As India marks its 69th Independence Day, The Internet finds itself flooded with celebratory videos. Several are versions of the National Anthem but none are as powerful a reminder of what it means to be independent in India than this one.

Uploaded by Yathartha Pictures on YouTube, this is Jana Gana Mana sung by the third gender. Seven transgenders or hijras, as they are known in India, take centre stage to perform a goosebump-inducing, beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.

The message in this video goes beyond patriotism. It celebrates the Supreme Court’s landmark 2014 judgment which recognised transgenders as the third gender, assigning them their own identity and directing the government to provide them with quotas in jobs and education. The ruling allows transgenders to make their own choices of profession, helping many dreams come true.

The seven transgender participants in the video are all dressed in outfits or uniforms that signal the career choices they can now make – they can be doctors, chefs, police inspectors, lawyers. They can now be anything they want.
“The idea behind this video is to show that just like Indian men and women, Indian Hijras too have the right to choose an employment which fits their talent, skill and passion,” it says in the descriptor of the video.

” Why Do we Need to be in Mad Rush all the time …”?

In an Independence Day Special series, Rediff.com celebrates India through the lives of her people.

Today: Ashok Kumar Mondol, who drives the tram, a timeless Kolkata classic. Kolkata is the only city in India where you can ride a tram.

I have been driving a tram in Kolkata for 32 years. The most picturesque parts of the route that I take are around Esplanade and the areas surrounding Fort William and Kolkata Maidan.

There is greenery all around and when it rains the entire area looks magical. On a rainy day, I feel like jumping out of this tram car. I feel like singing and dancing and getting drenched. But I can’t. My task is but to ferry the passengers to their desired destinations.

Every time I pass the Maidan, I fall in love with this city all over again.

My father was a Calcutta Tramways Company conductor. In his times, the pay scale at CTC was poor and he had a tough time taking care of our family of five.

After studying till Class 8, I was forced to leave school and share the burden of household responsibility.

I was good in studies and wanted to clear the Class 12 examination at least. But Baba desperately needed another earning member in the family. He needed to marry two of my sisters off.

I started trying for jobs. It wasn’t easy. Then a friend of my father said the CTC was hiring.

I applied and got selected. It has been a long bond of more than three decades. Loyalty with CTC runs in my family.

I lost my mother a few years back, my family now comprises my father, wife and two sons. We have a house in the southern suburb of Sonarpur.

My eldest son holds a master’s degree and works in a private company while the younger one is doing his graduation.
As I have served the state government for so many years, I don’t have much faith in private companies. Hence, I have asked my eldest son to apply for jobs in the CTC. It is obvious that with his qualification, he won’t be a tram driver like me!

A tram driver’s life isn’t easy. Though a tram doesn’t pollute, emissions from other vehicles that ply on the roads clog my lungs and at times it seems as if I can’t breathe. There are too many cars and buses on the roads now.

On returning home from work the first thing I do is take a long, leisurely, bath. There is so much dirt on the roads.

I talk to my wife and Baba over lunch and the three of us catch a short nap in the afternoon.

As my younger son goes to college, we get to see each other mostly in the evenings. I drive the tram from the CTC office till Esplanade every day.

I can’t understand why other Indian states don’t opt for trams. They are the most environment-friendly mode of transport. It is slow, but then why do we need to be in a mad rush all the time?

A tram car is hassle-free and most easy to control. Accidents rarely happen here.

In my long career, I faced an emergency only once when the tram I was driving got derailed because of a sudden electrical wire break, injuring a couple of people. But apart from that, the running has been pretty smooth.

Earlier, a traffic jam could never delay a tram. But now, traffic congestion is a major issue for us. Vehicles from every corner block the roads and also the tram tracks. Often an hour-long journey takes more than two hours.
Travel by a tram is a great stress buster. It is sure to soothe one’s nerves and I often see the rich getting into my tram with the chauffeurs of their cars following their masters.

Conditioned air inside costly cars can’t hold a candle to fresh natural air.

Celebrities generally avoid public transport, but once I had seen actor Chiranjit (Dipak Chakraborty, now a Trinamool Congress member of the legislative assembly) in my tram car. It was a red letter day for me.

I had taken his autograph and he had smiled at me.

My day starts at 5 in the morning and ends at 1 pm. I report for work around 6 am and wind up around 12.30 pm.

On reaching the depot, I sign the register and set out on my daily journey from Tollygunge to Esplanade.

On a light day or on weekends, I manage 3, even 4 trips whereas on a heavy weekday or during rains I manage 2 trips at the most.

I get short breaks in between trips and have breakfast at the CTC depot canteen.

I travel from home to the nearest metro rail station by an autorickshaw and then reach the Tollygunge Metro Station (recently rechristened Mahanayak Uttam Kumar Metro Station by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee). I follow the same route on the way back.

As the CTC depot is situated right opposite the metro station, travelling is really convenient. It takes me 30, 40 minutes to travel one way.
In recent times, CTC has revised its pay scales to a large extent and my gross salary now stands at Rs 30,000 a month. It is not huge, but enough to cater to the needs of a middle-class family like ours.

Besides, my elder one is also contributing these days and we don’t have anything to complain.

There was a time when CTC salaries were irregular. But not any more. Now, things are looking up.

Music was my passion from childhood and Ma had got me admitted to Bani Chakra (a well-known music school).

I learnt my music lessons quickly and was referred to as a shining star.

My parents thought a career in music would put me on the wrong track of life and my name was struck off Bani Chakra’ roster soon after.

India is a fascinating country. I am so proud to be born here.

I feel the country can be a superpower only if our political leaders stop looking at us, the people, as ballot papers.

We elect them, but the moment they ascend the throne of power, they start disowning us. This attitude has to change.

But it is also unfair to put the blame on the political leaders all the time. We, the citizens, too have some responsibility to make India a better place.

Why should we bribe to get our job done? Why should we evade taxes? Why should we be mean and divisive?

Isn’t it our responsibility to keep our motherland clean?

After Indrani Roy/Rediff.com spoke to Mr Mondol at the CTC depot in Kolkata, she rode the tram with him.

He took her around a wet canopy of trees in the city’s famed sprawling Maidan, the Victoria Memorial, Fort William and unending Mayo Road — showing her own city to her in a way she had never seen before.

The minimum tram fare is Rs 5 and the maximum Rs 6. A ride in the heritage tram costs Rs 10.

” When a Problem Arises , Become the Captain of the Problem and Defeat it…” Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam

Once, during his Presidency, President A P J Abdul Kalam received a letter from a student shocked with his class 12th mark-sheet.

He had secured 10 per cent in Maths and Physics, whereas throughout his school career, he had always scored 90 per cent and above.

In utter dismay, he wrote to the President of India, asking for his help.

President Kalam referred his case to the authorities and two weeks later got a reply that indeed there was a mistake in the evaluation and a rectification had been done.

In the last 15 years, President Kalam — arguably India’s most popular President and among the founders of the country’s space programme — has interacted with 18 million young Indians, face-to-face, through e-mail and over Facebook.

He receives 300 e-mails everyday.

Some of these letters have been turned into his latest book Forge Your Future, which provides an insight into the issues which concern and engage the minds of young Indians today. President Kalam’s replies are based on his personal experiences, his reading and his interactions with political and spiritual leaders.

The title of the book was selected after an online public vote.

In his quiet bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi, President Kalam speaks to Archana Masih/Rediff.com about India becoming a developed country by 2020-2022, the heroes he admires, how 90 per cent of India’s space programme is intended for the people and the individual’s potential to become unique.

Dr Kalam, please can you tell me a little about your daily schedule? What’s it like 

The garden here has a 107-year old tree. Edwin Lutyens himself built and stayed in this house — so he maybe somewhere here (laughs).

His relatives had come to see this building.

The 107-year-old tree is beautiful. Parrots and various other birds live at the top and at the bottom live peacocks. Every year there are baby peacocks. I have a very bioactive tree.

I walk for 1 hour and 15 minutes every day. I spend time in my library.

In a month, I spend 15 days travelling in India. For ten days in a year, I go abroad. I am an honorary professor at the University of Beijing.

Every month, I meet a minimum of 100,000 young people. A million people in a year. So far I have met 18 million young people below the age of 25 in my country.

You get 300 e-mails everyday and spend two hours answering them. When did this process begin? When did you start actively engaging with young people?

It all started when I wrote Wings of Fire, in which I conveyed my life, how I had lived it, how I got myself educated, how I started meeting youth…

I was also teaching at Anna University at that time. After my work as scientific advisor, then projector director SLV 3, programme director AGNI — after all that I went in 2001 to Anna University as a professor.

I also get some handwritten letters. I consider them very important and I love to reply to them because they come from people from the grassroots who do not have access to the Internet. They come with unique questions and I have to give unique answers.

APJ Abdul Kalam

You mention what President Mandela told you about courage in your book — who are some of the most inspiring world leaders you have met?

Two world leaders exclusively come to my mind — Mahatma Gandhi and his unique life. Similarly, Nelson Mandela. I went to the prison where Mandela lived.

Where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. That’s the example of Mahatma Gandhi throughout his life.

In 2006, I travelled in the same kind of train with a steam engine from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. I could imagine the courage which Gandhiji showed in that cold winter.

Ahimsa dharma came after the battle of Kalinga. It transformed King Ashoka. The second time ahimsa dharma was put into action was by Mahatma Gandhi at Pietermaritzburg.

This book gives three messages. First: You can become a unique personality. Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela were unique.

The other important thing about this book is about continuously acquiring knowledge. Thirdly, when the problem arises — become the captain of the problem and defeat it.

You envisioned a growth plan for India called Vision 2020. How close are we to achieving that vision, in view of that deadline being six years away?

Actually India 2020 is a vision for an economically developed India by 2020. Up to 2008 our GDP was 8 to 9 per cent. Then there was a problem across the Atlantic Ocean, and our GDP crashed to 6 to 7 per cent, then to 5.5 and then to 5 per cent.

So in the 2008-2014 period, we had a slack in our development programme.

Six years is a long period in a nation like India with 600 million youth, nowhere in the democratic world there exists this strength.

We also have a natural way of life. Our agriculture is doing well. We have 250 to 260 million tons of food. Our IT, small scale and pharma industries are doing very well.

Of course, we have to do lots in the development of the rural area. We have 600,000 villages where 700 million people live. We have to Provide Urban Amenities to Rural Areas (PURA). Seven thousand PURAS are needed to lift 600,000 villages.

Even now it is not too late. Fortunately, I understand the present government is taking a priority for PURAS. If they push it along with small scale industry and smart waterways, then definitely 2020 — plus or minus 2 years — we can get there.

So you are confident by 2022, that we may be able to do it?

We can do it, provided we have a national vision.

Do we have that national vision?

From 1930 to 1947, we wanted Freedom. Our caste system vanished, our religions vanished, our differences vanished and we were fighting only for Independence. I call that the first mission that India had.

The second vision: Economic development. If you work like that and declare that mission in Parliament and people and government work for it, irrespective of whichever party they belong to, it is possible. Because our resources are youth power and our natural resources.

In your book, you say ‘The orientation must turn from the past to the future and focus on how India can become a developed nation. The real issue is that we are not to see ourselves as a nation and because of that there is no national vision.’

Why do you think we have not been able to see ourselves as a nation?

When we see the types of conflicts all around — religious conflict, caste system, language problems — any big nation will have such types of problems but the nation can be united for a big cause.

Independence was a big cause that united us. That’s why I am pushing this idea that the tool for India Vision 2020 is Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas. This way we can enhance village development. I have talked about all this in my book.

Independence was a common goal that united people, but some would say that India today is more divided than what it was then.

Any nation goes through a number of problems in various decades, but India has the experience of bringing together people on a big cause.

I am a believer.

The second great movement that India needs is India 2020 Vision and this will make people come together. Plus if the economic programme grows, the poverty level will come down.

Only a national vision can lift 300 million — that’s one third of the population — below the poverty line out of poverty.

As one of the co-founders of India’s space programme, you must be very proud of our Mars achievement. But at the same time when you say that we have to lift the large masses that remain poor, should not basic needs like healthcare, education, infrastructure precede loftier goals or at least go hand in hand?

The space programme is targeted at uplifting the people. In geosynchronised orbit, more than 200 transponders are communicating to the Indian earth station.

These transponders transmit communication, weather reports, 24 hour TV broadcast, the path of cyclones.

All the recent major cyclones have been forecast by various satellites. 90 per cent of the space programme is for remote sensing and communication. You can remote sense what is the kind of wealth we have on earth like water, minerals etc — so it is intended for the people. 90 per cent of the space programme is intended for the people. It is a people’s programme.

You asked about the Moon and Mars programme. We are spending less than 10 per cent of our space programme for finding and research on Moon and Mars so that we are partners in the research and no one can claim that it belongs to them. I don’t want to see Moon and Mars as the property of some other nation. It should be international property.

Ours is the lowest cost of going to the Moon or Mars and we found trace of water also on the moon. From Mars we don’t know… some revolutionary ideas will come from our Mars programme.

What kind of a leader was Vikram Sarabhai, the founder of India’s Space programme?

When you read this book Forge Your Future, you will know how to become a unique person. It contains the experience of great thinkers and doers. Dr Vikram Sarabhai was a unique personality.

He was a visionary. In 1970 he gave a report about what the nation’s space programme should be for the next 20 years.

What according to you are India’s greatest strengths?

One is our farmer community. Whatever weather condition, whatever shortfall — they will give us 200 million tones of food.

Hats off to our farmers and our agriculture scientists!

Second is youth power. No other democratic nation has 600 million youth. The ignited mind of the youth is the most powerful resource — on the earth, above the earth, under the earth — and we have that.

Third, just like every family asks the government for an economically developed nation; every family has the responsibility to give a great citizen to the nation.

We have 200 million families. Parents have the responsibility to make their children righteous — where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character.

Only three people can give a good citizen before s/he turns 17. Father, mother, the spiritual environment and the primary school teacher.

You mention women like Marie Curie and Sister Antonia as role models. Who are some contemporary Indian women role models you admire?

I have great respect for Dr V Shanta, for her contribution towards cancer diagnosis, treatment and teaching how to avoid cancer. I admire the mission of Ela Bhatt, founder of the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India and, of course my favourite, whom I respect because I like Carnatic music — M S Subbulakshmi. I love her music.

When she was alive, I used to go to her music festival.

You say in the book that India needs to cast off its inferiority complex vis-a-vis China and work towards coming together to become a master civilisation because together they constitute 37% of the world’s population.

How can this be achieved in the background of the tension, hostility and border incursions?

I remember in April 2007, I addressed the European Parliament. There were around 800 parliament members from 23 nations.

I told them when I see you all — for hundreds of years you were fighting each other and you generated two World Wars, so a billion Indian people congratulate you. Forgetting all your wars, forgetting the difference of society, you formed a European Union for prosperity and peace.

This should be an example. I had composed a poem and recited it there. They gave a standing ovation.

That is not the issue, the issue is that such nations that created World War I and II, when they came together, we — China and India — are a people of great civilisation, in spite of all the differences, there are some great philosophy that is common.

Buddha and Confucius are common to us.

I believe we have to have a great mission. I suggested when the Chinese president came here that we have a World Knowledge Platform. I teach at the University of Beijing, I told them the time has come that both nations should combine our core competence, our 60 billion dollar business, should become 250 billion dollars.

The border issue we should sort out once for all. People of the European Union fought for hundreds of years, a people who generated two World Wars and Hitler and lost millions of people are a union today for economic growth and peace and it happened in front of our eyes.

So for me the differences between nations can be solved by mutual discussions.

Both sides should decide what we can give and what we cannot. It should be an intensive one month discussion with experts and we should sort it out. I hope the present governments in India and China will do that.

What are your thoughts on the present government?

We are getting into politics, next question!

Any elected government will perform in five years. We have to give time.

You believe social media affected the results in 30 to 40 per cent Lok Sabha constituencies. How will social media and the Internet affect future elections?

Social media and the type of information flow should have credibility. It reaches fast. It connects people. It is one of the important mediums for putting forth ideas, thoughts and discussing problems.

In India, we also need contact on the ground, but in the future I see that you can sit in your home with a biometric signature and security approved and you can vote. That way you will have 100 per cent voting. It is a long way off, but I visualise it.

Selection of the candidates will also follow an electronic process — to determine if s/he is a good or bad candidate, how many cases s/he has etc. This will happen, it is only a question of time.

Ghantewala: Why did Delhi’s ‘oldest sweet shop’ shut down….?

A 225-year-old sweet shop in the Indian capital, Delhi, recently shut down after its owner said it was no longer profitable to run it. The BBC’s Geeta Pandey visits Delhi’s “oldest sweet shop” to trace its history and legacy.

When the Ghantewala sweet shop was set up in 1790, George Washington was the US president, Mozart was performing in Vienna, France was in the grip of French Revolution, Britain was ruled by King George III and Shah Alam II was the Mughal emperor who ruled Delhi.

It was at the time of such momentous world events that Lala Sukh Lal Jain, a small-time sweet maker from Nagaur in the western state of Rajasthan, arrived in Delhi to earn a living.

“He knew how to make sweets and always used the finest of ingredients,” says Sohail Hashmi, a writer and documentary filmmaker who conducts heritage walks in the city.

For the 1954 Bollywood film Chandni Chowk, a replica of the shop was created on the set in Mumbai to give the film an authentic feel

“He would arrange the sweets on a brass plate, balance it on his head, and go selling it from street to street, while ringing a small brass bell to attract attention. That is why the shop is called Ghantewala – the bell man,” Mr Hashmi adds.

As his popularity – and sales – grew, Lala Sukh Lal Jain graduated to a pushcart and by 1790, his business had grown so much that he could open up a large shop in the bustling Chandni Chowk market, close to the Red Fort, the seat of the Mughal empire.

Sushant Jain, the current owner of the shop, is the scion of the Jain family who had to make the “really tough decision” to shut the shop.

“I’ve been receiving calls from old customers every day, they are very upset. Some of them are even angry, they’ve been telling me ‘how dare you close the shop’?”

From the beginning, Ghantewala’s most popular sweet has been Sohan Halwa. “It was the favourite of Mughal emperors, it was loved by India’s presidents and prime ministers and it was also much in demand among the ordinary residents of Delhi,” says Mr Jain.

“We’ve served sweets to generations of the Nehru-Gandhi family. Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi [both prime ministers] bought sweets from my grandfather. My father supplied sweets to [former PM] Rajiv Gandhi and I supplied sweets at [his daughter] Priyanka Gandhi’s wedding,” he says.

The shop found mention in the 1912 Delhi Gazetteer which said their sweets had “a pre-eminent position in Delhi’s gastronomic art”. Going through Mr Jain’s files and family album is like a lesson in history – there are letters of appreciation from Nepal’s former king Birendra, a senior United Nations official, Indian politicians and celebrities.

He shows me a letter his grandfather, who ran the shop then, received from the prime minister’s office a few days later saying how much the sweets were appreciated.

Ashok Arora, who owns a sari shop next door to Ghantewala, remembers how during the annual Hindu festival of Diwali, the shop owners would have to call the police to manage the long queue of customers that would form outside from early in the morning.

Today, however, the customers are all gone and the once thriving shop wears a deserted look.

 

One of Mr Jain’s employees lifts the shutter for us to peek in – the floor is covered in dust, cardboard boxes and disposable plates are strewn about, and there is a no-smoking sign on the wall.

In recent months, the shop has been facing legal problems and licensing issues and Mr Jain says that changing tastes have brought the curtains down on Ghantewala.

“People nowadays are reluctant to buy Indian sweets and traditional snacks, they now prefer chocolates and pastries. Even my children prefer burgers, pizzas or cakes,” Mr Jain says.

Moreover, Sohan Halwa – the melt-in-the-mouth hard, crisp, disk-shaped sweet made from refined wheat flour, sugar, almonds, pistachios and dollops of pure desi ghee (clarified butter) – has fallen out of favour in a country that has a growing cholesterol problem and where more than 63 million people suffer from diabetes.

Mr Jain says by closing the shop, he feels like he has done “something wrong” and is “letting down my forefathers”.

But with business consistently declining, he says, he is left with no choice: “We are no longer getting the footfall we require to keep this shop going.”

Mr Hashmi, who was first introduced to the “joys of Sohan Halwa” at a friend’s house in Chandni Chowk in 1973, says Ghantewala is a mere memory now.

“We have made no effort to save the living heritage of our city and it is slowly dying. Ghantewala has also now become a lost slice of the city’s heritage,” he says.

During its 225-year existence, Ghantewala has “witnessed all the joys and sorrows of Delhi”, says Sohail Hashmi. Here, he lists some of the historical events that took place between between 1790 and 2015:

  • Collapse of the Mughal empire
  • The rise of the British Raj
  • The 1857 Mutiny against British rule
  • Durbar move in 1912 when the Indian capital was moved from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi
  • Independence in 1947, partition of India and creation of Pakistan, Hindu-Muslim riots, the exchange of population

” Britain Must Pay Reparations to India….”

At the end of May, the Oxford Union held a debate on the motion “This house believes Britain owes reparations to her former colonies”. Speakers included former Conservative MP Sir Richard Ottaway, Indian politician and writer Shashi Tharoor and British historian John Mackenzie. Shashi Tharoor’sargument in support of the motion, went viral in India after he tweeted it out from his personal account. The argument has found favour among Indians, where the subject of colonial exploitation remains a sore topic. Here he gives a summary of his views:

Indian economy

At the beginning of the 18th Century, India’s share of the world economy was 23%, as large as all of Europe put together. By the time the British departed India, it had dropped to less than 4%.

The reason was simple: India was governed for the benefit of Britain. Britain’s rise for 200 years was financed by its depredations in India.

By the end of the 19th Century, India was Britain’s biggest cash-cow, the world’s biggest purchaser of British exports and the source of highly paid employment for British civil servants – all at India’s own expense. We literally paid for our own oppression.

De-industrialisation of India

Britain’s Industrial Revolution was built on the de-industrialisation of India – the destruction of Indian textiles and their replacement by manufacturing in England, using Indian raw material and exporting the finished products back to India and the rest of the world.

The handloom weavers of Bengal had produced and exported some of the world’s most desirable fabrics, especially cheap but fine muslins, some light as “woven air”.

Britain’s response was to cut off the thumbs of Bengali weavers, break their looms and impose duties and tariffs on Indian cloth, while flooding India and the world with cheaper fabric from the new satanic steam mills of Britain.

Weavers became beggars, manufacturing collapsed; the population of Dhaka, which was once the great centre of muslin production, fell by 90%.

So instead of a great exporter of finished products, India became an importer of British ones, while its share of world exports fell from 27% to 2%.

Colonialists like Robert Clive bought their “rotten boroughs” in England with the proceeds of their loot in India (loot, by the way, was a Hindi word they took into their dictionaries as well as their habits), while publicly marvelling at their own self-restraint in not stealing even more than they did.

And the British had the gall to call him “Clive of India”, as if he belonged to the country, when all he really did was to ensure that much of the country belonged to him.

Bengal famine

As Britain ruthlessly exploited India, between 15 and 29 million Indians died tragically unnecessary deaths from starvation.

The last large-scale famine to take place in India was under British rule; none has taken place since, since free democracies don’t let their people starve to death.

Some four million Bengalis died in the Great Bengal Famine of 1943 after Winston Churchill deliberately ordered the diversion of food from starving Indian civilians to well-supplied British soldiers and European stockpiles.

“The starvation of anyway underfed Bengalis is less serious than that of sturdy Greeks,” he argued.

When officers of conscience pointed out in a telegram to the prime minister the scale of the tragedy caused by his decisions, Mr Churchill’s only response was to ask peevishly “Why hasn’t Gandhi died yet?”

Myth of ‘enlightened despotism’

British imperialism had long justified itself with the pretence that it was enlightened despotism, conducted for the benefit of the governed. Mr Churchill’s inhumane conduct in 1943 gave the lie to this myth.

But it had been battered for two centuries already: British imperialism had triumphed not just by conquest and deception on a grand scale, but by blowing rebels to bits from the mouths of cannons, massacring unarmed protesters at Jallianwala Bagh and upholding iniquity through institutionalised racism.

No Indian in the colonial era was ever allowed to feel British; he was always a subject, never a citizen.

The construction of the Indian Railways is often pointed to as a benefit of British rule, ignoring the obvious fact that many countries have built railways without having to be colonised to do so.

Nor were the railways laid to serve the Indian public. They were intended to help the British get around, and above all to carry Indian raw materials to the ports to be shipped to Britain.

The movement of people was incidental except when it served colonial interests; no effort was made to ensure that supply matched demand for mass transport.

In fact the Indian Railways were a big British colonial scam.

British shareholders made absurd amounts of money by investing in the railways, where the government guaranteed extravagant returns on capital, paid for by Indian taxes.

Thanks to British rapacity, a mile of Indian railways cost double that of a mile in Canada and Australia.

It was a splendid racket for the British, who made all the profits, controlled the technology and supplied all the equipment, which meant once again that the benefits went out of India.

It was a scheme described at the time as “private enterprise at public risk”. Private British enterprise, public Indian risk.

British aid

In recent years, even as the reparations debate has been growing louder, British politicians have in fact been wondering whether countries like India should even receive basic economic aid at the expense of the British taxpayer.

To begin with, the aid received is 0.4%, which is less than half of 1% of India’s GDP.

British aid, which is far from the amounts a reparation debate would throw up, is only a fraction of India’s fertiliser subsidy to farmers, which may be an appropriate metaphor for this argument.

Britons may see our love of cricket or the English language, or even parliamentary democracy, conjuring up memories of the Raj as in television series like Indian Summers, with Simla, and garden parties, and gentile Indians.

For many Indians, however, it is a history of loot, massacres, bloodshed, of the banishing of the last Mughal emperor on a bullock cart to Burma.

India contributed more soldiers to British forces fighting the First World War than Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa combined.

Despite suffering recession, poverty and an influenza epidemic, India’s contributions in cash and materiel amount to £8bn ($12bn) in today’s money.

Two and a half million Indians also fought for British forces in the Second World War, by the end of which £1.25bn of Britain’s total £3bn war debt was owed to India, which was merely the tip of the iceberg that was colonial exploitation.

It still hasn’t been paid.

Return the Koh-i-Noor diamond’

What’s important is not the quantum of reparations that Britain should pay, but the principle of atonement.

Two hundred years of injustice cannot be compensated for with any specific amount.

I, for one, would be happy to accept a symbolic pound a year for the next two hundred years, as a token of apology.

And maybe Britain could kindly return the Koh-i-Noor diamond to the country it was taken from!

” Untold Story of Indians Served in World war 1….”

Over one million people served in various battlefronts during World War I. And yet, even today, we know so very little about them.’

A little over 10 years ago Santanu Das, who teaches English at King’s College, London, and whose fascination with World War I began with its poetry, started, on a whim, researching the Indian involvement in that war.

The sheer breadth of the statistics that confronted him was startling. And the attendant historical poignancy, of the duty India discharged for Britain, fascinating!

Das was hooked.

His examination of the Great War veered from poetry and became increasingly historical as he delved further and further into the lives of the brave, sturdy Indian soldiers who left Indian shores for distant and strange parts of the world to fight a war they had little understanding of.

They discharged their duty diligently and mostly with distinction, thousands of them dying far from home.

The result of Das’s research is his most recent work, 1914-1918: Indian Troops In Europe(external link), a visual history based on rare archival photographs from Europe and India.

It was published in India by Mapin, January 2015, and will hit bookstores in the US and Europe September 25, to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Loos, the major last battle fought by the Indian infantry on the Western Front before they were transferred to Mesopotamia.

Das was educated in Kolkata and Cambridge and is the author of Touch And Intimacy In First World War Literature(Cambridge, 2006) which was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize and is the editor of Race, Empire And First World War Writing (Cambridge, 2011) and theCambridge Companion To The Poetry Of The First World War (2013).

He is currently completing for Cambridge University Press a monograph titled India, Empire And The First World War: Words, Images, Objects And Music which formed the basis of a two-part series he presented for BBC Radio 4 titled Soldiers Of The Empire (external link).

In an e-mail interview with Vaihayasi Pande Daniel/Rediff.com, Das describes, with a wealth of bittersweet details, the outstanding historical debt Britain owes the lowly but heroic Indian Sepoy:

How did you come to be interested in the history of Indian soldiers in World War I?

I was introduced to First World War poetry during my time at Presidency College, Kolkata.

It was while doing my first book, Touch And Intimacy In First World War Literature, that I became fully aware — and increasingly disturbed — by the enormity of the Indian involvement in the war and their erasure from ‘Great War and modern memory’. That was in 2004.

I then researched and found out that four million non-white men were drafted for the war in the European and American armies; over a million of them were Indians. And yet, even today, we know so very little about them. I became increasingly absorbed.

It was about this time — almost 10 years ago now — that I visited the French Institute at Chandernagore in West Bengal and discovered the broken and bloodstained glasses of ‘Jon’ Sen, the only non-white member of Leeds Pals Battalion, who was killed May 22, 1916. It was a revelation; there was no going back.

What particular challenges do we face in trying to recover the Indian experience of the First World War?

The majority of the Indian soldiers were semi-literate or non-literate and did not leave behind the abundance of diaries, memoirs, poems or novels that form the cornerstone of European memory of the First World War.

Of course, we have the censored letters of the Indian soldiers: they were dictated by the sepoys to the scribes or occasionally written by the sepoys themselves, then translated and extracted by the colonial censors in order to judge the morale of the troops, and these extracts have survived today.

They are important documents, but are also problematic sources because of the process of mediation. Some of these letters are collected in a very helpful anthology by David Omissi (Indian Voices Of The Great War, 1914-1918).

In addition to these, we have hundreds of photographs of the Indian troops — in trenches, fields, farms, billets, markets, towns, cities, railway stations, hospitals, prisoners-of-war camps. Though framed by the European gaze, they are some of the most eloquent testimonies and capture most vividly the daily texture of their lives. In the absence of substantial written documents, these photographs break the silence around them.

Indeed, this is what prompted me to compile these photographs from various archives in India and Europe (France, Belgium, Britain and Germany) for my visual history 1914-1918 Indians Troops In Europe. A selection of pictures from this book can be found at here(external link).

Why are the Indian soldiers forgotten?

After the devastation of the war, Europe naturally turned its attention to its own dead, wounded and bereaved; the colonial contribution, visible and acknowledged during the war years, became increasingly sidelined in the post-war years in the ‘Great War and (European) memory’.

On the other hand, in India, the country’s involvement in the First World War was immediately followed — and gradually eclipsed — by a general sense of betrayal and disillusionment with British rule, the anti-Rowlatt act demonstrations and the massacre at Amritsar (Jallianwala Bagh) in 1919 and the gradual rise of the anti-colonial nationalist movement under the leadership of Gandhi.

In post-Independence years, the nationalist narrative understandably supplanted and almost erased the country’s participation in an imperial war. So the Indian contribution to the First World War gets written out of both the European and Indian narratives.

Yet, we are talking about the experience of over one million people who served in the various battlefronts during the First World War; it is absolutely essential to acknowledge their experience and this part of India’s colonial history.

In 1914-1918: Indian Troops In Europe (Mapin, 2015), I focussed on the most visible group — the ones who fought on the Western Front — through rare photographs from various archives across India and Europe.

In India And The First World War: Objects, Images, Words And Music, to be published by Cambridge next year, I seek to weave together the first socio-cultural history on the subject.

India’s involvement in the First World War cannot be confined to a narrow ‘military history,’ but has to be integrated into a much broader framework of cultural, social and political history.

However, to recover the Indian war experience does not, and in my view should not, involve any attempt to ‘glorify’ an imperial — or for that matter any — war or ‘celebrate’ the achievements of these soldiers. We are talking about traumatic events.

Moreover, these sepoys were the sentinels of the empire, let that be clearly acknowledged at the outset. Yet it is important to understand and analyse their involvement in the war without trying in any way to whitewash the ills of colonialism or falling prey to post-imperial nostalgia in any way.

Indeed we should try to understand the imperial war effort and the nationalist struggle in an expanded frame of reference that bears witness to the country’s complex and contradictory histories.

What are some of the most interesting nuggets of history that you might have uncovered about the Indian soldier in WWI during your research?

I have been researching this subject for nearly 10 years now.

In the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, I came once across a page in the diary of an Australian private where an Indian soldier had signed his name ‘Pakkar Singh’ in Urdu, Gurmukhi and English.

The most moving artefact I found was a pair of broken, bloodstained glasses belonging to ‘Jon’ Sen the only non-white member of the famous Leeds Pals Battalion — who was killed May 22, 1916. The discovery of the glasses led to a lot of media interest both in the UK and in India and to a short BBC documentary (external link).

A search through my extended family and friends in my hometown, Kolkata, revealed the war mementos of Captain Dr Manindranath Das: his uniform, whistle, brandy bottle and tiffin box, as well as the Military Cross he was awarded for tending to his men under perilous circumstances. Das was one among several distinguished doctors from the Indian Medical Services who served in Mesopotamia.

Over the years, I have had many such finds. I found this particular archival part of the research immensely moving: these objects are the mute witnesses to the war experiences of these men, the repository of what in my first book I call ‘touch and intimacy’.

Approximately how many Indians fought in World War I?

Although I provide more detailed figures in my book 1914-1918: Indian Troops In Europe, here are some rough statistics.

Between August 1914 and December 1919, India recruited, for purposes of war, 877,068 combatants and 563,369 non-combatants, making a total of 1,440,437 recruits; of them, over a million, including 621,224 combatants and 474,789 non-combatants, served overseas during this timeframe.

These included the infantry, artillery and cavalry units as well as sappers, miners and signallers, Labour and Porter Corps, Supply and Transport Corps, Indian Medical Service and Remount and Veterinary Services.

Where did they serve? Which battlefields?

During the war years, undivided India (which would today comprise India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma) sent overseas seven expeditionary forces: the Indian Expeditionary Force A to Europe, IEFs B and C to East Africa, IEF D to Mesopotamia, IEFs E and F to Egypt and IEF G to Gallipoli.

In the course of the war, they served in almost all parts of the world — from the mud-clogged trenches of the Western Front and the vast tracts of Mesopotamia to the tetse-fly infested savannah of East Africa and the shores of Gallipoli; they also served in East and West Persia, Palestine, Egypt, Salonika, Aden, Tsingtao and Trans-Caspia.

Indeed, to follow the routes of the Indian sepoy during the First World War is to trace its global course.

What parts of India did they hail from? And what strata of society?

In 1914, India had the largest voluntary army in the world.

But the men were recruited from a very narrow strata of its huge population, comprising largely the peasant-warrior classes spread across northern and central India, the North-West Frontier Province, as well as the kingdom of Nepal, in accordance with the prevalent colonial theory of ‘martial races’.

A combination of shrewd political calculation, indigenous notions of caste and imported social Darwinism, it formed the backbone of British army recruitment in India.

It deemed that certain ethnic groups — such as Pathans, Dogras, Jats, Garwahlis, Gurkhas — were ‘naturally’ more war-like than others. These communities had often low literacy rates, were traditionally loyal and thus least likely to challenge the British Raj — very different from the politically active and articulate Bengalis who were cast as ‘effeminate’ and barred from joining the army.

Of its 600,000 combatants, more than half came from the Punjab (now spread across India and Pakistan) which saw some of the most intense recruitment campaigns.

How many casualties were there and what happened to their remains?

It is difficult to provide a precise figure for the number of Indians killed and wounded in the First World War. Between 60,000 and 70,000 of these men were killed.

If one visits the battlefields of the Western Front, one comes across gravestones with their names and inscriptions etched in the appropriate language and carefully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission — not to mention the names of the Indians killed etched on the Menin Gate itself at Ypres.

One of the most moving places in the Western Front is the beautiful Indian memorial at Neuve Chapelle dedicated to the memory of the 4,700 Indian soldiers and labourers who have no known graves.

In the war cemetery in Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania (then German East Africa), I have seen huge memorial tablets with the names of Indian combatants and non-combatants, but not a single gravestone. However I don’t know whether these men were cremated or the remains of these men were not found or it was decided as a matter of colonial (discriminatory) policy to commemorate them only on memorial tablet rather than bury them with individual gravestones (as with the white soldiers buried and honoured in the same cemetery in Dar-es-Salaam).

I understand that while the Indian soldiers, killed in Europe, were commemorated with individual gravestones, those — particularly the privates — killed in Mesopotamia and East Africa were denied such honour.

On the other hand, in Britain, where some of the wounded soldiers died, they were either buried in the Woking Cemetery or cremated at Patcham in the Sussex Downs, with appropriate religious rites.

In Iraq, the names of the Indian fallen are etched on the Basra Memorial. So the practice varied widely and it is difficult to pinpoint the exact impulses at work — sometimes it was race, sometimes religion, sometimes it was where they died, and sometimes a matter of contingency and the whim of the local authority.

In 2011, I edited a book, Race, Empire And First World War Writing. (Noted social theorist and an expert on the cultural and social history of World War I) Michele Barrett explores some of these issues in the ‘afterword’ to the book.

And what happened to the families left behind in India?

Devastation presumably, as with hundreds of thousands of families around the world, but we do not know the precise details. Many of the families these soldiers came from villages dotted around northern and north-west India and the North-West Frontier province. They were non-literate and hence have not left memoirs or diaries or letters.

There’s the extraordinary and immensely moving local tradition of songs of mourning sung by the village women which give us some insight into the grief and devastation the war caused across parts of North India, particularly in the province of Punjab.

The Punjabi poet Amarjit Chandan collected some of these songs. One of the songs goes (originally in Punjabi, here in Chandan’s translation):

I shed tears, come and speak to me
All birds, all smiles have vanished
And the boats sunk
Graves devour our flesh and blood.

A few years ago, I interviewed Punjabi novelist Mohan Kahlon in Kolkata. He mentioned how his two uncles — peasant-warriors from Punjab — perished in Mesopotamia, and how his grandmother became deranged with grief. In the village, their house came to be branded aspagal khana (the mad house).

Gandhiji’s Letters to Hitler….

By the late 1930s, Gandhi’s method of peaceful non-cooperation had already won significant concessions from the British Raj, including the founding of a national administration and local and national legislative assemblies, albeit still under British oversight.

Gandhi, himself, was internationally famous for his various acts of non-violent, civil disobedience, including his 241-mile Salt March, which, while protesting Britain’s monopoly on salt and its high tariff, also galvanized the Indian people against British rule altogether.

With his reputation for effective, nonviolent change well established, many implored Gandhi to write to Adolph Hitler, whose increasingly aggressive regime in Germany had them worried that a second world war was imminent.

For example, by February 1935, Hitler had ordered the establishment of a German air force, the Luftwaffe, and by March 1936, Hitler had sent troops into the Rhineland – both in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Also in 1936, Hitler had established pacts with Italy and Japan, and in March 1938, Germany invaded Austria.

At this time (1938), Hitler was named Man of the Year by Time magazine. They stated, “Lesser men of the year seemed small indeed beside the Führer.” That said, their reasoning for picking him was not to honor his actions up to that point, but to widely publicize his exploits. They noted, among other knocks against him, “Germany’s 700,000 Jews have been tortured physically, robbed of homes and properties, denied a chance to earn a living, chased off the streets. Now they are being held for ‘ransom,’ a gangster trick through the ages.” They ended their article on their decision to name Hitler the Man of the Year on the ominous note, “To those who watched the closing events of the year it seemed more than probable that the Man of 1938 may make 1939 a year to be remembered.”

Indeed, although Britain and France thought they had “appeased” Hitler’s ambition, and ensured “peace in our time,” with the Munich Pact (that handed only a portion of Czechoslovakia over to Germany) in September 1938, by March 1939, Hitler had breached that agreement by soon occupying the entire country. At this point, finally realizing that Hitler couldn’t be trusted, Britain pledged to defend Poland if Germany invaded the latter.

Seeing the writing on the wall, Gandhi sent a short, typewritten letter to Hitler on July 23, 1939, telling the dictator:

“Dear friend,

Friends have been urging me to write to you for the sake of humanity. But I have resisted their request, because of the feeling that any letter from me would be an impertinence. Something tells me that I must not calculate and that I must make my appeal for whatever it may be worth.

It is quite clear that you are today the one person in the world who can prevent a war which may reduce humanity to the savage state. Must

you pay the price for an object however worthy it may appear to you to be? Will you listen to the appeal of one who has deliberately shunned the method of war not without considerable success? Any way I anticipate your forgiveness, if I have erred in writing to you.

I remain,
Your sincere friend
M.K.Gandhi”

However, this letter never reached the German Chancellor, as it was, apparently, intercepted by the British government.

Shortly thereafter, Germany signed a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union on August 23, 1939 (which kept the USSR out of the war until 1941), and Britain signed the formal Anglo-Polish Common Defence Pact two days later. Germany then invaded Poland with its Blitzkrieg (“lightning war”) on September 1, 1939, and on September 3, 1939, World War II formally began when Britain and France declared war on Germany.

Despite facing two powerful enemies, Germany encountered little real resistance during those early months of the war. It tore through the European continent, and by May 1940, Belgium, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Norway were all occupied by Nazi forces. The Battle of Britain, which saw the British homeland pummeled by a months-long bombing campaign, began in July 1940. Over the coming months, nearly 30,000 bombs were dropped on London, during which more than 15,000 people were injured or killed.

Once again, on December 24, 1940, Gandhi sent a letter to Hitler, this onesignificantly longer. Again addressing him as “Dear Friend,” Gandhi explainedthat: “That I address you as a friend is no formality. I own no foes. My business in life has been for the past 33 years to enlist the friendship of the whole of humanity by befriending mankind, irrespective of race, colour or creed.” But, taking a harder line this time, Gandhi chastised the Chancellor:

“Your own writings and pronouncements . . . leave no room for doubt that many of your acts are monstrous and unbecoming of human dignity. . . . Such are your humiliation of Czechoslovakia, the rape of Poland and the swallowing of Denmark.

He also challenged Hitler, noting that although Nazi Germany had lifted the “science of destruction” to a level of “perfection”:

“It is a marvel to me that you do not see that it is nobody’s monopoly. If not the British, some other power will certainly improve upon your method and beat you with your own weapon. You are leaving no legacy to your people of which they would feel proud. They cannot take pride in a recital of cruel deed, however skilfully planned. I, therefore, appeal to you in the name of humanity to stop the war.

 

Accepted that both men shared a common disdain of Britain, Gandhi continued:

“We know what the British heel means for us and the non-European races of the world. But we would never wish to end the British rule with German aid. We have found in non-violence a force, which, if organized, can without doubt match itself against a combination of all the most violent forces of the world.

He ended with a final appeal:

“During this season when the hearts of the peoples of Europe yearn for peace . . . is it too much to ask you to make and effort for peace?

If this letter ever reached Hitler, it apparently was too much to ask.
