The master of the house makes all the elaborate arrangements for a marriage in the family. He plans meticulously for the wedding ceremony, the reception, the menu, the illumination, the music, the decoration, etc.. These are very exciting when they are being planned and even while they are executed. But in the end when the bills arrive, will the master still be happy? In quite a few places, after the event is done, there may even be angst, disgust and grief. Isn’t it known from such experience that there is more joy in the actual doing than in the result that accrues. So it must be easy to discard the fruits of action, provided you spend some thought on the process ofkarma (performing action), and the worth of its fruit.

most South Indian families, except that, previous day’s cooked rice that was soaked in plain water the previous
night was consumed the next day morning with some nutritious supplements such as fresh buttermilk, slightly-salted
onions or other non-spicy pickles such as goose berry or lemon. This is an excellent, rich and the most nutritious
food. This is known as ” Pazhaya Saadham” (meaning old rice) in Tamil and “Saddhi Annamu” or “Saddhennamu” (meaning
cold rice) in Telugu.
An American Nutritionist, dietitian and scientist had researched on the food practices among various regions in the
world and concluded that the South Indian tradition of consuming the previous day’s cooked rice soaked in plain
water overnight, in the morning next day, as break-fast, is the best.
For centuries, this has been the staple food of many South Indian families, particularly of the low income groups.
It is, of course, now replaced with fashionable hot break-fast.
It is found out that previous day’s cooked rice soaked in plain water is very compact and complete break-fast. It
has the rare B6 B12 vitamins which are not otherwise easily available in other food supplements. This rice generates
and harbours trillions of beneficial bacteria that help digestion and has many disease fighting and immunity
developing agents. The bacteria that grow in the intestines due to this rice safeguard the internal organs and keep
all organs battle fit and ready. Consuming this rice helps quicker digestion and wards off ageing, bone related
ailments and muscular pains.
It is worth giving a try. The cooked rice can be soaked in an earthen vessel or vessels made of natural clay or
rock. (In Tamil families, vessels made of natural rock, called as “Kalchatti” was used. Many South Indian families
also use this even now though it is called by different names in other languages. Some families use this
“Kalchatti” that is handed down to them since generations even. It is found to be free from harmful bacteria and
other normal disease causing harmful elements.
Brown rice is the best for this as its nutrients are retained intact.
You will be happy to know that the American Nutritionist had listed the following benefits that accrue to the body
if you stick to the practice of consuming such soaked rice.
1. Consuming this rice as break-fast keeps the body light and
also energetic.
2. Beneficial bacteria gets produced in abundance for the
body.
3. Stomach ailments disappear when this is consumed in the
morning, as, excessive and harmful heat retained in the
body is neutralized.
4. As this food is very fibrous, it removes constipation and also dullness in the body.
5. Blood pressure is normalised and hypertension subsides appreciably.
6. Body feels less tired due to this food as a result of which
one feels fresh through out the day.
7. This removes allergy induced problems and also skin
related ailments.
8. It removes all types of ulcers in the body.
9. Fresh infections are kept at bay due to consuming this rice.
10. It helps in maintaining youthful and radiant look.
Once you consume this, the body does not crave for tea or coffee. In the olden days, people who worked in the fields
used to leave their houses in the early morning after consuming this soaked rice and worked hard for over 8 to 10
hours non-stop.
Dear Friends and wellwishers,
In fact one கனபாடிகள் said that it is the staple food students have before they begin the வேத பாராயணம் for the
day to provide the required nourishment and also offset the body heat generated during full throated chanting.

Sleepless Lakshmana !!!….Story Behind It !!!!
Lakshmanan !!… A story, ….Many of us Have not Heard !!!!
Soon after his birth, Lakshman kept crying until he was placed next to Ram. Since that day he was always beside Ram, accompanying him to protect Vishwamitras yagna and following him into exile in the forest. Such was his devotion that he refused to take his wife along with him to the forest. He even refused to sleep for 14 years so that he could serve his brother day and night. Lakshmans wife, Urmila, wanted to follow her husband to the forest, as Sita had followed Ram, but Lakshman begged her to stay back saying that he will be busy taking care of Ram and Sita and will have no time for her. He asked her to help him by staying back so that he did not feel guilty or anxious about his wife’s wellbeing. So Urmila stayed back, reluctantly, wondering how she could help her husband to help Ram.
On the first night in the forest, Lakshman kept watch while Ram and Sita went to sleep. That is when Nidra, the goddess of sleep, approached him. He begged the goddess to leave him alone for fourteen years so that he could guard his brother and sister-in-law night and day. The goddess, impressed by his act of filial devotion, agreed. But the law of nature demanded that someone bear the burden of Lakshmans share of sleep. “Go to my wife, Urmila, and inform her of the situation”, said Lakshman. Nidra went to Urmila. Urmila bowed her head and replied, “Give me my husband’s share of sleep for fourteen years so that he can stay awake all that time without any fatigue”. So it came to pass that Urmila slept for fourteen years night and day while her husband stayed awake in the service of Ram and Sita.
This had an impact in the war against Ravana. Ravana’s mighty son, Meghnadh, was invincible. Only a man who had not slept for 14 years could defeat him. Thus Lakshman was able to kill him, all thanks to Urmila.
The story of Urmila comes from folk Ramayanas or Ram-kathas and is not part of Valmiki’s Sanskrit narrative or Tulsi’s Avadhi narrative. But the way the story is presented, especially in the Ram Kathas of South India, is even more interesting. It reminds us how vast and
imaginative and provocative the tradition of Ramayana is in India, and how we are often deprived of this variety in our quest for uniformity.
After Rama defeats Ravan, rescues Sita and returns to Ayodhya, the day of Ram’s coronation dawns. As the hymns were being chanted and the crown is brought before Ram, Lakshman started to laugh, startling everyone.
Everyone wondered why was Lakshman laughing, who was he mocking? Every person in the court, Rama and Sita included, was consumed by doubts and guilt, for each was embarrassed of some misdeed in their life. Each one remembered an event in their life, which they were not particularly proud of, and felt Lakshman was laughing at them.
Finally someone asked Lakshman why he was laughing and he replied, I have waited for this moment for the past 14 years and just when I am about to witness Ram being crowned king, the goddess of sleep, Nidra, reminds me of our agreement 14 years ago, and demands that I submit to her this very moment, and go to sleep and let Urmila awaken. I find the irony of the situation hilarious. So Lakshman dozed and Urmila woke up to see Rama crowned king, and everyone heaved a sigh of relief.

Best Views From The Cockpit !!!

Patrick Smith, a pilot and author of Cockpit Confidential, reveals the most memorable sights from the sky.
On a typical 747 with four hundred passengers, a mere quarter of them will be lucky enough, if that’s the correct word, to be stationed at a window. In a ten-abreast block, only two of those seats come with a view. If flying has lost the ability to touch our hearts and minds, perhaps that’s part of the reason: there’s nothing to see anymore.
There’s something instinctively comforting about sitting at the window – a desire for orientation. Which way am I going? Has the sun risen or set yet? For lovers of air travel, of course, it’s more than that. To this day, the window is always my preference, even on the longest and most crowded flight. What I observe through the glass is no less a sensory moment, potentially, than what I’ll experience sightseeing later on. Traveling to Istanbul, for instance, I remember the sight of the ship-clogged Bosporus from 10,000 feet as vividly as I remember standing before the Süleymaniye Mosque or the Hagia Sofia.
For pilots, obviously, there isn’t much choice. We spend hours in what is essentially a small room walled with glass. Cockpit windows are surprisingly large, and although there’s often little to see except fuzzy gray cirrus or pitch – blackness, the panorama they provide is occasionally spectacular.

New York City
The arrival patterns into LaGuardia will sometimes take you along the Hudson River at low altitude, skirting the western edge of Manhattan and offering a breathtaking vista of the New York skyline – that “quartz porcupine,” as Vonnegut termed it.

Shooting stars (especially during the annual, late-summer Perseids meteor shower)
Most impressive are the ones that linger on the horizon for several seconds, changing color as they burrow into the atmosphere. I’ve seen shooting stars so bright they were visible even in daylight.

The Northern Lights
At its most vivid, the aurora borealis has to be seen to be believed. And you needn’t traipse to the Yukon or Siberia; the most dazzling display I’ve ever witnessed was on a flight between Detroit and New York. The heavens had become an immense, quivering, horizon–wide curtain of fluorescence, like God’s laundry flapping in the night sky.

Flying into Africa
I love the way the Cap Vert peninsula and the city of Dakar appear on the radar screen, perfectly contoured like some great rocky fishhook – the westernmost tip of the continent, and the sense of arrival and discovery it evokes. There it is, Africa! And further inland, the topography of Mali and Niger. From 30,000 feet, the scrubby Sahel looks exactly like 40-grade sandpaper, sprayed lightly green and spattered with villages – each a tiny star with red clay roads radiating outward.

The eerie, flickering orange glow of the Venezuelan oil fields — an apocalyptic vista that makes you feel like a B-17 pilot in 1945.

Similar, but more depressing, are the thousands of slash-and-burn fires you’ll see burning throughout the Amazon. Some of the fire fronts are miles long – walls of red flame chewing through the forests.

Compensating for the above are the vast, for-now untouched forests of Northeastern South America. Over Guyana in particular the view is like nothing else in the world – an expanse of primeval green as far as the eye can see. No towns, no roads, no clear-cutting or fires. For now.

Climbing out over the “tablecloth” – the cloud deck that routinely drapes itself over Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa.

The frozen, midwinter oblivion of Northeastern Canada. I love passing over the jaggedy, end-of-the-world remoteness of Newfoundland, Labrador, and Northern Quebec in midwinter – a gale-thrashed nether-region of boulders, forests, and frozen black rivers.

The majestic, primordial nothingness of Greenland. The great circle routes between the United States and Europe will sometimes take you over Greenland. It might be just a brush of the southern tip, but other times it’s forty-five minutes across the meatier vistas of the interior. If you’ve got a window seat, do not miss the opportunity to steal a peek, even if it means splashing your fast-asleep seatmate with sunshine.

Other views aren’t spectacle so much as just peculiar…
One afternoon we were coasting in from Europe, about 200 miles east of Halifax, Nova Scotia. “Gander Center,” I called in. “Got time for a question?”
“Yeah, go ahead.”
“Do you have any idea what the name of that strange little island is that we just passed over?”
“Sure do,” said the man in Gander. “That’s Sable Island.”
Sable Island is one of the oddest places I’ve ever seen from aloft. The oceans are full of remote islands, but Sable’s precarious isolation makes it especially peculiar. It’s a tiny, ribbony crescent of sand, almost Bahamian in shape and texture, all alone against the relentless North Atlantic. It’s like a fragment of a submerged archipelago—-a miniature island that has lost its friends.
“Island,” maybe, is being generous. Sable is really nothing more than a sand bar, a sinewy splinter of dunes and grass – 26 miles long and only a mile wide – lashed and scraped by surf and wind. How staggeringly vulnerable it appears from 38,000 feet.
I’d flown over Sable many times and had been meaning to ask about it. Only later did I learn that the place has been “the subject of extensive scientific research,” according to one website, “and of numerous documentary films, books, and magazine articles.” Most famously, it’s the home of 250 or so wild horses. Horses have been on Sable since the late eighteenth century, surviving on grass and fresh water ponds. Transient visitors include grey seals and up to 300 species of birds. Human access is tightly restricted. The only permanent dwelling is a scientific research station staffed by a handful of people.

But all right, okay, enough with the terrestrial stuff. I know that some of you are wondering about UFOs. This is something I’m asked about all the time. For the record, I have never seen one, and I have never met another pilot who claims to have seen one. Honestly, the topic is one that almost never comes up, even during those long, dark flights across the ocean. Musings about the vastness of the universe are one thing, but I cannot recall ever having had a conversation with a colleague about UFOs specifically. Neither have I seen the topic discussed in any industry journal or trade publication.
I once received an email asking me about a supposed “tacit agreement” between pilots that says we will not openly discuss UFO sightings out of fear of embarrassment and, as the emailer put it, “possible career suicide.” I had to laugh at the notion of there being a tacit agreement among pilots over anything, let alone flying saucers. And although plenty of things in aviation are tantamount to career suicide, withholding information about UFOs isn’t one of them.

In 2011, a poll by the website PrivateFly.com revealed travellers’ favourite airports to land at. Barra Island in the Outer Hebrides – with its unique beach runway – came out on top.

London City Airport (pictured), Jackson Hole, Aruba, Male, St Barts, Queenstown, Gibraltar, Narvik and St Maarten completed the top 10.

Paro Airport, in the Himalayan country of Bhutan, is regularly named among the scariest airports to land at. It is located in a deep valley, and landing involves negotiating a series of mountains, rapid descents and then a steep bank to the left. Only a handful of pilots are certified to land there.

Other scary touch-downs include Matekane in Lesotho, Saba in the Caribbean, Tenzing-Hillary airport in Lukla, Nepal, Funchal in Madeira, and Courchevel.

Google Glass in an Operation Theatre @ Chennai !!!!
“Can you see me? Can you see what I’m doing here?” the surgeon asks from inside the theatre. For the record, that’s not quite the way conversation goes in an operation theatre. The surgeon’s usually concerned about what he can see.

The Google Glass enters the operation theatre. Photo: Ramya Kannan
As far as medical procedures go, this was quite ordinary. But there was a guest in the theatre on Tuesday, perched pretty on the bridge of the surgeon’s nose. J.S. Rajkumar, surgical gastroenterologist, and chairman, Lifeline Hospitals, had brought in a piece of the future, for the very first time, reportedly, into an Indian operation theatre. He was wearing the Google Glass.
As the surgeon went in through three port holes to correct gastro oesophageal reflux disease, the Google Glass saw exactly what he did and transmitted a video live, onto a remote location.
Literature shows that twice before, the Google Glass has been within operating theatres. The first surgery with the Glass happened in June in Spain, and the second, in August in Ohio. When the Google Glass was switched on inside Lifeline Hospital’s operation theatre, it was a first in the country, and only the third time in the world that it had sat with surgeons.
Google Glass is a wearable mini computer that sits as its moniker indicates, like a pair of spectacles, except there is only one neat quadrangle prism just above your level of vision over the right eye. A touch screen, the processor and battery are compacted, nearly unbelievably, in the right arm of the part of the glass that rests on the ear. So switch on the device by tapping the touch screen, say “OK, Glass” and then tell it what you want to do: Take a photo; take a video; ask for directions; or just search on Google. Entirely hands free, this genie bows to your voice. It is so seamless, it seems nearly like magic.
Built quintessentially as a tool for social media, the Google Glass allows for instant sharing of the photo/ video you’ve just taken. “It runs on an android processor and you can hook it up to any android device- a mobile phone or a tab. The video can be streamed on any chat site that allows multimedia content, say like Google Hangout,” explains Shiva Thirumazhusai, CEO, Nasotech, the U.S.-based start up that is creating customised apps for the Glass.
So, how did Dr. Rajkumar get hold of the limited edition Google Glass, being rationed out by Google at about $1700. Mr. Shiva says he runs a Google Developers Group in the U.S., and had registered for the Glass a year ago. He was among the first to get it in hand, when Google started shipping them out in May. An old friendship with the surgeon, and Dr. Rajkumar’s own interest in using the device in the theatre, led to the debut for Google Glass in Chennai.
“Whichever way you look at it, it is an amazing device for surgeons. If you are there in the theatre and you have a hitch, you could search for a video about the procedure and clarify what’s happening. Specialists across the world can merely wear this light-weight glass and advise a young surgeon in a remote town on how to go on,” Dr. Rajkumar says. It can also enable relatives of the patient sitting across the world to catch up with the surgery live, and as for eager medical students, the implications are huge.
Nasotech has already added some customisations. For instance, while Google Glass will allow you to take only 10-second videos, the one that was used on Tuesday has virtually no limit on video time. Mr. Shiva says they are working on connecting the Glass with hospital information systems, so that at a command, the patient’s history comes up on the visual layer.
Broadband speeds being perfidious in the best of circumstances in this country, the video from a second hernia surgery did not quite reach the viewing room. Dr. Rajkumar says, “That’s the only thing: if cost and connectivity are in favour, the Google Glass can transform health care access in this country. Isn’t it exciting?” You bet!

Where Humans , Snakes Coexist Peacefully !!!!

Paambu kulam in Vellammal’s backyard at Maruthur in Vedharanyam
A pond built by a hutment dweller venerates the guardian deity and the snakes that inhabit a grove
Beneath the dark shade of the wooded Wodier grove is a stone structure of Veeran, the guardian deity of the hutments of Velliammal and her three sons.
Modestly decorated with specks of vermilion, Veeran is seated a stone’s throwaway from the Velliammal hutments — a cluster of three huts and the Paambu Kulam (snake pond) that fringes her backyard. The paambu kulam or the snake pond has been in existence for close to 28 years, says Velliammal.
In these times of human-animal conflict, Velliammal’s snake pond in Marudhur village, some 20 km from Vedaranyam, represents a tale of ecological harmony and coexistence between humans and the snakes that frequent their houses.
The snake pond is Velliammal’s way of venerating Veeran and the snakes that inhabit his wooded grove. For, it is on the temple lands of Veeran that the hutments are situated, she says. “Where will the snakes go to quench their thirst? So, the kulam was dug so that they do not stray.”
Each year, the family of farm-wage labourers spends some money to desilt and deepen the pond so that the snakes can come and quench their thirst. They do not step into the pond unless it is full to the brim. Velliammal believes that the snakes guard not just Veeran but also her property. Her anecdotal references attest to her belief. “The household objects may lie around, and on several occasions, a snake will be guarding my property. No outsider can cross over or touch the objects,” she says.
There is the problem of peacocks in the fields that the snakes are pushed to human habitations, says Rani, Velliammal’s daughter-in law, whose hut is fully thatched from the roof to the walls. Snakes have no place to go, and the pond is necessary. When the pond is dry, the women pump just enough water into the pond from the lift pump for the snakes to drink from. Within the space of the bamboo fenced hutment, Velliammal rears goats, pigeons, a cow and a dog.
The women of the household will do nothing that may offend the gods and snakes that live around the Veeran temple. “We do not even wash our hands in the pond during our menstrual cycle. That will be an affront to the snakes,” says Rani.

Highest Altitude Civilian Airport In the World !!!

AT 4411m above sea level, a new airport in a mountainous Tibetan village sits about halfway to the cruising altitude of most commercial planes.
The Daocheng Yading Airport was opened in China on Monday, becoming the highest-altitude civilian airport in the world.
The airport is in Garzi, a restive and remote Tibetan region of south-western Sichuan province.

The first planes touch down at the world’s highest altitude airport.
It will cut journey times from the provincial capital of Chengdu from a two-day drive to a little more than an hour in the air.
The 1.58 billion yuan ($258 million) airport, designed to handle 280,000 passengers a year, will help open up the nearby Yading Nature Reserve to tourism, the official Xinhua news agency said, referring to an area renowned for its untouched natural beauty.
