NASA’s Three-Billion-Mile Journey to Pluto Reaches Historic Encounter…

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is at Pluto.

After a decade-long journey through our solar system, New Horizons made its closest approach to Pluto Tuesday, about 7,750 miles above the surface — roughly the same distance from New York to Mumbai, India – making it the first-ever space mission to explore a world so far from Earth.

“I’m delighted at this latest accomplishment by NASA, another first that demonstrates once again how the United States leads the world in space,” said John Holdren, assistant to the President for Science and Technology and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. “New Horizons is the latest in a long line of scientific accomplishments at NASA, including multiple missions orbiting and exploring the surface of Mars in advance of human visits still to come; the remarkable Kepler mission to identify Earth-like planets around stars other than our own; and the DSCOVR satellite that soon will be beaming back images of the whole Earth in near real-time from a vantage point a million miles away. As New Horizons completes its flyby of Pluto and continues deeper into the Kuiper Belt, NASA’s multifaceted journey of discovery continues.”

The exploration of Pluto and its moons by New Horizons represents the capstone event to 50 years of planetary exploration by NASA and the United States,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. “Once again we have achieved a historic first. The United States is the first nation to reach Pluto, and with this mission has completed the initial survey of our solar system, a remarkable accomplishment that no other nation can match.”

Per the plan, the spacecraft currently is in data-gathering mode and not in contact with flight controllers at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland. Scientists are waiting to find out whether New Horizons “phones home,” transmitting to Earth a series of status updates that indicate the spacecraft survived the flyby and is in good health. The “call” is expected shortly after 9 p.m. EDT tonight.

The Pluto story began only a generation ago when young Clyde Tombaugh was tasked to look for Planet X, theorized to exist beyond the orbit of Neptune. He discovered a faint point of light that we now see as a complex and fascinating world.

“Pluto was discovered just 85 years ago by a farmer’s son from Kansas, inspired by a visionary from Boston, using a telescope in Flagstaff, Arizona,” said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “Today, science takes a great leap observing the Pluto system up close and flying into a new frontier that will help us better understand the origins of the solar system.”

New Horizons’ flyby of the dwarf planet and its five known moons is providing an up-close introduction to the solar system’s Kuiper Belt, an outer region populated by icy objects ranging in size from boulders to dwarf planets. Kuiper Belt objects, such as Pluto, preserve evidence about the early formation of the solar system.

New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in Boulder, Colorado, says the mission now is writing the textbook on Pluto.

The New Horizons team is proud to have accomplished the first exploration of the Pluto system,” Stern said. “This mission has inspired people across the world with the excitement of exploration and what humankind can achieve.”

New Horizons’ almost 10-year, three-billion-mile journey to closest approach at Pluto took about one minute less than predicted when the craft was launched in January 2006. The spacecraft threaded the needle through a 36-by-57 mile (60 by 90 kilometers) window in space — the equivalent of a commercial airliner arriving no more off target than the width of a tennis ball.

Because New Horizons is the fastest spacecraft ever launched – hurtling through the Pluto system at more than 30,000 mph, a collision with a particle as small as a grain of rice could incapacitate the spacecraft. Once it reestablishes contact Tuesday night, it will take 16 months for New Horizons to send its cache of data – 10 years’ worth — back to Earth.

New Horizons is the latest in a long line of scientific accomplishments at NASA, including multiple rovers exploring the surface of Mars, the Cassini spacecraft that has revolutionized our understanding of Saturn and the Hubble Space Telescope, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. All of this scientific research and discovery is helping to inform the agency’s plan to send American astronauts to Mars in the 2030’s.

“After nearly 15 years of planning, building, and flying the New Horizons spacecraft across the solar system, we’ve reached our goal,” said project manager Glen Fountain at APL. “The bounty of what we’ve collected is about to unfold.”

APL designed, built and operates the New Horizons spacecraft and manages the mission for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. SwRI leads the mission, science team, payload operations and encounter science planning. New Horizons is part of NASA’s New Frontiers Program, managed by the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

” காமராஜர் காலம் ஏன் பொற்காலம் ….” ?

1956-ல் தமிழகத்துக்கு வருகைதந்த வினோபா பாவேவைத் திருவள்ளூர் அருகே வரவேற்கிறார் முதல்வர் காமராஜர்.

காமராஜர் ஆட்சிக் காலகட்டத்தைத் தமிழகத்தின் பொற்கால ஆட்சி என்று சொல்லும்போது, பலரும் ஏதோ அதை வெற்றுப் புகழாரம்போலவே இன்றைக்கு நினைக்கின்றனர். இந்தத் தலைமுறையைச் சேர்ந்த காங்கிரஸார் பலருக்குமேகூட அந்த வார்த்தைகளின் பின்னால் உள்ள பெறுமதி தெரிந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை. “மூவேந்தர்கள் ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில் நிகழாத அற்புதங்கள் எல்லாம் தமிழகத்தில் நடந்தது காமராஜர் ஆட்சியில்!” இப்படிக் கூறியவர் யார் தெரியுமா? தந்தை பெரியார். உண்மையில், காமராஜர் ஆண்ட அந்த ஒன்பது ஆண்டுகளில் தமிழகத்தில் என்ன நடந்தது? ஏன் வரலாறு தெரிந்தவர்கள் இன்றைக்கும் அதைப் பொற்கால ஆட்சி என்று கூறுகின்றனர்? முக்கியமான சில பதிவுகளை மட்டும் தருகிறேன்.

இன்றைக்கு தமிழக அரசின் 2014-15-ம் ஆண்டுக்கான மொத்த பட்ஜெட் தொகை ரூ. 1.27 லட்சம் கோடி. ஆனால், காமராஜர் முதல்வராகப் பொறுப்பேற்ற 1954-55-ல் மொத்த பட்ஜெட் தொகை எவ்வளவு தெரியுமா? ரூ.47.18 கோடி. அவர் பதவி விலகியபோது 1962-63-ல் ரூ.121.81 கோடி. அன்றைக்கெல்லாம் ஒட்டுமொத்த இந்தியாவுமே ஏழை தேசம்தான். இப்படிப்பட்ட பின்னணியில்தான் மகத்தான காரியங்களை காமராஜர் தன் ஆட்சியில் மேற்கொண்டார். அவருடைய சாதனைகளைப் படிக்கும் முன், அன்றைய தமிழகத்தின் இந்த மொத்த நிதியாதாரப் பின்னணியை நாம் கருத்தில் கொள்வது முக்கியம்.

முதல் திருத்தத்தின் மூலவர்

தமிழகத்தில் நீண்டகாலமாக அமலில் இருந்த, பின்தங்கிய சமுதாயத்தினருக்கான இடஒதுக்கீட்டை உறுதிசெய்யும் ‘கம்யூனல் ஜி.ஓ.’ செல்லாது என சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்றமும் உச்ச நீதிமன்றமும் வழங்கிய தீர்ப்பு கடும் கொந்தளிப்பை உருவாக்கியது. இந்நிலைமையை நன்கு உணர்ந்த காமராஜர், பிரதமர் நேருவிடம் வலியுறுத்தி அரசமைப்புச் சட்டத்தில் முதல் திருத்தம் கொண்டுவர வித்திட்டார். அரசமைப்புச் சட்டம் அமலுக்கு வந்த சில மாதங்களிலேயே 1951-ல் அதில் திருத்தம் கொண்டுவரக் காரணமாக இருந்து, பின்தங்கிய சமுதாய மாணவர்கள் கல்வி, வேலைவாய்ப்புகளில் பெற்றுவந்த இடஒதுக்கீட்டு உரிமையைப் பெற்றுத் தந்தவர் காமராஜர். இதனால் அவரை ‘முதல் திருத்தத்தின் மூலவர்’ என்று தமிழகம் போற்றிப் பாராட்டி அழைத்துப் பெருமிதம் கொண்டது.

சமூக நீதிக்கான ஆட்சி

தமிழகத்தின் முதலமைச்சராக ஏப்ரல் 13, 1954-ல் பொறுப்பேற்ற காமராஜர், அக்டோபர் 2, 1963 வரை ஒன்பதரை ஆண்டு காலம் ஆட்சி செய்தார். முதலில் எட்டு, பிறகு ஒன்பது அமைச்சர்களோடும் எளிமையான, நேர்மை யான ஆட்சி நடத்தினார். தமது முதல் அமைச்சரவையை உருவாக்கும்போது, ஹரிஜனத் தலைவரான பி.பரமேசு வரனுக்கு இந்து அறநிலையத் துறையை அளித்தார். உழைப்பாளர் கட்சித் தலைவரான எஸ்.எஸ். ராமசாமி படையாச்சியைக் காங்கிரஸில் இணைத்து, அமைச்சர் பொறுப்பு வழங்கி, பின்தங்கிய மக்களை முன்னேற்றப் பாதையில் பயணம் செய்ய வழிவகுத்தார்.

கல்விப் புரட்சி

காமராஜர் முதலமைச்சராகப் பொறுப்பேற்றதும் முதல் நடவடிக்கையே குலக்கல்விமுறை ஒழிப்புதான். “சிலர் பரம்பரைத் தொழிலையே செய்து வர வேண்டும் என்கிறார்கள். நாம் கீழேயே இருக்க வேண்டுமாம். நம்மைப் படிக்காதவர்களாக வைத்திருந்து, நாம் ரோடு போடவும், கல் உடைக்கவும், ஏர் ஓட்டவும், சேறு சகதியில் நாற்று நடவும் பயன்பட வேண்டுமாம்.

காட்பாடி பள்ளிக்கூட ஏழைக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு உணவு பரிமாறுகிறார் காமராஜர்.

அவர்கள் மட்டும் நகத்தில் மண் படாமல் வேலை செய்து முன்னேற வேண்டுமாம். எப்படியிருக்கிறது நியாயம்? நாமும் படித்து, நாலு தொழில் செய்து முன்னேற வேண்டாமா?” என்று நறுக்குத் தெறித்தார்போல் கூறினார்.

எந்தச் சொத்தும் இல்லாதவர்களுக்குக் கல்வி என்ற சொத்தை வழங்கி, வாழ்க்கையில் முன்னேற்றிவிட வேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கத்தில் இலவசக் கல்வியையும், மதிய உணவுத் திட்டத்தையும் கொண்டுவந்தார். இதனால் 1957-ல் 15,800 ஆக இருந்த தொடக்கப் பள்ளிகள், 1962-ல் 29,000 ஆக உயர்ந்தன. மாணவர் எண்ணிக்கை 19 லட்சத்திலிருந்து 40 லட்சமாக அதிகரித்தது. 637 ஆக இருந்த உயர்நிலைப் பள்ளிகளின் எண்ணிக்கை 1,995 ஆனது.

தொழில் வளர்ச்சி

ஜவாஹர்லால் நேரு ஆட்சியில் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்ட முதலாவது, இரண்டாவது ஐந்தாண்டு திட்டங்களின் முழுப் பலனையும் தமிழகம் பெற்று முன்னேறும் வகையில் கடும் முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. அதன் பயனாக தமிழகத்தில் தொழில் புரட்சி நடந்தது. சென்னை – பெரம்பூரில் ரயில் பெட்டித் தயாரிப்புத் தொழிற்சாலை, சென்னை, கிண்டியில் இந்துஸ்தான் டெலிபிரிண்டர் தொழிற்சாலை, ஊட்டியில் இந்துஸ்தான் போட்டோ ஃபிலிம் தொழிற்சாலை, திருச்சி, திருவெறும்பூரில் உயர் அழுத்த கொதிகலன் தொழிற்சாலை (BHEL) அமைய 750 ஏக்கர் பட்டா நிலமும், 2,400 ஏக்கர் புறம்போக்கு நிலமும் வழங்கப்பட்டன.

1958-ல் கிண்டி தொழிற்பேட்டையைப் பார்வையிட வந்த பிரதமர் நேருவுடன்…

இன்று சர்வதேச அளவில் புகழ்பெற்று, பொதுத் துறை நிறுவனங்களிலேயே அதிக லாபத்தைத் தருகிற ‘மகாநவரத்தினா’என்ற தகுதியை பெற்றுள்ளது பெல் நிறுவனம். பாதுகாப்பு அமைச்சகத்துக்கு உட்பட்ட ஆவடி டாங்க் ஃபேக்டரி தொழில் வளர்ச்சியில் அரசுத் துறையோடு, தனியார் துறையும் இணைந்து பல தொழில்கள் தொடங்கப்பட்டன. ‘மதராஸ் இண்டஸ்டிரியல் இன்வெஸ்ட்மெண்ட் கார்ப்பரேஷன், அசோக் லேலண்ட் தொழிற்சாலை, டி.ஐ. சைக்கிள் தொழிற்சாலை, சிம்சன், இந்தியா பிஸ்டன்ஸ், டி.வி.எஸ், லூகாஸ் இவையெல்லாம் அந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில் தொடங்கப்பட்டவைதான். 1951-ல் தமிழகத்தில் 71-ஆக இருந்த நெசவாலைகளின் எண்ணிக்கை, 1962 முடிவில் 134-ஆகப் பெருகியது. அதேபோன்று கூட்டுறவுத் துறையில் நூற்பு ஆலைகள் தொடங்கப்பட்டன. சர்க்கரை ஆலைகளின் எண்ணிக்கை மூன்றிலிருந்து எட்டாக உயர்ந்தது. இவற்றின் உற்பத்தி 1 லட்சத்து 27 ஆயிரத்து 500 டன்.

மூன்றாவது ஐந்தாண்டுத் திட்டத்தின்போது, கூடுதலாகப் பல சர்க்கரை ஆலைகள் தொடங்க ஆணை பிறப்பிக்கப் பட்டது. ஆண்டொன்றுக்கு 20 ஆயிரம் டன் காகிதம் உற்பத்தி செய்யக்கூடிய ஆலையை ஈரோடு அருகே பள்ளிபாளையத்தில் சேஷசாயி காகிதம் மற்றும் போர்டுகள் லிமிடெட் நிறுவனம் தொடங்கியது. அதே போன்று, மாநிலத்தில் கூடுதலாக காகிதக்கூழ் மற்றும் வைக்கோல் அட்டைகள் தயாரிக்க எட்டு ஆலைகள் தொடங்குவதற்கு உரிமை வழங்கப்பட்டது. கோவை மாவட்டம் மதுக்கரை, திருச்சி மாவட்டம் டால்மியாபுரம், ராமநாதபுர மாவட்டம் துலுக்கப்பட்டி, திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டம் தாழையூத்து என நான்கு சிமெண்ட் தயாரிக்கும் ஆலைகள் தொடங்கப்பட்டன.

இரண்டாவது ஐந்தாண்டுத் திட்டத்தின்போது ‘மெட்ராஸ் சிமெண்ட்ஸ் லிமிடெட்’ என்ற ஒரு புதிய சிமெண்ட் ஆலை ராஜபாளையத்தில் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. 1962-ல் சேலம், சங்கரிதுர்க்கம் என்ற இடத்தில் சிமெண்ட் தொழிற்சாலை தொடங்குவதற்கு உரிமம் வழங்கப்பட்டது. கரூரில் மற்றொரு ஆலை தொடங்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டது.

தொழிற்பேட்டைகள்

காமராஜர் ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில் தொழில் வளர்ச்சிக்காகவும், வேலைவாய்ப்பு வழங்கவும் தொழிற்பேட்டைகள் சென்னை, கிண்டி, விருதுநகரில் தொடங்கப்பட்டன. இவற்றின் பயன்கள் அதிகரித்ததைத் தொடர்ந்து கும்பகோணம், விருத்தாசலம், கிருஷ்ணகிரி, தேனி, திண்டுக்கல், கோவில்பட்டி, ராஜ பாளையம், நாகார்கோவில், சென்னையை அடுத்த அம்பத்தூர் போன்ற இடங்களில் இத்தகைய தொழிற் பேட்டைகளை உருவாக்குதவற்காக ரூ.4.08 கோடி ஒதுக்கப் பட்டது. இவற்றைத் தவிர மதுரை, திருநெல்வேலி, திருச்சி மற்றும் மார்த்தாண்டம் (கன்னியா குமரி) ஆகிய இடங்களில் தொழிற்பேட்டைகள் தொடங்கப் பட்டன. சென்னை அம்பத்தூரில் தொழிற்பேட்டை தொடங்கி 1,200 ஏக்கர் நிலம் வழங்கி இடஒதுக்கீட்டுடன் 400 தொழிற்கூடங்கள் அமைக்கப்பட்டன.

பாசனத் திட்டங்கள்

மொழிவாரி மாநிலங்கள் அமைக்கப்பட்ட பிறகு தமிழகம் தனது நீர்வளத்தைப் பெருக்க உரிய பாசனத் திட்டங்களை நிறைவேற்ற வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக காமராஜர் தீவிர முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொண்டார். அவற்றின் பயனாக கீழ்பவானி திட்டம், மணிமுத்தாறு திட்டம், மேட்டுர் கால்வாய் திட்டம், ஆரணியாறு திட்டம், அமராவதி திட்டம், வைகை திட்டம், சாத்தனூர் திட்டம், கிருஷ்ணகிரி திட்டம், 30 லட்ச ரூபாய் மதிப்பிலான காவிரி கழிமுக வடிகால் திட்டம் ஆகியவை உருவாகின.

கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டம் விளாத்துறையில் இறவைப் பாசனத் திட்டத்தைத் தொடங்கிவைக்கிறார்.

இவை தவிர, இரண்டாவது ஐந்தாண்டுத் திட்டகாலத்தில் புள்ளம்பாடி வாய்க்கால் திட்டம், புதிய கட்டளைத் திட்டம், வீடூர் நீர்த்தேக்கத் திட்டம், கொடையாறு வாய்க்கால் திட்டம், நெய்யாறு திட்டம், பரம்பிக்குளம் – ஆழியாறு திட்டம் ஆகிய ஏழு புதிய திட்டங்களும் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன.

இரண்டாவது ஐந்தாண்டுத் திட்ட காலத்தின்போது, மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட மிக முக்கிய திட்டம். இது கிட்டத்தட்ட ரூ. 30 கோடி செலவில் நீர்ப்பாசனத்தோடு மின்சாரம் வழங்கும் பல்நோக்குத் திட்டமாகும். கோவை மாவட்டத்தில் 2.4 லட்சம் ஏக்கர் நில பரப்புக்கும் நீர்ப்பாசன வசதி வழங்குவதோடு, 1.80 லட்சம் கிலோவாட் திறன்கொண்ட மின்உற்பத்தி செய்யும் திட்டங்களை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டதே இத்திட்டம். அம்மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள பொள்ளாச்சி, உடுமலைப்பேட்டை, தாராபுரம், பல்லடம் ஆகிய பகுதிகளுக்கு இத்திட்டம் நீர்ப்பாசன வசதி செய்கிறது. அண்டை மாநிலங்களோடு நல்லுறவு இருந்தால் இத்தகைய நதிநீர்ப் பகிர்வுத் திட்டங்கள் வெற்றிகரமாகச் செயல்படுத்த முடியும் என்பதற்கு இத்திட்டம் சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டு.

மின்உற்பத்தி

காமராஜர் ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில் மின்உற்பத்தியில் வியக்கத் தக்க சாதனைகள் நிகழ்த்தப்பட்டன. மின்உற்பத்தியிலும், அதைப் பயன்படுத்துவதிலும் சென்னை மாகாணம் இந்தியாவில் மூன்றாவது இடத்தை வகித்தது. காமராஜர் ஆட்சியில்தான் பெரியார் நீர்மின்உற்பத்தித் திட்டம், குந்தா நீர்மின்உற்பத்தித் திட்டம் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. நெய்வேலி பழுப்பு நிலக்கரித் திட்டம் ரூ. 86 கோடி முதலீட்டில் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. இதன்மூலம் மின் உற்பத்தியில் மகத்தான சாதனைகள் நிகழ்ந்தன. இன்று ரூ.1,500 கோடிக்கும்மேல் லாபம் ஈட்டித்தரும் மிகப்பெரிய பொதுத்துறை நிறுவனமாக வளர்ந்துள்ளது.

மின் உற்பத்திக் கருவியைப் பார்வையிடும் காமராஜர்…

சென்னை மாகாணத்தின் மின்பற்றாக்குறையைச் சமாளிப் பதற்காக 5 லட்சம் கிலோவாட் மின்உற்பத்தித் திறன்கொண்ட அணுமின் நிலையத்தைக் கல்பாக்கத்தில் அமைக்க முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொண்ட காமராஜர், இந்திய அரசின் அணுமின் உற்பத்தித் துறையை அணுகி, இத்திட்டத்தைப் பெறுவதில் வெற்றிகண்டார். அதன் பயன்களைத் தமிழகம் உள்ளிட்ட தென் மாநிலங்கள் இன்று அனுபவித்துவருகின்றன.

நிலச் சீர்திருத்தம்

காமராஜர் ஆட்சிப் பொறுப்பேற்ற உடனேயே நிலச் சீர்திருத்த நடவடிக்கைகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. குத்தகைதாரர்களின் பாதுகாப்புக்காக, ‘குத்தகைதாரர் பாதுகாப்புச் சட்டம் – 1955’ காமராஜர் ஆட்சியில் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது. நிலச் சீர்திருத்தத்தை மேன்மைப்படுத்தும் நடவடிக்கையாக 30 ஸ்டாண்டர்டு ஏக்கர் நிலத்துக்கும்மேல் வைத்திருந்தால் அவற்றை அரசுடமையாக்கும் நில உச்சவரம்புச் சட்டம் 1962-ல் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது.

காங்கிரஸ் ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில் கிராமப்புற மக்களின் வாழ்க்கையை மேம்படுத்துவதற்காக, பஞ்சாயத்து ஆட்சி செயல்படுத்தப்பட்டது. ராஜஸ்தான் மாநிலத்தில் பஞ்சாயத்து ராஜ் அமைப்பை நேரு தொடங்கியதையொட்டி தமிழ்நாடு பஞ்சாயத்துச் சட்டம் 1958-ல் காமராஜர் ஆட்சியில் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது. தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் காமராஜர் ஆட்சியில் 373 பஞ்சாயத்து யூனியன்களும், 12 ஆயிரம் பஞ்சாயத்துக்களும் தொடங்கப்பட்டுச் செயல்படத் தொடங்கின.

தமிழ் வளர்ச்சி

சென்னை மாகாணத்தின் பட்ஜெட்டை 1957-58-ல் தமிழிலேயே சமர்ப்பித்தார் காமராஜர். 1956-ல் தமிழ் ஆட்சி மொழிச்சட்டம் கொண்டுவந்ததும் காமராஜர் ஆட்சியே. 1959 ஜனவரியில், தமிழ் அறிஞர்களை உறுப்பினர்களாகக் கொண்ட ‘தமிழ் வளர்ச்சி ஆராய்ச்சி மன்றம்’ என்ற அமைப்பு தொடங்கப்பட்டது. இந்த அமைப்பின் தலைவராகக் கல்வி அமைச்சர் நியமிக்கப்பட்டார். கல்லூரிப் பாடங்களைக் கற்பிக்கும் மொழியாக தமிழைக் கொண்டுவரவும் மலிவான விலையில் உயர் கல்விக்கான பாடநூல்களைத் தமிழில் வெளியிடவும் இந்த அமைப்பு செயல்பட்டது. இத்துடன் ‘தமிழ்ப்பாடநூல் வெளியீட்டுக் கழகம்’ தோற்றுவிக்கப்பட்டது. தமிழைப் பயிற்றுமொழியாகக் கொண்டு படிப்பவர்களுக்கு மாத ஊக்கத்தொகையும், அரசு வேலைவாய்ப்புகளில் முன்னுரிமையும் வழங்கப்பட்டன. பாடங்கள் தொடர்பான ஆங்கில நூல்கள் தமிழில் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டு வெளியிடப்பட்டன.

காமராஜர் ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில்தான் கலைச்சொல் அகராதி 1960-ல் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. 1956-ல் மொழிவாரி மாநிலம் அமைக்கப்பட்டவுடன் ‘மெட்ராஸ் ஸ்டேட்’ என்பதை ‘தமிழ்நாடு’ என்று மாற்றி அமைக்க வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கை எழுந்தது. இதுகுறித்து சட்டமன்றத்தில் 24.2.1961-ல் நடந்த விவாதத்தில் உரையாற்றிய சி.சுப்பிரமணியம், “மெட்ராஸ் ஸ்டேட் என்று குறிப்பிடப்படும் இடத்தில் சென்னை ராஜ்யம் என்று எழுதுவதற்குப் பதில் தமிழ்நாடு என்று எழுதலாம் என பெருமகிழ்ச்சியுடன் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறேன்’என்று தெரிவித்தார். சட்டமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள் அனைவரும் பெரும் ஆரவாரம் செய்து வரவேற்றனர்.

எளிமை நேர்மை – தூய்மை

எல்லாவற்றையும்விட முக்கியமானது இது. காமராஜரின் பொதுவாழ்க்கை எளிமை, நேர்மை, தூய்மை எனும் தாரக மந்திரத்தை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டது. முதல்வராக இருந்த காலத்தில் சென்னையில் உள்ள தனது வீட்டில் தனது தாயைக்கூட இரண்டு அல்லது மூன்று நாட்களுக்கு மேலாகத் தங்க காமராஜர் அனுமதித்ததில்லை. தனது சம்பளத்திலிருந்து மாதம் ரூ.120 கொடுத்து விருதுநகரில்தான் தனது தாயைத் தங்கவைத்திருந்தார். தன்னைச் சுற்றி தனது குடும்பத்தினர், உறவினர் இருக்கக் கூடாது என்பதில் மிகவும் கண்டிப்பாக இருந்தார் என்ற ஒரு செய்தி போதும், கறை படியாத கைகளுக்கு.

பெரியாரின் வார்த்தைகள்

காமராஜர் ஆட்சியைப் பிரதமர் நேரு உள்ளிட்ட தேசியத் தலைவர்கள் அனைவருமே மனதாரப் பாராட்டியுள்ளனர். முக்கியமான பாராட்டு, காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியைக் கடுமையாக விமர்சித்த தந்தை பெரியாருடையது. சுமார் ஒன்பதரை ஆண்டு காலம் காமராஜர் ஆட்சியைத் தம் தோள்மீது சுமந்து, தமிழகம் முழுவதும் சுற்றுப்பயணம்செய்து பிரச்சாரம் செய்து ஆதரவு திரட்டினார் பெரியார்.

1961-ல் தேவகோட்டையில் பேசும்போது, மரண வாக்குமூலம்போலத் தமது உள்ளக்கிடக்கையை தந்தை பெரியார் வெளியிட்டார். அதில், ‘‘தோழர்களே! எனக்கோ வயது 82 ஆகிறது. நான் எந்த நேரத்திலும் இறந்துவிடலாம். ஆயினும், நீங்கள் இருப்பீர்கள். உங்களைவிட முதிர்ந்த நான், மரண வாக்குமூலம்போன்று ஒன்றைக் கூறுகிறேன். மரண வாக்குமூலம் கூறவேண்டிய நிலையில் உள்ளவன் பொய் சொல்ல வேண்டிய அவசியமில்லை. இன்றைய காமராசர் ஆட்சியில் நமது நாடு அடைந்து வரும் முன்னேற்றம் இரண்டாயிரம், மூவாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளில் என்றுமே நடந்ததில்லை. நமது முவேந்தர்கள் ஆட்சிக் காலத்திலாகட்டும், அடுத்து நாயக்கர் மன்னர்கள், மராட்டிய மன்னர்கள், முஸ்லிம்கள், வெள்ளைக்காரர்கள் இவர்கள் ஆட்சியில் ஆகட்டும், எல்லாம் நமது கல்விக்கு வகைசெய்யவில்லை.

தோழர்களே நீங்கள் என் சொல்லை நம்புங்கள். இந்த நாடு உருப்பட வேண்டுமானால் இன்னும் 10 ஆண்டுகளுக்காவது காமராசரை விட்டுவிடாமல் பிடித்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள். அவரது ஆட்சிமூலம் சுகமடையுங்கள். காமராசரைப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ள நாம் தவறிவிட்டால், தமிழர்களுக்கு வாழ்வளிக்க வேறு ஆளே சிக்காது.”

A delighted mother has captured the moment that her baby daughter could see clearly for the first time after being given a pair of glasses.

The footage shows Piper Verdusco as her parents struggle to put on her new spectacles and then the obvious difference they make to the youngster’s vision.

Mother-of-two Jessica Sinclair, 26, from Cincinnati, Ohio, posted the video of her daughter, who has weak eyesight, on Facebook along with the caption: ‘Picked up her glasses. Went out to eat and put them on her. Her reaction melts my heart.’

The 30-second video, which has been viewed a staggering 12,179,340 times, sees baby Piper sat in American diner Flipdaddy’s, with parents Jessica and Andrew Verdusco.

Piper is seen absent-mindedly playing with a coaster in a high-chair while her mother attempts to fit her with the pink-rimmed glasses.

The pair of spectacles feature a stretchy cloth band to keep them securely on, and as they are placed onto Piper’s head, she is seen struggling, adamantly trying to take them off.

Wriggling and even flailing her arms, the baby girl lets up at one point, just as mother Jessica is able to slip the glasses on.

Able to see clearly for the first time in her life, Piper pauses momentarily, gazing awe-struck at her mother, before bursting into a grin and staring with her mouth agape.

Her overjoyed expression prompts her mother to question: ‘Hi, can you see? Can you see?’

All this while, Piper is staring at her mother with an amazed expression on her face.

At this point, father Andrew attracts Piper’s attention, saying: ‘Piper, hi!’

The young baby girl, looks over at her father, and smiles instantly.

She continues to look back and forth ecstatically at her parents, who laugh at her reaction.

The clip has also been shared on Facebook 189,836 times in the past week.

Technologies Come and Go…But Few Remain Forever !!!

Technologies come and go, but some become so integral a part of our lives that they linger on, often with us not even being aware of their extended existence. From the look of it, they might appear to be misfits in today’s touch and wireless age, but they are still around. For a purpose. We list the what and the why.

1.Pagers

Some might think pagers were almost immediately killed with the arrival of mobile phones; what you might not know is that pagers are still in use. Pagers use radio frequency to transmit messages and although no longer in wide usage; they are preferred in applications like restaurants, hospitals, retail stores, etc. Emergency responders such as hospitals or fire fighters use pagers because they offer connectivity even when there are network outages or disruptions in communication. The digital token you get when you place an order at some restaurants is also a type of pager that tells you when the food’s ready.

2. Walkie-Talkie

From the early cup and string version to the more conventional handheld transreceiver version, walkie talkies were first developed during the Second World War and unsurprisingly, are in use even today. From military personnel to students when handling university events, walkie talkies are a reliable mode of communication in places where phones can be cumbersome.

3. Typewriter

This one piece of technology has helped many a great literatures see the light of the day. Developed first in 1860s, typewriters may seem too archaic in the tablet world today, but other than giving a great retro appeal, they are still in use. Law offices, prisons, music studios or even as a replacement to your keyboard; typewriters are still there, albeit fading.

4. Floppy Disks

Yes, these age-old coaster-like storage devices are ‘still’ in use too. Ironically, the US government still uses floppy disks with federal data stored on them. Despite the floppy disks being an extinct technology, some of the US government agencies still scan documents on to a computer and save them on floppy disks. As a result, the computers too ought to be equally outdated. Although the Obama administration is gradually embracing the newer technology, the old data is so huge in size that it isn’t easy to migrate all of that onto the new ‘hack-prone’ systems.

5. Dot matrix printers

Remember the sound of these printers? They have been around for long and are still used to print something as basic as your shopping bills to something as confidential as your first ATM PIN number. As the dot matrix printers can generate multi-part forms between carbon paper, it still has uses in banks, warehousing, shipping, retail shops or departments where multiple copies of the form are required.

6. Vinyl records

Other than being an absolutely admired item in the list of true music aficionados, vinyl records are still used by disc jockeys or DJs to learn the basics of ‘scrubbing’. While many of the popular DJ artists prefer the digital records as they are easier to play and experiment with; those who still want to learn the skill to perfection, prefer the old-school vinyl records. These offer a far richer and cleaner audio experience than the present-day digital formats. Recently, Nielsen Music released its mid-2015 report which showed a clearer picture of the vinyl records- sales were up 38 per cent year-to-date. That says it all.

The English language has roots in Ancient Greek, Latin, German, French and several more languages. Because of that, the meaning of certain words we use today have come a long way since their origins, tosometimes mean something else completely. This short list shows you some of the more bizarre origins of modern English words, many of which are quite surprising.

Bellwether” refers to a leader or a trendsetter, generally used for a products or stock that serves as an indicator of the state of the market. In old English dialect, “wether” was the name of a castrated ram, and the lead wether in a herd would usually have a bell hung around its neck, helping the herdsman could locate it.

“Arctic” comes from the Greek word “arktos”, meaning “bear”. It refers to the “Great Bear” (also known as the “Big Dipper” or Ursa Major), a constellation that remain in the same place year-round in the northern sky.

Canopy comes from the Greek word for mosquito – “konops”. The Greek referred to a bed or a couch fitted with mosquito netting as a “Kanopeion”, which eventually became “Canopy”.

The flower “Dandelion” got its name from the French “dent de lion” (the tooth of the lion), referring to the shape of the petals.

When you hear the word “Sturdy”, you think of something robust and solid, but in the 14^th century, it actually meant “unruly” or “unmanageable.” It is believed to originate from the Latin name for thrush – “turdus”. Thrushes had a tendency to eat leftover fermented grapes in wineries, making them drunk and frenzied. To this day, the French use the term soûl comme une grive, meaning “as drunk as a thrush”…

These days, “Pedigree” is used to refer to lineage or heritage, but it originally was a genealogical diagram (A family tree). French scholars in medieval times thought the connecting lines resembled a stork’s leg – “pied de grue”.

When we hear the word “Henchman”, we often associate it with the nameless guards for the main villain in a Bond movie, but the origin of the word has noble roots. “Hench” comes from the old English word “hengest” (horse), and a henchman would be a knight or a servant who would ride along a nobleman on long journeys.
