Message For the Day….” Difference Between Happiness and Bliss…”

Happiness generally relates to bodily comforts and is transient. Such temporary pleasure comes to us for a few moments but very soon plunges us into deep sorrow. But the kind of bliss that one gets through the Soul (Atma) is permanent, pure and selfless. Hence spiritual education (Brahma Vidya)advocates that love must be cultivated for love’s sake only. You must not express love to merely obtain material benefits. If love is showered to win temporary benefits, then it will last for a very short time only. Divine Atmasymbolises eternal truth and is permanent. Therefore Prema attached to Atmawill be true and permanent. This infinite love and eternal truth is present in every being (jīva). If we focus on developing love and truth for its own sake, then we will experience bliss supreme. That is why the Upanishads advocate Selfless Love as ‘Satyasya satyaṃ’ or the Truth of truths.

How an 11 Year old Girl got to Name the Planet Pluto … !!!

An 11-year-old British girl is responsible naming the planet Pluto, the once ninth planet of our solar system, after her grandfather read about the dwarf planet’s discovery at the family breakfast table.

pluto

The girl, Venetia Burney, recalled the event in an interview with NASA in 2006,

Venetia_Burney

“I think it was on March the 14th, 1930 and I was having breakfast with my mother and my grandfather. And my grandfather read out at breakfast the great news and said he wondered what it would be called. And for some reason, I after a short pause, said, “Why not call it Pluto?” I did know, I was fairly familiar with Greek and Roman legends from various children’s books that I had read, and of course I did know about the solar system and the names the other planets have. And so I suppose I just thought that this was a name that hadn’t’t been used. And there it was. The rest was entirely my grandfather’s work.”

Burney’s grandfather, Falconer Madan, the ex-head librarian at the Bodleian at Oxford, was so pleased by his granddaughter’s proposed name that he suggested it to Herbert Hall Turner, a retired astronomer who held the title of Astronomer Royal.

Turner immediately wired the idea to American astronomers at Lowell Observatory. The planet was officially named a in May 1930.

Despite many rumors that Burney named the planet Pluto after the Greek god of the underworld or that the first two letter “PL” are in honor of Percival Lowell, the founder of Lowell Observatory, Burney seems to have named the planet Pluto because it sounded good to her. “I just thought it was a name that hadn’t been used so far, and might be an obvious one to have,” Burney told NASA.

There was also a rumor that the planet was named after Pluto the dog because both, the cartoon and the planet, came out in 1930. However, Pluto the dog was originally named Rover in 1930. It wasn’t until 1931 that the beloved cartoon dog took the name Pluto, meaning that the dog took the name of the planet.

Joke for the Day…

An old man decides to go into town one day to run some errands. On the way back, his wife calls his cell phone.

“Look out honey, I just saw on the news that there’s a car driving the wrong way on the interstate.”

“Not just one car, they all are!”

………………………………………

After a hard day of drilling, the drill sergeant let the troops go.

“All right, you idiots, report to the mess hall.”

Everybody walked away, sweating and their heads down, thankful for the end of the hard day.

Only one private remained.

He looked at the officer and sincerely said, “Boy, there sure were a lot of them, huh, sarge.”

Have you Heard about these Aircraft Designs … ?

The 20th century saw an amazing array of new vehicles – from cars to ships to submarines and airplanes. Some of these designs are still used today, their basic premise being so dead on. However, some designs were less than ideal, and what follows are the aircraft designs that just weren’t as good as the rest, but are still fascinating to see. Enjoy this collection of strangely designed planes.

joke of the Day… ” I took a Photo …” !!!

My wife said she wanted to see 50 Shades of Grey.

So I took a photo of her hair!

…………………….

While stitching a cut on the hand of a 75-year-old farmer, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.

Eventually the topic got around to politicians and their role as our leaders.

The old farmer said, “Well, as I see it, most politicians are ‘Post Tortoises’.”

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post tortoise’ was.

The old farmer said, “When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on top, that’s a post tortoise.”

The old farmer saw the puzzled look on the doctor’s face so he continued to explain.

“You know he didn’t get up there by himself,

he doesn’t belong up there,

he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there,

he’s elevated beyond his ability to function,

and you just wonder what kind of idiot put him up there to begin with.”

A Frozen Niagara Falls …. Now a Winter Wonderland !!!

Frozen niagra falls

Frigid temperatures and wicked wind chills have been ravaging the northeast over the past week and the prolonged below-freezing temperatures have turned Niagara Falls into a winter wonderland.

The above image shows the American side of the famous falls on Tuesday when temperatures dropped to 6 degrees Fahrenheit around the Great Lakes. The American side of the Niagara Falls is much more likely to freeze than the more iconic shoehorn-shaped Canadian side.

Still, the American side is far from frozen solid. Water is still flowing, but layers of ice sheets have built up around the water.

The crazy temperatures haven’t kept tourists away. Last year when the falls partially froze, the site got more visitors than any other winter day on record, according to USA Today.

Frozen niagra fallsTourists visit the frozen falls on Feb. 17.

The sheer volume and speed of the water plummeting over the falls makes it impossible to completely freeze over. However, the mist that constantly wafts up from the rushing water can freeze into sheets of ice during the winter. Those ice sheets combined with frozen slush flowing down from Lake Eerie can make the falls look frozen:

Here’s what the American side of the falls looks like when it’s not frozen over:

Bitter cold temperatures over President’s Day weekend also froze the Bryant Park fountain in New York City. Central Park hovered around 3 degrees — the coldest it’s been in over a decade.

Message For the Day…” Read Good Books and Practice What You Read…”

Books and facilities for mind-training are available in plenty, and at very cheap prices. The heaps of books that lie around cannot succeed in penetrating the heavy binding and emerge as light in you. For, just as God is hidden by the mountain ranges of lust, anger, envy, and selfishness within, the sun of wisdom is also hidden in the books. Though books and reading habits have spread to all corners of the earth, we can’t say that culture or wisdom has increased; the human is still not far from the ape. An attractive binding, title and beautiful pictures are what the reader seeks; these are transitory pleasures which give momentary contentment. Aimless reading of all and sundry books will confuse you and confer no peace. Hence discriminate, select and read books that contain life histories of saints and sages, and those that aid in the contemplation of the Divine. Practice what you read. Then you will realise truth and enjoy everlasting bliss.

Joke of the Day… “Shakespeare’s Seat … ” !!!

My grandparents were taking me on a vacation to Disneyland. Grandma was excited for me when we boarded the plane, she exclaimed that I was lucky, because I got the Shakespeare seat.

“Why is it the Shakespeare seat Grandma?”

“You are in seat 2-B, so it’s the Shakespeare seat.”

“Don’t be silly Grandma. All the seats on an airplane are Shakespeare seats.”

“How do you figure that?”

“Well, it’s either seat 2-B or not 2-B.”  !!!
