நான்கு நாள்களாக கழுத்தளவு வெள்ளத்தில் மீட்புப் பணிகளில் ஈடுபட்டுவிட்டு, கால்களில் சேற்றுப் புண்களுடனும், கண்களில் கெஞ்சும் தூக்கத்துடனும், புரசைவாக்கத்தில் உள்ள ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ் அமைப்பின் சேவாபாரதி தலைமை அலுவலகத்துக்கு வருகிறார் ஜீவானந்தம், “ஸ்வயம் சேவக்’ எனப்படும் லட்சக்கணக்காண ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ்-ஸின் தன்னார்வலர்களில் ஒருவர்.

வில்லிவாக்கத்தில் தள்ளுவண்டிகளை வைத்துக் கொண்டு மார்பளவு வெள்ளத்தில் நின்றவாறு மீட்புப் பணிகளில் ஈடுபட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தனர் ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ். தொண்டர்கள். வடபழனியில், இரண்டு டிரம்களை கயிற்றின் மூலமாக இணைத்து மக்களைக் காப்பாற்றிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். வளசரவாக்கத்தில், லாரி டயர்களைக் கொண்டு மக்களைக் காப்பாற்றிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். சென்னையில் மட்டும் சுமார் 8 ஆயிரம் மக்களை வெள்ளத்திலிருந்து இவர்கள் மீட்டுள்ளனர் என்பது வெளியே தெரியவராத தகவல்.

புரசைவாக்கத்தில் முதல் மையத்தை அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக டிசம்பர் 2-ஆம் தேதி ஆரம்பித்தோம். அதற்கு முன்னதாகவே, சென்னையின் பல இடங்களில் ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ். தொண்டர்கள் சிறு மையங்களை அமைத்து விட்டனர். குரோம்பேட்டை, மணலி, வில்லிவாக்கம், கே.கே.நகர் என 17 இடங்களில் சேவா மையங்களை அமைத்துள்ளோம். அவற்றின் கீழ் பல துணை சேவை மையங்கள் உள்ளன. ஒவ்வொரு சேவா மையத்திலும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மக்கள் பயன் பெறுகிறார்கள். ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ்.ஸுக்குச் சொந்தமான பள்ளிகள், ஆதரவாளர்களின் மண்டபங்கள், வீடுகள் எல்லாமே ஏதோ வகையில் சேவா மையங்களாக மாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளன. இப்படியாக சென்னையில் மட்டுமே 83 இடங்களில் சேவைகளை ஒருங்கிணைத்துள்ளோம். மூன்று நாள்களுக்கு ஒரு தடவை, இந்த மையங்களில் உள்ளவர்கள் புரசைவாக்கத்தில் சந்தித்து அடுத்தகட்ட நடவடிக்கைகளைத் திட்டமிடுகிறோம்’ என்கிறார் ராம.ராஜசேகர்.
ஓட்டேரியில் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் அதிகமாக வாழும் தெருவில் மார்பளவு வெள்ளத்தில் மிதந்தபடி சென்று வீடு வீடாக உணவு கொடுக்கிறார்கள் ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ். தொண்டர்கள். மாடியில் இருந்து இறங்கிவரும் ஒரு மூதாட்டி, “வெள்ளத்திலும் வீடு தேடி வந்து உணவு கொடுக்கும் நீங்கள் நல்லா இருக்கோணும். கர்த்தர் உங்களை ஆசீர்வதிப்பார்’ என்று கையெடுத்துக் கும்பிடுகிறார்.
வில்லிவாக்கம், சிட்கோ நகரில் தள்ளுவண்டியில் மீட்புப் பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ளும் ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ் தொண்டர்களிடம் தனது மனைவி, குழந்தைகளைக் கொடுத்து “இவர்களை பத்திரமாக மீட்டுத் தாருங்கள். நான் அடுத்த படகில் வருகிறேன்’ என்று ஒரு முஸ்லிம் சகோதரர் கூறுகிறார்.

மீட்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு தொடர்ச்சியாக உணவு கிடைப்பதையும் இவர்கள் உறுதிப்படுத்துகிறார்கள். வெள்ள பாதிப்புக்கு உள்பட்ட பகுதிகளில் இதுவரை சுமார் 50 இலவச மருத்துவ முகாம்களை நடத்தி இருக்கிறார்கள்.
ஒவ்வொரு முகாமிலும், ஆயிரக்கணக்கான பயனாளிகள் பயன் பெற்று வருகிறார்கள். சேற்றுப் புண்ணுக்கான மருந்தில் இருந்து, பிளீச்சிங் பவுடர் வரைக்கும், குழந்தைகளுக்கான இருமல் மருந்தில் இருந்து பெண்களுக்குத் தேவையான பிரத்யேக பொருள்கள் வரைக்கும் ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ். நடத்தும் மருத்துவ முகாம்களில் கிடைக்கின்றன. அந்தந்தப் பகுதியில் வசிக்கும் மருத்துவர்கள் தாங்களாக முன்வந்து மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை அளிப்பதையும், நூற்றுக் கணக்கான மக்கள் முகாமுக்கு வந்து மருந்துகளை வாங்கிச் செல்வதையும் பார்த்தோம்.

சைதாப்பேட்டையில் இருக்கிறது செட்டித் தோட்டம் என்ற எளியவர்கள் வாழும் பிரதேசம். இயற்கையின் சீற்றத்தில் சிக்கிச் சின்னாபின்னமான இப்பகுதியில் நுழைபவர்களைக் குடலைப் பிடுங்கும் துர்நாற்றம்தான் வரவேற்கிறது. அங்கே, தவ்ஹீத் ஜமாஅத் அமைப்பைச் சேர்ந்த பல நூறு இளைஞர்கள் துப்புரவுப் பணிகளில் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். சுமார் 3,000 அடித்தட்டு மக்கள் வாழும் இங்கே, முழு நேர மீட்புப் பணிகளையும், துப்புரவுப் பணிகளையும் இவர்கள்தான் செய்கிறார்கள்.
“ஏழைகளின் பாதையில் குறுக்கிடும் எல்லாவற்றையும் களைவதுதான் எமது நோக்கம்’ எனச் சிரித்தவாறு சொல்கிறார் ரவூப். இவர் பெங்களூரில், பிரபல மென்பொருள் நிறுவனமொன்றில் உயர் பதவியில் இருக்கிறார். இவரின் நண்பர் வசீம் அக்ரம், பல் மருத்துவர். இவர்கள் அனைவருமே, எந்த விதமான முகச்சுளிப்பும் இல்லாமல், குடலைப் புரட்டும் துர்நாற்றத்துக்குள்ளும் இறங்கி “தனி ஒருவ’னாக வேலை பார்க்கிறார்கள். வெள்ளம் அடித்துவிட்டுச் சென்ற குப்பைக் கூளங்களை, தொழில் முறை வழக்குரைஞரான முகமது யூசுப், தனது கைகளால் அள்ளிச் சுத்தம் செய்கிறார்.

“எமது சக மனிதர்கள் துன்பப்படும்போது எப்படித்தான் வாய்மூடி மௌனியாகப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருப்பது?’ எனக் கேட்டு அமைதியாகப் புன்னகைக்கிறார் ஹாஜா கனி, த.மு.மு.க.வின் மாநிலச் செயலாளர். வரலாறுகாணாத இந்த வெள்ளத்தில் த.மு.மு.க.வினர் ஆற்றிய பணிகள் அளப்பரியன.
கடந்த மாதம் 15-ஆம் தேதி, முதல் கட்ட மழை தொடங்கியபோதே த.மு.மு.க. மாணவர் அணியினர் களத்தில் இறங்கி எந்தெந்த இடங்களில் வெள்ள அபாயம் ஏற்படலாம் என்பதை சர்வே எடுத்து அதை அறிக்கையாகத் தயார்செய்து, தாம்பரம் நகராட்சியிடம் கொடுத்ததுள்ளனர். 16-ஆம் தேதியன்றே சுமார் 30 பேர் வரைக்கும் பயணிக்கக் கூடிய படகொன்றை கோவளத்தில் இருந்து தருவித்து, இரவும் பகலுமாக ஓட்டி அன்று மட்டுமே சுமார் ஆயிரம் பேரை த.மு.மு.க. தொண்டர்கள் மீட்டுள்ளனர். எந்த ஓய்வும் இல்லாமல், இரவு பகலாக இவர்களின் மீட்புப் பணி தொடர்ந்து நடைபெற்றது. மீட்புப் பணிகளில் ஈடுபட்ட முன் அனுபவங்களும், பயிற்சிகளும் இருந்ததால் இலகுவாக இயங்கக் கூடியதாக இருந்தது என்கிறார்கள் த.மு.மு.க. தொண்டர்கள்.
“முடிச்சூர் பகுதியில் உள்ள வீடொன்றில் பிறந்து முப்பதே நாளான பச்சிளம் குழந்தையுடன் ஒரு குடும்பம் வெள்ளத்தில் சிக்கியுள்ளதாகத் தகவல்கள் வந்தன. மிகுந்த சிரமங்களுக்கிடையில் அந்தப் பகுதிக்கு சென்றோம். பெருமழை. மின்சாரம் இல்லாமல், அந்தப் பிரதேசமே கும்மிருட்டாக இருந்தது. கரண்ட் கம்பிகளைப் பிடித்து எம்மை சமநிலைப்படுத்தியவாறு சென்று அவர்களை மீட்டோம். அந்தப் பிஞ்சுக் குழந்தையின் முகமும், அந்தத் தாயின் பரிதவிப்பும் இன்னும் கண்களில் நிற்கிறது. சக மனிதர்களுக்கு உதவுவதைத்தானே இஸ்லாம் போதிக்கிறது…’ – கண்களில் அமைதியுடன் பேசுகிறார் யாகூப்.
பெரியார் சமத்துவபுரம், முடிச்சூர் சாலை, கிஷ்கிந்தா ஆகிய பகுதிகளில் த.மு.மு.க.வினர் பெருமளவு மீட்புப் பணிகளை மேற்க்கொண்டுள்ளனர். சென்னையிலுள்ள அத்தனை பள்ளிவாசல்களும், மழையினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் தங்குவதற்காக பாரபட்சமின்றி திறந்து விடப்பட்டன. சாதி, மத பேதமின்றி அனைவருமே அங்கு தங்க அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டனர். தாம்பரம் பகுதியில் மட்டுமே சுமார் 3,000 பேரை இவர்கள் மீட்டுள்ளனர் என்பது அதிசயிக்கவைக்கும் புள்ளி விபரம்தான்.

தாவூத் மியாகான். காயிதே மில்லத்தின் பேரன். இந்த வெள்ளக் காலத்தில் இவர் செய்தவை அளப்பரிய பணிகள்தான். மேடவாக்கத்தில் உள்ள காயிதே மில்லத் கல்லூரியை மையமாக வைத்து இவர்கள் சுமார் 1,000 பேருக்கு உணவளித்து வருகிறனர். அந்தக் கல்லூரியின் ஆசிரியர்கள் மற்றும் மாணவர்கள் உதவியுடன் அத்தியாவசியப் பொருட்களை விநியோகித்து வருகின்றனர். கூடவே, வீட்டுக்குத் தேவையான சமையல் பாத்திரங்களையும் வழங்கி வருகிறார்கள். பல இடங்களில் பிரதான வீதிகளில் மட்டுமே மீட்புப் பணிகள் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன. உதாரணமாக செம்மஞ்சேரியின் உட்புறமாக, உணவில்லாமல், வெள்ளத்தில் தவித்த பல நூறு குடும்பங்களை மீட்டுள்ளனர். 2,500 லிட்டர் ஆரோ பிளாண்டை மக்களுக்காக திறந்துவிட்டு மக்களின் துயரைப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டுள்ளனர்.
முஸ்லிம் சகோதரர்களால் மீட்டு வரப்பட்டு, தாம்பரம் பேபி பள்ளியில் தங்க வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த சுமார் ஆயிரம் பேருக்கு துறைமுகச்செல்வி என்பவர் மூன்று வேளையும் உணவு கொடுக்க முன்வந்தார். முஸ்லிம் அமைப்புகளுக்கும், துறைமுகச் செல்விக்குமான தொடர்பை ஏற்படுத்திக் கொடுத்தவர் தாம்பரம் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் ஆல்வின் ராஜ்.
சென்னையில் வெள்ள நிவாரணப் பணிகளை மேற்கொள்வதற்காக புது தில்லியை தலைமையிடமாகக் கொண்டு செயல்பட்டு வரும் ஜமியத் உலமாயே ஹிந்த் அமைப்பின் சார்பில் தொடர்ந்து கடந்த ஒரு வாரமாக சென்னையில் வெள்ளத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு 80,000 உணவுப் பொட்டலங்கள் வழங்கப்பட்டன. தொடர்ந்து தாம்பரம், முடிச்சூர் உள்ளிட்ட பகுதிகளில் புதன்கிழமை 15,000 உணவுப் பொட்டலங்களும், வில்லிவாக்கம், திருநின்றவூர், கொருக்குப்பேட்டை உள்ளிட்ட பகுதிகளில் வியாழக்கிழமை 3,648 உணவுப் பொட்டலங்களும் வழங்கப்பட்டன. இது தவிர 10,000 குடும்பங்களுக்கு போர்வை, பாத்திரங்கள், உணவுப் பொருள்கள் கொண்ட பெரிய பைகள் வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. நந்தனம், தண்டையார்பேட்டை, வண்ணாரப்பேட்டை, முத்தமிழ் நகர், பொழிச்சலூர், திருவள்ளூர் உள்ளிட்ட பகுதிகளில் வெள்ளத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு 2,800 பைகளில் நிவாரணப் பொருள்கள் வழங்கப்பட்டன. தொடர்ந்து கோட்டூர்புரம், கிண்டி உள்ளிட்ட பகுதிகளில் சனிக்கிழமை நிவாரணப் பொருள்கள் வழங்கப்பட உள்ளன. புரசைவாக்கம் பெரிய மசூதியின் சார்பில் 30,000 உணவுப் பொட்டலங்களும், பாத்திரங்கள், ஆடைகள் கொண்ட பெரிய பைகள் 3,000 குடும்பங்களுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.
இந்தியாவில் சகிப்புத்தன்மை இருக்கிறதா? என்பது தொடர்பாக நாம் நடத்திவரும் வீண் விவாதங்களுக்கான பதில் இந்தச் சம்பவங்களிலேயே ஒளிந்துள்ளது. இந்தியாவிலா சகிப்புத்தன்மை இல்லை….?

Have the Lord’s name within and the practice of your duty(swadharma) without. Even while engaging in selfless service, let your mind repeat the Lord’s Name. When rains pour on the mountain peaks and the water hurries down on all sides, no river emerges therefrom. However when the waters flow in a single direction, first a brook, then a stream, then a torrent, and finally a river is formed, and the rains reach the sea. Water that runs in one direction reaches the sea; water that flows in four directions soaks in and is lost. Mental tendencies (samskaras) are like this. Of what use are they if they merely come and go, this way today and that way tomorrow? The holy stream of good inborn desires must flow full and steady along the fields of holy thoughts and finally abide in the great ocean of bliss at the moment of death.

The merry season comes and goes, and once the decorations are packed up, presents are opened and the celebrations draw to a close, so does the Christmas spirit, and all the love, thoughtfulness, and unity that it brings. But what is it that discourages us from celebrating this joyous feast all year round? This year, with all my kind greetings and wishes, I would like to send you a reminder about something that is better than the observance of Christmas day, and that is – keeping Christmas.

Are you willing…

…to forget what you have done for other people,
and to remember what other people have done for you?

…to ignore what the world owes you,
and to think what you owe the world?

…to put your rights in the background,
and your duties in the middle distance,
and your chances to do a little more than your duty
in the foreground?

Keeping Christmas

Are you willing…

…to see that men and women are just as real as you are,
and try to look behind their faces to their hearts,
hungry for joy?

…to own up to the fact that probably the only good reason
for your existence is not what you are going to get out of life,
but what you are going to give to life?

…to close your book of complaints against the management of the universe, and look around you for a place where
you can sow a few seeds of happiness?

Are you willing to do these things even for a day?
Then you can keep Christmas.

Are you willing to stoop down and consider
the needs and desires of little children?

And to remember the weakness and loneliness of people growing old?

…to stop asking how much your friends love you,
and ask yourself whether you love them enough?

…to bear in mind the things that other people have to bear in their hearts to try to understand what those who live in the same home with you really want, without waiting
for them to tell you?

…to trim your lamp so that it will give more light and less smoke, and to carry it in front
so that your shadow will fall behind you?

…to make a grave for your ugly thoughts, and a garden with an open gate for your kind feelings ?

…to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world? Stronger than hate, stronger than evil,
stronger than death?
And that the blessed life which began in Bethlehem
1,900 years ago is the image and brightness
of the Eternal Love?

Are you willing to do these things, even for a day?

Then you can keep Christmas.

And if you can keep it for a day,

“This Looks Like A Petri Dish Full Of Microorganisms, But It’s So Much Cooler”..

People often categorize others by describing them as being “left-brained” or “right-brained.” People who are more logical, strategic, and rational are placed in the former category, and those who are more creative, intuitive, and artistic are placed in the latter.

While it’s obvious that most people embody different combinations of the two, it’s fair to say that plenty of us fall further to one side than the other. One creator who appears to fall somewhere in the middle is Anglo-Irish artist Rogan Brown. His creations are aesthetically stunning, and they’re inspired by the building blocks of scientific study.

His latest collection is called Magic Circle Variations, and it’s designed to straddle the fence between what’s real and what’s imagined.

In the artist’s words, “Reality is transformed and estranged through the creative process, which paradoxically makes the finished work more real and unique.”

He makes hundreds of these intricate paper cuttings for every single piece.

Some of Brown’s earlier work was exclusively hand cut, but this collection combines hand-cut designs with others that were created with lasers.

When coming up with the concept and direction of each piece, he studied the imagery of bacteria, coral, pathogens, and diatoms. Beyond that, the compositions are fictive, imagined, and totally original.

Although he cites model-making and scientific drawing as inspirations for this collection, “everything has to be refracted through the prism of the imagination.” It’s not often that an artist is able to steer vastly different worlds into such an incredible collision.

சென்னை மழை வெள்ளத்தின் தாண்டவம் இன்னும் நம்மை விட்டு நீங்கவில்லை. என்ன நடந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது என்பதை உணர்வதற்குள் அநேகமாக சென்னையில் இருந்த அனைவரும் இந்தப் பேரிடருக்குள் சிக்கிக்கொண்டு தள்ளாடினோம்; தள்ளாடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறோம்; தள்ளாடிக்கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறோம், முற்றிலும் வீழ்ந்துபோய்விடவில்லை. இதற்குக் காரணம் மழை, வெள்ளத் தாண்டவத்தின் உக்கிரத்துக்கு ஈடுகொடுக்கும் வகையில் மனிதநேயத்தைக் காட்டியவர்கள்தான்.

பெரிய பெரிய விஷயத்துக்கெல்லாம் போகத் தேவையில்லை. மழை ஓய்ந்த பிறகு, நீரின் முற்றுகையில் நான்கு நாட்கள் தவித்த பிறகு நண்பர் ஒருவர் மடிப்பாக்கத்தில் மூழ்கிய தனது வீட்டிலிருந்து அலுவலகத்துக்குக் கிளம்பி நடந்துவந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார். அவர் நடந்து சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தபோது பின்னால் ஒரு கார் வந்து நிற்பதுபோல் தோன்றியிருக்கிறது. திரும்பிப் பார்த்தால் காரிலிருந்து யாரோ ஒருவர் இறங்கிச் செல்வது தெரிந்திருக்கிறது. நண்பர் மேற்கொண்டு தன் வழியைப் பார்த்து நடந்து சென்றிருக்கிறார். கார் ஹாரன் சத்தம் கேட்டிருக்கிறது. நண்பர் ஓரமாக நடக்க முயன்றிருக்கிறார். அவரைச் சற்றுக் கடந்து பக்கவாட்டில் வந்து நின்றிருக்கிறது கார்.

கார்காரர் காரின் ஜன்னலை இறக்கிவிட்டுப் பாதசாரி நண்பரை அழைத்து “எங்கே போகணும் சொல்லுங்க, இறக்கிவிடுகிறேன்” என்றிருக்கிறார். நண்பருக்கு பேச்சே வரவில்லை. காருக்குள் ஏறிப் பின்சீட்டில் அமர்ந்துகொள்கிறார். நம்மிடம் இந்தச் சம்பவத்தை நெகிழ்ச்சியுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டபோது நண்பர் இப்படிச்சொன்னார், “இதுபோன்ற ஒரு உதவியை இதற்கு முன் செய்தது ஒரு மீன்பாடி வண்டிக்காரர்தான். நடு இரவில் குழந்தைகள் மனைவியுடன் பைக்கில் சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தபோது பெட்ரோல் இல்லாமல் வண்டி நின்றுவிட, என்ன செய்வதென்று நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தபோது அந்த வழியே வந்த மீன்பாடிக்காரர் தானாகவே வந்து, என்ன விஷயம் என்று கேட்டு உதவி செய்தார். அடித்தட்டு மக்கள் எப்போதும் அப்படித்தான். அதில் எந்த அதிசயமும் இல்லை.

ஆனால், மேல்தட்டு வர்க்கத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒருவர் தானாக லிஃப்ட் கொடுக்கும் அதிசயத்தை நிகழ்த்தியது இந்த மழை, வெள்ளம்தான். காரில் உட்கார்ந்த பிறகுதான் உணர்ந்தேன், எனக்கு முன்னாலும் அவர் ஒருவருக்கு லிஃப்ட் கொடுத்து இறக்கி விட்டிருக்கிறார்.”

காரில் லிஃப்ட் கொடுப்பது ஒரு சிறிய விஷயமாகத் தோன்றலாம். ஆனால், இந்த மழை, வெள்ளம் சமூகத்தின் மூலை முடுக்குகளிலெல்லாம் பாய்ந்து, அதன் உள்ளே புதைந்துபோயிருந்த பரிவுணர்வையெல்லாம் எந்த அளவுக்கு வெளிக்கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறது என்பதற்கு ஒரு பருக்கை பதம் இது.

சிறிய அளவில் இப்படியென்றால் பெரிய அளவில் எத்தனையோ பேர் என்னவெல்லாமோ செய்து, ஏதும் செய்ய முடியாத நிலையில் இருப்பவர்களையெல்லாம் குற்றவுணர்வு கொள்ளவும் வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். இவர்களில் பெரும்பாலானோரும் முகமற்றவர்கள். அதாவது, சமூகத்தால் அறியப்படாதவர்கள் என்பதுதான் மகத்தான செய்தி. உதவி செய்ய வந்தவர்களின் முகத்தில் மனிதம் என்ற ஸ்டிக்கரைத் தவிர வேறு ஏதும் ஒட்டப்பட்டிருக்கவில்லை என்பதை நாம் கவனித்தாக வேண்டும். முகம் தெரிந்த மனிதர்களுக்குச் சளைக்காமல் முகம்தெரியாத மனிதர்கள் எத்தனையோ பேர் எவ்வளவோ உதவிகளைச் செய்து தமிழக, இந்திய மக்களை மட்டுமல்ல உலகத்தினரையே வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்தியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

அடையாறுக்குப் பக்கத்தில் மழை, வெள்ளத்தால் மோசமாக பாதிக்கப் பட்டிருக்கும் பகுதியொன்றில் ஒருவர் தனது முகத்தில் துணியைக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு, பெரிய பாத்திரத்தில் சூடாகப் பால் காய்ச்சிக்கொண்டு, தண்ணீரில் கவனமாக நடந்துசென்று சிறுவர்களுக்கும் குழந்தைகளுக்கும் விநியோகித்திருக்கிறார். அவர் யார் என்ன என்று கேட்டதற்கு, “அதெல்லாம் முக்கியமில்லாத விஷயம், நான் போய் இன்னும் பால் எடுத்துவருகிறேன்” என்று சொல்லிவிட்டுப் போயிருக்கிறார். மனிதத்துக்கு சாதி, மதம், மொழி மட்டுமல்ல முகமும் கிடையாது என்பதை அவர் நிரூபித்துவிட்டிருக்கிறார்.

இதுவரை ஊடகங்களிலும் சமூக ஊடகங்களிலும் வெளிவராத தியாகம் அடுத்த நபருடையது. இன்னொரு நண்பர் சொன்ன தகவல். சாலையை மூழ்கடித்த வெள்ளத்தில் காரில் அவர் போய்க்கொண்டி ருந்தபோது ஒரு முஸ்லீம் பெரியவர் நடுச் சாலையில் கையில் ஒரு செடியைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு நின்றிருக்கிறார். இறங்கி என்னவென்று விசாரித்த அந்த நண்பருக்குக் கண்கலங்கிவிட்டது.

சாலையின் அந்த இடத்தில் ஒரு குழி ஏற்பட்டுவிட்டது என்றும், யாரும் அதற்குள் விழுந்துவிடக் கூடாது என்பதால் அடையாளத் துக்காகச் செடியைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு நிற்கிறேன் என்றும் அந்த முஸ்லீம் பெரியவர் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். ஊன்றிவிட்டு நீங்கள் போயிருக்கலாமே என்று நண்பர் கேட்டதற்கு, ஓடும் நீரில் செடி நிற்க மாட்டேன் என்கிறது, அதனால்தான் அதைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு நிற்கிறேன் என்று அந்த முஸ்லீம் பெரியவர் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். அதுமட்டுமல்ல நண்பர்களே, அடுத்து வரும் விஷயம் தான் நம்மை மிக மிக அற்பர்களாகவும், அந்த முஸ்லீம் பெரியவரை மகாத்மாவாகவும் ஆக்குகிறது.

நண்பரிடம் அந்தப் பெரியவர் இப்படிச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார், ‘கடந்த நான்கு மணி நேரமா நான் இப்படி நின்னுக்கிட்டிருக்கேன். யாராச்சும் பார்த்துக்குவாங்கனு அப்படியே விட்டுட்டுப் போவ மனசே வரல.”

அந்தப் பெண்மணியின் வீட்டை வெள்ளம் முழுவதுமாக மூழ்கடித்துவிட்டது. கணவர், குழந்தைகளெல்லாம் எங்கெங்கோ தங்கவைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றனர். அலுவலகம் ஒன்றில் துப்புரவுப் பணியைச் செய்துவருபவர் அவர். எல்லாவற்றையும் இழந்திருக்கும் நிலையில் அப்படியே சும்மா இருந்துவிட முடியுமா? பிழைப்பு நடத்தியாக வேண்டுமல்லவா! அலுவலகம் வந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

வேலை முடிந்த பின் எங்கே செல்வீர்கள் என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டதற்கு, “வீட்டுக்குத்தான்” என்று பதில் வந்தது. இந்த நிலையில் வீட்டுக்கு ஏன் செல்ல வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டால், “பாவங்க, ஏழு தெருநாய்களுக்கு நான்தான் சோறு போட்டு வளக்குறேன். நான் இல்லாட்டி அதுங்க அவ்வளவுதான். அதுங்களுக்காக நான் அங்க போய்த்தானே ஆவணும்.”

அதே போல் ஹிப்ஹாப் தமிழன் பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட செய்தி இது: “வெள்ளத்தால் அதிகம் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட கோட்டூர்புரம்-ஆர்.ஏ.புரம் பகுதிக்கு நடுவில்தான் இருக்கிறது எங்கள் அலுவலகம். 5 நாட்களாக இங்கு மின்சாரமோ தொலைத்தொடர்போ இல்லாததால் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்றுகூட தெரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாத சூழல். நாங்கள் வசிக்கும் தெருவில் மட்டும் நீர் தேக்கம் சற்று குறைவு.

சரி தப்பித்துவிட்டோமே, கிளம்பிவிடலாமா என நினைத்துத் தெருமுனைக்குச் சென்றால், எங்கள் அலுவலகத்தில் வேலை பார்க்கும் பணிப்பெண் விஜயா அக்கா ஒரு பெரிய பாத்திரத்தில் தன்னிடம் இருந்த அனைத்துப் பொருள்களையும் சமைத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். “தம்பி ஏரியா பூரா தண்ணிபா, நம்ம ஸ்டூடியோல இருக்குற தண்ணி கேனை எடுத்துக் குடுத்துறலாமா” எனக் கேட்கிறார். இதில் அவர் மகளுக்கு 1 வாரமாக டைஃபாய்டு வேறு. செருப்பால் அடித்ததுபோல் இருந்தது. யார் இவர்? எதற்காக இந்தச் சமூகத்திற்கு இவ்வளவு செய்ய வேண்டும்? இதில் நாம் வேறு கோவை கிளம்பிவிடலாமா என யோசித்திருக்கிறோமே. ச்சீ என்று தோன்றியது.’

இவர்கள் மட்டுமல்ல. ஒட்டுமொத்த சமூகத்தாலும் தினசரி சூறையாடப்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் வாழ்வு பாலியல் தொழிலில் ஈடுபடுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கும் பெண்களுடையது. ஆனால், அந்த நிலையிலும் மகாராஷ்டிரத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பாலியல் தொழிலாளர்கள் ஒரு நாள் பட்டினி கிடந்து சென்னைக்கு நிவாரணமாக ஒரு லட்சம் அனுப்பியிருக்கிறார்கள். சமூகத்தால் கொஞ்சம் கூட பொருட்படுத்தப்படாதவர்கள் நரிக்குறவர் இன மக்கள். இந்நிலையில் அவினாசியைச் சேர்ந்த நரிக்குறவர்கள் வெள்ள நிவாரணத்துக்காக 100 பாய்களை வழங்கியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

இருப்பவர் கொடுப்பதைவிட இல்லாதவர்கள் கொடுப்பது அளவில் எவ்வளவு சிறிதானாலும் மதிப்பில் கோடி கோடி மடங்கு உயர்ந்தது என்பதைப் பாலியல் தொழிலாளிகளும் நரிக்குறவர்களும் நிரூபித்திருக்கிறார்கள். எல்லோருக்குள்ளும் ‘மகாத்மா’ குணம் உறைந்திருக்கிறது. ஆனால், அதை உசுப்பிவிட்டு உயிர் கொடுத்திருப்பது இவர்கள் மட்டும்தான். ஆகவே, இவர்களை ‘மகாத்மாக்கள்’ என்று அழைப்பதில் எந்தத் தவறுமில்லை.

சென்னை வீழ்ந்துபோகாததற்கு மட்டுமல்ல, உலகம் இன்னும் அழிந்துபோகாததற்கும் இந்த மகாத்மாக்கள்தான் காரணம். ஏனென்றால், இன்னொரு மகாத்மா இப்படிச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்: “இன்று உலகில் எண்ணற்ற மக்கள் உயிரோடிருக்கிறார்கள் என்றால் அதன் பொருள், உலகம் தொடர்வது ஆயுத பலத்தினால் அல்ல. மாறாக உண்மை அல்லது அன்பு ஆகியவற்றின் பலத்தினால்தான் என்று பொருள். இத்தனை யுத்தங்கள் நடந்த பின்னரும் உலகம் அழியவில்லை என்பதே இந்த சக்திகளின் மறுக்க முடியாத வெற்றி.”

சமீபத்தில் சென்னையைத் தாக்கிய பெருமழையைவிடக் கடுமையான மழையால் 1910-இல் பிரெஞ்சு நாட்டு தலைநகர் பாரீஸ் பாதிக்கப்பட்டது. 1910 ஜனவரி, பிப்ரவரி மாதங்களில் பாரீஸை மூழ்கடித்த அந்த வெள்ளம் குறித்து, இப்போதுபோலத் தகவல் தொலைத்தொடர்பு வசதி எதுவும் இல்லாத நிலையிலும் மகாகவி பாரதியார் தனது விஜயா (14.02.1910), இந்தியா (19.02.1910) இதழ்களில்
விவரமாக எழுதியிருக்கிறார். அன்றைய மொழி நடையை மாற்றாமல், பாரதியாரின் பிறந்த தினமான இன்று அதை மறுபதிவு செய்கிறோம். நூறாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு பாரீஸ் எதிர்கொண்ட சோதனைகள்

பலவற்றையும் இப்போது சென்னையும் எதிர்கொண்டது என்பதுதான் வியப்பு – ஆசிரியர்.

நமக்குச் சென்ற வாரம் தபால் மூலமாகக் கிடைத்த கடிதங்களாலும் பத்திரிகைகளாலும் பாரீஸ் வெள்ளத்தைக் குறித்து, பின் எழுதும் விபரங்கள் வந்திருக்கின்றன. கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாகச் சேன் நதியில் பிரவாகம் அதிகரித்துச் சுற்றுப்பக்கங்களிலெல்லாம் பரவிவந்தது. பூமிக்குள் இருப்புப்பாதை போட்டு ரயில் வண்டிகள் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் சுரங்கவழிகளில் முதல்முதல் தண்ணீர் நிறைந்து அவ்வழியாக ரயில் வண்டிகள் ஓட்ட முடியாமல் நிறுத்தப்பட்டன.
பிறகு வெளிரோட்டுகளில் பரவி, பாரீஸில் பள்ளமாக இருக்கும் பாகங்களிலெல்லாம் நீர் தங்கிவிட்டது. குதிரை வண்டிகள் வெகு கஷ்டத்தோடு தெருக்களில் இங்குமங்குமாகப் போய் கடைசியில் தண்ணீர் அதிகரிக்கவே வண்டிகளின் நடமாட்டமேயில்லாமல் போய்விட்டது. டிராம் வண்டிகளும் மேடான தெருக்களில்தான் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தன.
வரவரத் தண்ணீர் அதிகரிக்கவே அநேக தெருக்களில் டிராம் வண்டிகூடச் செல்ல முடியவில்லை. கேதோர்úஸ என்னும் பாகத்திலிருந்த ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷன் தண்ணீரில் முக்கால் முழுகிவிட்டபடியால் அந்தப் பக்கத்து ரயில் வண்டி ஓடவே யில்லை.
எங்கெங்கு பார்த்தாலும் தெருக்களில் சுமார் 20 அடி தண்ணீர் நிறைந்திருந்தபடியால் சிறு படகு மூலமாகத்தான் ஜனங்கள் நடமாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். வெள்ளம் அதிகமாகும் என்று நன்றாகத் தெரிந்தபொழுதே பாரீஸ் பட்டணத்து முக்கிய போலீஸ் உத்தியோகஸ்தரான (Prefect de Police) ஷெர்புர், பிரெஸ்ட், தொன் கெர்க்கலே முதலிய துறைமுகங்களுக்குத் தந்தி கொடுத்து சிறு படகுகளைத் தகுந்த மனிதர்களோடு வரவழைத்தார். பாரீஸிலுள்ள படகுகளும் இவைகளும்தான் இப்போது தெருக்களில் நடமாடுவதற்கு உபயோகப்படுகின்றன.

அநேக தெருக்களில் தண்ணீர் முதல் மாடி வரைக்கும் வந்துவிட்டிருக்கிறது. அந்த வீட்டுக்குள் செல்ல வேண்டியவர்கள் படகுகளின் மேல் மாடியிலிருக்கும் ஜன்னலண்டை போய், அதற்குள் நுழைந்து உள்ளே குதிக்க வேண்டியதாயிருக்கிறது. அநேக வீடுகளில் ஜனங்கள் ஜன்னல் வழியாக அடிக்கடி போய்வருவதற்குத் தகுந்த சாரம் கட்டி வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். வீட்டுக்குக் கீழ்பாகத்திலிருந்த ஆடு, மாடு, குதிரை முதலிய மிருகங்கள், பக்ஷி வகைகளெல்லாம் அடியோடு நாசமாய்விட்டன. இவைகளின் சவங்கள் தண்ணீரில் மிதந்து கிடக்கின்றன.
ழார்தென் தேப்ளாந்த் என்னுமிடத்திலிருக்கும் உயிர் மிருகங்களெல்லாம் தண்ணீர் தங்குவதினால் கஷ்டப்படுகின்றன. கூண்டிலிருக்கும் பாம்புகளும் கரடிகளும் தத்தளிக்கின்றன. ஆனால், அங்கு சீக்கிரத்தில் நீர் வடிந்து விடும்.
தின்பண்டங்களின் விலை வெள்ளத்தினால் அதிகமாய் விடவில்லை. படகில் ஏறிப்போய் வீடுகளில் கொடுக்க வேண்டியிருப்பதால் ரூபாயிக்கு ஆறு காசு விகிதம் விலை உயர்த்தப்பட்டது. சில பாகங்களில் ரொட்டி சுடுபவர்கள் அடுப்புகளில் தண்ணீர் நிறைந்துவிட்டபடியால் தண்ணீர் எட்டாத இடங்களிலிருக்கும் ரொட்டிக் கிடங்குக்காரர்கள் தங்கள் அடுப்பில் ரொட்டி தட்டிக் கொள்ளும்படி இவர்களுக்கு அனுமதி கொடுத்தார்கள். வெளியில் எப்பொழுதும் பனி பெய்துகொண்டே இருந்தது.
ராணுவ உத்தியோகஸ்தர்களும், ராணுவச் சேவகர்களும் ஓச்சல் ஒழிவில்லாமல் ஜனங்களுக்கு ஓர் ஆபத்தும் நேரிடாவண்ணம் இரவும் பகலும் இங்குமங்கும் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். ஓர் ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் தண்ணீர் வரக் கண்டு அங்கிருந்த நோயாளிகளை யெல்லாம் மெதுவாக எடுத்துக்கொண்டு தகுந்த இடத்தில் கொண்டுபோய் விட்டார்கள்.
வெள்ளத்தினால் பெருத்த கஷ்டம் பாரீஸில் ஒரு பாகமாகிய ஆல்போர்வீல் என்னுமிடத்தில்தான். அங்கு தண்ணீர் சுமார் 25 அடி ஆழம் வரைக்கும் தங்கிற்று. அங்கு சுமார் 18,000 பேர்கள் தண்ணீரால் சூழப்பட்டுத் தம்தம் வீடுகளை விட்டு வெளியில் வர முடியவில்லை. இவ்விடத்தில் அநேக படகுகள் சென்று சுமார் 9,000 ஜனங்கள் வரைக்கும் மேல் ஜன்னல்கள் வழியாக இறங்கச்செய்து தப்பித்து விட்டனர். மற்றவர்கள் அங்கிருக்கும் ùஸாத்துகளைக் காக்கும் பொருட்டு வெளியில் செல்ல ஒப்புக்கொள்ளவில்லை. தங்களுக்கு என்ன கஷ்டம் நேர்ந்தாலும் தாங்கள் அங்கே யிருப்பதாகப் பிடிவாதம் செய்கிறார்கள்.

இதற்குத் தகுந்தாற்போல் இந்த ஆபத்து காலத்தில் அநேக அபாஷ் என்னும் திருடர்கள் இருட்டில் படகு போட்டுக் கொண்டு போய் காலி வீடுகளையும், கொஞ்சம் பேர்களிருக்கும் வீடுகளையும் கொள்ளையடிக்கிறார்கள்.
இந்தக் கொள்ளைக்காரர்களைப் பிடித்து நியாயஸ்தலத்தில் விசாரணைக்குக் கொண்டுவருவது இப்பொழுது அசாத்திய மாகையால், அவர்களை உடனே தண்டிக்கப் பின்வரும் விளம்பரத்தை அதிகாரிகள் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்.
“”அனுதாபமே காட்டக்கூடாது. ஆல்போர்வீலிலும் அதைச் சுற்றியிருக்கும் வீடுகளிலும் ராணுவச் சேவகர்கள் காபந்து செய்து வருகிறார்கள். அவர்களுக்குக் கொடுத்திருக்கும் கண்டிப்பான உத்தரவானது “கொள்ளை யடிக்கும்’ அபாஷ்களை உடனே சுட்டுவிட வேண்டியது”. இவ்வளவு கண்டிப்பான உத்தரவில்லாவிட்டால் அச்சமயத்தில் பந்தோபஸ்து செய்வது கஷ்டம்.
ஷான்ஸ்எலிúஸ என்னுமிடத்திலும் சிறிது தண்ணீர் ஏறிக்கொண்டு வருகிறது. அங்கிருக்கும் ஜனங்கள் மண்ணினாலும், சிமெண்ட் சுண்ணாம்புகளினாலும் சுவர் போட்டுத் தண்ணீரைத் தடுத்துக் கொண்டு வருகிறார்கள். லூவர் என்னும் அரண்மனைக்கு ஓர் ஆபத்தும் நேரிடாவண்ணம் பாதுகாக்கப்படுகிறது.

வெள்ளத் தண்ணீர் ஊரெல்லாம் பரவி, குடிக்கும் நீரைக் கெடுத்துவிட்டபடியால் ஜனங்களெல்லோரும் தண்ணீரைக் காய வைத்துக் குடிக்க வேண்டுமென்றும், கறிகாய்களை நன்றாக வேகவைத்துச் சாப்பிடும்படியும் அதிகாரிகள் விளம்பரம் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். நீர் வடிந்த உடனே வீட்டுக்குள் போவதாயிருந்தால் அங்கு அடைந்திருக்கும் சேறை நன்றாக வாரிவிட்டு சுண்ணாம்பு பூசி பிறகு வாசம் செய்யும்படி கேட்டுக்கொள்ளுகிறார்கள்.

பாரீஸ் நகரத்தில் ஜனங்களுக்கு இன்றுவரையில் சுகமாகவே ஆகாரம் கிடைத்து வந்தது. உணவுகள் ரயில் மார்க்கமாயும் படகு மார்க்கமாயும் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தன. இப்பொழுது வெள்ளம் அதிகமாய் பரவிப் பூமியை மூடிவிட்டபடியால் உணவுகளைப் பாரீஸுக்குள் கொண்டுபோக அஸாத்தியமாய் விட்டது. ரூ – தே – தொமீனிக் எனும் பாரீஸ் நகரத்தின் ஒரு பாகத்தில் ஜனங்கள் சென்ற புதன்கிழமை முதல் ஆகாரமில்லாமல் வெள்ளத்தால் அடைபட்டுக் கிடக்கிறார்கள்.
ஆகார விஷயமாக முதல் கலகமும் உண்டாய் விட்டது. பவுபோர்க் டெம்பில் எனும் ஒரு பாகத்தில் உணவின் விலையை உயர்த்திய இரண்டு ரொட்டிக் கிடங்குகள் பசியால் பீடிக்கப்பட்டு நிராசையாய் இருந்த ஜனங்களால் கொள்ளை யடிக்கப்பட்டன. ஐந்து வெடிகள் கலகக்காரர்களின் பேரில் ஒரு ஜன்னல் வழியாய்ப் பிரயோகிக்கப்பட்டன. ஒரு ஸ்திரீ காயமடைந்தாள்.

உணவுப் பொருள்கள் விலை யதிகமாய் விட்டபடியால் ஊரெங்கும் குழப்பமாய் இருக்கிறது. கலகங்கள் எங்கே நடக்கிறதோ என்று அதிகாரிகள் பயப்படுகிறார்கள். úஸன் கரையோரத்தில் போட்டிருந்த ஆர்லியன்ஸ் இருப்புப் பாதை இடிந்து விழுந்து போய்விட்டது. ஜனங்களின் துக்கம் சொல்லி முடியாது.
ஆயிரக்கணக்கான ஜனங்களுக்குத் தர்ம சாப்பாடு போட்டு தர்மத்திற்கு இடம் தரப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. தொத்துக் கொள்ளை வியாதி எங்கே உண்டாய் விடுகிறதோ என்ற பயம் இன்னும் அதிகரித்து வருகிறது. சாக்கடைக ளெல்லாம் எல்லாப் பாகத்திலும் உடைத்துக் கொண்டு ஓடுகின்றன.
மழை இன்னும் விட்டபாடில்லை. வானமே ஓட்டையாய் விட்டதுபோல் பொழிந்து கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. ஒரு வியாபாரமாவது நடைபெறவே யில்லை. தங்கள் தங்கள் காரிய ஸ்தலத்திற்குப் போக ஒருவருக்கும் ஸரிப்படவே யில்லை. காரிய ஸ்தலங்களுக்குப் போகலாமென்றால் வெள்ளத்தால் தடை.
அதையும் தாண்டிக் கொண்டு போனால் எந்த நிமிஷத்தில் புசல் மழையினால் வெள்ளம் அதிகப்பட்டுவிட்டால் வீட்டிலுள்ள பெண்டு பிள்ளைகளுக்கு அபாயம் வந்து விடுகிறதோ அல்லது அவர்களை உயிர் தப்ப வைத்து அப்பால் கொண்டு போவது அஸாத்தியமாய் விடுகிறதோ என்று இதே ஸதா எல்லாருக்கும் கவலையாய் இருக்கிறது.
பாரீஸில் நடுப்பட்டணம் வெள்ளத்தில் மூழ்கி ஒரு பெரிய ஏரிபோல் காணப்படுகிறது. சரித்திரங்களிலும் தற்காலத்திலும் பிரஸித்தி பெற்ற பல கட்டிடங்களை வெள்ளம் சூழ்ந்து கொண்டு விட்டது.
பிளாஸ் தெ-லா கொன்கொர்து, ஷான்ஸ் எலிúஸ இவற்றின் கோபுர வாசல்களைப் பலமாக மண், கல் முதலியவைகள் போட்டு அடைத்து விட்டார்கள். ùஸன்த் லொஜோ எனும் பாகமானது பலமான ஒரு பகுதி சேனையாட்களால் காக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. சில தெருக்களில் வெள்ளம் பெருகுவதும் குறைவதுமாய் இருக்கிறது. வீடுகளெல்லாம் இடிந்து விழுந்து கொண்டும் விழுந்து விடும்போலும் இருக்கின்றன.
ஸ்ரீ மகா நெப்போலியன் சேனா வீரர்களில் காயம் பட்டவர்களுக்காகக் கட்டிவைத்த ஒத்தேல் – தெùஸன் வலித் என்னும் கட்டிடத் தருகில் தெருக்களில் ஏழடி ஜலம் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது.

கிராண்ட் விலியர்ஸ் எனும் பெரிய அணைக்கட்டு உடைத்துக் கொண்டு அந்தப் பாகமெல்லாம் அநேக மைல் விஸ்தீர்ணமுள்ள ஒரு பெரிய ஏரிபோல் காணப்படுகிறது. ஜனங்களில் பெரும்பாலர் ஓடி உயிர் தப்பி விட்டார்கள். மற்றவர்கள் வெளியே போக முடியாமல் தங்கள் வீட்டிலேயே அடைபட்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.
பிளாஸ் – தெ – லோபேராவிலும், புல்வார்ட் – தெ – காப்புஸன்னிலும் வெள்ளம் சற்று தணிந்திருக்கிறது. ஆனால் விளக்குக் கம்பங்களும் மரங்களும் சில கட்டிடங்களும் விழுந்து கொண்டே இருக்கின்றன. பிரதான நகர சுரங்கக் குழாய் இருப்புப்பாதை யுள்ளிருந்து பேரிரைச்சலுடன் ஜலம் வெளியே வந்து விழுந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது.
இவ்வளவு நாசகரமான வெள்ளத்திற்கும் காரணம் என்னவென்றால் இதுவரையிலும் இல்லாத அவ்வளவு விசேஷமாய் பனிக்கட்டியுடன் இடைவிடாமல் மழை பெய்ததுதான்.
இந்த விபத்தால் கஷ்டப்படுகிறவர்களின் ஸஹாயத்திற்காகக் கிறிஸ்தவர்களின் பரமாசிரியரான மஹாகனம் பொருந்திய போப் என்பவர் ஒரு பெருந்தொகையான பணம் ஸஹாயம் செய்திருக்கிறார். லண்டன் மேயரும் ஒரு ஸஹாய நிதி ஏற்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார். இதற்குப் பிரிட்டிஷ் சக்கரவர்த்தி 1000 கினியும் அவருடைய பத்னி அலக்ஸாண்டிரா சக்ரவர்த்தினி 1000 பவுனும் நன்கொடையளித்தனர் என்று கேட்டு ஸந்தோஷிக்கிறோம்.

How two IAF pilots saved the day….

In a precarious mission, Wing Commander Charles Simon and Squadron Leader S Venkatramanan and crew rescued a woman in the final stage of pregnancy from atop a water tank in Chennai. She delivered twins the next day!

When Wing Commander Charles Simon and Squadron Leader S Venkatramanan launched their Cheetah helicopter from the Tambaram Air Force base on December 3, they had no idea what lay ahead that day.

Chennai had received its worst rainfall in 100 years on December 1-2 and the two Indian Air Force pilots along with several other helicopter pilots had been flying rescue missions from sunrise to sunset since December 1.

In the five days of the Chennai deluge, WinCo Simon and Sqn Ldr Venkat flew 30 sorties and did 36 rescues — but what they did on day 3 was not only unusual and praiseworthy but humanly touching.

With all communication lines broken down, the pilots received instructions from their operational control centre to rescue a young woman in the final stage of pregnancy. She was marooned on the roof of her home.

Armed only with approximate GPS coordinates, the pilots flew out in search of the pregnant woman. But what they encountered was a sea of houses with 10 to 12 people atop each roof.

It was the proverbial needle in a haystack kind of situation.

“We literally flew roof-to-roof in search of her. Since the sound of the chopper drowns all other sounds, we had to communicate in sign language with people on the roofs,” says Wing Commander Simon, a Category-A flying instructor at the IAF’s Flying Instructors School.

The very best of pilots make it to Category-A; they are entrusted with the task of training future instructors.

“There were around 1,000 people on different terraces and it was hard to spot her. We were circling for 10, 15 minutes and it seemed there was no hope of finding her,” adds co-pilot Squadron Leader Venkatramanan, a Chennai native who will complete ten years in the IAF next week.

“I was on the left side of the chopper and looking at every woman if she had a bump,” he says with good humour on the phone from Chennai.

Just then they spotted Deepthi Velchamy, the lady they had set out to rescue. Since her pregnancy would not permit her to be winched up, the pilots indicated that she be brought to the top of the water tank on the terrace.

Some personnel wearing orange overalls, indicative of the National Disaster Relief Force, were also on the terrace. They put Deepthi in a chair and positioned her on the tank.

The pilots, accompanied by Corporals Arun Singh and Rahul Kumar, meanwhile, circled around and made the approach. As WinCo Simon maouvered the chopper, Sqn Ldr Venkat seated on the side of the water tank, provided vital verbal navigation.

“Left… Left… Lower… Steady… Stop… Stop…” Sqn Ldr Venkat’s instructions must have sounded somewhat like this.

The chopper hovered low, its left skid (the Cheetah has sleigh-like landing gear) gently touched the water tank; its right skid was in the air. Deepthi was helped into the aircraft; tears were running down her face.

Sqn Ldr Venkat gestured to her that all would be okay and ten minutes later, they brought her to the Tambaram Air Base, where an Air Force lady gynaecologist awaited her. According to the rules, rescued civilians are flown to the air base and handed over to the civil administration.

It was here that Deepthi revealed that she was due for delivery that day itself and hers was a complicated case. Her medical papers were not with her and she needed to be urgently admitted to the Ramachandran Hospital that was aware of her medical history.

Since the roads were blocked and water-logged, the pilots were given clearance to airlift her to the hospital. At the medical college hospital, WinCo Simon was lucky to find a basketball court to land the chopper.

Deepthi delivered twin girls the following day. With all communication lines down, her request for rescue was conveyed to the authorities by her concerned sister in America.

Overwhelmed by the circumstances, her husband Karthik told the Press Trust of India, ‘I salute these brave men.’

But the two pilots say they are trained for situations like this.

“Hovering with a skid on a rooftop and with limited reference is challenging,” says WinCo Simon who was part of the team that rebuilt the Car Nicobar Air Force base after the 2004 tsunami.

“It was team work of pilots and crew. We are trained for such ops and the IAF is always geared up for any mission as the situation demands.”

The IAF operated 13 helicopters in torrential rain and marginal weather, flying 195 sorties, airlifting 450 stranded people, including women, infants and senior citizens. They rescued some other pregnant women too. Transport aircraft airlifted 30 National Disaster Relief Force teams, five Indian Army columns and also evacuated 770 stranded civilians.

“Personally, it was a very satisfying task, while professionally every helicopter pilot is trained to accomplish these kind of tasks,” says Sqn Ldr Venkat, who has flown rescue ops in Kashmir in the winter snowfall of 2008-2009.

“Once you are in the cockpit and start flying, you need all your skills and follow the rules. That is what we keep in mind while flying without getting too emotional about what we achieve,” he adds.

Both the pilots have done stints with the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Congo and are the first ones in their families to join the armed forces. They are quite surprised with the interest their mission has elicited, and attribute it to a video that one onlooker shot and uploaded on YouTube.

“My parents were quite thrilled because I am the only one in the family to make to the TV news,” laughs Sqn Ldr Venkat.

After the IAF wound down its ops in Chennai, the two pilots visited the hospital to meet the new mother and twin girls. They carried two bouquets on behalf of Air Chief Marshal Arup Kumar Raha. Since the babies were in the ICU, they could not see them, but were inundated with thank yous from the family.

“Saving somebody’s life is unparalleled,” says Wing Commander Simon, “It is something that will last a lifetime.”

” How One Pair of Chappals Changed the Lives of Two Brothers…”

Here’s a heartwarming story that will bring home the lesson that the simplest of things in life cannot be taken for granted.

Ranjeet and Sanjeet are two brothers, enrolled with us for free tuition classes. Sons of a rickshaw puller, they would occasionally substitute for their father in the rickshaw queue at the metro station, waiting for new customers while their father would drink a quick cup of tea. Stopping this practice became our pre condition to teaching them, and they agreed.

Before I proceed further, you need to know, who “we” are and why do these children come to “us.”

I think most of us have an in-built desire to help others. It takes shape in many ways – trying to teach an underprivileged person is one of them.

Ranjeet and Sanjeet

In a place like India, where domestic servants are generally illiterate, in many households you will see the lady of the house trying to teach the basics of language and maths to the help in the house. I also grew up seeing my mother teaching our domestics. Our servants sitting next to her in the winter, peeling peas and reciting tables, was a common sight. Even the sabziwala would take out his notebook after giving her the vegetables and would show her his homework!

After quitting my job as a computer teacher to start my own NGO, I started helping out the children of my maidservant in their studies. My good friend Radha was also doing the same thing, but in a much better way. She had asked the children she taught to bring their friends as well and was taking daily classes for them.

In the winter, both of us decided to sit in the sun and continue with our classes together – where I would teach the children maths and science, while Radha took care of English, general knowledge and moral science.

It gave us a lot of visibility and some other maids, guards, our society plumber, etc., also started enquiring if they could bring their children to us to study. Soon, “free tuitions bymadam log” became popular.

We were also lucky to get some wonderful volunteers. Mrs. Bawa had retired as a principal and took to the job as a fish to water. Sheetala, Shashi and Sangeeta became regular teachers. That forced us to become more organised and we divided the children according to age groups and set up a timetable for the study of different subjects.

Now, Radha and I run these classes in two shifts in our respective homes, based on the government school timings in our building. Since the government school teaches girls in the morning and boys in the afternoon, we have the opposite schedule – we teach boys in the morning and girls in the evening.

Ranjeet and Sanjeet are two of our students. Though real brothers, they are poles apart in their nature and intelligence level. While one has a flair for maths and is blessed with a photographic memory, he is restless and lacks interest in the regular way of learning. The other one makes up for his low IQ with his sincerity and hard work.

The two boys are generally on no talking terms with each other. We soon realised they never come to the classes together. Rather, they would take turns to attend the classes. We thought the reason for this was sibling rivalry and didn’t give the matter a second thought. Until one fine day, when I had only two students, I managed to get the introvert brother in a talking mood.

Besides other things, the shocking truth emerged as to why they don’t attend the classes together. The bone of contention here was the one pair of chappals (slippers) that both the brothers were supposed to share.

I remember watching an award winning foreign film (Afghan I think) on TV once, where a brother and sister were sharing a pair of running shoes. It was a beautiful touching story, very well narrated – convincing to me because it was happening far away in some war affected country. But believe me, in my wildest dreams I wouldn’t have believed that such things happen right under our nose, in the capital of our country no less and not in any remote village!

I discussed the matter with the other volunteers and soon “Project Chappal” was launched. In order to help maintain the dignity of the boys we decided to buy slippers for all the children.

We were keen to get some good quality branded stuff but they vetoed it. All of them had seen and liked something or the other in the local shukkar bazaar (Friday market) and wanted to buy from there.

Without mobile phones, assembling at one place in the crowded market was a major task. But they coordinated beautifully and even bargained with the shopkeepers, making sure that all the little ones bought something slightly bigger than their current size that they could grow into.

For most of them it was the first time they were taken to any shop and allowed to choose something on their own. There were no parents around to force decisions on them and, as far as we were concerned, the entire bill was way below our budget. We started looking around to see what we could buy them next – T-shirts or caps for the boys and leggings for the girls!

Once the shopping was over and they were allowed to wear their new purchases back home, their happiness knew no bounds. We found so much joy in looking at their innocent faces beaming with pride.

What a contrast to children from affluent families! You come across so many of them in leading malls these days, purchasing footwear at exorbitant prices – but they hardly look happy because it’s no big deal for them.

The shopping trip worked as a big incentive for our kids to be regular in attendance and to do so many other things properly too. We learnt a lot from making a small difference in their lives. We never knew that spending a small amount of money would bring so much happiness to them and us.

As far as Sanjeet and Ranjeet are concerned, they are almost regular now. At least they keep smiling at each other. With Sanjeet, talking is not easy in any case. The best part is that they will never know the other children owe them something and should be thankful to them – for all their new chappals!

This 77-Year-Old Retired Engineer Made Thousands of Bengalureans Think of the Environment This Year…

Unfortunately, festivities and filth go hand in hand these days. But N.S. Ramakanth is on a mission to ensure that people celebrate festivals more responsibly and do not contaminate their environment in the process. He has been fighting for a cleaner Bengaluru for several years and recently executed a successful cleanliness drive after the Ganesha festival.

N.S. Ramakanth left his job as chief engineer with a German company and came back to Bengaluru in 1989 when his mother fell sick. On returning to his birthplace, he was appalled to see the polluted and filthy environment in the city. He decided not to take up another job but to devote his time to raising awareness about the poor waste management in the metropolis.

Now 77 years old and still going strong, Ramakanth can be seen chasing municipal corporation officials of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to clean up the filthy lakes in the city.

He also hounds bureaucrats to solve garbage problems, encourages citizens to get involved with civic issues, and motivates volunteers when they conduct cleanliness drives.

Quite recently, Ramakanth was seen running a successful campaign to minimise the waste generated during the Ganesha festival at Sankey Tank, a man-made lake in western Bengaluru.

“After the festival, tonnes of garbage can be found around the water bodies. We need to come up with solutions to stop this kind of mess from happening again and again. We also need to carry out effective operations to clean the area after festivals. But the first step is to spread awareness among people to minimise the waste,” he says.

In keeping with this line of thinking, Ramakanth first prepared a small 10-minute skit to engage city residents. Along with a few volunteers, he performed the play in different places to raise awareness about how people generate huge amounts of waste during the festival.

The skit had an interesting script. Lord Ganesha sends Narada to the earth to check on the celebrations of the Ganesha festival. When Narada comes to earth he sees drunk people dancing, noisy crackers being burnt, and broken Ganesha idols lying around after the festivities. Narada reports this to Ganesha who is so hurt by people’s behaviour that he decides not to give any phal to them,” says Ramakanth.

Apart from the skit, Ramakanth also organised eco-friendly Ganesha idol making workshops for the public. He also brought local artisans from the outskirts of the city to different localities within Bengaluru.

Thanks to his efforts, a larger number of people opted for clay Ganesha idols this year.

“People were saying that local artisans work too far away and it is not feasible to go there to get mud idols. So I brought the artisans close to their residential areas to get them to avoid using plaster of Paris (PoP) and plastic idols,” he says.

Many people also said they wanted bigger idols and mud idols were not available in large sizes. Ramakanth had a solution to this as well. He helped the citizens get customised mud idols, which were five to six feet tall. “I thought it important to provide them with solutions. This is how they will welcome change,” he says.

He also talked to them about the harmful effects of PoP idols and how animals and water creatures die due to the immersion of such idols in water bodies. Ramakanth’s regular interventions and awareness sessions were a huge success and many people in his locality opted for eco-friendly Ganesha idols.

He also advised people to immerse the Ganesha idols in small drums in their own homes and then feed the water to plants rather than going to public water bodies for immersion.

“I don’t understand why people travel so far to dispose the idols. It creates so much noise and pollution. They should celebrate the festival in a neat and healthy way,” says Ramakanth.

After spreading awareness about celebrating the festival more responsibly, it was now time to take up a cleanliness drive.

Kalyani, a small step-well near Sankey Tank, is the site of idol immersions every year and collects a large quantity of filth. Ramakanth had the well cleaned within a week and collected truckloads of the dumped idols to put on display for the citizens to see.

He then pumped out the highly polluted, thick, black remains in the Kalyani to a nearby drain. About 12-15 BBMP workers manually bucketed out the sludge. “All the sewage is supposed to be routed to an STP. But even then, it won’t treat mercury and lead. And that’s something we have no solution for right now,” says Ramakanth.

He sent all the flowers and leaf rejects for composting to eliminate the stink from the well.

“We made sure that segregation of all the biodegradable waste took place at the spot and sent it for composting immediately,” he adds.

As the senior most member of the Solid Waste Management Round Table, he worked for hours instructing civic officials to keep the work going to minimise pollution in the tank water.

Ramakanth tracked the number of idols immersed over the period of 11 days. A total of 1,28,620 idols went into the Kalyani this year. Of these, 61,620 were made of clay and the rest (67,000) were PoP idols.

“I just wanted to see if the awareness campaigns had made any impact on the people. I was impressed. The progress was not bad at all. Almost 50 percent of them were clay idols this year and this was a big achievement,” says Ramakanth.

Ramakanth’s journey does not end here. He is persuading BBMP to completely ban PoP idols from hereon. He has also asked the Pollution Control Board to put up the names of potters who make larger clay Ganesha idols on its website so that people can make use of them.

While changing mindsets and habits may seem like an overwhelming task, Ramakanth is not to be deterred. He has high hopes of making his beloved city pollution and filth free in the future.
