“A Question about the Date of Birth of Cheryl…” !!!…Very Interesting !!!

Maths question

This question from a global maths Olympiad for high school children is driving the internet crazy.

It was posted on Facebook by Singaporean TV host Kenneth Kong after the exam on Wednesday. He originally suggested it was for 11-year-olds, but after the question was leaked The Straits Times reports it’s actually designed for the Australian equivalent of Year 9 and 10 students.

The leak has led organisers of the global competition to hastily rewrite the exam paper with a new question before other countries sit the test, with Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad executive director Henry Ong saying it’s the first time a question has leaked in 10 years of running the competition.

Ong told Singapore’s Mothership that it was the 24th of 25 questions and designed “to sift out the better students.”

The brain teaser has gone viral out Facebook and we’ve put the answer below, but if you want to know how the answer is calculated, Ong gave Mothership the solution. It’s not so much maths as a deductive process of elimination.

And if you want to test your mathematical prowess against kids aged between 8 and 16, then SASMO has practice exam papers here.

Perhaps the best answer to the question came from KinMun Theodore Lee on Facebook, when he said regardless of the date, “It doesn’t change the fact that Cheryl is going to be celebrating her birthday alone.”

* The correct answer is July 16.

Message For the Day…” Hatred Towards anyone is Hatred For God…”

The Divine has comes as Avatar only to teach mankind the truth about love. Love alone is the fruit of love. True Love has no trace of self-interest and knows no fear. The world displays the diversity that has emanated from the One. The Divine demonstrates the unity that subsumes the diversity. Recognition of this ‘Unity in Diversity’ can be learnt only from the Divine. Wherever you go, whatever you do or see, cultivate the sacred feeling that you will do only those actions which pleases God. The Gita has declared: Bear no ill-will towards any living being(Adveshtaa Sarva Bhoothaanaam). Hatred towards anyone is hatred for God. The scriptures have also clearly declared: The salutation that you offer to anyone reaches the Divine. When you fill your hearts with love, you will have no hatred towards anyone. Cultivate the faith that the Divine is in everyone and surrender unto Him in a spirit of true dedication.

Why Engines Are Commonly Measured in Horse Power …?

We owe this unit of engine power measurement to Scottish engineer James Watt.

In the early 1780s, after making a vastly superior steam engine to the then classic Newcomen steam engine, Watt was looking for a way to market his invention, advertising the fact that his engine used about 75% less fuel than a similarly powered Newcomen, among many other improvements.

At first, he tried selling his engine on a royalty scheme, where the customers would owe him one-third of the money they saved by using his engine over other steam engines. Of course, many at the time used horses, not steam engines, so it was difficult to compare without them actually buying the engine to see how it would perform for their particular usage. Thus, he scrapped the royalty scheme and decided to try a different tact to convince people to buy his engine.

Ever the inventor, his solution was to come up with a new unit of measurement that those in need of his engine understood -horse power, referring to powerful draft horses.

horses2

Thus, he set about determining how much power a typical draft horse could generate. It isn’t known exactly how he came up with the numbers he did, as there are conflicting accounts of the experiments he ran. But after doing those experiments, he figured out a typical draft horse could do about 32,400 foot-pounds of work in 60 seconds and maintain that power rate for a good long workday. He then rounded up, going with 33,000 foot-pounds per minute for 1 horsepower.

So, in other words, by his estimation a good draft horse could lift 33,000 pounds of material 1 foot in 1 minute or 3,300 pounds of material 10 feet in one minute, etc .

In truth, that’s a very generous estimate as very few horses could maintain that kind of power for a full workday, but getting a perfect figure wasn’t that important to what Watt was trying to do. Further, by overestimating what a horse could do, whether intentionally or not, he made sure that his product would always over deliver what he said when trying to get people to buy it, which is a great word-of-mouth marketing trick.

In the end, Watt’s engine was revolutionary and played a huge role in the Industrial Revolution. Thanks to this fact, his unit of measure of an engine’s power, horsepower, also became popular. Funny enough, today the SI unit of power, the Watt, which was named in homage to James Watt, has widely come to replace “horsepower” in most applications.

“Sea Birds Nesting Session on a Coastline…” !!!

Nesting Seabirds in Argentina

What does it look like when 5,300 pairs of imperial cormorants settle onto an Argentine shoreline that’s smaller than a football field? Thanks to recent images captured by drones, scientists and observers are finally able to see the impact of the seabird’s annual nesting session in Patagonia, Argentina.

Imperial Cormorants Nesting

Aerial View of Imperial Cormorants Nesting Patagonia
Each of the nests seen below contains 1-5 eggs, which take about five weeks to hatch. Imperial cormorants (also referred to as “imperial shags”) are colonial breeders that often return to the same nesting grounds for many years. This particular beach is protected to allow the seabirds to breed in peace.

Cormorant Seabirds
Footage from the drones was shot by Dr. Flavio Quintana, a leading marine conservation biologist. Quintana hopes that this new method of collecting data with drones will provide scientists with more information about the Patagonian population of imperial cormorants. Already, the high-quality images and video have helped researchers determine just how many seabirds have congregated at the beach. The footage and data can now be compared to future and past years’ information

Cormorant Colonial Nesting
Nesting Seabirds
Imperial cormorants are also known for their incredible feeding techniques. In 2012, Quintana’s research team found that the seabirds could dive 150 feet underwater in just 40 seconds.

Meet this Guy… Who will be Travelling to 13 countries and over 20000Miles…all for Free !!!

Scott Keyes will be travelling to 13 countries and over 20,000 miles on his next trip, all for free.

When I spoke with Scott Keyes, he was on a 10-hour layover in Dallas kicking back in theCenturion Lounge where American Express has provided its members with free food and drinks, high-speed WiFi, free spa services, and even its own shower suite.

“It’s just a day in the office in here essentially,” the 28-year-old Keyes told Business Insider. “I’ve got a nice work space, food, drinks, some WiFi. This is like this whole other world.”

Keyes, a reporter for Think Progress, gained access to the lounge as a perk from one of his 25 credit cards. The card, an American Express Platinum, typically has an annual fee of $US450, but Keyes managed to get it waived for the first year by taking advantage of an online deal. After that, he’ll either try to get the next year’s fee waived as well, or he’ll simply downgrade the card to something that doesn’t carry a fee.

This is nothing new for Keyes who told us that he uses his massive collection of credit cards to gain points, frequent flyer miles, and plenty of other member perks all the time. He then turns around and uses those perks on vacations like his upcoming trip which will take him
20,000 miles on 21 flights — all for free.

This isn’t luck. Keyes is somewhat of an expert on travelling for little to no cost, not unlike extreme couponers who put incredible amounts of time, energy, and thought into making sure they never pay a penny more than they have to when making purchases.

After jealous friends kept asking him how he does it, Keyes decided to write his e-books “How To Fly For Free” and “How To Find Cheap Flights.” He even made an email list to send friends updates on any amazing travel deals he comes across on Twitter or his RSS feed.

The epic world trip spans 13 countries — Mexico, Nicaragua, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Grenada, Germany, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Lithuania, and Finland — over the next two months. Total airfare is 136,500 frequent flyer miles plus a few small taxes such as ‘airport use’ fees which are all under $US20 per flight.

Aside from those taxes, Keyes will be paying exactly $US0 for his trip, including his hotel stays.

He told Business Insider that it took around 10 to 15 hours to plan his itinerary, including finding flights that will use his miles, choosing between airlines, and avoiding “fuel surcharges” at all costs.

Keyes had previously been living and working for the past year in Oaxaca, Mexico, but now that he’s returning to the US, he realised it was the perfect opportunity to spend some time travelling before jumping back into a full-time job. “It’s tough when you have a job and you have to ask your boss for time off,” Keyes told Business Insider. “You only have a limited time off and then you spend a lot of that travelling. I figured while I’m in a position where I don’t have a 9-to-5, I might as well take advantage.

This is not the first time Keyes has gone on an incredibly cheap getaway for next to nothing. He has flown to Milan for $US67, gone to Galapagos for $US45, and visited Norway and Belgium for around $US70.

“It’s not necessarily easy or intuitive for beginners,” he told Business Insider about finding bargain flights. “But the good news is that because if you do a little bit of leg work — learn how to get a few miles and how to use them well — you can start to travel really, really well.”

Keyes has a few methods to procure his frequent flyer miles, including opening new credit cards that award miles or points, letting airlines know when there’s a problem with his flight, and not being afraid to get bumped if a flight is full.

He also uses Award Wallet and a detailed spreadsheet to keep organised so he never misuses his credit cards or loses track of his points and miles. In fact, since he started accruing cards, Keyes insists his credit score has actually increased just by virtue of handling his credit responsibly.

Standing 18 inches from the mouth of this hippo in Mozambique was the ‘most scared I’ve been in my life,’ according to Keyes.

And when it comes to finding cheap trips, Keyes has an RSS reader and Twitter list chock full of blogs and websites like Airfarewatchdog and The Flight Deal that he skims to see if there are any “mistake fees” or cheap flights available.

The key, he said, is flexibility.

“If your ultimate goal is to be able to find as cheap a flight as possible and go somewhere cool for not much money then starting with an open, blank slate and going wherever there’s a cheap flight right now is going to be your best bet,” he told us.

Since starting his frequent flyer mile journey, Keyes has been to 30 countries — this next trip will make that count 42 — and flown 354,000 miles or roughly 14.3 times around the earth.

“The moon is only 250,000 miles away,” Keyes laughed. “I’ve only got 150,000 more to go until I can get back from the moon.”

As for his upcoming trip, Keyes said he’s most excited to visit a “beer spa” in Prague.

“I don’t quite understand it because I don’t speak Czech, but my understanding from pictures is that you just go and soak in beer,” he told us. “And who can complain about that?”

” Glorious and Colorful Display of Lights through Glass Windows…” !!!

The Colorful Pink Mosque

When it comes to historical buildings, we usually imagine castles, towers, bricks and mortar. Rarely do we think about the colors it might have.
Here’s an exception. The Nasir Al-Molk Mosque was built in 1876 in Shiraz, Iran. The specialized stained glass windows were built to capture the morning light and create a glorious and colorful display of light on the building’s floor, earning it the name “Pink Mosque”.
At certain times of the day, it seems like this building contains all the colors in the world. It also uses traditional Islamic architecture styles, such as iwan arches, a central fountain etc. However, the stained glass windows are a rarity in mosques, with another example being the famous blue mosque in Istanbul.

Message For the Day…” How to Lead a Divine Life …” ?

There is no special membership that entitles you to a Divine Life. Every struggle to realise the unity behind all the multiplicity is a step on the path of Divine Life. You have to churn the milk if you wish to separate and identify the butter that is immanent in it. So too, you must carry on certain processes of thought and action in order to get to the hard core of faith that this world is false; it is a funny mixture of real and unreal (Sathyam and Asathyam). To lead a Divine Life, you cannot permit the presence of the slightest dross in character or delusion in intellect. People dedicated to it must exemplify this by precept and practice. Wipe out the root causes of anxiety, fear and ignorance. Then your true personality will shine forth. Anxiety is removed by faith in the Lord; the faith that tells you that whatever happens is for the best and that the Lord’s Will be done.
