-striped sunrise and the other shooting the sun’s first light – showing banded cloud shadow – shining on a nearby mountain slope. Peter wrote:

The first picture was taken almost a year ago from a high vantage point in the Bvumba Mountains looking east over Chikamba in Mozambique and shows a glorious sun striped by rising through thin layers of early morning cloud and mist on the horizon. I captured it at 5:57 a.m. using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10 compact camera in sunset mode and x16 zoom setting.

The second picture was taken at sunrise yesterday morning (March 29, 2015) from the verandah of my house and shows alternate stripes of bright orange sunlight and the dark shadows of a thin strip of cloud and the eastern horizon being projected by the sun onto Murawa Mountain a few kilometers to the west. This spectacle lasted less than a minute before being faded by larger clouds passing in front of the sun. It was captured at 6:10 a.m. using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 compact camera in sunset mode and x2 zoom setting.

Bottom line: Peter Lowenstein in Zimbabwe took these photos a year apart. One shows a sunrise striped with cloud, and the other shows cloud-striped sunrise’s cloud shadow.

The Strange History of April Fool’s Day…!!!

Have you ever stopped to think WHY you’re Saran Wrapping a toilet seat on April Fools’ Day?

Do you think the first time a man pranked his neighbor everyone reveled in the delight of it so much they decided to make a holiday out of it? Is that where April Fools’ Day came from?

Well, it’s as good a guess as any because the origins of this high jinx-filled holiday aren’t entirely

solidified. There are, however, some strong theories of how it came about.

The most popular theory of the holiday actually has Catholic origins: In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII replaced the widely used Julian calendar with the now currently instated Gregorian calendar. This moved the start of the year from April 1st to January 1st.

Those who were late to catch on or refused to acknowledge the change and still celebrated the New Year in April were mocked and teased (humans are the best!). In France, a common prank was throwing paper fish at the springtime New Year’s celebrators and calling them poisson d’avril, or April Fish, a term for a gullible person.

Other cultures and societies have springtime celebrations centering around foolishness and joviality. Hilaria was an ancient Roman celebration on the vernal equinox for Cybele, the mother of the gods. People would dress up in costumes and masks, imitating those in higher positions of power.

Sizdah Be-dar, which falls thirteen days after Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is an occasion where families gather outside for picnics and celebrate the return to ordinary life after the New Year. It’s a day where laughter is used to overpower the bad omens and thoughts for the upcoming year.

In Hinduism, Holi is the spring festival of colors where crowds welcome the warming weather and longer days by throwing colored dyes on each other. Covered in layers of powdered dyes, people were indistinguishable by class, caste, or gender.

As with many other traditions/holidays, like Santa Claus, Thanksgiving, or Halloween, there doesn’t seem to be one exact origin of April Fools’ Day, which might be for the best. Why do we need one excuse to be silly?

A photo of a 101-year-old great-great-grandmother holding her great-great-grandson, posted on the parenting blog Life of Dad, has seen hundreds of people share similar pictures.

The original image, which received more than 23,000 comments, inspired countless new submissions — proving that having a relative whose bond crosses multiple generations is not as rare as many may have thought.

‘Seriously incredible. We need to arrange a meetup of Centennials and their great-grand kids,’ wrote Life of Dad.

One image shows Ohio mom Amanda Garber’s son, Samuel, with his great-great-grandmother, Helen Willaman.

‘I love to hear the stories of when she was a little girl, or when she had a baby and how different it was back then.’
