A President’s work is never done. Between being ribbed by Bill Cinton and shown up by FLOTUS on Twitter, Barack Obama has enough non-Presidential matters to keep him occupied without this.

‘This’ being a little kid’s full-blown temper tantrum at a White House do with POTUS, FLOTUS and other West Wing bigwigs looking on.

Take a look at this amazing image going viral all over the internet.

The photo – of epic proportions, may we say – was taken at the annual White House Passover Seder held last month.

In the picture, little Claudia Moser lies face-down on the carpet in what parents will recognize as classic tantrum pose. What makes the picture even more adorable is the expression on Obama’s face, as if he were saying “you see what I have to deal with?”

The tantrum however has made Claudia a hit on the internet.

The attitude of the worshipper and the worshipped is the seed of devotion (bhakthi). First, the worshipper’s mind is attracted by the special qualities of the object of worship. The worshipper tries to acquire these special qualities. This is spiritual discipline (Sadhana). In the early stages of spiritual discipline, the distinction between worshipper and worshipped is clear, but as the sadhana progresses, it diminishes and, when attainment is reached, there is no distinction whatsoever. Whatever be the object of worship that you love and seek through sadhana, have firm faith that you and He are one. You must entertain only one wish: the realisation of the Lord (Iswara Sakshatkara). Give no room in the mind for any other wish. Then regardless of joy and sorrow, without any worry about your own satisfaction, you will engage in spiritual discipline firmly, uninterruptedly, with full conviction; and once you understand the Reality, you will have full contentment.

Meet Saravanan….Chennai Super King’s Super Fan ….!!!

Saravanan has attained the status of Chennai Super Kings’ super fan and is a hugely popular figure at the Chepauk. (BCCI)

The afternoon sun is at its harshest in Chennai, as it always is during May. The Chennai Super Kings players arrive at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chepauk and get set for another match in the most testing of conditions. Right opposite the stadium, despite the scorching heat, H Saravanan, arguably their biggest fan, is busy with his own preparation: getting his body covered in yellow paint with the name ‘Dhoni’ and the number ‘7′ written in bold across his chest.

Three years ago, Saravanan was threatened by security personnel when he went to the team hotel with a hope of meeting MS Dhoni. Now, he travels with the Chennai team for all their Indian Premier League matches, interacts with the players like he’s a part of the side and even leads their victory lap after their final home match.

Saravanan is the Chennai version of Sudhir Kumar Chaudhry, the Sachin Tendulkar fanatic – that rare fan who almost sacrifices their own life to follow their heroes.

Saravanan, like Chaudhry, hails from a modest background. His father is an autorickshaw driver and mother a housewife. But, unlike Sudhir, who abandoned his family and job to dedicate his life to follow Tendulkar and now the Indian team, Saravanan has a stable job as a warehouse in-charge at a construction material company in Chennai. By his own admission, Saravanan is “nowhere close to Sudhir”, but stresses that Dhoni and Chennai are his “life and biggest priority”.

“Sudhir is great. He has done a lot and he’s definitely an inspiration,” says Saravanan, even as the painter carries on with his job. “I’m nowhere near and I can’t even be compared with him. But Tendulkar already has such a fan and I wanted Dhoni also to have one such fan. More importantly, I wanted to be that fan.”

Initially a fan of Tendulkar, Saravanan’s admiration for Dhoni started after India’s victory in the 2007 World T20. It took an accident in 2010 and a World Cup victory under Dhoni in 2011 to inspire him to make the leap to being a super-fan.

“My only ambition then (2007) was to get an autograph from Dhoni,” he recalls. “But I didn’t know where and how to proceed with it as he had no connection with Chennai and I had no connection with cricketers. Luckily for me, in 2008, he came to Chennai through the IPL and I sensed a chance.”

At first, Saravanan was just like any other fan, only his face painted while supporting Chennai. “I met with an accident and injured my leg in December 2010 and was stuck to bed for six months. It forced me to watch every single match of the 2011 World Cup and the IPL. India won the World Cup and

Chennai won the IPL, so it was a double boost for me and my love for Dhoni grew rapidly. I wasn’t there for 1983 World Cup, so this really moved me. I badly wanted to do something in return for Dhoni.”

The injury forced him to miss the 2012 IPL as well, but his passion didn’t wane. In 2013, he started painting his entire body, and instantly became a hit among spectators in Chennai. Friends and relatives mocked him, but Saravanan had already become a mini-celebrity in the stands, with people queueing up to take pictures with him.

Lack of funds and Chennai’s home matches moving out of the city were major roadblocks, but Saravanan worked his way around both and gradually became an official fan of the franchise. A fellow Chennai supporter created a social media profile in his name and after repeated requests, the franchise officials agreed to take him along for a couple of matches in Ranchi during the Champions League Twenty20 2013.

“That was the first time I went away from Chennai to watch a match,” he says. “Again in 2014, there were no matches in Chennai. I had become a fanatic by then and couldn’t imagine the possibility of missing Chennai’s matches. Kasi Viswanathan, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association secretary, helped me a lot and the franchise took me to all matches during the India leg of the tournament. It cost me Rs 50000 in 2013 but the franchise takes care of most of my expenses now and I have seen all Chennai matches in India from then.

“I missed only one match,” he admits, “because I got engaged that day. The first time I met my fiancee, I told her very clearly that this is my life and my biggest priority. Everything else comes after this.”

Saravanan’s routine starts five hours before a match. He rents a room opposite the stadium and gets his friend, who is no professional painter, to completely paint his body in yellow. On an average, around 15 small bottles of paint are used and Saravanan has to stand throughout the painstaking process. He does not sit even during the match to avoid the paint peeling off and consumes only water during the whole period, which comes to around 11 hours.

Finally, it all seemed to pay off, when at an event in Bangalore last year, he met his idol.

“I went fully painted as I wanted him to see me like that first time,” he says, the pride in his voice evident. “Suresh Raina, Brendon McCullum and Ravindra Jadeja walked in front of me and I was looking at them, when Dhoni suddenly came from behind. I was speechless and immediately fell at his feet. He lifted me and spoke something, but I couldn’t understand anything as it was all in Hindi. I have a language problem with him and the only thing I know is that he calls me ‘yellow man’.

“I share a good rapport with some other players too. R Ashwin often asks me with concern why I do all this and why I spoil my body, but, luckily, I’ve not had any allergy or skin problems until now. I’m not scared of it.”

In a tournament where squads and loyalties are fluid, Saravanan is an exception. Is all this worth it though?

“Definitely. I don’t expect anything for what I do,” he says. “All this is only for happiness. When fans call me Dhoni when I walk on the street with the paint on, I feel happy … I’m Chennai’s Dhoni. He’s Ranchi’s Dhoni.”

“This is The Pinnacles in Western Australia. The sunset was breathtaking. I was a full moon night. This day I discovered that on the night of the full moon it rises at exactly the same time as the sun sets. The sunset and moon rising: so exciting!”

I first visited Uluru in August 2013, but it was raining. So I decided to go back earlier this year for a proper look at the most famous sunrise, sunset and stars in Australia. This is one of the many shots I took.”

“Before I visited Australia, I had never heard of Uluru! Then I saw a photo of the rock and the stars and decided to try for a shot of Uluru and the full arc of the Milky Way. This image is made up of 25 different shots, a 180 degree panorama with 14mm lens, 2.8 aperture taking 30 seconds: then post-production work in Lightroom and Photoshop, hours of work. I’m very pleased with the end result.”

“On the way to Cahill’s Lookout, I met a girl living in Katoomba who knew a secret spot. It was stunning. The Blue Mountains is perfect for meditation: great nature, amazing lookouts and rolling valleys.”

Heading up to Darwin after my first visit to Uluru, the sun came out after a rainy week, and it was stunning. I went for a different perspective, waiting for the sun to drop below the clouds: capturing a beautiful sunset.”

“I lived in Darwin for three months and it was heavenly. I arrived at the end of the rainy season in early April, and it was still so hot I had to to hit the pool every day just to cool down. Darwin was incredible, every day served up the most beautiful, breathtaking sunsets.”

7. Bay of Fires, Tasmania.

“I arrived in Tassie with a friend on Christmas Day 2013, and we hitchhiked around for three weeks. This was the first time I saw white sand. We camped on this beach. Tasmania is probably my favourite state, it’s so pure, clean and genuine.”

Whitehaven Beach, Queensland.

“Believe the hype, this is the most beautiful beach in the world. I shot this image from Hill Inlet lookout, it’s a panorama made up of 35 images. I was on a Queensland road-trip with three German friends. Because I was working for voyagerloin.com webzine I got some amazing free tours, including this three day three-day cruise on Solway Lass around the Whitsundays. Whitehaven is simply the best beach I have ever seen, the sand is so fine. There’s really no way to describe this beach – you have to experience it for yourself.”

“This is zoomed in on the sand spit were we stopped for a swim. The water is a perfect colour: just crazy!?

10. Heart Reef, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland.

“This was shot from a seaplane. I’d been lucky enough to take a trip over the GBR off Cairns by helicopter, and it is the most beautiful thing I have seen in my life. This was the same feeling . We landed on the sea and got out of the plane and snorkeled in pristine waters, no human had swum in before. Truly unforgettable.”

11. Gunlom Falls, Kakadu National Park, NT.

This is like a natural infinity pool, with big falls on the other side going. I went with Elisa Detrez, Best Job In The World winner.”

12. Kangaroo Island, South Australia.

“Out of this world. I went on a two day tour, stayed in a lodge and saw LOADS of wildlife. KI has amazing sea lions, pelicans, dolphins, kangaroos and wallabies. This image shows the Milky Way in a single shot with a 30 second exposure and also two other galaxies.”

13. Katherine Gorge, Northern Territory.

“One of the NT’s natural wonders, with eight interlinked gorges. This was the night of a blood moon. We got a stunning sunset. It was the end of the wet season, so we still couldn’t swim because of crocodiles.”

14. Karijini National Park, Western Australia.

“People I met said said you have to go to two national parks above all others: Karijini and Kakadu. I spent three days here walking and doing tracks, just after rains, sometimes I rhad to walk with water right to my shoulder. Freshwaters pool, heaps of natural pools, gorges everywhere.”

15. Margaret River, Western Australia.

“We were just driving looking for a free campsite, then saw this huge mob of kangaroos. During the golden hour just before dusk you see them popping up everywhere. The great thing about road-tripping it that you can just pull off the highway and take pictures.”

16. Kakadu, Northern Territory.

“I shot this panorama in the Kakadu on the way back to Darwin, driving at night. Saw this amazing sky and basically said “I have to shot that!” The Red light is light from our 4WD’s headlamps, it really was in the middle of nowhere.

17. Loch Ard Gorge, Great Ocean Road, Victoria.

“This was early in my stay and the first image that Tourism Australia posted on social media. The Great Ocean Road reminded me of Normandy in France. This was taken on a short road-trip from Melbourne when four girls and I rented a car.”

18. Nudey Beach, Fitzroy Island, FNQ.

“One of the most photographed beaches in Queensland, a day trip from Cairns. I stayed a few nights, the lodge was amazing. The islands of Far North Queensland are the perfect place to relax, just chilling on the beach. Swimming and snorkeling in stunningly warm waters.”

19. Rainbow Beach, Queensland.

“This is the Great Sandy National Park. You have these massive sand dunes, perfect for viewing sunrises and sunsets. These two guys made a great silhouette.”

20. Sydney Harbour, New South Wales.

“This is in the calm before sunrise, with no boats in the harbour. I like shooting at sunrise better, there is more blue and pink in the sky. Sydney is one of my favourite cities in the world.”

21. Shell Beach, Shark Bay, Western Australia

“This entire beach is made up of tiny shells, billions of them! The guys in the shot are my travel buddies, a German guy and a British guys, looking at a jellyfish.”

22. Wallaman Falls, Queenland.

“This is the tallest single drop waterfall in Australia, at 268m. It’s quite a trek in and when you get there you just sit and meditate, and think “Wow. How small am ?” The track is really steep so you need to be fit.”

23. Uluru, Northern Territory.

“I read in the Lonely Planet guide that even the most experienced travelers are amazed when they first Uluru. When I saw it on the horizon I couldn’t believe how massive it was. It was wet, but I realised I was really lucky as only one percent of visitors see it under rain. But I had to go back to see the rock with blue skies.”

Cordoba is an ancient city in the south of Spain, the capital of Moorish Spain. The city is a virtual maze of winding streets, modern and antique merchandise, dotted by colorful coffee shops, which at night move to the spontaneous beat of flamenco dancing. Here visitors find the ‘Calleja de las Flores’ – the street of flowers!

The city is located on the banks of the Guadalquivir river, and its easy access to the mining resources of the Sierra Morena (coal, lead, zinc) satisfies the population’s needs.

During the 10th century, it was the second richest city in the Muslim empire (after Bagdad), to which learned men from all Europe came to study during the 11th and 12th centuries

The city eventually declined, especially during Renaissance times. In the 18th century it was reduced to just 20,000 inhabitants. The population and economy started to increase only in the early 20th century.

Whale rainbows

I didn’t know whales could produce their own rainbows, but … they can.

Here’s a collection of photos, and a video, of rainbows made by whales. Atmospheric Optics guru Les Cowley told me:

These are rainbows made by drops from the whale’s blowholes rather than the more usual raindrops.

These are true rainbows, not iridescence like the iridescence you sometimes see in clouds. Les told me:

Iridescence can be anywhere but it is most common close to the sun. The colors are disordered and pastel.

Rainbows (at least the everyday ones!) are opposite the sun. Their colors are always in the order red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

Whales’ blowholes, of course – which are their noses – are on the top of their heads. A whale breathes through its blowhole, but, contrary to any whale cartoons you might have seen, whales don’t actually blow water through their blowholes. Instead, they blow out a combination of air (they breathe out carbon dioxide, just as we human mammals do) and mucus. A whale’s out-breath is warm from the whale’s warm body, just as your out-breath is warm. In the colder and lower-pressure air above, water vapor that’s present condenses out above the whale as droplets.

It’s this spray of fine droplets, known as the blow, that creates the rainbow.
