” நான் தான் அவனைத் திருட சொன்னேன் ….!!! “

ஒரு சமயம், காஞ்சி மகாபெரியவர், சிவகங்கை மாவட்டம் இளையாத்தங்குடியில் சாதுர்மாஸ்ய விரதம் அனுஷ்டிக்க முகாமிட்டிருந்தார்.

ஒருநாள் இரவில், தேவகோட்டையில் இருந்து, ஒரு பஸ் நிறைய மக்கள் அவ்வூருக்கு வந்தார்கள். ஆண்களும், பெண்களும், குழந்தைகளுமாய் ஏகமாய் சத்தம் கேட்க, பெரியவர் அங்கிருந்த கஜானா ராமச்சந்திர அய்யரை அழைத்து, “”வெளியே நிறைய பேர் வந்திருக்கிறார்கள் போல் தெரிகிறது. யாரென்று பார்த்து வா…” என்றவர், அவரை நிறுத்தி, “”அவர்களெல்லாம் சாப்பிட்டு விட்டார்களா என்று விசாரித்து வா,” என்றார்.

அவரும் விசாரித்து வந்தார்.

“சுவாமி! அவர்கள் தேவகோட்டையில் இருந்து வருகிறார்களாம். அவர்கள் வந்த பஸ், வழியில் ரிப்பேராகி விட்டதால், தாமதமாக வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். யாரும் சாப்பிடவில்லையாம்,’ என்றார்.

“”ராமச்சந்திரா! வெளியே பூஜைக்கட்டில் மேலூர் மாமா படுத்திருப்பார். அவர் பக்கத்தில் கட்டுப்பெட்டி சாவி கிடக்கும். நீ சந்தடி செய்யாமல் அதை எடுத்துப்போய் பெட்டியைத் திறந்து, அதிலுள்ள பழங்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் எடுத்துப் போய், அவர்களிடம் கொடு. நாளை அபிஷேகத்திற்காக தயிர், பால் வைத்திருப்பார். எல்லாவற்றையும் எடுத்துக் கொண்டு போய், அவர்களை சாப்பிட வை. பிறகு, சந்தடி செய்யாமல், சாவியை இருந்த இடத்திலேயே வைத்து விடு,” என்று சொல்லி விட்டு உறங்கச் சென்று விட்டார்.

மறுநாள் விடிந்தது. மேலூர் ராமச்சந்திர அய்யர் கட்டுப்பெட்டியை திறந்தார். உள்ளே பழம், தயிர், பால் எதுவும் இல்லை. அவருக்கு கோபம் வந்து விட்டது.

“”எந்த திருட்டுப்பயலோ, ராத்திரி மறுசாவி போட்டு பெட்டியைத் திறந்து, பழங்களை எடுத்துப் போயிருக்கிறான்,” என்று மிகவும் சத்தமாகக் கத்தினார்.

அப்போது, பக்கத்து ரூமில் தான் பெரியவர் இருந்தார். அவர் அங்கிருந்து வந்து, “”அய்யர்வாள்! நான் தான் கஜானா ராமச்சந்திரன் என்ற திருடனுக்கு உடந்தையாக இருந்து, அவனைத் திருடச் சொன்னேன்,” என்றார்.

அய்யர் அலறாத குறை தான். “”பெரியவா! மன்னிச்சுடுங்கோ” என்று அவரது பாதங்களில் சாஷ்டாங்கமாக விழுந்து நமஸ்கரித்தார்.

பூஜைக்கான பொருள் என்றாலும், அவசரம் கருதி, அது மக்களின் பசி தீர்க்க உதவுமானால், அதற்கே முதலிடம் என்ற கொள்கையுடைய மகாசுவாமிகள், கருணாமூர்த்தியாக நம் கண்முன் இன்றும் காட்சி தருகிறார்.

” தமிழில்தான் பேசணும் …தமிழ் பேச்சை மறக்க கூடாது …”

நடு வயது தம்பதிகள். நான்கு குழந்தைகள். எல்லாம் நவீன ஆடை – அலங்காரம்; நவீனத் தோற்றம். பெண் குழந்தைகளுக்கு கழுத்து வரை மட்டும் கூந்தல் – எல்லையோர செடிகளை, இடுப்பளவு உயரத்துக்கு மேல் வளராதபடி கத்திரிகோலால் வெட்டி விட்ட மாதிரி; நுனி நாக்கில் ஆங்கிலம் விளையாடியது. கான்வென்ட் படிப்பு.

பெரியவா, அந்த குழந்தைகளை தன் அருகில் வரச்சொன்னார்கள். வந்தன. “பேரென்ன? எங்கே படிக்கிறே? என்று விசாரணையாய் உரையாடல்.

குழந்தைகள் ரொம்ப சகஜமாகி விட்டன; உற்சாகமாக, தயக்கமில்லாமல் பதில் சொல்லி கொண்டிருந்தன.

அருகில் இருந்த பழத்தட்டை காட்டி, ‘யாருக்கு என்ன பழம் வேணுமோ எடுத்துக்கலாம்’ என்று சொன்னர்கள்.

குழந்தைகளுக்கு ரொம்ப சந்தோஷம்.

Thanks – என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு பழங்களை எடுத்துகொண்டன.

பெரியவா சொன்னார்கள்” “ஒரு request நான் சொன்ன கேட்பேளா?”

ஒரே குரலில், “Oh yes! certainly we will do” என்று குழந்தைகள் கூறின.

‘வெளி இடத்திலே, பள்ளிகூடத்திலே அல்லது வேறு மனுஷ்யாளிடத்தில் பேசறபோது இங்கிலீஷ்லே பேசு. உங்க வீட்டிலே, அப்பா – அம்மா, சுவமிகளா இருக்கிற நான்; அப்புறம், பகவான் இவாளிடம் தயவு பண்ணி தமிழிலே தான் பேசணும். தமிழ் தாய்மொழி. தாய் தான் முதல் கடவுள். தமிழ் பேச்சை மறக்க கூடாது.”

குழந்தைகள். ‘இனிமே அப்பா – அம்மா , குரு, தெய்வத்துகிட்டே தமிழிலேயே பேசறோம். Promise!’ என்றன.

பெரியவா முகத்தில் கோடி சூர்ய பிரகாசம். மகா பண்டிதர்களுடன் அத்வைத விசாரம் பண்ணும்போது பளீரிடும் ஒளியை காட்டிலும் நூறு மடங்கு பிரகாசம்!

Wello started off as a social venture with the mission of providing clean water to everyone. They have launched several business models that encourages people to use the WaterWheel to lift their lives and families out of poverty. Especially in rural nations, where lives depend on water more than anything. One billion people don’t have direct access to water. This means that they have to travel at least 1/2 a mile for a safe water source. As many know, women usually carry clay pots on their heads or by their waist. To get a sufficient amount of water, it is very heavy.

Cynthia Koenig and her team spent 12 months developing a prototype for what is called the WaterWheel.

It is noted that the WaterWheel has several benefits.

  • It is high quality and durable. Because it has to endure several terrains, it is manufactured from safe plastics that last a long time.
  • It’s hygienic. The cap design prevents contamination and it reduces diarrheal disease, which is a major cause of death in infants.
  • It’s affordable. Most of the people that need the WaterWheel don’t have the resource to pay for it, therefore Wello has developed an innovative business model that enables Wello to offer the WaterWheel at a low cost.
  • It’s convenient. The WaterWheel can transport 50L at once at a fast pace which means that more water in less time.
  • It’s aesthetically pleasing. The WaterWheel is in the shape of the traditional “matka”, the utensil for carrying water, so women will feel comfortable carrying it around.

 


By giving people access to water, the WaterWheel frees up time for women and removes the burdens that prevent children from going to school. This boosts family income, health, education, and general wellbeing. This will break the cycle of poverty. Innovation is key.

Surreal Photography Using Only a Film Camera.
Oleg Oprisco has loved fairy-tales and other-worldly stories all her life. As a photographer, living in Lviv, Ukraine, she creates surreal images. But unlike many other surreal artists, she doesn’t use any digital manipulation, indeed, she uses nothing but an old film camera.  That means all you see in these photos is real, and had to be set up. These days, digital photography has diminished the use of ‘setting up a shot’ like this, and it’s a shame, because in my opinion it comes out beautifully.

1971-ஆம் வருடம். மகா பெரியவாள் தஞ்சையில் முகாம். நாள்தோறும் கல்யாணம் வைபோகம் தான்!.

சாரி சாரியாக (ஆமாம், புடவை புடவையாக தான்) பெண்கள்.

சுவாசினீ பூஜை என்ற திருநாள் அன்றைக்கு.

சுமங்கலிகளுக்கு காமாட்சி அம்மன் திருவுருவம் பொறித்த பொற்காசு ஒன்றை, ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அருளுகிறார் பெரியவாள். புடவை தலைப்பை நீட்டி, இரு நுனிகளையும் இரு கைகளால் பிடித்துகொண்டு, அந்த அம்மன் காசை அருளாளரிடமிருந்து பெற்று கொண்டு நகர்ந்து செல்கிறார்கள் மாதரிசிகள்.

அந்த பெண்மணியின் புடவை தலைப்பிலும் பொற்காசு வந்து விழுகிறது. நகர்ந்து சென்று கையில் எடுக்கிறார் – பார்கிறார் – வியக்கிறார்.

இரண்டு காசுகள்…!

என்ன அதிர்ஷ்டம்! இரண்டு பொற்காசுகள்…!

தாமாகவே வந்தவை. திருடினேனா என்ன…? வேறு யாருக்கும் தெரியும்…?

மங்கையர் திலகத்துக்கு மாசுபடியாத மனம்.

பெரியவாளிடம் வந்து, அடக்க ஒடுக்கமாக நின்றார்.

“என்ன?” என்று ஒரு பார்வை, பெரியவாளிடமிருந்து.

“என் புடைவையில் இரண்டு காசு வந்திருக்கு.. எல்லோருக்கும் ஒண்ணுதானே ..? அதான்.. இன்னொண்ணை…” 

பெரியவாள் திருவதனத்தில் மந்தகாசம் மலர்ந்தது.

“ஒண்ணு உனக்கு.. இன்னொண்ணு உன் வயிற்றில் இருக்கிற குழந்தைக்கு..!

அட, அப்படியா?

நான் கருவுற்றிருப்பதை பெரியவாளிடம் யாரும் சொல்லவில்லையே… பெரியவாள் எதிரில் அரைவிநாடி நேரம்தானே நின்றிருப்பேன்…

அப்புறம் என்ன?

ஏழு மாதங்களுக்கு பின் இரட்டை குழந்தைகள்.

அம்மணியின் பேறு காலம் பெரும் பேறு காலம்!

குழந்தைகளுக்கு கர்ப்பவாசம், சொர்கவாசம்!

கணேச – சுப்பராமன்களான இரட்டையர்க்கு, பெரியவாள் தான் உலகம்.

பால சந்யாசி ஆதிசங்கரர், சுவர்ண நெல்லிகனிகளை வரவழைத்து கொடுத்தார். மகா பெரியவாள் தம் கையாலேயே பொற்காசுகளை வழங்கினார்கள்.

Imaginative Photos Of Toy Plane Soaring in the Sky !!!

Macau-based web designer and developer Varun Thota (@vnthota) has an Instagram feed full of photos depicting dynamic metropolitan life, but his series My Toy Plane (#mytoyplane) takes his creative vision to new heights. The imaginative photos show a hand guiding a toy airplane overhead in various locations. If it weren’t for the hand, the images would be quite convincing as shots of a real plane soaring in the sky, flying over tall buildings, or preparing to land on a runway.

What makes Thota’s photos even more fun to look at are the glimpses of urban life in Macau, Hong Kong, and other bustling cities in Asia. His toy plane weaves in between tall skyscrapers, over lively streets, and above vibrant downtown bays, taking the viewer on a mini-voyage of their own. Looking at the creative shots, you can almost imagine yourself sitting in the plane itself, gazing down at the beautiful sights below.

Drawing inspiration from the hashtag #putaplaneonit, Thota decided to start this series after his father found a toy plane inside a chocolate Kinder egg. Through the photos, he not only gets to explore his interest in aviation, but also to build relationships with the people around him. He says, “The thing I enjoy most about the series is how fun it is to include other people in it. It’s always fun to show people the plane, tell them the story and then ask them for a helping hand in taking the shot.”

Taxis are now available in your city at the touch of an icon on your smartphone

Driver Nickson is on his way from Nungambakkam in a Ford Endeavour. He is 21 minutes away. No, 19.  The car-shaped icon moves like an ant on the smartphone’s screen as time ticks by. It tells us exactly where the taxi is at which point in time. He glides to a stop as one watches him on the screen. The taxi is here — the entire process happened at the touch of an app on the smartphone. Call taxis, these days, don’t require a ‘call’ for you to avail their service. All you have to do is download an app. Companies such as Uber, Ola, and Meru put you in touch with their drivers through a well-coordinated system that involves the GPS.

The Uber app for instance, can be downloaded onto Android phones and iPhones (it is not available for Windows phones). The taxi can be booked by just tapping on the icon; the nearest Uber driver is informed of your location and so are you. Before you know it, your taxi is booked — the app lets you monitor the driver’s location on Google maps, displays his name, and the car’s registration number.

“Uber’s specialty is on-the-spot booking,” says Nickson. “You can book your cab while you’re on the move.” And there is no cash involved — once you register with Uber, the bill amount is debited from your credit card. The best thing regarding Uber is their cars — Honda Civic, Accord, Toyota Camry, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar. Launched in the city in January this year, Uber is the next big thing in taxis.

“Welcome to Meru. Your billing has started,” announces a mechanised voice as one enters a Meru taxi. “It’s the Tab,” points out driver Samuel David. “All of our cabs come fitted with Tabs. We use them to monitor the meter.” The Tab displays the start time, customer’s name, and drop location. “We have 60 cars running in the city; we launched a month ago,” explains Samuel. The Meru app works in a similar way; it is available on Google Play, App Store, and Windows Store.

Ola Cabs, yet another new line of taxis, are also available at a single touch — the app is available on App Store and Google Play. “There is no confusion regarding the client’s location. Once they book a cab, I get to know their location through GPS,” says driver K.N. Gopinath.

Despite it all, these taxis are priced nominally. Which is why, “these days, even people who own cars take taxis to be dropped off and picked up from the airport,” according to Gopinath. They are also widely used by women who go pubbing late night. “On Fridays and weekends, our customers are mostly couples and party-goers who prefer us for our luxury cabs,” says Nickson.

“We also have the option of card payment,” adds Samuel. Meru has strict rules for its drivers. Displayed on the dashboard is an oath that has lines such as ‘I will not drink and drive’, ‘I will charge the customer as per the meter’, and ‘I will be alert at all times’. “There is just one word I don’t understand,” says Samuel as the car zooms through Anna Salai. “What does ‘groom’ mean? We are repeatedly told to be well-groomed.” Just then, the taxi pulls up at our destination and the mechanised voice calls out: “Thank you for using Meru.”

” குழப்பம் வேண்டாம் ….இனிமேல் கவலை இல்லை … “

காஞ்சி சங்கர மடத்தில், ஒரு மாலை வேளை…மகா பெரியவரைத் தரிசிக்க ஏகக்கூட்டம் கூடியிருந்தது.

அப்போது, அவரது பார்வையில் 20 வயது மதிக்கத்தக்க இளைஞர் தென்பட்டார்.

அவரையே வைத்த கண் வாங்காமல் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்த பெரியவர், தனக்கு பணிவிடை செய்து கொண்டிருந்த ராமு என்ற இளைஞரை அழைத்து, “”கியூவிலே பதினைந்தாவது ஆசாமியா நிக்கிறானே ஒரு புள்ளையாண்டான்! அவன் சைசுக்கு சரியா இருக்கிறாப்லே ஒரு சட்டை, பேண்ட்துணி வாங்கிட்டு வா! அதுக்குரிய பணத்தை ஆபீசிலே வாங்கிண்டு போ! பக்கத்திலே இருக்கிற முதலியார் ஜவுளிக்கடையில் துணி எடுத்துண்டு வா!” என்றார்.

ராமுவுக்கு பெரியவர் ஏன் இப்படி சொல்கிறார் என்ற விபரம் புரியவில்லை. ஆனாலும், 15 நிமிடங்களுக்குள் துணிமணியுடன் வந்து நின்றார். துணிமணிகளைப் பார்த்த பெரியவர், “”பேஷ்! பேஷ்! நன்னா இருக்குடா!” என்று பாராட்டி விட்டு, “”நீ உடனே போய், ஒரு மூங்கில் தட்டில் நெறயபழங்கள், பூர்ண பலம் (மட்டைத் தேங்காய்) எல்லாம் எடுத்து வச்சுண்டு, இந்த துணிமணிகளை அதுமேலே வச்சுடு. நான் சொன்னேன்னு சொல்லி, மடத்து மேனேஜர் கிட்டே 6250 ரூபாயை ஒரு கவர்ல போட்டு, அதையும் தட்டுலே வச்சுடு. என்ன பண்ணணுங்கிறதே அப்புறமா சொல்றேன்!” என்றார்.

இதற்குள் அந்த இளைஞர் சுவாமிகள் முன் வந்து விட்டார். பெரியவர் அவனை ஏறிட்டுப் பார்த்தார். ராமுவை அழைத்து, “”அந்த மூங்கில் தட்டை அவன் கையிலே கொடு.

அந்தப் பையனுக்கும், அவன் குடும்பத்துக்கும் நான் பூர்ண ஆசிர்வாதம் பண்றதா சொல்லு,” என்று இன்முகத்துடன் கட்டளையிட்டார்.

அதன்படி, தட்டை அவன் கையில் ராமு கொடுக்க, அவன் குழப்பத்துடன் நின்றான்.

“”ராமு! அவன் ரொம்ப குழம்பியிருக்கான். குழப்பம் ஏதும் வேண்டாம். அவன் வீட்டிலே பணத்தை பத்திரமா ஒப்படைக்கச் சொல்லு!” என்றார் பெரியவர்.

இளைஞரும் ஏதும் புரியாமல் தட்டுடன் கிளம்பி விட்டார்.

அவரைப் போல குழம்பி நின்ற ராமுவிடம் பெரியவர்,””ராமு! ரொம்ப வருஷத்துக்கு முன்னாடி நடந்த சம்பவம் இது. அப்போ, நம்ம மடத்துக்கு ரொம்ப சிரமமான காலம். அப்போ, ஒரு ஆறுமாசம் நான் வடதேசத்துக்கு யாத்திரை கிளம்பினேன். மடத்து வாசலுக்கு வந்தேன். எதிர்த்தாப்புலே ஒரு செட்டியார் மளிகைக்கடை வச்சிருந்தார். மடத்துக்கு அங்க தான் மளிகை சாமான்கள் பற்று வரவு கணக்கு. வாசல்ல என்னைப் பார்த்ததும், செட்டியார் வேகமா ஓடி வந்தார்.

“என்ன செட்டியார்வாள்! சவுக்கியமா? வியாபாரம் எல்லாம் எப்படி போகுதுன்னு விசாரிச்சேன்! அவர் வாயைப் பொத்திண்டு பவ்யமா, “சுமாரா போறது சுவாமி! கஷ்டமாத்தான் இருக்கு! பெரியவா வடதேசம் போவதாவும், திரும்ப அஞ்சாறு மாசம் ஆகும்னும் சொன்னாங்க!’ என்று மென்னு விழுங்கினார். பிறகு, “நாலஞ்சு மாசமா மடத்து மளிகை பாக்கி அப்படியே நிலுவைல இருக்கு! எனக்கும் கஷ்டம்! அதனாலே, உங்ககிட்ட குறையைச் சொல்லிக்கிறேன்,’ என்றார்.

ஆறுமாதம் கழித்து வந்து பார்த்தால் கடை பூட்டியிருந்துச்சு! விசாரித்ததிலே, செட்டியார் மூணு மாசத்துக்கு முன்னாடி திடீர்னு காலகதி அடைஞ்சுட்டதா சொன்னா! அவரோட மனுஷாள்ளாம் எங்கே இருக்கான்னும் தெரியலே. அதற்கப்புறம் பாக்கி எவ்வளவுன்னு தெரிஞ்சு வச்சுண்டேன்! எண்ணூத்தி எழுபத்தஞ்சு முக்கால் ரூவா! அந்த பாக்கியை இன்னைக்கு தான் வட்டியும் முதலுமா தீர்த்து வச்சேன்! அந்த பையன் வேறு யாருமில்லே!

செட்டியாரோட பிள்ளை வயித்து பேரன். தாத்தாவுக்கு சேர வேண்டியதை, பேரன் கிட்ட அசலும் வட்டியுமா சேர்ப்பித்தாச்சு!

இனிமே கவலை இல்லை!” என்றார்.

பெரியவர் செய்த இந்த கைங்கர்யம் நம் எல்லாருக்கும் ஒரு பாடம். யாருக்காவது கடன் கொடுக்க இருந்து, அவருக்கு கொடுக்க இயலாமல் போனால், அவர்களின் வாரிசைத் தேடிப்பிடித்து கொடுத்து விட வேண்டும்.

When Madras First Voted !!!

Chennai has just voted, along with the rest of Tamil Nadu. Waiting for the results may be a good time to think of the first mass-based election – in 1937, when over 35 million or about 25 per cent of the adult population voted in all British-ruled provinces of India, for the local legislatures. In Madras Presidency, that meant elections to the newly created Madras Legislative Assembly.

Our city was the capital of this vast Presidency, which extended from Andhra to Kanyakumari and so the atmosphere was electric. Adding to the excitement was the Congress party, contesting elections for the first time. Leading the campaign effort was S Satyamurti, veteran freedom-fighter, lawyer, theatre personality, patron of music and a magnificent orator. Under Satyamurti, the campaign was to be a colourful one.

He had for long been using theatre and (from 1931) film artistes, to attract crowds for his public meetings. In the 1937 campaign he was to press them once again into service. Chief among these were KB Sundarambal and ‘Avvai’ TK Shanmugam. Those were polls when in place of symbols, each party was identified by a ballot box of a certain colour and the voter had to push his paper into the box of his/her choice. The Congress party was assigned the colour yellow. At each public meeting, Sundarambal and Shanmugam would sing song hits from their plays and when a sizeable crowd had collected, would speak about the Congress. Then Sundarambal would wax eloquent on the good and auspicious qualities of turmeric and therefore the colour yellow. They would then depart after asking everyone assembled to vote for the yellow box. The Devadasi campaigner Tanjavur Kamukannammal would give the colour a different twist. She would speak about snuff and then ask everyone to vote in the ‘snuff box’! A special gramophone record containing the songs of Sundarambal and Musiri Subramania Iyer along with Congress appeals carried the message into households.

Such was the Congress juggernaut that some opposing candidates opted to withdraw rather than fight the polls. The first unopposed return to the Assembly was announced a month before the election – a certain K Kamaraj Nadar (!!) was declared elected from the Sattur-Aruppukottai rural constituency.

Those were days when newspapers could get away by being blatantly partisan (or patriotic depending on how you looked at it). The Hindu, carried a headline instructing its readers to “Fill the Yellow Boxes”. “Voters should require little persuasion at this time of the day to vote for the Congress,” it said. On the eve of polling day (February 14) NS Varadachari, a Congress candidate, was roughed by hired thugs in the Triplicane area. The Hindu carried a column on this and also had a photograph of Varadachari leading a procession, with bandaged head!

The results, when announced on February 24, were well worth the effort. The Congress had cornered 74 per cent of the seats in the Assembly, the best performance by the party anywhere in India.
